Flash Fic, August 13, 2021

Jim stopped his hover car in front of the farmhouse. For a moment, he just sat there. It wasn’t as though he was afraid to get out or anything. Or even actually afraid of his husband. He wasn’t. That would be categorially stupid. Spock wouldn’t hurt him for anything. Excepting of course that incident long ago before they really even knew each other.

He pursed his lips and opened the door. Because yeah, he was no coward. Even if he was about to be lectured.

Vulcan disapproval was sharper than any other.

Speaking of, his wonderful husband had just opened the front door to peer out at him as he went to the trunk of the hover car to get his purchases.

“What did you get?” Spock asks, as he steps off the steps toward the car. He knows Spock will offer to carry everything.

“Oh, uh. You know this and that.”

“This and…that?”

His shoulders slumping slightly, Jim smiled. “Groceries, of course.”

Spock looks at Jim and then into the trunk. “And?”

He shifts. “They, uh, they had their autumn stuff out already at the store.”

When he was a kid they hardy ever got to decorate anything, and sure he’s overcompensating. He knows.

Spock’s glance moves back to Jim’s face. “You already have a lot of fall decorations, Jim.”

“I know, I agree.” His face is flushed red. He knows it is. And some of it is shame and that doesn’t feel good. “They had this pumpkin garden stake with a crow on it and I, uh, I really liked it. So I got it.”

He lifts it out of the trunk to show it to Spock, who is, of course, unimpressed.

“You have ten pumpkin garden stakes.”

Jim nodded.

“Five scarecrow garden stakes. Several Halloween garden stakes. Even a couple with leaves and turkeys.”

Jim looks away. He thinks about how he’s probably going to have to take this garden stake back. Because Spock isn’t wrong.

Suddenly Spock’s hand, gentle as can be, touches his jaw, and bids him look. “One more garden stake is perfect. I know just the spot we can put it.”

He blinked for a few seconds, and then warmth infuses him. “Yeah?” He is nearly breathless.

“I love you.”

“As much as you love fall?”

Jim laughed. “Yeah. Maybe a little more.”

Flash Fic, August 11, 2021

Spock has been keeping a secret. He is not comfortable with it, but he finds it necessary.

He is in love with his captain.

In reality, he has had this secret for a long time. He first came to the realization that he felt love for his captain as he witnessed his death in the warp core.

Even after this realization, and the relief that Jim’s demise was temporary, Spock chose to continue his relationship with Nyota. He cared for her. It was not the same devotional love he felt toward Kirk, but he knew that was a lost cause, so it seemed there was no harm in continuing to see Nyota.

When it became more troublesome to continue to watch his captain pursue others, Spock sought solace in the idea of doing his duty and resigning from Starfleet for New Vulcan.

He advised Nyota of his plans and their relationship ended.

And then Krall and Altamid happened.

For a while, Spock allowed his relationship with Nyota to resume, given that was what she seemed to wish, but the distance between them grew, they both felt it, and finally she came to him and asked to remain friends only.

Spock had been relieved. He hadn’t wished to lose her, he just didn’t care for her the way she deserved, and they both knew it.

Spock continued to keep his secret, while keeping a watchful eye on his beloved.

He was pretty sure he hid it well, until one day, after Jim was injured yet again in a mission, and he kept a close eye on his recovery, McCoy came to stand beside him as they studied their unconscious captain.

“You should tell him.”

“Doctor?”

McCoy sighed. “Spock, stop hiding behind your Vulcanness and tell him how you feel.”

“I have no idea what you are talking about.”

“Sure. Only the longer you wait, the more chance he’ll give up entirely and find someone else. It’s already been close. If you don’t act, Spock, well…it’s your funeral.”

“My funeral?”

“An expression.”

“A perplexing one.”

“Just…do it. Even if it’s while he’s sleeping. Get it off your chest.” McCoy sighed. Pinched his nose. “Another expression. I gotta go check something.”

And McCoy walked away.

Spock had no idea why he let McCoy talk him into this, but he walked over to Jim’s biobed. Stared down at his unconscious form.

“I am in love with you,” he said, softly, pushing a lock of hair off Kirk’s forehead.

He turned and left.

After Jim was released to go to his quarters for further recovery, he called Spock to see him.

