This one is more like the lead up to the family gathering.

“How do I look?” Jim asked his husband after observing himself first in the mirror. He’d chosen not to wear his uniform for this was a personal occasion and they were not on duty. While Spock had dressed in Vulcan robes, he had opted for nice slacks and a long-sleeved button-down shirt he was certain he’d be too warm in.

“Acceptable,” Spock replied, absently.

Jim sighed inwardly. “Some day you’re going to have to tone down those compliments, Spock. They’re starting to give me a big head.”

Spock glanced at him. “Your head is of appropriate size.”

“That’s a relief.” He tamped down his annoyance. “Do you think she’ll like me?”

‘She’ was Sarek’s new Vulcan wife. Many years after the death of Spock’s mom, he had formally bonded with another and Spock and Jim had been invited to their home on New Vulcan for a ‘Meet and Greet’ or a family dinner, Jim supposed. Sarek had offered his lodging for them to stay overnight as well.

“I cannot say.”

“You can’t even guess?”

Spock shrugged slightly. “To speculate would be illogical. I do not know her specific preferences and cannot speak to them.”

“See, on Earth when you meet someone’s parents and they ask if they’ll like you, the usual preferred response is ‘I am sure they will love you as much as I do’ or some variation.”

“That would not be an accurate statement,” Spock told him. “Vulcans do not form opinions based on the perceptions of others.”

Jim’s jaw clenched. “Your dad likes me, though, right?”

“He has never stated whether he does or does not.”

“But you must have an impression.”

Spock denied this too.

“Oh my God. Why…why am I even going to this with you?” Jim exclaimed, no longer bothering to hide his anger and disappointment.

Spock now appeared perplexed. “Because you are my husband and I want you there with me.”

Jim narrowed his eyes. “What for?”

“Because you are important to me and should be included in a gathering with my family.” Spock came forward and took Jim’s hands in his. “Jim, their opinion of you is irrelevant.”

How?”

“Whether they like you or not, it does not change who you are. You remain an outstanding individual with many honorable accomplishments, a great many admirers, a number of people who love you and respect you, me most especially.”

Jim blew out a breath and smiled a little. “You most especially?”

“Of course. I only meant that I cannot predict what her opinion of either of us will be, but that it does not change what is true, who we are to each other, and how we will go forward. That is what I mean by irrelevant. We remain committed mates with a deep, lifelong bond.”

Jim’s smile widened. “When you put it like that…”

Spock smiled slightly. “On the other hand, I cannot imagine how either my father or his new wife could find you lacking, because you are a treasure to me.”

Now he laughed. “Okay, okay. Now you’re making up for it. Come on, Spock. Let’s go meet the parents.”

“She is not my parent.”

“You know what I mean. Your father’s wife.”

“Indeed. And while I will respect that and perhaps even come to appreciate her, she will never replace my mother.”

Jim kissed him. “I know. Not in a million years. Come on. They’re waiting.”

We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing

He chastens and hastens his will to make known:

The wicked oppressing now cease from distressing

Sing praises to his name, he forgets not his own.

Jim Kirk smiled faintly as he stood outside the old church, listening to the hymn they sang. It brought back many memories. Good ones this time.

He glanced overhead at the sky, fluffy white with clouds. A perfect Earth day.

A short time later he was aware of the service breaking up, so he stood aside as church members exited the church and waited.

It had slowed to a trickle when he saw her. She was frail, very thin and slightly hunched over. But he would recognize her anywhere.

He stepped out. “Gran.”

Her eyes widened and then almost immediately filled with tears. “Jim!”

She practically ran into his open arms as he pulled her close, holding her tight against him as she wept.

“They said you were dead,” she managed to wail out.

“Nah.” He tightened his grip.

After a few minutes of crying she finally pulled back but only a little. Her shaky hands touched his cheeks.

“It is you. I’d know that beautiful face anywhere.”

He laughed. “Of course it’s me.”

‘Gran’ was his dad’s mom. As close as he’d ever get to knowing his dad. As a child he’d spent a few summers with her and even a Christmas. She was his favorite person in the whole universe, really.

He linked his arm with hers. “I’m here for a visit.”

“How long?”

“A week.”

