If I were writing the next part after Beyond’s conclusion…

Very much pre/slash

“Oops! Sorry, Spock. Didn’t realize anyone was out here.” Jim paused with his hand on the door handle of an outside patio area of the conference room where his birthday party was even now taking place.

Spock turned away from observing a rather bizarre looking flowering shrub to face Jim. “There is no need for you to depart, Captain.”

Jim let go of the door and allowed it to close once more. He approached Spock. “Jim. We’re not on duty and it’s my birthday, so I insist.” He smiled.

“Jim. You have left your own party?”

“I needed some air,” he admitted. “The whole thing was getting…overwhelming.”

Spock inclined his head. “It’s not like you to be overwhelmed by a party.”

“Well…it’s been a long few days.” He searched Spock’s face. “And you? How’s the recovery going?”

“It is progressing at its expected pace.”

Jim laughed. “I see. What are you doing out here?”

“I, too, needed some air.”

“Hmm. Alone? I saw you and Uhura inside together. Looked like you guys were reconciling.”

Spock looked away and back to the shrubs. “Nyota and I will always remain close but our romantic relationship will not resume.”

“Oh.” Jim nodded. “That’s surprising. Why?” He held up his hands and shook his head. “You know what? That’s so not my business. Sorry.”

“You are my friend, are you not?”

“I’d like to think so.”

“Then it is permissible under this context.” Spock gave a little sigh. “Our romantic relationship was an old and comfortable one, but it has run its course. The passion we once experienced is no longer there and our interests have strayed to others.”

Jim shrugged. “It’s common in long term relationships to lose a little bit of the initial fiery passion, Spock. I just…she seemed to really appreciate that you wanted to rescue her.”

“I am aware. But there is more to it.”

“Okay. Well, I’m sorry. I know you two cared a great deal about each other.”

“And still do.”

“Then it was her decision?”

Spock shook his head. “Mutual. You misunderstand, Jim, I am not suffering from what Humans would call a broken heart over the end of my relationship with Nyota.”

“I’m glad of that. I wouldn’t want you requesting a transfer.” He smiled to indicate he was mostly teasing.

Spock suddenly looked even more uncomfortable than he already did. “I…there was a time when I considered resigning from Starfleet.”

Jim half-smiled. “I know.”

“I am not referring to the time directly after Nero when Vulcans were looking for a new planet.”

“I know that, too. You wanted to leave recently.”

Spock gaped at him in surprise. “I was not aware you knew.”

“Some members of my crew think as captain I should know that sort of information.”

“McCoy,” Spock guessed.

“Yeah,” Jim admitted. “You could have talked to me. But in all honesty I had plans of my own. They seem stupid now.”

“Plans?”

“The best laid as they say. Anyway, they didn’t work out and I’m staying in command of the Enterprise when she’s ready. I’d like to think you’ll be by my side as my first, Spock.”

“I intend to be,” Spock said, seriously. “I no longer think of leaving.”

“Great.” Jim sighed and glanced back toward the building. “I guess I need to get back to the party. You coming?”

Spock nodded and fell into step beside him as they reentered the building together.

A conclusion

Jim woke to the smell of coffee and pancakes. Pumpkin pancakes, it seemed. His favorite.

He turned to face Spock, but the bed was empty.

So he wasn’t dreaming of someone making him breakfast.

For a moment, his gaze stayed on the new titanium ring on his left hand. The Vulcan inscription read One and Together.

Both his and Spock’s hand the same inscription, of course. And that had been Spock’s doing way back when.

The wedding had been spur of the moment, really, on a very brief mandated appearance at HQ. And yet even with just a few hours notice, Spock had managed to get a couple of inexpensive rings engraved.

The best laid plans, Jim mused as his gaze went to the ornament box he’d bought to present their new rings to Spock.

He rose from their bed, washed up in the bathroom, and went downstairs to the lower half of their townhome.

Sure enough, Spock had turned on the lights on the Christmas tree and placed a cup of coffee and pumpkin pancakes in Jim’s place at the dining room table.

“Good morning,” Jim said, as he took his seat. “Looks good.”

“Made from scratch,” Spock replied. “Merry Christmas.”

“Sit down with me.”

Spock carried a plate of pancakes to the table and sat in his usual seat.

Jim reached for his hand and Spock placed his hand in Jim’s.