He smiled when Spock arrived.

“Hey. You want to play chess or something?”

Spock agreed. It seemed as though his secret still belonged to him.

They were in the middle of the match, when Jim leaned back.

“When were you going to tell me?”

“Captain?”

“You know what.”

“No, I am afraid I do not.”

Jim sighed heavily. “I wasn’t asleep.”

Spock blinked, stared. “I see.”

“And for the record, I’m in love with you, too.”

A better outcome than Spock had ever expected.

Much later, when they were lying in bed beside each other, having done quite a bit of exploration, Jim turned to him, put his hand on Spock’s face.

“So. When were you going to tell me?”

“When it became relevant.” Spock paused. Smiled slightly. “As it just did.”

Flash Fic, August 06, 2021

“Are you angry with me?” Spock asked his captain, his…boyfriend, he amended in his own mind. Recently acquired, but acquired, nonetheless.

Jim lounged on the couch in his quarters. This new Enterprise had much larger quarters than the old one that had been destroyed on Altamid.

He wore his pajama bottoms and a form fitting t-shirt and had barely acknowledged Spock since he’d come in.

Blue eyes rose to his from the book he was reading. “Should I be?”

Spock thought about it. Decided to answer truthfully, in his opinion, “Negative.”

A slight smirk was his answer. “Then you have your answer.” His gaze went back to his book.

“However, it seems, plain to me, that you are, in fact.”

“What makes you believe that?”

“You are behaving very dismissive.” Spock paused. “If it is out of jealousy, I assure you there is nothing you need feel jealous over.”

“No?”

“The female, Droxine—”

“Was all over you, yes, I saw.”

Spock pursed his lips. He is definitely onto the source of Jim’s annoyance. “I did not encourage her.”

“Nor did you discourage her.”

“I was attempting to learn information from her necessary to our mission.” He paused again. “Similar to how you did with the woman Sylvia.”

Jim frowned. “That was not the same.”

“Indeed. You kissed her. I did not kiss Droxine.”

“Well.”

“Jim, I assure you there is no one that has my affections but you.”

Jim inhaled then and slowly exhaled. “Okay. This is still very…”

“New, yes.”

“I was going to say raw. I don’t like this feeling of jealousy. I felt it enough when you were with—”

“Jim,” Spock interrupted. He went to the couch, sat down, and drew Jim into his arms. “I love you. And no other. You are my t’hy’la.”

Jim smiled against him and snuggled in against Spock’s neck. “You know I love you, too. So much.”

“I know what it is to feel jealous,” Spock admitted. “I have felt that way toward you with your interaction with…anyone.”

“Yeah?”

“Indeed. I try to…repress it.”

Jim kissed him. “There will never be anyone for me but you, Spock. For the rest of my days.”

“Of which there better be many.”

He laughed. “Yes.”

“And for me, it is the same. Always.”

Flash Fic, August 04, 2021

“What did you want to say to me?”

Jim’s expression is open and inviting. Warm even. It is encouraging.

“It is a personal matter,” Spock explains.

“Yeah?” There is no change in Jim’s expression. It remains pleasing. “Go ahead, I’m all ears.”

A curious Human idiom that Spock ignores. Jim uses it frequently.

“I have…come to the conclusion I have developed a close romantic attachment to…a member of the crew.”

He falters here and he is aware of it. Even with the warmth encouragement Jim gives him, Spock finds it difficult to express such emotional thoughts out loud. He’s spent too long suppressing them. Made aware they are a weakness.

“A member of the crew,” Jim says slowly, nodding. “And not Uhura because you guys broke up, right?”

“Yes, Jim. It is not Nyota, though she has encouraged me in my pursuit of…the individual.”

Jim smiles faintly. “I see. Well, if it’s Nurse Chapel, you’ll not only make her day but her lifetime, I’m guessing.”

Spock is aware Jim is joking, trying to lighten things. But he is also aware that the ship believes Nurse Chapel has a crush on Spock. Perhaps she does, but it is not something Spock considers serious nor a matter for humorous speculation.

“It is not the nurse,” Spock corrects. “My sexual interests are in the pursuit of male companions,” he attempts to explain.

Jim’s expression clouds then. Like he is unsure what Spock means, but then it clears, and he nods again. “But you were with Uhura.”

