Spirk (with a small dose of Pinto)

Fan Fiction and Personal Ramblings

Here We Are Again

It’s that time of year again where I start contemplating my future in writing fanfic for Spirk. This past August I reached 12 years of writing and posting on AO3. That’s a long time.

I’ve seen a lot of readers come and go. A few have been reading maybe as long as I’ve been posting, but not many.

I’m left wondering if there’s anything left for me to write about AOS Spirk. I don’t know. I still have a few ideas in my brain ruminating but should I eventually write them or just conclude my “career” at the end of the current WIPS I have going.

I’ve seen the first season of Strange New Worlds and I don’t hate it, but not sure there’s anything for me to write about it for Spirk. They’ve done their best to heterosexualize Ethan Peck’s Spock to the point he even has a real relationship with T’Pring and even Christine Chapel. I’m not entirely crazy about Paul Wesley’s Kirk either. I don’t think he’s bad acting-wise but there’s an odd look to him that I can’t quite figure out that makes him not as cute as I’d like. Makes me shallow I guess but he’s no Chris Pine or William Shatner. Sometimes he looks okay but other times just weird. I never watched Vampire Diaries but I have seen scenes from it where he looked fairly normal so I’m not quite sure what it is about his Kirk that seems odd. Anyway, given that Spock’s leanings and my uncertainty about that Kirk, I don’t see me creating anything in that area.

Other than the occasional TOS fic, I don’t feel I can add much to that that others don’t already add.

So that’s where I’m at. Should I continue to create more AOS Spirk fics until I croak over (ha ha) or when the four WIPS I have going are done, do I give it up?

Thoughts?

Hard to believe only one week left after this for Academy month! Then we move on to October’s theme. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Here’s this week!

There really wasn’t any reason to stay any longer, and yet Jim knew he was lingering.

Professor Spock was resting in the hospital bed, though he was awake and had been conversing with Jim and members of the staff. He’d messaged someone Spock had asked him to so could come be with him.

He’d been assured Spock would be fine would likely be released in the morning.

And yet, he was reluctant to leave.

“Well, I guess, I should be—” He started to say for like the fourth time. But something always interrupted him. The last time, a nurse had brought Sprock a vegetarian soup for him to sip.

This time he was interrupted when the person Jim had messaged about Spock arrived.

Nyota Uhura.

Jim was well familiar with her. She’d been snooty from the moment he’d spoken to her at the bar in Riverside. He didn’t really feel like dealing with her fawning over Spock now.

And of course she ran right over to Spock and started fussing with him and the position he was in and his pillows.

Of course she had to be the one.

Jim grimaced. “Anyway, since your girlfriend’s here, I’m going to get going,” he said loudly.

They both stopped and then stared at Jim. He couldn’t tell if it was because they forgot he was even there or what.

Spock’s mouth hung open slightly. “Nyota is not my girlfriend.”

Jim was nonplused by this.

Spock seemed a bit dazed himself. “I thought…” He trailed off and oddly enough blushed.

Uhura cleared her throat. “I think I’m going to run to the cafeteria for some tea.” She leaned down to kiss Spock’s forehead. “I’ll be back.”

Jim watched her leave, admittedly confused. He wasn’t sure what just happened.

“Uh.” He knew he sounded lame.

Spock was still looking embarrassed. “I apologize, Jim. I assumed…”

Jim got closer. “Assumed what?”

Spock did not meet his gaze. “That you shared my interest. If I have misinterpreted—”

Jim’s eyes widened and he leaned over Spock to kiss him on the lips.

When he pulled back, Spock’s dark eyes were filled with warmth.

“I don’t know, maybe it’s me who hit my head,” Jim joked.

“Perhaps I was too subtle.”

Jim shook his head and then nodded. “Yeah, maybe you were. But I get it now.”

He kissed Spock again.

A throat cleared and Jim looked over to see Uhura smirking, holding a cup in her hand.

“Everything worked out now?” she asked.

Jim sat on the edge of Spock’s bed and grasped Spock’s hand in his. “Yep.”

She chuckled and came further into the room. “Now how exactly did you hit your head, Professor?”

Spock replied, “As it happens…”

This one is most definitely an AU, read on!

“Is this seat taken?”

It took a moment for Jim to realize that whoever asked that question must be speaking to him, because he felt someone hovering nearby. He looked up from concentrating on his PADD. And looked up again. The speaker was tall, thin, and Vulcan.

“What?”

“Is the seat next to you currently occupied?” the Vulcan spoke slowly, as though Jim were an idiot. Perhaps he was as he still just stared.

