Christmas in July, Flash Fic July 29, 2022

This might seem a little close to the last one but they aren’t related, I just got this idea stuck in my head so used it more than once

“What is the meaning of this?” Spock asked as he stepped into the ship’s rec room. All around him numerous crew members decorated the room with garish green and red decorations. Some crew members stood on ladders to hang fake snowflakes from the ceilings. “Mister Sulu, I command you to answer.”

Sulu, who at the moment wore an outlandish red hat with a green pompom on the end, glanced his way. “Captain’s orders, sir.”

Captain’s orders?” Spock supposed he should have guessed. “What is this supposed to be? Besides clearly a violation of regulations concerning the banning of—”

“Didn’t know we had our own Grinch on board,” Giotto mumbled from the other side of Sulu.

“It’s Christmas in July, Commander,” Sulu explained. “The morale’s been low so the captain thought something like this might cheer everyone up.”

Spock narrowed his eyes and surveyed the room for signs of the Human himself. Across the room near the door on the other side of the rec room stood Kirk. He had the opposite hat of Sulu’s, his being green with a red pompom. He was gesturing wildly to Nyota who stood with him, nodding, and typing into her PADD.

At that moment, Kirk’s yeoman appeared and handed him a PADD, which he took with a smile. She said something to him, shaking her head, and then he looked down at the PADD and his smile disappeared.

“I will go and speak to the captain about this senseless frivolity.”

“You do that, sir,” Sulu said, turning his back on Spock.

As soon as Spock made it across the room, he first stopped to speak with Nyota. “Surely you have not agreed to participate in this.”

She shrugged. “It’s fun. Harmless. Just a bit of entertainment considering the last few months we’ve had. I was just going over the menu for the dinner.”

“The menu…this entire event violates regulations concerning the recognition of non-exclusive—”

“Oh shut up, Spock. No one’s being excluded. And by the way, I’m not with you anymore so I don’t have to listen to this.” She flipped her pony tail and stalked off to talk to Engineer Scott.

Spock turned to the captain. “Captain Kirk, this entire affair is against regulations and you—”

Kirk looked up at him, his blue eyes troubled and haunted looking. “Tear it all down then. I don’t care.”

And he walked away and out of the rec room entirely.

Nyota returned to his side. “What did you just do?”

“I-I did nothing. I just attempted to…” Spock closed his mouth. “Please excuse me.”

****

After the captain ignored his attempts at his main door, Spock went through their shared bathroom to reach him. He didn’t want to violate Jim’s privacy this way but it seemed necessary in this instance.

Jim stood in the middle of his quarters, PADD clenched so tightly in his hands his knuckles were colorless. He just stared in front of him, though he did finally glace at Spock upon Spock’s approach.

“What do you want, Spock?”

“What has happened?”

Jim shook his head. “Nothing.”

“I can see that is a lie. Perhaps I allowed my irritation at the recreational festivities to get out of hand, but there is surely something more bothering you.”

“It’s just for the crew, Spock. They need something to make them smile even if it’s just for a few hours. There’s been…it’s a lot to deal with.”

“Acknowledged,” Spock said, finally. “I withdraw my objection. Will you tell me what has happened now?”

Jim pursed his lips. “My grandmother died.” He sighed. “I guess she died a-a few months back, but I just got word.”

“I grieve with thee.”

“There was a time when I thought she was the only one who cared about me.”

“I doubt that was true at the time and I know it is not true now.”

Jim gave him his faint little smile. “I spent time with her as a kid. We had a lot of fun together. And love.”

“Was this your mother’s mother or your father’s?”

“Mom’s. Dad’s parents died before he did. I guess at least they were spared that. My grandmother was the first one who celebrated Christmas in July with me. Even then it was just…complete silliness. But we had a blast together.”

Spock nodded. “I can see that I have quite a lot to learn.” He stepped close to Jim. “Most especially about you.”

“Do you really think you will like learning more?”

Spock kissed him. “I know it.”

And that’s a wrap (Christmas Wrap) on this year’s festivities. Thanks!

Who can resist the guys with a little girl?

“Are you sure you’ll be back for Christmas?”

Jim looked down at the little girl with long golden curls and pointed ears.

“Well. Pretty sure.”

She stuck out her plump bottom lip. “You should promise.”

Jim smiled and crouched down beside her. “I can’t promise, angel. There are far too many variables.”

“You sound like Father”

“How about in the meantime we do something my mom did when I was a kid?”

“What?”

“Christmas in July.”

