The small boy came out of the bathroom and walked straight into the living room.

“Did you wash your hands?” Jim asked.

“Yes, Daddy.”

Jim smiled slightly. “Let me see.”

The boy held up his hands, palms out.

“Good. Perfect. You hungry, David?”

David nodded, eagerly.

“What do you want to eat?”

David scrunched up his face in thought.

They both turned toward the door when they heard the sound of a hover car door slamming.

“Is that…?”

David turned away from Jim, food forgotten and rushed to the door just as it opened.

Jim smiled. “Welcome home, Spock.”

Spock had not felt this emotionally compromised in years. He felt almost dizzy and a little bit woozy.

“Spock? Are you okay?”

Nyota had come upon him, put her arm around him as he leaned against the bulkhead.

“I…yes.”

“What is it?” She frowned. “Wait. I thought you were going to tell the captain how you felt tonight.”

“Yes.”

She put her hand to her face. “Oh no. It-it didn’t go well?  I was so sure that he felt the same. Spock—”

Spock shook his head. “No. It went…perfectly. He reciprocates.”

“You’re really going to go through with this?”

Jim Kirk glanced at his friend, Leonard McCoy.

“What choice do I have, Bones?”

“I don’t know. There has to be another way, Jim. Sacrificing—”

“There isn’t.  It’s the choice I have to make. I signed up for this.”

Bones put his hand on Jim’s arm to stop him. “So did they. When they joined Starfleet. Everyone knows what could happen. What they sign up for too.”

“I’m still responsible.”

“And the rest of us? We’re just supposed to stand here like dummies?”

Jim blew out a breath. “Yes. Bye, Bones.”

Spock approached the apartment building, glancing up at the windows of the fourth floor. He entered through the double automatic doors and then rode the lift up.

Perhaps it would be a waste of his time as Spock wasn’t even sure he was home.

He turned right on the floor and stepped up to number 402. He made a fist and knocked.

After a few seconds he heard footsteps approach. Spock straightened.

The door opened and one blue eye peered out.

“Cadet Kirk?”

Kirk opened the door wider and stared out at Spock. “Yeah.”

“I believe I have your PADD.”

Some of these will definitely leave you with more questions than answers!

“What are you doing out here?”

Spock glanced toward the side door of his house where Jim stood, hands on hips. The hot afternoon sun would be beating down on Spock’s head if he were not wearing a sun hat. Currently Spock was on his knees with his hands far down in the dirt of the plant bed in front of him.

“Jim! I was not expecting you until tomorrow.”

“I arrived early. Your dad said you were out here.” Jim wiped his brow. “It’s damn hot.”

“Go inside. I will be behind you in only a moment.”

His first officer lay still as a corpse on the biobed and Jim was very much afraid of the reason for that. He wanted to see if Spock was cold to the touch, but didn’t want to get close enough to do so for fear he’d find out exactly why.

It made no sense.

But when did Jim ever make sense?

A hundred scenarios ran through his head as he watched Bones work on him. All the ways he could have told Spock exactly how he felt. Never had. And maybe now, never could.

“Bones?”

“He’s in a healing trance.”

“So…what do you think?”

He was anxious. Heart pounding. Palms sweaty.

“About what?”

Slowly he let out a breath, long and shaky.

“What-what I told you.”

And now he was regretting everything. It had been a mistake to share this. Why had he done that? No good ever came from sharing his feelings.

“Jim.”

He realized he was looking at the ground, dejected and ashamed.

“Jim.”

He lifted his gaze and stared into dark eyes that were surprisingly warm.

Spock lifted his hand to Jim’s, touching their palms together.

“I think…it is about time.”

So for flashes this month, I’m going to do something a little different. The flashes for March will all be no more than 100 words. So, I will tell a little snippet of a tale in those 100 words or less. Here is today’s! (I used Archer’s quarters, simply because I liked his better than the teeny one in TOS…we never really see Jim’s in the AOS movies, except his closet and sink in Beyond).