“It’s okay,” he said softly.

“It is not okay that I hurt and disappointed you.”

“We’ve always known about our duty interfering with our personal lives.”

Spock frowned. “Maybe it’s time we reevaluate.”

Jim laughed softly. “Like what? Retire?”

“Would that be so bad?” Spock asked. “I should have let you know the meeting was off the rails.”

He laughed again. “Man, are you being influenced by me.”

“It was. I could get no one to shut up. And I admit I did not notice how late it really was.” Spock shook his head. “And those sound like many excuses and in reality I have none.”

“I wouldn’t say that. It’s not like you could stand up and say, hey, my husband is waiting for me.”

“I could have. I should have. You were upset.”

“I was, yeah. But I’ve had time to think about it. I’m not saying I don’t wish things worked out the way I planned last night. But there’ve been plenty of times I was late because of some stupid Starfleet or Federation thing. And in the end, there’s no one else I’d rather be stood up by then you.”

Spock looked confused and then shook his head. “That is illogical.”

Jim smiled. “So’s that slightly longer canine tooth on your left side of your mouth.”

Spock arched a brow.

“It’s cute. It’s always been cute. My point is, I don’t want to be with anyone but you, even if sometimes I still want to tear the bangs right off your forehead. I love you, warts and all.”

“There are some that say I am unworthy of you,” Spock whispered.

“Right back at ya.” Jim squeezed his hand. “We decided long ago we didn’t care what anyone said about us.”

“I know. But I still apologize. I am sorry I ruined Christmas Eve and I will endeavor to do better. And the new rings are appreciated.”

“Inscription and all.”

“Indeed. And when you are finished with breakfast, I would like to go for a walk.”

“Okay, sure.”

“What’s this?” Jim asked when Spock brought Jim back to the park and a live tree decorated with Christmas lights.

Spock took both of Jim’s hands in his.

“Will you marry me…again?”

Jim laughed, moved close to kiss him. “You bet I will. And I promise not to be late.”

Spock was engrossed in correspondence from his father when a tiny hand touched the sleeve of his upper arm.

“Fix it.”

He turned his gaze to see his daughter with Jim staring at him with wide eyes and a tear-stained face. She had in her hand the stuffed reindeer Jim had secured for her for her birthday. At first he could not see any issue with it, but then noticed an ear clutched separately between her fingers.

“What happened?” Spock asked, as he scooped her up into his lap. She instantly looped her free arm around his neck to snuggle closer.

“He got his ear caught in the gate of his reindeer pen,” Amanda told him.

“Did he? And how did that happen?”

“Trying to escape.”

Spock frowned. “Why would he want to escape? Is he not happy here with you?”

“Sure he is,” she told him, her bottom lip trembling. “But Martin misses the other reindeers.”

“I had not thought about that. No doubt he wishes for a companion of some sort. Other than a humanoid one of course.”

Amanda smiled a little. “Exactly, Father. Fix it.”

Spock took the reindeer and his ear and examined it. “Give me one moment while I see what I have for this.”

He carefully untangled his daughter from his neck and set her on his chair by herself, taking the reindeer with him.

“Wait there. I will be back.”

Spock went into the bathroom and examined the contents of the medicine cabinet. He also took a moment to message Jim.

When he returned to the living room, Amanda waited expectantly with her hands folded neatly in her lap.

“Can you fix Martin, Father?”

Spock held up a box of bandages, a thermal generator, and super glue.

Amanda shook her head. “No. You gotta sew his ear back on!”

“Not just glue it?”

She huffed.

“I admit that sewing is not a skill I ever learned.”

“Daddy can sew.”

Spock withheld a sigh and just stopped himself from sarcastically and illogically saying ‘Daddy is perfect’.  Vulcans were by nature not given to fits of childishness.

“Then we will wait for Daddy to come home to repair Martin.”

She made a face but Spock distracted her with a promise of reading a story while they waited for Daddy.

An hour later, Jim appeared, looking gorgeous and sunny, and stealing both of their hearts all over again.

Amanda ran to him, flinging herself straight into his arms. He laughed and spun her around. Spock went and kissed him much more sedately, though with just as much enthusiasm.

“Martin’s ear got torn off, Daddy.”

“Mm. So I heard. We’ll sew that right up.”

Amanda shot Spock a smug look. He arched his brow back at her.

Behind his back, Jim shoved a bag at Spock.