“Yes, but it was during our relationship it became clear to me that my preference was for males.”

“Okay.”

Spock exhales. He has been stalling and for no good reason.

“Jim, my romantic affection is directed toward you.”

Jim’s warmth openness abruptly changes. His expression suddenly goes blank, and his blue eyes no longer hold the sun in them. They are not exactly icy, but they chill Spock, nonetheless.

“Spock.” Jim purses his lips.  “I…you’re my friend. I adore you. I don’t know what I’d do without you, you know that. I’ve told you dozens of times. But I…I don’t feel that way toward you. I’m sorry.”

And just like that, Spock’s heart, beating in his side, shrivels and dies. Jim is shaking his head and talking, saying nothing has to change between them due to Spock’s ill-advised declaration, but it is a lie and they both know it. Everything has changed.

And Spock begins to reconsider his decision not to go to New Vulcan.

Spock wakes with a pained gasp. His quarters are dark and the temperature not ideal.

“Computer, lights on and temperature raised twenty degrees,” he said, his own voice hoarse, rough.

Very slowly, Spock returns his breathing to normal. He has not made the mistake of revealing his love for Jim. It was merely a dream.

Impulsively, Spock gets up, dresses in his uniform, and makes his way to Nyota’s quarters.

It takes a moment, but she lets him in, having pulled a robe around her regulation red pajamas.

“Spock? What is it?”

“I apologize for disturbing your rest.”

She puts her hand on his chest and smiles. “No, it’s all right. You want some tea? What’s happened?”

Nyota brings him tea without him responding to her query and they sit on her sofa. Part of him feels foolish, though he knows she wouldn’t judge him.

“I told the captain…Jim how I felt, and he doesn’t reciprocate.”

She frowns. “What? Are you sure? I thought he—”

Spock shakes his head.

“When? When did you tell him? And tell me exactly what he said.”

“It was a dream,” Spock admits.

“Oh Spock, then you’re fine. That’s just because you were anxious, so your mind made up a nightmare. Jim is not going to reject you.”

“What if it wasn’t?”

“I don’t understand,” she says.

“What if it is a …premonition.”

She gave him a look. “Have you ever been clairvoyant before?”

“No.”

“Well then…”

“But Vulcans are telepathic. It is possible that I am acquiring some sort of telepathic signal from Jim that—”

“Oh, Spock. Please.  You don’t believe that.”

Spock shakes his head. “I cannot take the chance. If what I dreamed came true, I would be forced to leave the Enterprise.”

“Forced to leave? Jim would never do that.”

“Not knowingly, no. I do not mean that he would request I depart. But the situation would become so untenable, I would have no choice, personally, not to leave service under the captain.”

“Spock—”

“Please, Nyota. I cannot risk it. The only solution is to remain quiet regarding my feelings for Jim. Should Jim come to me with an expression of affection toward me, then I will admit to my own. But to be parted from him, is worse than remaining silent.”

A short time later, Spock returned to his own quarters, determined not to listen to any of Nyota’s arguments.

In the morning, they would begin shore leave on the planet, Mesador, which bore an uncomfortable resemblance to Risa as far as Spock was concerned. Though Jim would no doubt take part, Spock would stay behind so as to not subject himself to the sight of Jim having too much fun there.

When morning came, Spock finds himself in the turbolift with his captain.

Jim smiles warmly at him. It is that open inviting smile, that expression that has given Spock hope, however falsely.

“What did you want to talk to me about last night?” Jim asks. “Sorry I wasn’t available. Mom and I have a longstanding conference Tuesdays when we’re anywhere within range. You said it was personal?”

“I…was able to handle the matter on my own, Captain.”

“Oh.” Jim nods and this time his expression changes infinitesimally. Just a small change that no one would likely notice save for Spock because there is nothing he misses in Jim. “Okay.”

The word is spoken softly and though it’s not exactly sad, there’s something there that is off.

“Is something the matter, Captain?”

The full watt smile is back. The one that Jim projects to say he hasn’t a care in the world. Spock has seen it used on many people over the years. When he first notices it, back when Spock felt jealousy over it being aimed at Carol Marcus, he hadn’t recognized it as being a defense for Jim. He knows it now.

