Sneak Peak – Upcoming Story

Sneak peak of something I am working on.

Title: You’re in My Veins

Spock meets Jim Kirk one night at a local bar while he waits for a friend.  To Spock’s surprise, they end up becoming friends. As their friendship deepens, Spock becomes romantically enamored with Jim, but Jim is firmly in the friendship zone. He’s a flirtatious commitment-phobe who avoids intimacy (he refuses to even kiss his sexual partners) . In short the absolute worse person for a Vulcan to fall in love with.

“Come on, kiss me,” the female Human whined. For the fifth time by Spock’s calculations. The couple next to him were becoming rather…tiresome.

“I don’t kiss,” the cadet male responded. Again.

“But why?”

Cadet James Kirk, as Spock was familiar with him, shrugged. “It’s just not my thing. I’m not into it.”

“But you’re just fine having sex with me.” She pouted. “Is that it?”

Kirk smiled a little “Yeah, that’s it.”

She narrowed her eyes. “You are such a jerk!” She slammed her empty glass on the bar and stalked off.

Kirk’s smile widened as he seemed to notice Spock for the first time. “Hey. Professor Spock right?”

“Indeed.”

“Sorry about that. Didn’t mean to make you a part of our conversation.”

“Your girlfriend did seem to be displeased with you.”

“Yeah, only she’s not. My girlfriend that is.”

Spock inclined his head. “I gathered that by the way she departed.”

Kirk laughed. “No. I mean, well, yeah, I think she was dismissing me for sure. I just meant she was never really my girlfriend.” He paused. “And why am I even bothering you with this? It’s not like you care. Hey, I don’t think I’ve ever seen you at a bar before.”

Spock nodded. “You are correct, Cadet. I was supposed to be meeting someone here. I surmise she is not going to appear.”

“That sucks. And it’s Jim. Jim Kirk. I mean we’re not even on campus right now.” Kirk leaned a little toward Spock. “Were you supposed to meet Uhura?”

“How did you know that?”

Kirk shrugged. “I’ve seen you with her.”

“As a matter of fact it I was meeting her. But it is clear something came up. We were supposed to go have tea.”

“Why didn’t you just meet her there?”

“It is a new shop that she is unfamiliar with and this establishment is close to her part time job.” Spock entered a message into his tablet and sent it to her. They would have to reschedule. He glanced at Kirk. “Would you be interested in accompanying me for tea?”

“Me?”

“It is only a thought,” Spock replied. “Perhaps you do not even care for tea.”

“Actually I really haven’t had much. Sure. Why not? Obviously my night isn’t going to end the way I hoped it would.” He slid off the barstool and followed Spock from the bar.

Kirk shoved his hands into the pockets of his battered leather bomber jacket. Spock could not deny it looked good on him. As did the dark blue denim jeans he wore.

It was only a short two block walk from the drinking establishment to the tea shop where Spock intended to go.  Not one for small talk, he said nothing along the way.

He allowed Kirk to enter the shop ahead of him.

“How about that table there?” Kirk asked, pointing to a table for two by a side window.

“That is acceptable. What kind of tea would you like?” Spock asked. “If you will have a seat, I will get the tea at the counter.”

“Surprise me,” Kirk said with a smile that definitely made Spock’s heart flutter illogically.

When Spock brought the bought of tea and two cups over to the table, Kirk had just been typing something into a small communication device. He put it away upon Spock’s approach.

“I chose Lapsang.”

“Smells like smoke,” Kirk commented.

“It has smoky elements.”

Kirk leaned back in his chair. “Look at me. Learning about tea and culture.”

Spock arched a brow. “The culture of tea perhaps.”

He laughed. “Probably all the culture I can handle. So. Your test.”

Spock poured the steeped tea into the two cups. “You refer to the Kobayashi Maru?”

“Sure do.”

“It is Starfleet’s test.”

“Semantics. I’ve taken it twice.”

Spock nodded. “I am aware. And failed both times.”

“Ouch.”

“The purpose of the test is not to defeat it. It is to learn how you will face death.”

“Hmm. I hate to lose. So you’re telling me if I took it a third time, I’d probably fail again.”

“You are looking at it incorrectly. There is no way to rescue the ships under attack.”

Kirk sipped his tea. Made a slight face, then took another. “Weird, but not bad. What if I re-programmed the test?”

“You would likely face charges for cheating.”

Kirk laughed again. “You don’t beat around the bush.”

“I am uncertain as to the meaning of that statement.”

“Just a stupid old earth saying. So, pretty much, isn’t the test itself a cheat?” Kirk took another sip. “I thought about it. I know another cadet, she’s Orion. She knows a lot about the systems the Academy uses. “

“You intend to coerce her to use illicit means to pass the test?”

“Well, obviously not since I am telling you about it.” Kirk shook his head. “Geez, Spock. I’m not that stupid.”

“Orions are dangerous,” Spock thought to say.

“The pheromones, yeah. But she wears one of those inhibitor bracelets. That’s how she got accepted into the academy. Anyway, I guess I’ll withdraw my interest in taking it a third time.”