When the Vulcan continued to stare back, Jim finally replied, “No.”

With a slight nod, the Vulcan sat in the seat next to Jim at the table in the cafeteria. He’d brought with him what smelled like spiced tea and a plate that looked like it contained a raisin scone.

Jim allowed his gaze to wander around the cafeteria and noted that were several available tables that were entirely unoccupied. That the Vulcan chose to sit at his table was a puzzle. With a shrug, Jim went back to his PADD and absently took a sip of his coffee.

“Are you a first-year cadet?”

Jim found it to be an interesting question considering he was not wearing any kind of cadet’s uniform, but rather a t-shirt and jeans. Still he supposed considering he was in Starfleet Academy’s cafeteria the question made some sort of sense.

Jim did not recognize the Vulcan, which meant he did not attend the VSA on Vulcan. At least not currently anyway. He might be a past student. Judging by the Vulcan’s current attire, he was likely teaching courses at Starfleet Academy.

He thought about his knowledge related to a Vulcan who had enlisted in Starfleet.

Jim asked carefully, “Spock?”

“That is correct,” the Vulcan replied, unable to completely cover his surprise. Yes, this was the half-Human Vulcan. “You did not answer my question.”

Jim smiled. “I am not a first-year cadet, no.”

“How is it you are aware of my identity, mister…?”

“Kirk. James Kirk. I have heard of you,” he admitted. “Based on what I have heard, I figured you were Spock.”

“I see. You definitely have an advantage over me. What year of the Academy are you in, if I may ask.”

“You can ask.” Jim chuckled at the blank look on Spock’s face. Yep, he was well familiar with that look. “I am not a cadet at all, Spock.”

“Surely not a parent of a student.”

He outright laughed. “Nah. A little young for that. I’m teaching here this semester. Battle Tactics.”

Spok minutely frowned. Jim could tell he was trying to determine how best to politely ask Jim for his qualifications.

“Normally I teach on Vulcan,” he added, watching for Spock’s reaction.

“The planet Vulcan?’

“Do you know another?” Jim smiled.

“Where—”

“The Vulcan Science Academy.”

You teach at the Vulcan Science Academy?”

“Yep. Have for the past, er, two years. I was asked to teach Battle Tactics here, so I’ve taken a temporary leave from VSA. Feel free to check me out.”

Spock blinked, fired up his own PADD and a moment later said, “You are a quarter Vulcan.”

“I am, yes. Mom’s side. She was half Vulcan. Her mother. I suspect my students find me a bit too Human, but they seem to like me anyway.”

“Your grandmother.”

Jim nodded. “Yep. You probably have heard of her. She’s fairly famous. She assures me that her relationship with my Human grandfather was brief and a mistake, but she tolerates Mom and me anyway. And my brother.”

“Who is your grandmother?”

Jim watched Spock again for his reaction. “T’Pau.”

T’Pau?” Spock sounded outraged.

“Sort of blows your mind, huh?”

“I…there is no proof that any of that is true.”

Jim glanced down at his PADD, pressed a few buttons, and then handed that PADD to Spock, who studied it with a noticeable muscle twitch next to his eyebrows.

Jim leaned back. “But now that you mention it, I have been thinking of switching sides.”

Spock looked up, handed the PADD back to Jim. “Switching sides?”

“Joining Starfleet. They have a really cute Vulcan officer.”

Spock actually blushed.

Jim grinned. “Anyway, I’ve been wondering, Spock, why you wanted to sit here when there are plenty of tables available.”

Spock’s blush deepened. “I thought it was obvious. Given my interest, I can only assume that I somehow recognized your Vulcan heritage, which prompted me, logically, to attempt contact.”

Jim laughed. “Logically. Yes. I guess so.”

“What else would it be?”

“My cute ass.”

Spock cleared his throat. “Perhaps that too.”

PS. I kinda love the idea of this universe and think Jim/T’Pau interaction with her as his granny would be epic, but that’s me, LOL

So Anyway, It Will Happen…

If you’re wondering why I haven’t updated anything in a week or so. I’m a bit burned out at the moment. I know what comes next on which story but I can’t seem to make myself write it. On the other hand I have also been mulling over a one shot that takes place during and after Into Darkness that would pretty much ignore the Beyond stuff. I want to write that, really, before updating anything else and I can’t make myself sit down and do that either.

M is off for a relative’s wedding this weekend so maybe I will get to it, I don’t know. But that’s where I am at.