“No, no.” Jim shrugs. “Just…I liked the idea of you confiding something personal in me. Made me feel good about us being friends. It’s nothing, Spock.”

Fear is illogical, Spock thinks. He vaguely recalls McCoy telling him that fear of death was what kept humans alive. But this is not a matter of life and death. Or perhaps it is.

“Are you going down for shore leave, Captain?’

“No, I’m staying onboard. I figured I’d man the ship and let everyone else have fun for a change.”

Spock frowns. “You do not intend to frolic on Mesador?”

He uses the term Jim used for their last shore leave.

Jim smiles, a little more genuinely. “I’m going to take your advice, Mister Spock, and rest. I’ve got lots of reading to catch up on.”

“Reading,” he repeats. The doors open onto the deck and Spock follows Jim out onto the deck with their quarters, though originally Spock was headed to the bridge. “Books? Not reports, correct?”

“Reports?”

“If you are behind, you can send them to me. I am not going on shore leave. I am more than qualified to complete them in your stead.”

“I know, but I’m not asking you to, and anyway, no, it’s not reports. Some actual books I picked up at a bookstore in San Francisco last time we were there. Very relaxing, Spock.”

Jim stops in front of his quarters. And Spock takes a chance, even though he feels as though he may shake apart. The idea of ruining everything he does have with Jim is—

“Captain, there is something I would like to share with you, after all.”

“Yeah? I’m all ears. Come on in.”

Spock follows Jim into his quarters, his head buzzing from hearing Jim say the words he did in Spock’s dream.

It might be an omen.

He does not beat around the bush, as the human idiom goes. Spock seems to be full of them these days.

“Jim, I wished to advise you that I have developed feelings of a romantic nature for…you.”

And just like in Spock’s dream, Jim’s expression shudders.

His mouth dry, Spock continues, “I am in love with you.”

Jim slowly blows out a breath. It is the longest exhalation in history, Spock is quite certain.

“Spock.” The word is a whisper along Spock’s brain. It is not followed by the terrible words…you’re my friend.

Jim moves closer to him, puts his hands on Spock’s forearms. He feels the heat where Jim touches him. It scorches his katra.

“Are you sure?”

Spock swallows. “Quite.”

The warm smile returns and even more slowly the sun that warms up the blue of Jim’s eyes. There are tiny crinkles by Jim’s eyes when he smiles that Spock finds obsessively appealing.

He meets Jim’s mouth as Jim rises up to kiss him. It is like being reborn in some way.

“I love you too.”

Flash Fic, August 02, 2021

And so begins another month of flashes. I have no particular theme for this month, whatever strikes my fancy and fills my imagination. Here’s the first one.

Jim finds him on the observation deck. Truthfully, he had been unwilling to wander the ship looking, so he had asked the computer for Spock’s location.

But now that he is faced with Spock, back to him, Jim isn’t sure whether he should be here or not. Still, he is pretty sure that Spock knows he is here.

“Hey,” he says. Because he’s so uncertain how to begin. He finds he is hugging himself, which he knows is defensive body language, yet he can’t help it. He is defensive.

Spock turns to look at him, and though Jim can see there is a troubled look in his chocolate eyes, that trouble does not seem to lie at his footsteps, so to speak.

Jim asks, anyway, “Did I do something wrong?”

Because they’d just spent hours sexually exploring each other. And from Jim’s point of view, it had been incredible, better than anything he’d ever experienced, and he’d thought it was pretty incredible from Spock’s point of view also, but he’d just woke up alone, and somehow that had felt…big.

“No, Jim. I apologize for making you have any doubts whatsoever about us. Tonight was…more than I could ever hope for.” Spock unexpectedly holds his out his hand towards Jim, who takes it and is drawn to Spock’s side. “I was thinking of my mother.”

“Your mother?”

Spock nods. “I…often do…still. I suppose that is a weakness.”

“No way, Spock. What would make you ever think that?”

He shakes his head. “A Vulcan—”

“Never mind all that, Spock. She was your mom. What are you thinking about?”

“She would have been very happy to know you and to know that I have found my…T’hy’la.”

“T’hy’la?” Jim whispers.