And then Spock appeared, walking toward them.

Gran frowned slightly. “Who is this?”

Spock stopped before them and bowed slightly. “Spock of Vulcan, ma’am.”

“Vulcan.” She nodded. “I’m sorry for the loss of your planet, young man.”

“Thank you.”

She looked from Jim to Spock. “And you are?”

“Jim’s first officer.”

“Hmm. I’d say you’re more than that. My home’s right there.”

And it was. She’d always had a home right next to the church she attended. She liked to walk there.

A few minutes later, she was letting them into her house.

“And here you are at Thanksgiving!” Her eyes lit with joy. “You’ll be staying here of course!”

Jim smiled. “We’d love to.”

“Sharing a room, are you?” She looked pointedly at Spock.

“If convenient.”

She waved her hand. “I’m old enough to have seen everything, young man. If you’re sweet on my Jim, that’s good enough for me.”

Spock’s lips twitched. “I am.”

Gran laughed. “Good. Now we can plan our feast.”

“I’ll cook for us, Gran. You should rest.”

She snorted. “Stuff and nonsense. We’ll cook together.”

“Like old times.”

“Yes.” She took his hand and held it. “George would have been so proud of you.”

He leaned in and kissed her cheek. “I’m happy if you are. That’s what matters to me.”

She got teary again. “Of course I am. And absolutely thrilled to know you aren’t dead. I’ve lost too many of my boys.”

“I know. I’m sorry. I should have found a way to let you know.”

She sniffed. “You’re here now. And it’s going to be quite the party!”

He laughed, kissed her and hugged her again.

“It sure is.”

Flash Fic, November 13, 2020

Starting today through the 20th I’m doing a series of sorts (13, 16, 18, 20). I am combing suggestions made by Jay, Evening and Kris to make this short series of November flashes. This is basically a new Spirky Academy Couple created for these four fics.

“Why are we here again?”

Jim laughed at the disgruntled look on Spock’s face. He knew that Spock didn’t really understand any of this, but he appreciated Spock’s efforts to indulge Jim in it.

“To pick apples. It’s an apple orchard.”

Spock looked at the trees before them. “Obviously.”

He smiled. “I’m going to make an apple pie. You know for our gathering.”

The “gathering” as Jim called it was to take place that Saturday at Jim’s and Spock’s apartment in San Francisco.  Their friends were coming. More importantly the parents were coming. Well…Jim’s Mom. And Spock’s Mom and Dad. Jim had been rather surprised Sarek was coming, but Spock had advised he was.

Jim was getting rather carried away, he knew. Had plans of roasted turkey and stuffing for those who ate that way, and several vegetarian dishes. And pies. Two or three kinds.

“Jim, do they not sell apples in the market?”

He laughed as he climbed up on a ladder to pick apples. “They sure do, Spock.”

“Then I fail to comprehend the hassle of coming all the way to this orchard.”

“Apples in the stores are not the same. This pie has to be amazing.”

Spock pursed his lips as he held up the basket for Jim to drop the apples into. “Do you not think you are getting a little carried away with these extravagancies? All of this trouble for just a couple of hours on Saturday?”

“Yep.” Jim grinned.

“You agree that you are getting carried away or that it is too much trouble?”

“To both.” Jim gazed down at Spock indulgently. “I want to make a good impression. Besides our family and friends are worth a little bit of trouble, don’t you think?”

“You are overstressing yourself. Your headaches—”

“Are something I can deal with.” He got off the ladder and took the basket from Spock. “It’s gonna be great.” He leaned in to kiss Spock. “And I’m going to be fine.”

“Very well.”

“We’re done here. We can go back to the city now.”

Spock nodded, seeming pleased.

“There’s a Harvest Festival right next to the Academy. If we hurry, we can make it.”

Spock’s steps faltered and he barely hid his grimace. But to his credit, he simply said, “if you wish.”

Jim laughed. “You look like you might actually mean that. Bravo.”

“Jim—”

“I’m kidding, Spock. Well, there is a Festival, but no, we’re not going.”

“If you really want to go I will make no objection.”

“Nah, I’m good. Let’s go home. We can spend the rest of today in bed.”