Spock stepped back as Jim brought their daughter further into the living room. He opened the bag and pulled out another stuffed reindeer.

He followed them to the living room.

“Guess what,” Spock said.

“What?”

“Just a moment ago Santa dropped another reindeer down so that Martin could have a companion,” Spock told her, feeling fairly silly, but happy to do so when she smiled excitedly and clapped her hand as he presented it to her.

“Yay!”

“What’s this one’s name?” Jim asked.

Amanda pursed her lips. “Cornelius.”

Spock nodded. “A very wise name.”

Jim smiled. “Okay, let’s sew up Martin’s ear and he can show Cornelius the reindeer pen.”

Barely withholding a smile of his own, Spock returned to his seat as Amanda and Jim went to the sewing machine.

He typed out to his father.

Life is very good.

Never fear, you can find me here!

“Here comes Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus, right down Santa Claus Lane. Vixen and Blitzen and all his reindeers pulling on the reins. Bells are ringing, children singing, all is merry and bright. So hang your stockings and say your prayers, cause Santa Claus comes tonight.”

“It is difficult to believe that once more you are indulging my nephew with this.”

Jim glanced up from the cookies he was rolling out on a wooden board to look at his boyfriend who stood just outside the kitchen looking as grumpy as Bones.

“This?”

“Christmas in July. Vanik has filled your head with this non—”

Jim arched a brow.

Spock stopped, cleared his throat. “Notion. This notion.”

“You were going to say nonsense.”

“A poor word choice.”

“You bet it was,” Jim said, coolly. “What in the world makes you think it’s only Vanik that wants to do this?”

“Well.” Spock stopped and looked quite uncomfortable.

“Sometimes Humans like to do silly things they consider fun and as my mate it is your duty to indulge me.”

“I was unaware that you desired to participate in Christmas in July on your own without influence of my nephew’s wishes.”

“You didn’t ask,” Jim said. “And you know what? Even if it was just him, what’s wrong with indulging a child once in a while?”

Spock closed his mouth.

Jim snorted. “That’s what I thought. I know logic dictates that brain of yours, babe, but sometimes you need to set aside logic and just have fun. Or pretend you’re having fun anyway. And it’s not even a big deal. All we are going to do is have a few decorations, some holiday food like cookies, and watch Christmas movies while wearing our Christmas in July shirts.”

“Christmas in July shirts?” Now his boyfriend looked dumbfounded. It was a good look, Jim decided.

“Yep. Yours is on a hanger in the bedroom.” He smiled.

Spock blinked. “Very well, Jim. I will do my best to…have fun.”

“Excellent. Now let me get back to my gingerbread Vulcans.”

This time Spock snorted, but he turned and walked away, appropriately chastened, Jim decided.

Flash Fic, July 05, 2023

There was sort of a request for a “melancholy” one and this one starts out a bit that way but soon the tides change!

Jim had been getting melancholy this time of year for a while now.

Well, in all honesty, ever since the Enterprise’s last mission. Which was, what, six years ago now.

They’d had a good run, all of them, and he kept in touch with a lot of his crew.

But every time July came around it reminded him of their absolutely ridiculous, silly Christmas in July celebrations. Which he’d initiated the first year. It had been so popular on the ship long after Jim probably would have ended it.

And the last one they’d had, before the end, had been when he’d shared his first and only kiss with his first officer. Under the mistletoe.

It had gone on far longer than it should have. Jim hadn’t been able to let go of Spock’s collar to let him end the kiss. It had taken Bones’ clearing his throat rather pointedly for Jim to finally let go, step back, and laugh with everyone else.

It didn’t get repeated or even talked about before the end. Before they all ended the mission and the last of the crew departed.

Spock for New Vulcan. With his wife, Nyota.

And Jim here to San Francisco, where he’d accepted a promotion to admiral.

And his own, rather ill-fated marriage to Helena. That was over now. Had been for a good two years. It did have one benefit, though, Jim could not regret, his beautiful three-year-old daughter, Jessica.

Jim also knew that Spock’s marriage to Uhura had ended too. Only two years in. He didn’t know all the details, but he’d heard that she had cheated on him.  In their long distant conversations, his here, and Spock’s from New Vulcan, his friend had never disclosed the particulars. Jim hadn’t pressed.

And though Jim kept in touch with Spock, he hadn’t seen him in person in six years.