“No Vulcan in a hundred years has been so fortunate. And yet, I have found mine. Brother, friend, lover. The closest standard term would be soulmate and yet for a Vulcan, it is so much more.”

Jim smiles, hesitantly, because it is hard to believe he could be this. “And I am that to you?”

Spock takes both of Jim’s hands in his. “Yes and more. Even those simple three standard words I love you do not seem to convey the depth of my great affection for you, my Jim.”

Jim’s eyes well up with tears. “I feel the same. And I’m sorry your mom isn’t here. I know you miss her, and I wish I could have met her.”

“You two would have been conspiring against me and my father, I have no doubt.
Spock shakes his head. “I often think about her. What she would think or say about whatever is going on in my life. She never judged me about anything and always said she would be proud of me, and yet, there are times I wonder if that would be true.”

“I’m sure of it, babe. There is no one better than you that I know and there’s no way your mom wouldn’t think the same.”

“She was always on my side no matter what. No one else has ever been that way for me.” Spock gazed into Jim’s eyes. “Until you.”

“And I always will be on your side, no matter what.” Jim kisses him. “Come back to bed with me?”

“Yes, T’hy’la. I will.”

And for the final one, these guys are from Would You Rather?

“Oh my God.”

Spock glanced at his captain. His boyfriend, Spock amended in his mind. Of six months now.

“Could it be any hotter? It’s like two days before Christmas for heaven’s sake.”

Spock acknowledged Jim looked exceedingly hot and uncomfortable. He was sweating profusely, his uniform marked by large wet patches. His face was alarmingly red too.

“I do not believe Dioxie 3 recognizes Christmas.”

Jim ignored him, predictably. “Man if I was back in Riverside it might be snowing.” He leaned against a large tree and panted. Wiped his brow. “How are you not dying?”

“A Vulcan’s temperature—”

Jim suddenly doubled over clenching his stomach. “Damn. Ugh.”

“Jim!” Spock rushed to him. “You do not look good.”

“I feel kind of faint.”

Spock took out his communicator. “Spock to Enterprise. Two to beam up immediately.”

****

Spock tensed only slightly when Leonard’s hand clasped his shoulder. He had definitely gotten used to the Human need for physical contact. Between his past with Nyota and his present and future with Jim, he’d had to.

“It’s all right, Spock. Just a nasty bout of heat exhaustion. We weren’t prepared enough for those burning temperatures there. Or I wasn’t. If I had been, I could have given Jim a shot to help with it. He just needs rest and hydration. Extra care. I’m going to keep him here in the medbay for another night, maybe two.”

Spock nodded, his gaze fixed on Jim who was lying on his back, staring at the ceiling.

“And you are sure?”

“I’m sure. Could have been much worse if he’d gone into heat stroke. We got to him in time.” Leonard smiled. “I’ll be in to see him in a bit with some food. You can have a few minutes with him.”

Spock offered Leonard his gratitude, and then went over to Jim’s side.

“Jim?”

Jim’s gaze shifted to Spock and he gave Spock a ghost of his usual smile. “Hey.”

“How do you feel?”

“Okay. A bit weak I guess, but mostly a lot better.”

“The doctor will be bringing you food soon.”

“Good.”

“Are you sad?” Spock asked him, after observing Jim for a moment longer.

“Yeah. I mean, it’s Christmas and I’m in the hospital. It kind of reminds me a bit of the past.”

“How so?”

Jim shrugged. “When…when I got off Tarsus IV, it was this time of year, you know, and for a long time they kept me in the hospital, to get my strength back. This feels like that. Just a little.”

Spock held Jim’s hand. “I understand, but I assure you it is not, and you will be out soon.”

Jim’s smile was more genuine this time. “I know.”

****

A bit later, and with permission from Leonard and the rest of the medical staff, as well as some necessary crew members, and the admiralty, Spock returned to Jim’s side.

He was sitting up now and looking much better. He’d recently had eggnog ice cream, he’d told Spock.

“Jim, I have something to ask you.”

“Ask me?”

Spock nodded, and took both of Jim’s hands in his. “Would you rather get married right now in the medbay with all of our friends as witnesses or wait until some other time in the future?”

Jim stared, wide-eyed. “Spock?”

Behind him Leonard snorted. He had just come in, followed by Nyota, Sulu, Chekov, Scott, and Keenser.