Spock’s pace quickened then and Jim grinned.

He knew how to get his Vulcan interested.

Flash Fic, November 04, 2020

Spock knew his silence was bothering Jim as they made the journey to New Vulcan. He knew it by the furtive glances Jim kept throwing his way.

But the truth was Spock was at a loss what to say to Jim, what to say to anyone, really.

He was, of course, grateful for Jim’s support and offer to go to New Vulcan with him. He hadn’t really wanted anyone else to go with him, though Nyota had half-heartedly offered. The end of their romantic relationship, finally for good, had been too recent and too raw for both of them, and though he had appreciated that she had even bothered to make the suggestion, he was just as happy to be able to say that Jim had already pledged to make the trip with Spock.

But Spock’s nerves were raw and he entirely blamed his human side for the difficulties he now experienced.

“Spock.”

He had been waiting for Jim to initiate conversation with him, because Spock was well aware that it was nearly impossible for Jim to remain quiet. It just wasn’t in him.

Generally, Spock was amused by this and even entertained. His relationship, his…feelings…had definitely changed over time. But just then he had trouble finding amusement or entertainment in anything. He wondered if he simply did not answer Jim, if he would drop it.

“Hey.”

Apparently not. Jim had reached over to squeeze Spock’s arm. Spock’s gaze met Jim’s and what he saw did offer him some comfort.

“It’s going to be all right, you know.”

Spock blew out a breath. “I know that I am being altogether…” He almost said ridiculous but substituted “illogical, but it simply never occurred to me that my father would have another wife after the death of my mother.”

“Mm. I can see that. But maybe he got lonely. I don’t know. But there’s also the…uh…you know…the unmentionable.”

Spock gave his captain a look. Pursed his lips. “I only mentioned that aspect to you out of duress and I did ask you to forget it.”

Jim smiled, but it was a gentle smile. He tapped his temple. “Got a good memory, I’m afraid.”

Spock’s stomach fluttered and he knew this was absolutely not the time to discuss this at all, given the circumstances, but he’d been putting it off for so long that it was like an elephant in the room, as humans would say, and they still had hours to go before they would reach the colony.

And anyway, if what Spock wished to happen, what he thought was the case, that everything was completely returned, then Jim would have needed to know all that Spock told him at some point anyway.

“That knowledge may serve you well in the future,” Spock said quietly. “But I ask that you make no direct reference to it when we meet with my father and his new wife.”

“I know that, Spock. I’m not that much of a doofus.”

“Hardly that.”

Spock’s attention drifted elsewhere for a moment, but he was still keenly aware that Jim watched him. Finally, Spock put down the tea that he decided not to pretend he was drinking any longer.

“Jim, I am grateful for your company at this difficult time.”

“That’s a declaration of love right there if ever I heard one.”

Spock blinked at him. “A-a what?”

Jim shook his head. “Are we really going to continue to dance around the fact we’re hot for each other?”

Jim.”

Jim rolled his eyes. “That’s your scandalized tone, but there’s no one else around us right now. Am I mistaken?”

“I don’t see anyone either.”

Jim’s laugh was soft, lilting, very welcome even in these times. “That’s deflection and not at all what I was referencing.”

Spock closed his eyes and leaned toward Jim in their shuttle seat. “You are not mistaken.”

“Good. Listen, we’ll get through this together. I know what it’s like to have a stepparent. Hopefully she’s better than Frank.”

Spock looked down at his clenched hands. “She is three quarters Vulcan only. But considering our circumstances…”

“What’s the other quarter?”

His heart clenched. “Romulan.”

“Spock,” Jim whispered and put his hand over Spock’s.

He shook his head. “She is, of course, not responsible for Nero’s murder of my mother in any way and yet I…”

“I know.”

Spock looked up and met Jim’s gaze, saw the shared sorrow there. “We share that our parents were both murdered by Nero.”

“Yes, and he was a Romulan. But not all Romulans. Things are…tense with them still. I know. And there’s the neutral zone to deal with. But your father, he found something to like in her, yeah?”

Spock nodded. Moved closer to Jim. It was the absolute worse time to begin a relationship of his own with his captain, his best friend, the man he admired over all, and yet…it was also the best time.