She looked at him doubtfully. “In July? That’s not logical!”

“Probably not. But see my mom wasn’t going to be around for Christmas, so she decided to give me and my brother Christmas in the summer when she was there. We decorated a tree, and sang songs, and watched movies, and even had presents.”

“But.” Her lip trembled. “If we do Christmas now, doesn’t that mean you for sure won’t be home for real Christmas?”

“No, it doesn’t mean that.”

“How will Santa know to come now?”

Jim smiled. “He won’t. Santa’s real busy right now getting ready for Christmas in December, so for this little mini Christmas your father and I will handle everything. We don’t want to overwhelm Santa.”

She smiled too, her eyes sparkling for the first time that morning. She clapped her hands. “Yay.”

“Want to make gingerbread?”

“With Father too.” She lost her smile just a bit. “You think he’s not busy?”

“Oh, he’s never too busy for that. Let’s go ask him.”

Jim contacted Spock through the bond so that as soon as they reached him, he would know.

“Father, are you—”

Spock’s gaze met Jim’s before going down to their little girl. “Did someone say Christmas?”

“My T’hy’la is here.” Spock made the announcement as he and his friend, Nyota Uhura, stepped through the doors of Starfleet Academy’s Auditorium.

It was currently set up to look like a Winter Wonderland even though it was 35 degrees Celsius outside. Silvery crystal snowflakes hung from the ceiling. In the corner, students could have their photo taken with the Abominable Snowman. Christmas cookies and peppermint mochas were for sale.

“What?”

“I feel him. He is here.”

She glanced at him. “Are you sure, Spock? I’m pretty certain he left for the summer.”

“I am positive.” Spock stopped to glance around the crowded place.

“Even if he is, are you sure you should seek him out? Things did not end well between you last time and—”

“Hello, Spock. Uhura.”

Jim Kirk had suddenly appeared out of seemingly nowhere, though Spock had known he was there. He was dressed from head to toe in some silver and white costume with a crystal crown upon his head.

“What are you supposed to be?” Nyota asked.

“I’m the Snow King for the festival.”

Nyota looked at Spock, then touched the arm of his sleeve. “I’ll, uh, be over there getting some spiked egg nog.”

Jim’s gaze followed her before those eyes blue as the ice that seemed to surround them returned to Spock.

“Well?”

“I…I didn’t expect to see you here.”

“I bet.”

“We had heard you left San Francisco for the summer.”

“We?”

“You have to know she is nothing to me.”

Jim winced. “Ouch.”

“You know what I mean. She is a friend only. You are my everything. And I have…it is unbearable without you.”

Jim smirked. “Unbearable is nice.”

“Jim,” was Spock’s plea.

Jim sighed. “I’m not sure you’ve groveled near enough, but, I’m a sucker for that face. And that body. And those lips. And—”

“I am a sucker for you also.”

Jim laughed. Grabbed Spock’s hand and pulled him along. “Come, you can be my consort.”

I got a suggestion to use the Jim and Spock from First Impressions.

Jim stood in front the mirror trying to decide if he liked the way he looked.

“What do you think?”

“Hmm?”

Jim glanced at Spock via the mirror. His husband was sitting at a terminal in their quarters doing God knew what. Reports probably.

Jim smiled faintly, his memory going back several years now.

“Green or red?”

Spock turned around from preparing tea in the kitchen of their apartment. He blinked several times at Jim.

Well, Jim really couldn’t blame him. It wasn’t every day your boyfriend was dressed like a Christmas elf.

“I beg your pardon?”

Jim smiled. “You can beg me later.”

“Jim—”

“I know, I know. It’s July, right?”

“It is. You also have green knee trousers on with a red…I confess I am at a loss as to what you are wearing on your upper torso is called.”

“Doublet, I think. Like what royalty would wear in ancient Earth days or whatever. That’s what it reminds me of. But anyway, it’s for the elf costume. That’s why I am wondering. Green elf or red elf?”

“You are as inexplicable as ever.”

Jim laughed. “Now that’s a compliment I can get behind.”

“It is not…Jim, why are you wearing that?”

“The hospital is doing Christmas in July for the sick kids. I promised to dress up like an elf.” Jim shrugged. “It’s fun for them.”

“And you too, I would say.” Spock considered. “I would say green.”

“I do look good with green all over and in me.” Jim grinned.

Spock gave him a stern look. “Red. Go as a red elf.”

“How does this stupid uniform look?” Jim asked, in the present. He wrinkled his nose.

