When I woke up this morning, you were gone.

I guess I thought that this time you would stay. But as I opened my eyes there was a dent in the pillow where your head used to lie. I reached over and touched the spot where only last night you had fallen asleep after we loved each other. There was no warmth there. You had left long ago.

I turned to lie on my back, staring at the ceiling and wondering what I had done to send you away this time. Did I say too much? Was I too needy? I tried to hold back but then…I could not. Not really.

Is that why you left?

A noise within the apartment catches my attention, and I turned my head to look at the open door. It is the sound of pans clanging together.

Scrambling out of bed, I pull on my robe, slip my feet into the slippers at the edge of the bed, and leave the bedroom.

The scent of waffles and orange tea waft over me. Your back is to me, but I would know it anywhere. A thousand miles away and I would know those shoulders. That hair.

You turn then and smile.

My heart begins to race in my side.

You are here.

Jim.”

Surprise! Wasn’t really going to do a Mother’s Day post because I have Eveninstar’s birthday fic scheduled that day. But decided, we could all use a little extra Spirk and though it’s a few days early, here it is…

Jim knew didn’t understand at all his desire to visit Spock’s mother with him. At first, he had flat out vocalized his opposition. Although perhaps opposition wasn’t entirely accurate.

“My mother has never expressed an interest or desire in celebrating any such occasion.”

“I’m guessing she wouldn’t be blatant about it, Spock.”

“She accepted life on Vulcan and all that comes with it when she chose to marry my father.”

“Yeah. I know. But I think this will be nice.”

Spock didn’t sigh, but it was an almost thing.

Since they had plans to visit Vulcan and Spock’s parents anyway, Jim had decided this would be a very good time for it.

So, he had carefully packed for it, including wrapped presents for Spock’s mother. He was aware his bondmate thought it all completely illogical and the consideration of it even without merit.

But Jim was having none of it.

Sarek and Amanda greeted them in their home. Sarek, stoically, of course, Amanda les so.

After they were settled into the room where they would be staying for the next couple of weeks, Jim went into his suitcase for the presents he had brought.

Spock looked over his shoulder. “You wasted the effort, Jim.”

He smiled. “We’ll see.”

They made their way back out to the living room area where they were going to sit and have refreshments and “get caught up” as Amanda put it.

Amanda was seated in what she had earlier told Jim was her favorite chair. She smiled when he and Spock came out and joined them.

“Oh. What do you have there, Jim?” she asked, her curiosity showing.

“Well. Actually, Amanda, they’re for you.”

“For me?”

“Since my own mother has passed on, I thought it would be appropriate and nice to honor you for Mother’s Day.”

Her eyes widened slightly. “It is Mother’s Day, isn’t it? How lovely.”

Jim handed the two wrapped packages to her.

Amanda laughed. “I can’t remember the last time I had presents.”

Jim noticed the stiffening in Spock’s shoulders and Sarek’s pursed lips. He ignored both of them and sat by Amanda to watch her open the gifts.

The first was a simple box of chocolates, but she seemed very pleased and glanced at her husband.

“You stay away from my chocolates, husband.”

Sarek humphed which made her laugh.

Then she opened the second and took out a cloisonné bangle bracelet. She gasped. “Oh, Jim, it’s just beautiful.”

He smiled and glanced toward Spock. “It’s from both of us, of course.”

She smiled, sharing a look with him. “Of course. Thank you both so much. This was an absolute wonderful surprise. I feel incredibly spoiled.

Later…

As they prepared for bed.

“Jim?”

“Yes, Spock?”

“You were, perhaps, right and I was, perhaps, wrong.” “It’s okay, Spock, it does happen once in a while.”

It was a bad day. Everything had gone wrong from the moment Jim woke up late and realized he’d missed his first class. One he’d been scheduled to have a test in. He’d messaged his instructor and been told there was no makeup and his missing it was considered a fail.