“Yes, Jim.”

He turned his hands over to put his palm against Jim’s, thrilled by the warmth and the beginning of…everything.

Jim smiled and despite being Vulcan, despite his nerves, Spock smiled back.

I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus

“Uncle Jim!”

Jim lowered his coffee cup and looked up from his PADD into the wide blue eyes of his four year old nephew, Peter. He smiled. “What’s up?”

“Whatcha doin’?”

“Looking at some messages I received.”

Peter scrunched up his face. “For work?”

Jim sensed a trap. He slowly sipped his coffee. “Er.”

“Daddy said you aren’t supposed to be doing work while you’re here.”

Daddy has a big ugly trap, Jim thought. But he continued to smile. “It’s just a teeny bit.”

Peter sort of shrugged at that. “Santa comes tonight!”

“I know he does.” Jim scooped the boy up onto his lap. “Are you excited?”

“Yes. Are you?”

Jim chuckled. “Well, sure I am.”

“What did you want Santa to bring you?”

“Uh. Well.”

“Mister Spock?”

Jim’s face heated a little. “Uh, no.”

“He likes you, Uncle Jim. I know he does.”

“Well, even if he does, I wouldn’t ask Santa for that. Santa doesn’t bring people,” Jim told his nephew.

“He doesn’t?”

“Nope.” Definitely time for a change of subject. “What did you ask Santa for?”

“A red truck,” Peter said, matter-of-factly.

“Well, I bet he brings you one. Did you make him cookies?”

“Yep. Mister Spock helped me.”

Jim found himself laughing again. He patted Peter’s leg. “This I gotta see.”

Peter jumped off him and Jim stood up following him into the kitchen. They’d made sugar cookies, of course, with all kinds of colorful icing. Some were much more neat and elegant than the others so Jim figured he could guess who made those.

“Those are cool. Okay, go see your Mommy. I think it’s probably time for you to go to bed so Santa can come.”

Peter ran off to see his mommy and with a shake of his head, Jim grabbed a tree shaped cookie and went in search of Spock.

He found the Vulcan sitting outside on the front porch with Sam. He’d been quite surprised when Spock had decided to come with him to visit his brother and his family for the holidays. Sam, Aurelan, and Peter had moved to the old farmhouse in Riverside, taking it over from their mom, who now resided on a colony planet, doing research there.

The Enterprise and her crew were on a short leave on Earth while some repairs and upgrades to the ship were done. Spock had declared there really wasn’t enough time to warrant spending his leave on New Vulcan and since he and Uhura had never really revived their ended relationship after their experience with Krall and Altamid, they weren’t spending their leave together.

That left Spock deciding to join Jim.

It was a rare delight to get to spend time with his family for the season, especially since he and Sam had put aside their differences a while back, and an even greater delight to have Spock there.

And yeah, he guessed it should bother him that even his four-year-old nephew figured out he had a crush on Spock. A crush. Only. Really. But he doubted anything would ever come of it. Spock and Uhura had been done for a while and it wasn’t like Spock declared undying love as a result.

Sam glanced up at Jim from his chair. He smiled. “I guess it’s time for me to go play Santa, huh?”

“Getting close, yeah. Peter’s pretty excited for his red truck.”

Sam grinned. “Santa will deliver, no worries.” He rose from his chair. “All yours. Oh.” He looked back at Spock. “Think about what I said. Goodnight.”

Jim watched him go into the house and then he lowered himself into the chair Sam had vacated. He was pretty sure there was a faint green hue across Spock’s cheeks, but the light on the porch was pretty bad.

Spock was avoiding Jim’s gaze too and Jim didn’t feel like making Spock even more uncomfortable, so he decided not to ask his first officer what Sam had said to him.

“I had one of your cookies,” he said instead.

That caused Spock to look at him and he visibly relaxed. “I had one as well. They do not taste terrible.”

Jim shook his head. “Yeah, good job. You can make cookies for me anytime.” He winked. Then paused. “Are you all right? This has got to be pretty boring for you.”

“Not at all,” Spock replied. “You have a very lively and interesting family.”

Jim snorted. “That’s one way of putting it.”

Spock looked away once more. “Jim.”

