October 2023 Continuing Story

Holding onto his mug of coffee the next morning, Jim walked around the farmhouse trying to figure out what was bothering him.

His sleep had been disturbed by dreams. Not necessarily nightmares but troubling.

Most he couldn’t remember in the light of day but there was one particular one that he did recall at least some of it. A sex dream. He was naked and sweating, lying on his back, his legs drawn up and a muscular back hovered over him.

At least that was all he could see of the other person.

To say Jim had been startled by the implications of the dream was an understatement. And ever since then the images kept flashing through his mind like a disjointed movie.

There was absolutely no one he could speak to that could explain such a dream to him. No one he could confide in.

And wasn’t that odd? Why didn’t Jim seem to have any friends? People had friends, right? But as he surveyed the inside of his home he couldn’t think of any.

He’d had Becky. And he had recognized Clyde, but he didn’t really think Clyde was a friend.

The other thing was why couldn’t he remember ever making love to Becky. They were close. She wanted to get married. He’d agreed he loved her.. Was she a virgin? Somehow Jim didn’t think so. But whatever the case he should know, right?

The farmhouse looked so impersonal. No family pictures. No pictures of any kind. No art on the walls.

“I should call my mom,” Jim said out loud. He walked over to the phone hooked to the wall in the kitchen. He lifted the receiver and stared at the buttons. “What the fuck is her number?”

He slammed down the phone, frustrated. What was wrong with him?

Jim finished his coffee and headed to the college for his job.

When he’d finished teaching two classes he found a note pinned to his office door.

The dean wants to see you.

Jim frowned and snatched the note off his door and entered his office. He’d just given a written test and had a hundred tests to grade. He didn’t have time to see Dean Halloway, but it wasn’t as though he could refuse.

He set the papers down on his desk, left his briefcase too, and prepared to see the dean.

Just as he turned away the man with the wool beanie passed by his office, once more staring in at him.

“Hey! Hey wait! Wait a second.”

He rushed from his office but the hall was empty.

October 2023 Continuing Story

Part 3 (end of first chapter)

Jim narrowed his eyes at the short but lanky man with the moustache standing by his trash cans.

“Clyde?”

“Evening, Mr. Kirk.”

“What are you doing?” He lowered the crowbar.

“Becky called me from New York, said you had some racoon problems and to come on out and set up some traps.”

Clyde was Becky’s cousin. Didn’t have a very high IQ but he was a nice man.

Clyde stepped away from the cans. “I don’t see any signs of racoons, Mr. Kirk. But I set out traps anyhow.”

“It’s Jim. What do you see signs of?”

Clyde shrugged. “Nothing really. No signs of rats or racoons. But maybe you wouldn’t see anything specific. Traps are set now though, so I’ll come check on them in a day or two if that’s all right with you, Mr. Kirk.”

“Yeah, that’s fine.” Jim glanced around where the trash cans were and over toward the front yard. “See anything else around, Clyde?”

“Like what?”

Yeah, what, Jim? Glowing red eyes?

“I don’t really know, I guess. Anything weird I suppose.”

Clyde looked at Jim like maybe he was crazy and Jim wasn’t sure he was far off. So he smiled.

“You want a shot of whiskey for your trouble?”

“Wasn’t any trouble, but I’ll take the whiskey.”

Jim hesitated. He didn’t necessarily want Clyde in the house. He didn’t really have any issues with Clyde, but he didn’t exactly trust him either. Becky had mentioned once that her cousin sometimes stole things. Not usually from people he knew, but still.

“I’ll bring it right out,” Jim said. “You wait here.”

“I will, Mr. Kirk.”

Jim went into his house and over to his liquor cabinet. He quickly poured two shots of whiskey and then brought them back out the front door. True to his word, Clyde stood just where Jim had left him.

He handed a shot to Clyde and kept one for himself.

Clyde didn’t immediately drink the shot, but instead asked, “You and Becky going to be married someday?”

Jim wasn’t sure exactly how to answer that. For Clyde, yeah, but most especially for himself.

So he settled on the vague, “She wants to, I think.”

Clyde nodded and thew back the shot. Jim followed suit, feeling it burn down his throat.

Clyde handed the empty shot glass to Jim. “I’ll be on my way now, Mr. Kirk. I’ll check back on those traps like I said. And if you need anything else, you give me a call.

Jim called after him as he headed for his truck, “You want some money?”

“Nope, that’s all right.”

And just a few minutes later he was gone. Jim watched him until the lights from his truck faded away out of sight.

He set the shot glasses down on the porch and walked to where the pumpkins and scarecrows were. He clenched the crowbar.

Looking for what? Again, he really had no clue. And not surprisingly he didn’t see anything anyway.

With a shake of his head at his only foolishness, grabbed the glasses and went back into the house. Double locking the front door. Then he double locked the back door too.

And just before he went to sleep, he thought he heard a whisper.

“Jim.”

A continuation of the Flash on April 6, 2020

Jim, the human boy, was skittish, and Spock supposed he could not blame him, considering what Spock had learned had happened to him. And to the others.

Not that there were a lot of survivors that had been brought to Vulcan. And most that were, were young like Jim.

This human boy jumped at everything, which cause Spock to feel sorry for him. He had obviously been through a lot.

“Come, Jim. It is only a little farther.”

Jim’s steps faltered. “Where?”

“My home. As I said, you can bathe and eat and become warm again.”

Jim shivered though it was not cold. “Not sure I will ever be warm.”

“You will be safe there,” Spock promised.

“Your house?”

“Yes, Jim.”

“And I get to stay there?” he asked shyly.

“Yes.”

Jim took a step forward, then stopped again. “You sure?”