“Being promoted to admiral is not stupid.”

“Come on. First impression.”

That got Spock’s attention and he looked up at once.

“You are…as always…breathtaking.”

Jim snorted. “You didn’t always think so.”

Spock got up from behind the desk and went to where Jim stood, pulling him into his arms.

“That is where you are wrong, T’hy’la. From the very beginning I have acknowledged how absolutely stunning you are.”

“You just thought I was a shit.”

“I never thought that. Such a term is not in my vocabulary.”

“Well. You think it looks all right?”

“You look like a highly regarded, decorated officer who has earned his promotion to admiral.”

“Right, sure.” Jim sighed. “Why do I feel like a fake then?”

“You are not. And I am…in awe of the man you are.”

“You’re going to make me cry.” Jim kissed him.

Spock looked up at Jim’s fingers raised above them. “Mistletoe, Admiral?”

“Merry Christmas in July, honey.”

Spock shook his head but drew Jim back into another kiss. “Let us see what you look like out of this uniform.”

“Now you’re talking!”

This is the same Jim and Spock it has been all month

“You just had to go and get yourself injured.”

Jim rolled his eyes at his mother as she hovered by his hospital bed. A moment ago she had tucked the covers around him tight enough to make him think she was trying to make a mummy out of him.

“Right, because I did it on purpose. I thought ‘well, Mom wants me to put lights on the roof and that’s a perfect time to come crashing down.’”

“No, but for Heaven’s Sake, why does it always have to be you?”

Jim opened his mouth to reply when he was interrupted by the arrival of Spock who rushed in looking grim.

“Jim! I received a message that you had been gravely injured.”

Jim took hold of Spock’s hand and shot a glare to his mom. “She exaggerates.”

“He fell off the roof!”

“And only cracked a few ribs and got a concussion.”

“Only.”

Spock clung to his hand. “Why were you on the roof? I went to the store for groceries and the next thing I know I receive this message.”

Mom sighed. “My fault. I asked Jimmy to go up and install these tiny solar lights I bought to go up there. I should have hired someone.”

“I managed to do it fine,” Jim insisted. “It was when I was getting down that I slipped.” He smiled at his worried looking husband. “They repaired the ribs and they just want to keep me overnight for observation. Mom, here, tried to make sure I never moved again.”

Spock glanced over at the tucked in blankets. “Are you certain you will be all right?”

“Yes, of course.”

“As I was saying when you arrived, Spock. Jimmy’s always getting hurt.”

“Mom.”

“He’s broken both arms.”

“Not at the same time.”

“This is his fourth concussion.” She paused. “At least. They should probably check you for brain damage.”

“Brain damage? Mom—”

“Can’t tell you how many times he’s cracked his ribs.”

“You’re freaking Spock out.”

She gave him a look. “And of course there’s the time you actually died.”

“Mom, you aren’t even supposed to know about that, I told you in confidence.”

“I’m not supposed to know my son died?” she exclaimed.

“Ssh. You are not helping calm Spock.”

“Well.” She looked sheepish, but then she smiled. “Maybe this will cheer him up.”

Jim frowned. “What?”

“Sarek’s on his way. When he heard about Jim, well he wasn’t too far, so he got on a shuttle and—”

“That does not keep me calm,” Spock said flatly.

“How did he hear about me?”

She shrugged.

Mom.”

“Lovely. We’ll have a lovely family dinner when you get out of the hospital. It’s best for Sarek and I to get to know each other since we’re all family, you know.”

Jim mouthed sorry to Spock, who leaned down and kissed him.

“All will be well, Ashayam.”

He snorted. “Sure. Wait until we have that kid she mentioned.”

“And this is Jimmy when he was six months. See how cute his tooshie was?”

“Mom.”

“Indeed.”

Jim covered his face with his hands. “I don’t believe this.”

“If you two have a child someday imagine how beautiful they will be?”

Mother.”

His mom smiled in his direction. “It could happen. There are all kinds of methods.”

“We’ve only been bonded for—”

“Almost a year now, right?” Mom asked.

“Yes.” It was Spock who answered and though he wore no particular emotion on his face, Jim felt his amusement from their bond.

“Now, let’s see Jim at two.”

Jim jumped up from his seat and took the PADD with the digital pictures of his life away from her. “Let’s not. You can torture me with them later. We were all going to take you to lunch, remember?”

“Okay.” She smiled. “I’ll stop for now. Let me go get my coat.”

When she left to do so, Jim rolled his eyes and turned to Spock. “Sorry about that. She’s a little bit enthusiastic.”

