Say Something. I think it’s Say Something! I remember the title! I mean, I’m 99% sure that was the title and now I’m second guessing myself but I’m going with my gut here.
Yeah, there’s only one of those. Even I knew that one! I’ve read it more than once.
I remember the first time being shocked at the premise, that you’d come up with that idea. I doubt anybody else ever has! Jim and Cupcake.
So then I remember going to TOS and seeing when the original Hendorff (who was NOWHERE near as buff as his AOS self) died. It was a very non-spectacular death in The Apple.
It was. It came from a short I wrote one time on the blog and it ended up being a reader at the time’s “jam” so to speak and I expanded on it to write Say Something.
Yes and everyone called him “Hen”dorf in the Apple except De who called him “Hein”dorf. It always amused me that De just pronounced things the way he thought they should be and to hell with whatever everyone else said, ha ha
I actually re read it myself (and edited it slightly. Back then I referred to Jim as Kirk in several parts which is not my preference, I prefer to call him Jim so I went back and changed most of that)
Well, I hate to be the weirdo here, but I always very much liked that he was called Kirk in this. Made it very distinctive. Gave it that vibe/feel I thought you were going for. Course, that’s just me! haha
Ha ha , nope, I always thought it strange when writer’s in Jim’s POV think of him as Kirk. Who thinks of himself as the last name? I sure don’t! ha ha. So to me calling yourself Kirk seems strange. But that’s me. Obviously it doesn’t bother everyone
That may be a southern thing? I’ve always heard people called by their last name. Even in elementary school, we called each other by our last names sometimes, as did some of our teachers and all coaches. I of course didn’t even think about it, definitely not enough to think of it as regional. It was like being called a nickname. So of course I thought of myself that way too. Hmmm now that you mention, we teachers often called each other by last name. My very first principal whom I really liked, a kind of 28-ish year old sport barbie doll type, always smiled up at me and called me by my last name when I entered her office. I just never thought about it before.
No no, I don’t mean OTHER people calling you by your last name. That’s normalish and doesn’t have anything to do with regional I think. But thinking of YOURSELF by your last name is a bit unusual I think. I saw a fic on AO3 not long ago where WInona called her son “Kirk”. Why in the world would she call her own son by his last name? Bizarre to me. But another officer? Sure. Another teacher? Sure. But to call yourself “Smith” if that’s your last name is a little strange. To me. So yeah, I don’t generally have Kirk thik of himself as Kirk. That’s my long explanation
I’m reading Say Anything and I think you switched a Jim and Kirk where you might not have wanted to
It is with extreme regret that I must inform you that your son, Gerald, gave his life in the line of duty today while patrolling a planet that had issued a distress signal. It was my pleasure to serve with Gerald, who was a fine officer and a great friend to me personally. Words cannot express how at a loss I am to tell you how very sorry I am. He will be greatly missed by the crew and officers he served with on the Enterprise and is a particularly poignant loss to his many friends. I’ll never forget your son and we will forever carry him in our hearts.

haha – your nickname for yourself because it brings good feelings because mostly only other people who like you use it that way? I dunno.