“Yeah?”

“I wanted to come along with you on leave for a more personal benefit.”

“Oh?”

Spock blew out a breath. “It is…I find it difficult to discuss this with you.”

Alarm shot through Jim. “Spock, you aren’t going to…you don’t want to leave again, do you?”

Spock looked quickly at him. “You know about that?” He shook his head. “Of course. The doctor. He has a big mouth.”

Jim agreed with that, but he said, “True, but in this case it wasn’t Bones. Uhura told me.”

“I see.”

“Are you? Going to leave?”

Spock looked down at his hands. “That depends mostly on you.”

Jim licked his lips. “On me?”

“Your brother recommends that I be honest with you. I have…developed romantic feelings for you.” Spock let out another heavy breath. “In reality, I have held them for some time, but for some of that I was in a serious relationship with Nyota, and without some prior indication from you of a mutually shared level of feelings, I thought it best to maintain that relationship, but afterward when Nyota and I decided to remain friends only, I…”

Spock.”

He looked up at Jim, his dark eyes wider than normal in his very pale face.

Jim smiled bright. “Stop rambling. I have the same feelings.”

“You…do?”

“Are you kidding?” Jim jumped up from his chair and moved the few feet to where Spock sat. “Move over a bit.”

Spock did, of course, without hesitation. Jim sat on the chair with Spock. Mostly on top, but he noticed that the Vulcan didn’t seem to mind. In fact Spock’s arms came up and around him.

“Why don’t you kiss me and find out for yourself?”

They leaned in for the kiss when the door from the house burst open.

“Uncle Jim! Uncle Jim?”

Jim rolled his eyes, pulled back and gave Peter a smile. “Why aren’t you in bed, buddy?”

“I wanted to see Santa.”

“Oh. I see. And did you?”

“Yes! And Mommy was kissing him!”

Jim laughed. “I bet she was.”

Peter eyed them. He was dressed in the most adorable feety pajamas Jim had ever seen, green and red striped with some Christmas creature on them.

“Santa brought you your present too!” Peter exclaimed.

He laughed. “Yeah, I guess he did.”

“I wanna see if he ate the cookies!” Peter hopped up and down and ran back into the house.

Spock arched a brow. “Your present?”

Jim put his hand on Spock’s jaw. “Uh-huh. I guess I was wrong when I said Santa didn’t bring people for presents. Because he definitely brought me you. About that ki—”

But Spock’s mouth was already covering his, silencing him.

End of the Week Rambles, 12/21/2018

leaves2.jpgProof that our leaves here do change colors, contrary to popular myth. There are trees, of course, that do not change, but there are those that do. This is outside my work. In the background is a pond, or the remnants of one. They drained it a few years back which is a big shame. Ducks and geese use to hang out there and it was fun. Now only smokers hang around the area, and that is not fun.

M’s aunt’s husband died last night. 21 years they’d been together. A little more than a week ago he became very ill and they put him in the hospital for pneumonia. Lately he had been also complaining of lower back pain. While in the hospital they did a scan and discovered he had stage 4 kidney cancer. This was very rapidly moving throughout his body and the tumor and cancerous cells had attached to an artery. His aunt seemed to recall that he had a scan earlier in the year (he was a very heavy man with some other health issues over the years) and there was nothing then, indicating this had been a very aggressive cancer. Basically the doctors spoke of chemotherapy but they couldn’t really operate because of weakness and where it was, but then they changed their tune to weeks to live. He ultimately decided he wanted no treatment and to go home for his last few weeks of life with hospice care. He came home Tuesday and passed away last night. So he didn’t even last weeks. It all went very fast.

We never really got along with him, but he was a nice enough guy and he made her happy, so we are very sad for her. She lives in another state and we hate that she has to pretty much deal with this on her own. He had a son from a previous marriage who lives with them but he has developmental issues and now he is dependent on her. And I suppose in a way, she is on him, too.

Over the next few days, I intend to finish Trashing the Tree to my satisfaction. I don’t anticipate updating anything else until after Christmas, which will be My Heart’s a Virgin, when I do.

I’ll be posting here over the next few days so I won’t give you my holiday wishes until then, but I couldn’t resist the above picture.