Jim had been considering dropping the course anyway, so he guessed now he would for sure.

Then his bike had a flat tire and he’d had to take the bus where a girl wearing combat boots kept touching him with her feet.

At lunch he got in a fight with his best friend, Bones.

Then after studying at the Academy’s library for hours, he missed the last bus home. He was going to have to walk several long blocks to his apartment in the rain.

Without a coat.

“Life sucks and then you die,” he muttered sulkily as he passed a tea shop.

“Cadet Kirk.”

Jim stopped in his tracks and turned toward the voice. He should have known by the shiver that went up his spine.

“Professor Spock.”

Spock, a Vulcan and incredibly sexy at that, glanced past him to the rainy street. “Would you care to join me for tea?”

“I’m…not much of a tea sort.”

“They do have a limited selection of other beverages that might be to your liking.” Spock paused. “And then, perhaps, you would like a ride home?”

As Jim stood there looking at Spock, he figured it out. Jim knew interest when he saw it. Even from a Vulcan.

He smiled. “Yeah. I’d love to join you. And I’d love to accept a ride.”

As he followed Spock inside, Jim realized that maybe this day wasn’t all that bad after all.

“What made you ask me for tea?” Jim asked.

“I wanted you to realize life doesn’t have to suck.”

Spock was surprised…shocked even…to find Jim sitting on the ground, in the dirt. His face was streaked with dirt and tear tracks. His legs were bent at the knees, drawn up protectively to his chest. One pant leg was torn at the knee and Spock could see Jim’s knee was bleeding.

“Jim.”

“I scraped my knee.”

“I…see that. Jim…what is it? Why are you just sitting there on the ground?”

“It hurt.”

Spock dropped to his haunches and put his hand on Jim’s face, gently turning that face to look at Spock.

“I am certain that it does. And I am sorry.”

Jim nodded. But he made no move to get up.

“Can you come with me? I will get the doctor to look at your knee. We will get it and you all cleaned up and it won’t hurt anymore.”

“It’s all so much.”

“I know. But if you come with me, all will be well again. I promise.”

Jim stared at his torn knee. “Shouldn’t hurt so much.”

But then he put his hand in Spock’s and Spock stood, drawing Jim to his feet.

Spock took out his communicator. “Two to beam up.”

When they appeared on the transporter, McCoy rushed forward to take hold of Jim, who clearly looked confused.

“What’s wrong with him?” McCoy demanded. “What happened?”

“I do not know.”

“He looks…Jim, can you tell me how old you are?” McCoy asked.

Jim blinked. “Fifteen.”

“Well, that’s just…”

Nyota came forward, smiling at Jim. “Hello, Jim. I’m going to take you to the medbay, okay? Anywhere else hurt besides your knee?”

“No. Um. Well. My head. Where is this? Who are all of you?”

  • okay yes, this one I did on purpose! HA HA

Jim, the human boy, was skittish, and Spock supposed he could not blame him, considering what Spock had learned had happened to him. And to the others.

Not that there were a lot of survivors that had been brought to Vulcan. And most that were, were young like Jim.

This human boy jumped at everything, which cause Spock to feel sorry for him. He had obviously been through a lot.

“Come, Jim. It is only a little farther.”

Jim’s steps faltered. “Where?”

“My home. As I said, you can bathe and eat and become warm again.”

Jim shivered though it was not cold. “Not sure I will ever be warm.”

“You will be safe there,” Spock promised.

“Your house?”

“Yes, Jim.”

“And I get to stay there?” he asked shyly.

“Yes.”

Jim took a step forward, then stopped again. “You sure?”

Spock nodded. “My father has a habit of fostering children. There is already an older human female in our household. My mother is human. Do not worry, you will be welcome.”

But still Jim hesitated so Spock reached out his hand in a gesture probably most Vulcans would not do. But Spock was not most.

Jim blinked and put his hand in Spock’s and Spock led him to the house and inside.