“Well, kid?” Leonard demanded.

“Uh.” Jim sucked in a breath. “Now?”

“Excellent answer, Cap’n.” Scott said, then he held up a device and pushed the button.

Snow, artificial, of course, began to fall lightly on Jim and Spock.

Jim looked up in wonder. “How…?”

“Mr. Scott’s ingenuity,” Spock explained.

He watched as Jim looked around and saw that the crew, Nyota mostly, had brought with them a decorated Christmas tree. Nyota set it upon a nearby table.

“A Christmas wedding?”

Spock nodded. “If it pleases you.”

Jim grinned. “It does. But who’s going to marry us?”

“Keenser. He is, apparently, authorized in ten galaxies.”

Jim laughed. “Always learning something new about him, I guess.”

Spock leaned down to kiss Jim, eyes shining. “Are you ready then?”

“A thousand times yes.”

And their friends drew near, Keenser stepping closer, and Admiral Barrett onscreen to witness it too. Snow falling and whimsy everywhere.

“One more thing, Jim.”

“Yes?”

“Would you rather bond with me now or later in our quarters?”

Our quarters?”

Spock nodded. “They are being set up right now.”

Jim beckoned Spock closer and then as Spock leaned down, Jim whispered, “Later. When you claim me.”

Spock shivered and straightened. “Let us begin.”

And that, my friends, is a wrap on 2021’s Christmas in July….see you in December for more holiday cheer

Christmas in July, Post 14

“How are you feeling, Jim?”

Jim grimaced. “Like anyone would when they were stuck in the hospital on Christmas Eve.”

Bones patted his arm. “I know and I’m sorry. I just think it’s better to keep you here for a few days. Observe you.”

“What exactly is wrong with me? I feel fine now.”

Jim had been fine. Going about his business in San Francisco, headed into HQ when he just…collapsed.

“Looks like…I don’t know. All your vitals are normal now, Jim. But you had some kind of reaction, almost a rejection of Khan’s blood.”

“After all this time? Bones, it’s been years.”

“I know. Doesn’t make any sense. And while you are fine, I don’t trust those findings until I thoroughly check out every last scenario or evidence for what happened. And it sucks I know, but there it is.”

Bones thrust a large cup at him. “To make things a little better, I brought you a pumpkin shake.”

Jim took it and even managed a tiny smile. “Thanks. How about visitors?”

“Nope.”

“Bones—”

“Your immunity might be compromised, Jim. I don’t want to take any chances.” Bones hesitated. “I may have a surprise for you later.”

“A surprise? Bones, I don’t like surprises.”

“You’ll like this one.”

“Then tell me. Make it my Christmas present.”

“It is your Christmas present, but in case I can’t make it happen, just…wait.”

Jim sighed and fidgeted with his blanket before taking a big sip with his straw of the pumpkin shake. “At least this is good. Bring me some Christmas music or something.”

Bones smirked. “Aye, aye, Captain.”

Luckily for Jim, perhaps for Bones, now that Jim thought about it, not only did Bones supply him with Christmas songs, but also a little tree with decorations and a small handheld screen to watch holiday movies on.

Sure, it still sucked being in the hospital with no real answers as to why he collapsed in the first place, but it could have been much worse, and Jim knew it.

He was fully engrossed in one of his favorite renditions of Ebenezer Scrooge getting his lesson from three spirits when suddenly he felt awareness begin at the top of his head and flow down his body.

Eyes wide, he set aside the little screen after hitting pause.

Then the door to his room opened and in stepped…

“Spock!”

“T’hy’la,” Spock greeted him, hurrying over to pull him close. “You gave me quite the scare.”

“Sorry. How-are you my Christmas present from Bones?”

Spock pulled away only slightly. “I am.”

He sat on the edge of the bed and took both of Jim’s hands in his.

“But you said you couldn’t make it back to Earth for the holidays. You were too busy.”

“That was before your somewhat theatrical collapse.”

“It wasn’t intentional, honey, I swear.”

“I know and I am relieved to see you are as well as you are. I had to rearrange many things on New Vulcan, but here I am. And I am not leaving you again for a very long time.”