Spock nodded. “My father has a habit of fostering children. There is already an older human female in our household. My mother is human. Do not worry, you will be welcome.”

But still Jim hesitated so Spock reached out his hand in a gesture probably most Vulcans would not do. But Spock was not most.

Jim blinked and put his hand in Spock’s and Spock led him to the house and inside.

Flash Fic Monday, April 06, 2020

“Hi. My name’s Jim,” the blond haired Terran boy with the startling blue eyes spoke first. His gaze skittered across the room, anywhere but landing on Spock. The Terran boy was dressed in little more than rags and was so thin Spock could see bones sticking out in places.

“Spock.”

The boy, Jim, nodded. His tongue darted out to trace his lips. “You’re Vulcan?”

“Obviously.” He immediately regretted his harsh tone when he saw the boy flinch. “It is the ears. They give me away,” he said, attempting to inject humor into his tone.

The gaze flittered again and then landed on Spock at last, eyes widening.

“Come. My home is not far. You can have a warm bath, put on clean clothes, and have something to eat.”

For a long time, Jim just stared. Then there was just the barest lip tremble. “Yeah?”

“Yes, Jim. Come. You are safe.”Spock barely knew this boy, but he knew he would make sure no one would hurt him again.

Sleigh Riding

“You are to come with me.”

Spock blinked and looked up from the document he was perusing on his terminal in his apartment. He stared at his nephew, Vanik. “How and when did you come in?”

Vanik straightened to his full height. Which was not altogether that high at four feet. The boy was dressed quite casually in jeans and a maroon colored sweater with a snow man on it. Likely purchased by his mother, Anoria, his brother, Sybok’s human wife.

“A moment ago,” Vanik replied.

Spock barely refrained from a most illogical sigh. “You copied my palm print and hacked into the system to acquire entrance.”

Vanik pursed his lips. “Perhaps. Be that as it may, I still require you to come with me.”

“For what purpose?”

“We are meeting Jim.”

“Who is Jim?”

Vanik rolled his eyes. “You know who Jim is. Since you refused to take my advice and inquire into his availability to dine with you, I have been forced to take matters into my own hands. We are meeting him for a one horse open sleigh ride.”

Spock turned fully from his terminal to glare at his nephew. “I did not agree to these plans.”

“I agreed for you. You will need your coat as it is liable to be rather cold when the horse pulls the sleigh. We are meeting at the park as they apparently have such frivolities this time of year to amuse citizens.”

Spock almost still refused for he did not care to be manipulated. But since he did want to see the blond human from the department store again, he didn’t wish to spite himself, so Spock rose to retrieve his coat.

He ignored Vanik’s satisfied look.

The park was, at least, a short walk from Spock’s apartment. They made it in no time, and Jim was already waiting beside a sign that read “Sleigh Rides, 60 credits for 30 minutes.”

Even before they reached Jim, Spock’s pulse had increased at an alarming rate. Jim’s cheeks were red from the cold wind, but his blue eyes shined like the prettiest of crystals. He smiled at them with stunning white teeth.

“Hey there.”

“Hello Jim. Thank you for meeting us,” Vanik spoke up. He clutched Spock’s sleeve. “You recall having made the acquaintance of my uncle, Spock.”

“Yeah. Nice to see you again, Spock.” He turned that smile exclusively on Spock, who felt his own cheeks warm.

“Uh.”

Jim’s gaze remained on him for a second before turning to Vanik rather quizzically. Spock didn’t blame him, but Jim made him rather tong-tied.

Spock looked at the sign instead and directed his words to his nephew. “60 credits for 30 minutes seems unreasonably high.”

“Oh, don’t worry about that,” Jim said. “I’ve got it.”

Vanik shook his head and stepped forward to the man waiting there. “Dad presented me with the credits.”

And before either Spock or Jim could stop him, Vanik paid the driver of their sleigh.

Spock eyed the small seating in the back of the sleigh. It would be tight for two adults let alone two adults with a child.

“After you, Jim,” Vanik said, gesturing to the sleigh.

Jim shrugged slightly and crawled up into the seat, his jeans stretching across his bottom as he maneuvered into it. Not that Spock stared or anything.

Vanik then told him to get in.

Spock did, but the whole while he kept thinking all three of them would not fit. Both he and Jim were fairly tall and…

“Vanik…” Spock knew that it was his nephew who wished to try the sleigh so he was about to volunteer to stay behind and let Vanik ride with Jim.

But then, to his shock, Vanik stepped back.

“Please take them around the park,” Vanik told the sleigh driver.

“Wha—”

But the horse driven sleigh was already in motion. Both Spock and Jim turned as one to look back at the half Vulcan child who waved at them.

Jim then looked at Spock and laughed. “I think that was planned.”

“Most definitely,” Spock agreed.

Jim smiled and for a moment he remained silent as the sleigh traveled through the park. It was more a carriage, at that, for there was no snow or anything. It was still San Francisco, after all.

“Sorry about that,” Jim finally said, softly.

“For what do you apologize?”

“Well. I think your nephew figured out that I kind of like you and so he forced this on you.”

Spock’s heart stuttered in his side. “Only…kind of?”

Jim blinked at him. “What?”

“I was certain that Vanik set this up due to his realization that I am…interested in you.” Spock paused. “As well.”

The smile he received was a blindingly beautiful gift. As was the simply spoken question.

“Yeah?”

Spock looked straight ahead at the park, carefully moving his hand to rest over Jim’s hand, which rested on his thigh. Jim didn’t move his hand away. And in fact turned it upward, until they were palm to palm.

And though it was a different winter song that declared something about it being thrilling, Spock decided that it definitely applied here.

Jim moved closer to him in the seat.

“Yes,” Spock finally answered. “Yes.”