Jim woke to gentle rubbing on his back and for a moment he just let the rubbing continue, eyes still closed.

“Jim, you are due on the bridge in thirty minutes.”

He groaned. “Just a few more.”

“You will be late,” came the murmur.

For a few second, Jim mulishly thought, ‘So what. I’m the captain. What will they do?’

He sighed then, opened his eyes, and turned to lie on his back to stare up at the ceiling. His heart rate picked up as he thought of all the ramifications.

“So, now we’re a thing?”

“Yes,” Spock replied.

Flash Fic Monday, March 30, 2020

“What’s on your mind, Jim?”

Leave it to Bones, Jim thought, to know that something was eating him. Truth be told, Jim wasn’t even sure if he could pinpoint it himself, exactly.

He had stopped by sickbay because he and Bones were scheduled to have dinner in the mess together as they did just about every Monday. But really he didn’t feel much like it.

“Zarabeth,” he said, musingly.

“Is there a question there?”

Jim shrugged. “Maybe. Was she beautiful?”

“She was, absolutely.” Bones messed with one of the biobeds. “Give me a minute and I’ll be done.”

“Did she…did they…” Jim shook his head.

Bones glanced his way. “Are you asking me what I think you’re asking?”

Was he? Probably.

“Uh.”

Bones rolled his eyes. “Yeah, she did, and they did.”

“So, um, Spock was really, he liked her, huh?”

“He did. But you gotta understand Jim, that was a different time for Spock. Back when they didn’t control their emotions the way they do now. We were back in ancient times.”

“He wanted to stay with her?”

“Yes, he did. But again, he wasn’t himself, not really, and the truth was, Zarabeth was already gone for our purposes. She would have been alive a long time ago.” Bones smiled slightly. “Gives you a headache if you think about it too much.”

Jim couldn’t deny he had a headache. And he wasn’t really sure why the whole thing bothered him so much. Because Spock could obviously be with whoever he wanted to be with.

“You know, Bones, think we can take a raincheck for tomorrow for dinner?”

Bones looked up from his scan. “Oh?”

Jim waved at his head. “That headache you spoke of.”

Bones nodded. “Sure thing. You okay? Other than the headache. You want something for it?”

“Nah, it’ll pass. See you later, Bones.”

Jim made his way to his quarters, pausing only briefly outside of Spock’s. He shook his head and moved on to his.

Few minutes into changing out of his uniform, he commed Spock.

“Feel like chess, Mr. Spock?’”

There was just the barest hesitation which had Jim wondering if he should have.

“Of course, Captain. The rec room?”

“How about my quarters? I’ve already got my uniform half off and I don’t feel like being too much on display. Say fifteen minutes?”

“Very well. Spock out.”

He got Spock tea and a glass of whiskey for himself and already had the chess board set up when Spock arrived, punctual, of course.

They were seated across from each other, Spock concentrating on the game, while Jim pretended to.

“Mr. Spock, mind if I ask you a personal question?”

Spock glance up at Jim, brow only slightly quirked. “You may ask.”

Jim laughed a little. “All right. Zarabeth.”

He spotted the tightening of Spock’s shoulders immediately.

“What about her?”

“Just…I don’t mean to pry. It’s just Bones said…”

“The doctor usually does not know when to keep things to himself.”

Jim smiled wryly. He couldn’t deny the truth of that.

“What did you wish to ask, Captain?”

He felt a little foolish now, but he’d already broached it.

“Do you…did you love her?”

“Vulcans do not feel love in the same way that Humans speak…”

“Yes,” Jim interrupted. “but, Spock, did you? Love her?”

For a moment, he thought Spock would not answer. And when he did, Jim thought, maybe, he hadn’t wanted Spock to answer.

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry, Spock.” Jim looked down at his chess pieces. He made his move. “Checkmate.”