“If that’s ever, you’ve got yourself a deal.” Jim smiled. He loved the feel of Spock’s hands in his.

“I am concerned for your welfare.”

“I know but Bones is doing tests. We’ll figure it out. I feel good. Great even. Better than ever now that you’re here. Join me on the bed and finish watching my movie with me.”

Spock gave him an indulgent look, but he did as Jim requested and drew Jim close into his arms as Jim restarted A Christmas Carol.

He was right to the part where the Ghost of Christmas said to Scrooge,

“There is never enough time to do or say all the things that we would wish. The thing is to try to do as much as you can in the time you have.”

Jim turned his head to gaze at Spock, Spock felt his gaze and looked at Jim. Jim smiled and kissed him. Maybe being in the hospital was tolerable.

Christmas in July, Post 13

I suspected I must look particularly hapless and forlorn when my butler, Hartford, offered to stay behind for the holiday season I generally gave the staff time off for. He’d never made the offer before, being eager like all the rest, to spend time with their families rather than look after me.

With a forced smile, I shook my head.

“No, Hartford. You are free to depart with all the others and I will see you the day after the new year.”

Hartford hesitated. “I did set up the kitchen with plenty of provisions as usual.”

“I am sure you did. You are a godsend, as usual. Happy Christmas to you and your family.”

Hartford began to turn away then. But then he looked back at me. “Do you expect your usual guest to visit? Lord Christopher?”

“I do not. But all is well, nevertheless. See you on January second.”

My reluctant butler became less reluctant then and hurried out before, I suspected, I changed my mind. He was wise.

I sighed with a tiny bit of melodramatic melancholy when the house was empty save for myself. I considered heading back to London. While there was no season of social engagements at the moment, I knew there were still my usual haunts that would be open to me. And in many ways, London could be quite festive during the Christmas season.

I decided I’d have a nice meal there at my country estate, perhaps drink far too much sherry after, and give the idea some thought by morning. If I decided it still had merit, I would ride to London.

Lord Christopher, as Hartford had alluded to, would be spending the holidays with his new wife and infant daughter, I imagined. An arranged marriage, of course, as most were. I’d escaped such a thing for along time myself and intended to continue doing so. I didn’t care which of my living relatives would inherit everything upon my death. I’d be past caring, wouldn’t I? But I had no parents left to nudge me into marriage to a female I could barely stomach. In that, I guessed, I was fortunate.

I knew Chris would be expected to tow the line in that direction, but it still hurt, and that was unfair. I had not seen him since the wedding, but I had heard, of course, of the birth of their daughter.

Isabella.

Since his wedding, I had hardly been celibate. I had physical needs, after all. I’d even engaged quite briefly with sex with Shaw, though I’d once vowed I would not. Shaw was blond and handsome and in some ways reminded me of Chris, though he was far more polished and sophisticated than Chris had ever been. Which is why I preferred Chris. Well, many reasons actually.

But whatever satisfaction I got from others it was hollow compared to my times with Chris.

I was on my second sherry, seriously convinced I would leave for London in the morning, when there was a rather loud knocking upon my front door.

For a moment, I waited for Hartford to answer it, then remembered it was me alone. I thought about ignoring it, but then someone had come all the way out to the middle of nowhere to see me.

I struggled out of my chair, placed my glass of sherry aside, and made my way out of the parlor and to the door.

It occurred to me as I unbolted it, that it was likely someone in need during this particular season of which, I knew, there were many. I would give them whatever I could.

But instead of a beggar or poor villager as I expected, Lord Christopher stood upon my doorstep looking almost absurdly fetching with a hat upon his blond head and a scarf wrapped around his neck. An overcoat dotted with the first hint of falling rain.

“Chris?”

He smiled. “None other. And it has stared to rain, so…would it be permissible for me to come inside?”

Permissible?

I yanked him inside so fast I was amazed I hadn’t broken anything.

Looking past him for a moment to ensure he was alone, I drew him tightly into my arms, thrilled to hear his hearty laugh.

“I can’t believe you’re here. I didn’t think you were coming.”

“Silly man. Where else would I be?” He drew back just enough to cup my face with his gloved hands and thoroughly kiss me.

“With your wife and daughter, I imagine,” I said, after coming up for air. I wanted to kiss him again. I did as I closed and re-bolted the door.