Which was about to change.

He rose from behind his desk and went to the window looking down on the city. They were in the middle of a heat wave and it made it difficult to think of Christmas in any way. Even the July fake version.

Still, Jim was getting a gift.

“Admiral?”

He turned to hit the intercom on his desk. “Yes?”

“Ambassador Spock is here.”

For a moment, Jim thought of that other Ambassador Spock, long gone now, but still very much missed. But no, his Spock was an ambassador now.

“Send him in.”

Only a moment later, Spock stepped into Jim’s office, the door closing behind him. Spock’s gaze went to the strand of Christmas lights Jim had strung across his desk. His brow arched.

Jim laughed. “Yeah, I know what you’re going to say. Old habits is all.”

“You are looking very fit, Admiral.”

“Thank you. You too, Ambassador.” And here Jim’s smile softened. He stepped away from the window and approached Spock. “God, it’s good to see you. Is it okay if I hug you?”

“Indeed.”

And so, Jim did, throwing his arms around Spock and holding on for dear life. That familiar scent drifted over him, and he squeezed tighter.

Finally, he pulled back but not out of Spock’s arms.

“Not that I’m not absolutely thrilled to see you, but what brings you here, Spock?”

“You,” Spock replied. “More specifically I wanted to see you. I have spent the last few years on New Vulcan figuring out what I wanted for the remainder of my life.”

Jim gave him a quizzical look.   “And that involves me?”

“That is my hope.” Spock paused. “Admiral…Jim, do you think we could go somewhere far less official and more private?”

Jim’s heart rate increased but he tried to tamp down his excitement and hope. He’d been disappointed before and that kind of disappointment was soul killing. So he made himself say calmly, “Sure my apartment is only a block away. Let’s go.”

Jim couldn’t help but notice that Spock watched him carefully as they made the short trip from HQ to his apartment.

“What?” Jim finally asked as they entered the apartment building.

“It is simply remarkable that you haven’t seemed to age a day since I last saw you.”

He laughed. “Yeah, what two days ago? I haven’t.”

“I meant in person, of course.”

Jim nodded. “I know, I’m teasing. It’s the super blood, I guess. Bones threatens that I’m going to live forever.”

He hit the button to the lift that would take him to the seventh floor where his apartment was located.

Neither of them said anything else until Jim let them into his apartment.

“The place is a bit of a mess. I wasn’t…I haven’t been home in a couple of days so when I got word you were coming I didn’t think to hurry home to clean.”

Jim was embarrassed that he had clothes strewn about and dirty dishes in the sink. He was no housekeeper.

Spock was eyeing him. “You have not been home?”

“It’s not what you think. Well, what you probably think. I have a small room at HQ I make use of sometimes.” He shrugged.

“You work too much.”

“Likely. But Helena took Jessica with her to visit her family in Colorado so there wasn’t any particular reason to go home.” Jim smiled self-consciously. “I’m not seeing anyone and most of my friends don’t really live around here.”

“Then perhaps my reason for coming to see you will be more welcome than I had even anticipated and hoped for.”

“Want to sit?” Jim gestured to the sofa, after picking up a few things left there. “You want tea or  something?”

“Negative.” Spock moved to the sofa and sat. “Please join me.”

Jim was only mildly surprised when Spock held his hand toward Jim to come and take it to sit directly next to Spock. It wasn’t completely normal but on the other hand during the last years they’d seen each other they often spent time together in close proximity.

No doubt why Jim had always hoped…but no. Right after that kiss under the mistletoe, Spock had, once again, reconciled with Uhura after yet another break from their relationship. And Jim’s hopes had been dashed, he thought, for good.

But now he took Spock’s warm hand and allowed himself to be drawn down beside Spock.

Spock let out a very long breath. “I have made a number of mistakes over the years, but the most impactful and regretful one was not coming to terms with my romantic feelings toward you.”

Jim blinked. “Did you just say romantic feelings?”

“Yes. I have been in love with you since…it is difficult to pinpoint the exact moment but I have loved you for the entirety of our service together and beyond.”

Eyes wide, Jim stated. “What?”

“There simply is no excuse for my inability to declare my deeper emotions and to maintain what I believed was the ‘safe’ relationship with Nyota. It did a disservice to both of you and ultimately my inability to commit to her emotionally led to the end of our marriage.”

