“Listen.” Jim moistened his lips as they got ready to leave his quarters. “Don’t, uh, don’t tell anyone about what I…you know…how I like it.”

Spock stared at him as if he’d grown two heads. “Why would I discuss either of our personal preferences with anyone?”

When put like that, Jim supposed he was being ridiculous. He had a feeling he was flushed cause his neck and face felt very warm.

“Bridge or you want to get breakfast?”

This was their first time. The newness of it all was about to do him in.

“The bridge.”

“Me too. Let’s go.”

“I am done with this conversation.” Jim snapped as he got in the turbolift. Spock followed closely.

“I am not done.”

Jim almost closed the doors right in Spock’s irritating face. But someone had to be mature here and apparently, this time, it was going to be him.

He crossed his arms in front of his chest as Spock stood stiffly beside him.

“You are being unreasonable,” Spock said through clenched teeth.

Definitely a sign the Vulcan was not pleased.

“You think this is unreasonable?”

So much for maturity.

Jim stepped onto the bridge, ignoring Spock as he did so.

“You know you should talk to him.”

Jim gave Uhura the stink-eye.

She rolled her eyes right back at him. “This is your first shore leave since you two became whatever you are, right?”

He kept his arms crossed in front of his chest and stared out at the purple sea of this planet. He was doing his best to ignore her.

“Are you going to let a little fight stop you from the best shore leave you’ve ever had or are you going to man up and say you’re sorry?”

“You know he…”

“Does it matter? Say you’re sorry.”

Jim opened his eyes slowly. It kind of hurt to do so. He stared up at the ceiling.

Shit, the Medbay.

He didn’t remember how…

“Captain.”

Jim turned his head to see Spock standing beside the bed. Wearing a gold shirt. And a yeoman handed Spock a PADD.

“Need your review, Captain.”

“I will look at it later,” Spock replied. “Leave it for me.”

Jim frowned.

Spock approached. “Jim, I am relieved.”

“Spock…”

Spock put his hands on Jim’s face, leaned down and kissed him thoroughly. “Adun, I am glad you are awake. Doctor? My husband is awake.”

The small boy came out of the bathroom and walked straight into the living room.

“Did you wash your hands?” Jim asked.

“Yes, Daddy.”

Jim smiled slightly. “Let me see.”

The boy held up his hands, palms out.

“Good. Perfect. You hungry, David?”

David nodded, eagerly.

“What do you want to eat?”

David scrunched up his face in thought.

They both turned toward the door when they heard the sound of a hover car door slamming.

“Is that…?”

David turned away from Jim, food forgotten and rushed to the door just as it opened.

Jim smiled. “Welcome home, Spock.”

“You’re really going to go through with this?”

Jim Kirk glanced at his friend, Leonard McCoy.

“What choice do I have, Bones?”

“I don’t know. There has to be another way, Jim. Sacrificing—”

“There isn’t.  It’s the choice I have to make. I signed up for this.”

Bones put his hand on Jim’s arm to stop him. “So did they. When they joined Starfleet. Everyone knows what could happen. What they sign up for too.”

“I’m still responsible.”

“And the rest of us? We’re just supposed to stand here like dummies?”

Jim blew out a breath. “Yes. Bye, Bones.”

March 01, 2021 Flash Fic

So for flashes this month, I’m going to do something a little different. The flashes for March will all be no more than 100 words. So, I will tell a little snippet of a tale in those 100 words or less. Here is today’s! (I used Archer’s quarters, simply because I liked his better than the teeny one in TOS…we never really see Jim’s in the AOS movies, except his closet and sink in Beyond).

Jim woke to gentle rubbing on his back and for a moment he just let the rubbing continue, eyes still closed.

“Jim, you are due on the bridge in thirty minutes.”

He groaned. “Just a few more.”

“You will be late,” came the murmur.

For a few second, Jim mulishly thought, ‘So what. I’m the captain. What will they do?’

He sighed then, opened his eyes, and turned to lie on his back to stare up at the ceiling. His heart rate picked up as he thought of all the ramifications.

“So, now we’re a thing?”

“Yes,” Spock replied.