“Her enthusiasm is sweet. She is pleased you are happy.”

“She is. Yeah. But I didn’t think she’d start in with the naked kid pictures.”

“You were adorable,” Spock assured him. “And she is not wrong.”

Jim laughed. “About my tooshie?”

“That too. That a child we would have would be beautiful.”

Jim’s eyes widened. “You aren’t actually thinking about that, are you?”

“I am.”

“Spock, we’re still on the Enterprise and…”

“After the next mission is over, of course.”

Jim snorted. “Of course.”

Spock patted Jim’s arm. ”There is a lot of time to think about it. In the meantime, I think I win.”

He frowned. “Win what?”

“Your mother is much more agreeable than my father.”

Jim chuckled. “Okay maybe. At least so far she hasn’t give us the ‘what are your future plans in Starfleet, James?’ speech.”

“Exactly. I’d rather look at old pictures of your youth anytime.”

Mom reappeared in her coat. “I’m ready.”

Jim smiled and kissed her cheek. “Come on. Time to spoil you.”

“Oh, I’m so glad you’re here.”

“Me too, Mom. Me too.”

“Maybe meeting your dad isn’t such a great idea.”

Spock gave Jim the side-eye. It was not the first time Jim had suggested he didn’t want to go with Spock to his father’s hotel in San Francisco.

Currently they were on leave between Enterprise missions. Sarek was on Earth and in San Francisco at the same time, performing ambassador duties.

Spock had, he thought wisely, suggested it was the perfect time for Jim and Spock’s father to become better acquainted.

“Technically you have already met him.”

“Are you…you’re talking about the time I emotionally compromised you, aren’t you?”

Spock hesitated. It was not something either of them liked to talk about. Jim felt guilt and Spock shame.

“Yes.”

Jim shook his head. “Great first impression.”

“Jim my father bears no ill will toward you regarding that. He is anxious to become more familiar with you as my mate.”

Which Jim was. They were fully bonded and had been for some time. Spock did not understand Jim’s hesitation.

He had absolutely no doubt Jim loved him and was fully committed.

“What is your hesitation in having dinner with my father at the hotel?”

“Parents of significant others do not like me.”

Spock was unaware Jim had ever had this experience before, so he stopped walking and made the query.

“Which significant other have you—”

“Back in Riverside. Before I enlisted. I was supposed to meet this girl’s mom and dad, right? Well. Turns out I had met one of them before and had a one-night stand with them.” Jim shook his head and winced. “Beyond awkward.”

“Which one?”

“Which…that doesn’t matter, Spock. The point is we were all mortified. That was the end of that.”

“You have not had a prior liaison with my father,” Spock pointed out.

“No, I know. But…”

Spock could not hide the fact he was disappointed. However, he would do anything to avoid hurting Jim in any way. “I will meet my father for dinner without you.”

“Spock—”

“It is fine, Ashaya. I wouldn’t want you to feel forced or uncomfortable.”

“No, I’ll go. I know it’s all part of it and I’d have to anyway. It’s just…I love you and I hate the idea of your dad not liking me.”

“I do not believe that will be the case, Jim, but if it is, that will change nothing between us. You are the most important being in my life and will remain so.”

Jim sighed. “You know what this means, don’t you?”

“Negative.”

Jim laughed then and leaned in to kiss Spock. “You are so meeting my mom.”

Flash Fic, June 03, 2022

Logically, Spock had no reason to rush to the hospital. He had already been informed that his boyfriend, Jim Kirk, was stable and in good condition, and yet he found that he was rushing to be at Jim’s side, nevertheless.

He’d received the somewhat terse message from Jim’s difficult best friend, Leonard McCoy. He’d been forced to finish the course he’d been instructing before he was able to leave.

As soon as Spock stepped through the open door of the hospital room, he felt calmer. More relieved.

Jim sat up in the bed, hair adorably rumpled, a cup of something in his hands. His glance went straight to Spock. His expression brightened immediately and it was all Spock could do not to respond in kind.

“Spock!”

McCoy had been standing beside the bed talking to Jim. He frowned at Spock.

“Just a few minutes. He needs rest.”

“Don’t listen to him,” Jim said as Spock made it to his side. “Barely a scratch.”

“Doctor McCoy advised you had been struck by a hover car.”

Jim rolled his eyes. “It was a hover cart. You know the kind that the delivery guys use.”

“It knocked him to the ground and he hit his head,” McCoy said. “Got a concussion.”