Chris shook his head as we walked into the parlor arm in arm. “An arranged marriage, Zachary. We have an understanding. She is happy to live her own life behind closed doors.”

“She has a lover?”

“Two or three as far as I know. It matters not at all to me. We are friendly but that is as far as it goes for each of us. We do our duty and nothing more.”

“And your infant daughter?”

“She is with her nursemaid. She will hardly comment on my absence at this age.” He drew me down to sit on the settee and then he sat upon me instead of the sofa and I was gladdened.

“How long can you stay?” I asked after kissing him again.

“How long would you like?”

Forever.

That was a fool’s dream, so I did not and could not say it.

“As long as you are able.”

Chris nodded. “About a week then.”

It was more than I expected and everything I hoped for.

After some more lengthy kissing, I murmured, “I had planned to leave for London in the morning.”

“Did you?”

“I think I’ll delay that about a week.”

He grinned. “A very wise plan.”

“Are you hungry, my love?”

“Yes, but at the moment, it’s for you. Take me to bed. It’s been far too long.”

It certainly had.

Hours later, we held onto each other in a warm bed, a fire in the hearth, and spoke of our plans for our time together. I was happy he had come. Some day, perhaps, he would not. And I would deal with that.

When he was in my kitchen eating food I had leftover, he gave me a look. “Shaw, Zachary?”

I knew I blushed. “How did you know?’

“I know.”

“It won’t be repeated. I was really quite lonely.”

Chris smiled, his sweetest smile. “I understand what you do when we are not together and accept it. We each have our duties we must tend to, but I hope you know that no matter where we are, when not together, I love you with all my heart and soul.”

“And there is no one in my heart but you, Christopher.”

“Happy Christmas,” he said, kissing me once more.

And indeed, the happiest of Christmases was had.

Christmas in July, Post 12

“Spock, what are you doing here?”

Spock was surprised by the sharp tone he detected in Nyota’s question. He had just sat down at a table at an outdoor café where Nyota sat with a couple of friends.

“You invited me,” he explained, thinking it was obvious.

She stared at him. “What about…Jim?”

Jim, of course, referred to Spock’s recently acquired boyfriend.  He had mentioned being invited to the café and had even asked Jim if he’d like to come.

“He declined to come. Prior to your invitation, Jim had planned to stay home today to watch holiday movies while eating eggnog ice cream and gingerbread men, and consuming peppermint mochas. When I told him about this invitation he wanted to continue his original plan.”

Now Nyota was bugging her eyes out at him.

“Oh no.” She looked at her friends and smiled. “Would you two, um, go get me a refill on my drink?”

Spock was puzzled as it appeared her drink was full but her friends hurried away so perhaps they knew better than Spock did.

“Spock, you-you don’t…cancel plans your boyfriend was looking forward to in order to go out with your friends.”

“But Jim said he did not mind.”

She laughed. “Honey, he minds.  He was planning on this. With you, right?”

“Well. He did ask me, yes, but he said—”

“Whatever he said, pay that no mind. You have a lot to learn about humans, Spock. Now you go right back to Jim and sit there watching holiday movies with him. Or you’ll definitely be sorry later.”

Spock did begin to feel a bit uneasy. Jim had smiled when he said to go ahead but it was a rather strange smile. He rose.

“And pick him up a present along the way!” Nyota called after him.

****

When Spock knocked on Jim’s door, there was no immediate answer and he became more worried. But then slowly the door opened and one blue eye peered out at him.

“Spock?”

“I have come to watch merriment with you.”

Jim opened the door fully and stared at Spock. He wore his pajamas, Spock noted, and there was a touch of red around his eyes Spock did not like.

“You said—”

“Forget what I said. I was a fool.” Spock held up the giant Santa sugar cookie he had bought at the bakery on the way there. It was covered in glittery red sanding sugar. “I have bought you a cookie. May I come in?”

Jim smiled, grabbed Spock’s hand, and pulled him inside. “Of course you can. I’m just getting started. Come on.” He kissed Spock quite thoroughly. His cheeks were faintly pink. “I’m so glad you’re here.”

“As am I, Jim.” He was led to the sofa and as they started the first movie, Spock did not let go of Jim’s hand.