Flash Fic, February 19, 2021

Eveningstar had suggested:

I would like to suggest a Kelvin universe flash where Jim’s motivation or actions are doubted by everyone except Spock. Oh and Spock and Jim have yet to enter into a relationship, they are just friends…so far. Spock defends Jim and shows Jim his absolute loyalty! Jim puts his faith and fate in Spock’s hands.”

This isn’t quite that but I tried to make it have close enough elements. She also suggested: Another idea is a flash where Jim and Spock are in a damaged shuttle or life pod that is losing power, as they await a possible rescue. The only way for Spock to survive is going into a Vulcan healing trance to save oxygen. Jim obviously can’t do that without help from bonding with Spock.

I am working on this idea but it’s slightly more involved now than I wanted for a flash so I will likely write it as a one-shot to be published on AO3 in the future.

So anyway, here is today’s flash….

Jim waited until just about everyone else had shuffled out of the conference. All the admirals and their assistants. And many of Jim’s own crew members as well as colleagues.

Jim watched them all chattering as they exited. He felt a renewed sense of peace. And a little hot and sweaty honestly. He tugged at the collar of his dress uniform.

Uhura stopped briefly to say something to Spock, but then she moved on too.

In the end, the only two left were himself and Spock. And Spock lingered, Jim supposed, because he’d had a sense that Jim wanted to speak with him. They were often in sync this way.

Jim smiled when Spock approached him. “Glad that’s over.”

“Indeed.”

Jim glanced away for a moment, distracted by passersby. He looked back to Spock. “Listen, I wanted to thank you for what you said in there.” He shook his head. “Even Bones seemed to have doubts. That you believed in me, when practically no one else did, I just…thank you. It meant so much.”

“It was only the truth,” Spock said simply. “I knew that you could not have done what was implied. And now everyone else knows too.”

Jim’s smile broadened. “Thanks to you. You swayed them.”

Spock inclined his head. “And now what will you do with the shore leave we have been granted here?”

He blew out a breath. “I don’t even know. I’ve felt such relief that I honestly made no plans.” Jim laughed. “Right now, I’m starving and would love to just have a nice celebratory dinner.”

Spock hesitated only briefly. “I know a place that will meet your needs if you are amenable to me joining you.”

“Are you kidding? I’d love that.”

“Then, shall we?”

Jim accompanied Spock out of the building and down the street to a resort area with a beach and many restaurants facing the ocean there. He directed Jim to one on the corner, dark and intimate.

They were seated at a table for two right by the window. There was artificial candlelight and everything. It struck Jim as pretty romantic.

He bit his lip.

They’d passed many crowded, noisy restaurants. Some with members of their own crew, yet Spock had brought them there.

Jim looked up from his menu and realized Spock was watching him.

It could be that Spock knew after the events of what had just occurred, Jim wouldn’t really want to be surrounded by large crowds.

Or it could be that he was trying to tell Jim something.

He took a chance.

“Spock, this is a really nice place. Makes me feel…cozy and romantic.”

Spock did not immediately reply so Jim had a moment where he thought he might have gotten it wrong after all.

But Spock wasn’t ever really blatant with anything. He liked subtly a little too much for Jim’s tastes. But he guessed that was just who Spock was.

He continued on.

“I think, maybe, that’s what you intended?” Jim exhaled slowly. “I hope it is.”

When Spock looked down at the space in front of him, Jim tried to hide his disappointment. He had gotten it wrong. Spock had merely thought he wanted a quiet place after all the mess that had been Jim’s life lately.

Jim started thinking of what he could say to take it all back. Some way he could save them both from embarrassment.

“I am relieved.”

Jim’s gaze rose quickly to Spock’s face.

“I feared my interest was not reciprocated.”

Jim reached for Spock’s hand and was happy when Spock placed his hand in Jim’s.

“Same,” he whispered.

“Jim, may I ask you to spend your shore leave with me?”

“My cup runneth over.”

Spock’s eyebrow shot up.

“Yes, Spock. I’ll definitely spend it with you.”

Bones Gets Married

Published in January 2017, I used a little trickery to imply Jim and Spock might not be together only to reveal they were at the end.