Spock inclined his head. “It might be wise.”

“It’s still bullshit by the way. Uhura. Is she your girlfriend?”

“Negative. We are friends only.”

“Why didn’t she show up?”

Spock had checked his messages while waiting for the pot of tea. “Her shift at the department store ran longer than she anticipated. We have rescheduled.”

“Fortuitous for me then.”

“How so?”

Kirk shook his head. “I could use another friend. Don’t you want to be my friend, Spock?”

Inexplicably, Spock found he did want Kirk as his friend. They clearly had little in common and yet…

“Yes, I do want to be your friend, Jim.”

Kirk winked. “Excellent. Tell me about Vulcans.”

Just Some Stuff

So I got a chapter of For the First Time in My Life I was Happy and a chapter of Where My Demons Hide done this week.  That’s likely it for this week as I have some other commitments and I am feeling rather lazy. I anticipate the other two stories that are due to be updated will make it next week just before I leave. I “may” get a second chapter of Unbonded up  as well but we shall see. No guarantees.

Tomorrow I am going to be seeing Wonder Woman. I can’t wait to see Chris in it. In recent movie happenings, I’ve seen Guardians of the Galaxy 2, King Arthur, and Snatched. I expect to see Pirates of the Caribbean this next coming Tuesday. After that there will a slight pause while I am way.

My trip comes in about 10 days. *Bites nails*.  I hate flying. I’ll be glad when we land on the ground. I will be even gladder when we land in LA a week later! HA. I won’t be bringing my laptop with me on this trip either, so that’s both a relief and a conundrum.

Tomorrow’s flash fic is pretty short! But it will still be up.

Since I am a little overwhelmed with preparing for my trip and getting a couple more updates done, I will likely post old one-shots for the next two Fridays, June 09, and Friday, June 16. Flash Fics will resume from me June 23.

I think that’s about all I have to say right now. Have a great weekend.

Ramblings of the Week, May 01, 2017

chris-pine-all-smiles-for-his-flight-out-of-lax-airport03

At least he’s growing hair back! The stupid beard, though, too LOL

Weekend was pretty chill. I spent most of it not doing anything, really, and that was fine with me. I did do a few chores like laundry that can’t really be put off.

The next two weekends include required social functions so it was nice to have this lull.

I looked at the calendar today and realized it’s only six weeks until my Yellowstone trip. I’ll be incommunicado for the most part from June 11-June 18. We fly out the morning of June 11 and fly home the evening of June 18. I bought the flights a week or so ago and damn they were expensive. You gotta connect too in other cities. On the way we connect through Denver and on the way back we connect through Salt Lake. The airport nearest our destination is Bozeman. Anyway, I know it will be here before I know it.

Over the weekend I chose to delete a work in progress on AO3. The plain truth was I didn’t feel like working on it at present and since it hasn’t garnered much attention, including from the individual who asked me to write it, I decided to delete it. I’ve saved a copy of it in case I ever get back to it, but there are no guarantees. It’s never a good feeling to delete something that some readers may have enjoyed and been following, but bottom line, I needed to do this for myself.

This week I will be updating Dating a Vulcan  and Young and Beautiful . I am not sure about anything else since I have decided to slow down on my updating whenever I can. I have other obligations after all. I might get the next chapter of What Happened to Spock done but there are no guarantees.

As usual we seemed to have skipped over Spring and gone straight to Summer. It’s hot here already. There are rumors that next week may not be as hot but I don’t believe it. May is typically warm here.

I’ve watched numerous episodes of a murder mystery series that originated in Great Britain many years ago now.  Midsummer Murders. The first six seasons are my favorite because I absolutely adore the incredibly adorable Sergeant from those seasons that assists the Chief Inspector. My friend, Kris, is right there with me. Anyway, I recently decided to re-watch his episodes because I honestly think he’s one of my favorite characters ever and he’s cute besides, so, lol, anyway. He had my favorite line of the week.

In an episode about an old folk’s home, he, Troy, is talking with his boss, the chief inspector, Barnaby.

Troy: Who would want to be 89?

Barnaby: Someone who’s 88.

Movie Reviews from Ivan 03.2017 Edition

So I thought it might be fun to post my own personal movie reviews as I begin the 2017 viewing season. We go many Tuesdays and so I end up seeing quite a few. I won’t review all of them and who knows maybe no one will really be interested, but anyway.

I’m going to start with two I’ve seen recently.

And warning warning warning: SPOILERS AHEAD (read at your own risk)

Get Out

I went into this with not many expectations. I’d heard an interview with Jordan Peele who created and directed it. I’ve like his comedy work but this promised to be a little different and based on that interview I expected it to be more like a horror film.

I ended up being pleasantly surprised it was more like a dark thriller than like a gory horror flick. I thought he had a great way of getting you to instantly like the characters he wanted you to like and sympathesize with.

The opening scene is an African American man attempting to find the house of his girlfriend’s parents in a quiet suburb. He’s on the phone and clearly feels uncomfortable with where he is. Even though you only get his dialogue at this point you like this guy already and then bam this car pulls up and starts acting weird and as he realizes he’s in trouble, you know it too.