“Spock—”

“No matter the outcome of my current declaration, whether you can ever forgive my cowardice and return my feelings, I can no longer pretend that my own behavior and thought process was quite abhorrent. I am most certainly responsible for your decision to enter into marriage with Helena, therefore further delaying my confession.”

Spock,” Jim said, far more firmly. He put his hand on Spock’s leg and squeezed. “Stop.”

“You do not wish to hear—”

“No. I don’t want to waste one more second of us.” Jim moved his lips next to Spock’s and kissed him thoroughly.

Jim.” Spock’s hand came up to cradle Jim’s head as he deepened their kiss.

When it broke, Jim grinned. “Guess what?”

Spock shook his head. “I am unable to guess or form any thought right now other than I love you.” Jim held up a twig of mistletoe. “Merry Christmas in July. Greatest present ever.”

Flash Fic June 21, 2023 (Plus Two)

This is the epilogue to the 5 plus 1 earlier. Enjoy!

“Happy Anniversary!” Jim called out as he exited their bathroom, dressed only in a towel and rubbing another towel over his hair to dry it.

Spock who still lounged in bed, yes quite unusual but it had been a rather tiring night, arched a brow. “It is not our anniversary. We bonded on Stardate 07.2264. We went through an Earth marriage on Stardate 09.2264. By my calculations neither anniversary applies.”

Jim smiled and went to the wardrobe closet for his uniform. “Yep, all that’s true. We should plan a big celebration for those by the way. It’s been…four…no five years now.”

Spock rose from the bed and walked over to where Jim was fussing with his clothing. “Agreed, if you wish. But I am still puzzled by your comment a moment ago.”

“It’s the fifth anniversary of when you first told me you loved me.” Jim laughed then, turning just a slight shade of pink as he pulled his command tunic over his head.  “Lame, huh?”

Spock considered. Leaned against the wall beside Jim.  “No, it is not lame.”

Jim smiled. “What are you thinking?”

“I am thinking about when I first realized my deeper emotional regard for you.”

“Yeah? When was that?”

He shook his head. “When you died in the warp core.”

Jim froze, eyes wide. “But you never said anything. Not then. Not after when I was in the hospital.”

“There is an old Earth expression that applies. I did not want to rock the boat. Nyota and I had reconciled during the mission and you seemed enamored of Carol Marcus and she with you. I had no guarantee you returned my feelings and I chose not to take that chance given what the aftermath would be if you did not.” Spock exhaled. “I apologize.”

“You know, it’s okay. I took a long time to say it after I realized too, so I guess I can’t really blame you. And we’re here now, as we are.”

“When did you realize, Jim?”

Jim made a face. “Not sure I should tell you.”

“If you wish to keep the information to yourself, I accept that.”

His husband sighed. “I realized when it hurt so bad that you filed a report behind my back and I got demoted and we weren’t going to be on the same ship. And how much it hurt that you didn’t even really consider me a friend. That’s when.”

Spock moved forward and drew Jim into his arms. “I am sorry, adun.”

“That was a long time ago. We’re good now.”

Spock nodded and held him tighter.  “Yes. I love you, Jim.”

“I love you too.”

“And…Happy Anniversary.”

J’s Birthday Flash (and Flag Day)

“I cannot see!”

The crowd was thick so Jim could understand why Vanik was too short to see the parade for J Ashton’s 150th birthday celebration.

The now legendary Starfleet Captain birthday had been June 14th. For the last sixty years there had been a parade and festival to honor Captain Ashton’s heroics. She had died at the ripe old age of ninety.

Jim considered. Vanik was just a kid but he was a Vulcan kid so he was tall and fairly heavy for his age. Still…

“All right, let me see if I can get you to my shoulders.”

“I would not want you to hurt yourself. Perhaps it would be wise and logical to wait for Uncle Spock to join us.”

Jim rolled his eyes. “The parade will be over. The effigy of Captain Ashton is supposed to be on the next float.”

“Very well. But should you become injured in the melee, Uncle Spock must care for you.”

“There will be no melee.” He bent down, grabbed Vanik, and hoisted him up on his shoulders, wincing as he did so. Okay so yeah, the kid weighed more than a Human kid that was for sure. “Can you see?”

“Yes. You are quite correct. The likeness of Captain Ashton is extraordinary.”

“Good.” He grunted.