“It really was nothing.” Jim smiled. “But I’m glad you’re here. Tell Bones I can go home.”

“You’re staying overnight for observation.”

“Oh come on. Spock, tell him it’s nonsense.”

“Now see here—”

Spock touched his fingers to Jim’s. “I bow to the doctor’s judgement, Jim.”

McCoy smiled and bounced up and down. “Well. That’s good then. Just a few minutes.”

And McCoy left them alone.

“You look worried,” Jim said softly.

“I am. Or was. I feel better now.”

“It really was just a small thing. I’ve got a hard head.”

“Hmm. Still I am glad it was not more serious.” Spock sat on the edge of the bed when Jim scooted over. “If you would like to delay—”

“No. No way. We’re leaving on Saturday for Vulcan to meet your parents.”

Spock nodded. “Very well. What is that you have?”

“Bones’ nasty broth. I’d kill for some coffee.”

“How about tea?”

“A milkshake?”

“Tea.”

Jim sighed. “Okay. And a cookie.”

Spock’s lips quirked. “And a cookie.” He kissed Jim’s forehead and went to fetch the tea and cookie, letting out the last of his worry and tension as he did so.

One Year Later

“There you are.”

Jim peered up at his dad from his position on the ground next to the cabernet grapes. There was a small patch of dying grass, there was a drought you know, and Jim was lying on his back, staring up at the sky.

“Looking for me?”

“Yup.”

George Kirk lowered himself to the ground next to Jim. He moved easily now. Absolutely no sign of heart trouble. And damn Jim was grateful for that. He really was.

His dad put his hand on Jim’s leg. “How are you doing?”

It was on the tip of his tongue to say, ‘right as rain’, but he choked on the words, and anyway there was nothing right about the lack of rain these days so it didn’t apply.

Instead he shook his head.

“Listen, I don’t know what all went on a year ago,” he dad admitted. “I feel great. I was pretty sure I was going to die.”

“I’m really glad you didn’t.”

“Me too. But it cost you something, didn’t it?” His dad’s tone was gentle.

“No. That didn’t. What cost me is…I just…I didn’t fight for what I wanted, Dad. I just gave up and let someone decide what was best for me.”

“Maybe you can change that.”

Jim laughed without mirth. “No, I can’t. Of all the things that can be changed in the universe, Dad, that’s the one thing I can’t change.”

George was quiet for a while. “I remember some things I am not sure I am supposed to.”

“Yeah?”

“When I was in the hospital, I remember you sitting with me. I was pretty out of it, but you were telling me something.”

Jim nodded.

“About Spock.”

He sighed. “You should probably try to forget what I told you, Dad.”

“Was it true? What you said? Spock’s an alien from another world? Another time?”

“Dad—”

“I’m remembering right, aren’t I? Jim, I remember being in some other hospital bed with strange machinery and a completely different doctor.”

“Doctor McCoy,” Jim said softly.

“Then I’m not crazy.”

“Not unless both of are.” Jim sat up so that he sat side by side with his dad. “I took you to Spock’s world and Spock’s time, which is in the future, and they had advanced medicine and they saved your life.”

George frowned. “And that’s why it seemed like my heart hadn’t been damaged.”

“Yeah. Only…I wanted to stay with Spock. Spock and I…we had the love of a lifetime, I guess, I don’t know. We were soulmates. But he saw how much you all meant to me and told me I should come back here and live my life and basically forget about him and never see him again. His dad was big on not changing the future when changing the past, that kind of crap.”

“So you came back here.”

“Yes.”

“And now you’re miserable.”

Jim shook his head. “Not miserable. Exactly.”

“You quit your job in San Francisco to come stay here with us. That was what Sam wanted, though, not you.”

Jim shrugged. “It’s beautiful here. It’s not a hardship. But…my friend Nyota got married last week to the guy she’d wanted and the crazy thing is she was getting with him when I was seeing Spock and…it makes me a little sad. I’ll-I’ll get over it. Because I have to, Dad. He’s in the future in a place I can’t go.”

“Nothing is truly hopeless, Jim.”

“Yeah right.” Jim snorted. “My alien boyfriend from the future is never coming back. And the problem is, I don’t want to be with anyone else.”

“If I could help you, I would, son. But you should know that we would be all right, you know, if that opportunity ever came up again, your mom and me and Sam with Aurelan and their baby, Peter. We’d be all right.”

Jim smiled and wiped at his eyes. “Thanks, Dad. But it’s just too late.”