The main character, Chris, is another African American man who is about to go away for the weekend to meet his white girlfriend’s parents. You like him instantly (he has a dog after all) and you like his friend who works for the TSA who is also taking care of Chris’ dog while he is away for the weekend. The girlfriend, Rose, seems pretty cool too.

She drives them down to see her parents assuring him that her parents are not racist. They don’t appear to be when you meet them but they are vaguely strange and Chris recognizes that instantly as well. They also have a black maid and a black groundskeeper who both behave oddly and rather like zombies.  Her father is a neurologist and her mother a psychiatrist. When they find out Chris smokes they attempt to talk him into undergoing hypnosis to change the habit but he politely declines.

Eventually he meets her brother too who is also vaguely off but Chris endures things pretty well. They inform Chris and Rose that an annual party is that weekend too so Chris knows he is going to be forced to meet even more people.

Anyway, as the film progresses you realize this family is even more off than you initially thought and Chris is basically hypnotized against his will. He speaks of this and his doubts to Rose and she admits to him that she may have been wrong about her family and she apologizes.

The party happens and Chris meets a lot of really strange white people and one African American who is probably in his late twenties but is married to a white woman probably in her sixties. Chris realizes this is odd to say the least. And the guy acts really weird and also has the same sort of zombie qualities the maid and groundskeeper have. But when Chris flashes a camera in his face, this dude freaks out and yells, Get Out.

Eventually it is discovered by Chris that the family, through the help of Rose, abducts young black people to use for their bodies. The father puts the brains of dying white friends and family who have bid on the abducted into the fresh, healthy bodies. It’s bizarre and twisted and works really well, actually. Chris is their latest victim, though he didn’t realize it at first.

You root for him to get away from this freak show and eventually with the help of his very funny best friend, the TSA agent, he does.

Logan

Up front I will say I was not a fan of X-Men Origins: Wolverine or of The Wolverine. I did really like Logan in the first X-Men movies as well as in X-Men: First Class and as well as X-Men: Days of Future Past.

In this one we find Logan to be an older character who is disillusioned and drinks too much. There also appears to be something quite wrong with him because he doesn’t heal like he used to. He’s been working as a chauffeur in a limo to make money and he lives in Mexico with an albino mutant named Caliban and Charles Xavier, who is very old now.

Charles has mental issues and Logan has to keep him constantly drugged because of his powerful mind. If he doesn’t take his drugs, he has seizures and all hell breaks loose. It seems clear from the implications that this has happened with Charles before and this is why Logan now keeps him in a bunker in Mexico. His plan is to one day buy a boat for he and Charles to live on in the middle of the ocean, presumably so they can not hurt anyone.

He runs into a woman who desperately begs for his help but he initially rejects her. Eventually she tracks him down and tells him about a little girl named Laura. The woman eventually is killed by the bad guys and Logan and Charles are left trying to keep Laura safe from them. It is learned that she was created by evil scientists who created children from Mexican women and mutant DNA. Laura is actually Logan’s daughter as he was used for her.

My main objection was, as I said before, too many action scenes. I know it is an action movie but they began to become tedious. This was actually one of my complaints about the previous Wolverine movies. I also think it went on about 30 minutes longer than it needed to.

But as I have thought about it one of my main things was that I think there was a major plot that was rather not in character with Charles Xavier as I saw him in the previous movies.

The three main characters are on the run from these absolutely dreadful bad guys. The bad guys have found them time and time again and have shown they are capable of hurting anyone that gets in their way.

They run across this nice little family that have a farm and horses through a near accident with the horses on the highway. They end up helping the family get their horses together. The wife offers to cook them a meal for their trouble and Logan, rightly, immediately says no. Charles, however, insists on going to their house AND accepts their invitation to stay the night. Charles, basically, knowingly puts this innocent family into harm’s way and of course they end up butchered by the bad guys, and I just don’t believe the character I have seen would have done that. Charles knew the dangers they were facing and basically sacrificed this family for his own selfish needs. I did not dig that at all.

So obviously, these are only my opinions. Most people have liked Logan and I did like it better than the other Wolverine offerings just not enough for me to personally recommend it.

Midweek Ramblings 03/15 Edition

Okay so I went to see Logan last night. It was okay. Better than the previous Wolverine movies but still not that thrilling to me. I guess for me the original X-Men movies were the best and the recent offerings are just meh. Was nice to see Patrick Stewart of course as I am a big fan of him, especially in Star Trek. My biggest issue with Logan was I thought it went on too long and had to many ‘action’ scenes.

Yesterday these arrived. And they are ‘beyond’ cool. LOL.

Mugs

Here are some pictures from my recent adventures. The pictures with the house and gazebo are from a winery called Graveyard. They had a chocolate port there called Deliverance. Yummy. The picture with the rock in the distance in the water is Morro Rock. I will be seeing it much closer April 01.

Spirk Recommendation

I especially love the song in this one. It’s Stay by Hurts. I had to have it, of course.