Vanik looked down. “You are in pain.”

“No,” Jim lied. “Watch the parade.”

Only a few minutes later, Spock appeared.

“Jim?”

“He couldn’t see. And you know, he’s studying J Ashton in school.”

Spock nodded and reached up, easily taking Vanik from Jim’s shoulders. Jim winced and moved his shoulders around.

“You should have waited,” Spock said quietly.

“He shouldn’t have to miss any of it. It’s okay.”

Much later they returned to the apartment building and took a pleasantly tired Vanik back to his parents.

“You missed the parade yourself,” Spock pointed out as he began to knead Jim’s sore shoulders as Jim rested on his stomach on their bed.

“It’ll stream after my massage.” He closed his eyes.

“You are remarkable.”

Jim laughed. “Nah, he loves the story of Captain Ashton. He’s been talking about the birthday parade for days. Sore shoulders are nothing. And that’s what I have you for.”

“Indeed.”

“And perhaps for a little bit more.”

“I thought you wanted to stream the birthday parade.”

Jim flopped over onto his back and held out his arms. Spock leaned down at kissed him. And yes, the streaming could definitely wait.

Five Plus One (and One)

It’s that time again, time for a 5 plus 1 story. And since I did a 5 times Jim told Spock he loved him and the one time Spock told Jim, well… I am sure you get the theme.

One

Spock hadn’t ever said I Love You to Nyota. He had managed to get by with things like “I hold you in the highest regard” and “I care about you” and even “You have my affections”.  Once he had said, “There is no one else I would rather be with”. That had been true at the time. Until it wasn’t true anymore. Yes, he still cared and still held her in high regard, but ultimately someone else held his affections and he did want to be with Jim, their captain.

Their breakup had been messier than Spock had wanted it to be. They’d ended things before Krall and Altamid, back when Spock had thought he was going to New Vulcan. And when he changed his mind, based on Jim’s needs—but no, based on his own needs—Nyota had misunderstood. He had gone to save her when she was in danger, because of his affection for her, and he had attended Jim’s birthday party to spend time with her, but also Jim, and she had thought it meant he wanted to continue their relationship.  When Spock explained the truth, well, the end had been messy. They were better now. All of them.

Spock had established a romantic relationship with Jim when Jim expressed a mutual interest. The sexual part had been beyond anything Spock could have imagined.

Two months into that relationship and spending almost every single night with Jim, either making love or just sleeping together, Spock had dared to whisper those three words for the first time in his life, “I love you.”

He had felt Jim’s smile against his bare arm and Jim had given him a hard squeeze.

And said, “Who do you think should be on tomorrow’s landing party?”

Spock had replied, dutifully, of course, and the moment passed.

I’m off for another adventure and won’t return until Sunday afternoon, so have some Vanik and Jim. One of my favorite combinations!

Jim felt weak, sweaty, and like he was probably going to barf again. He struggled to lift his head when he hear the sound of someone approaching his bed. Not an easy task because his head felt like it weighed eighty pounds.

“I have come to check on you again as promised.”

He eyed Vanik out of blood-shot eyeballs. “Did you check on me only ten minutes ago?”

“Negative. It was thirty minutes ago. I promised Uncle Spock that while he was away I would keep a very steady eye on you.”

“Yeah, okay, but how am I supposed to rest if you keep coming in to check on me every ten minutes?”

“Thirty.”

“Still.”

“Uncle Spock was called away and gave me task until he could return. He was given the task by your own friend, Leonard McCoy, the doctor.”

“I know, I know.”

“Doctor McCoy was required in Georgia for a family emergency. Neither the doctor nor Uncle Spock thought you should be left alone for long periods of time.”

“I have the flu not a fatal illness.”

“During the year of nineteen hundred eighteen on planet, Earth, it is estimated anywhere from seventeen million to fifty million died from influenza.” Vanik paused. “It is time to take your temperature. I have brought the one to scan your forehead.”

Jim sighed, sunk his head back down on the pillow and gave into the inevitable.

“Your fever had reduced a degree but is still alarming. I will check again thirty minutes from now. Do you require tea?”

“I’ll just barf it back up. When does Spock return?”

“His last message estimated nine o’clock this evening.”

“What time is it?”

“Two in the afternoon.”

Jim sighed again. “Okay see you again in thirty minutes.”

“You can count on it.”