I’ve turned comments off as I really don’t think anyone will have anything they want to say! LOL

And Academy Month Begins

Someone slammed into Spock so hard it knocked him off his feet and to the ground just outside the biology building of Starfleet Academy.

“Oh crap. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m late!”

Spock, momentarily stunned, looked up at a wild-eyed sandy haired cadet with flushed skin staring down at him.

“Let me help you up.”

Spock shook himself. “There is no need, Cadet. I am capable of standing on my own. Since you are late, I suggest you continue to your class.”

“But-are you all right? Are you injured?”

“I am not. Go.”

After another second of hesitation, the cadet ran off.

Spock rose and quickly inspected his uniform, brushing off leaves and other debris. He was in time to see the cadet who knocked him down entering the classroom where Spock would be providing instruction that day.

Were Spock fully Human he would no doubt be somewhat amused by the coincidence. But because he favored his Vulcan side, he did not give amusement a chance to grow hold and instead made his way to the class.

The minute he stepped up to the podium and looked out over the cadets, Spock spoke, “I am Spock. I’ll be teaching this course for Professor Lawrence this semester.”

He ignored the few groans the Human cadets seemed unable to suppress. Spock understood. Natalie Lawrence was a popular instructor, but her difficult pregnancy had made it necessary to appoint a replacement.

He flicked his gaze out at the cadets sitting in their stadium-style classroom and immediately spotted the cadet who’d mowed him down scrunching down in his seat in an apparent attempt to go unnoticed. It was to no avail for that particular cadet was likely to stand out no matter how much he tried not to. He was very attractive with deep blue eyes. He was the sort of man who would ‘turn heads’ as his own mother would put it.

Spock had no intention of moving his head.

He cleared his throat and began his lecture.

Spock was not sure why he was surprised when shortly after he left the classroom that same cadet suddenly appeared, keeping pace with him as he walked.

“Hey, sorry about that. Professor.” The cadet glanced his way. “Commander. Sorry, Commander. It won’t happen again.”

“I should hope not.”

“Kirk.”

“I beg your pardon?”

The cadet smiled and for a moment, Spock felt dizzy.

“Kirk, James T. My name.”

“Ah. I believe I might have heard of you, Cadet Kirk.”

“Good things, I hope.”

“What I heard was neither positive nor negative. Neutral.’

“Oh. Well.” Kirk stopped abruptly.

And for some reason Spock found unfathomable, he too stopped.

“I don’t want to keep you from wherever your next destination is, I just wanted to apologize, find out if you were all right, and assure you it won’t be repeated.”

“I am unharmed,” Spock assured him. “But I do urge caution the next time you are rushing to a class. Not everyone will be as sturdy on their feet as I am.”

For some odd reason, Cadet Kirk smiled. It really was a very nice smile.

“Don’t worry about me,” Kirk replied.

“I am not, in fact, worried.”

Which drew out a hearty laugh from Kirk. And though Spock almost felt he should be affronted, like perhaps the cadet was having amusement at Spock’s expense, he found the laugh so appealing he could not be irritated.

Kirk thrust out his hand toward Spock and before Spock could rethink doing so, he took the offered hand to shake it.

And electric-like shocks crept from his palm and fingers where they touched Kirk all the way up his arm. And he felt an almost kick in his side where his heart lay. It was suddenly hard to maintain his composure and though he felt a tug on his hand by Kirk, who clearly wanted him to let go, Spock held fast.

“Are you all right, Commander?”

It seemed clear from the confusion on Cadet Kirk’s face he was completely unaware of what Spock had just discovered.

“Would you happen to be free for coffee or tea?” Spock asked.

“Uh. Now?”

“Preferably.”

Kirk nodded. “Okay. But I think I’m going to need that hand to lift my coffee cup.”

Spock released his hand then, reluctantly. Kirk smiled.

“After you,” Kirk said.

Spock began to walk and Kirk fell into place beside him. “I do not believe you will need to worry about being late for my course.”

“No? Why is that?”

“If I am correct, you will have to request a transfer.”

This seems a fitting precursor for Academy Month

“So, I guess this is it.”

She stood near, arms crossed defensively in front of her chest, looking like she was about to cry.

“I still can’t believe you let that Pike guy talk you into enlisting n Starfleet.” She sniffed.

He smiled. “It will be all right, Mom.”

She gestured to his beaten face. “Really? With assholes like that as cadets?”

“You are right. They are assholes but not everyone is. You and Dad were Starfleet once.”

“Yeah…well. You see how that worked out.”

“I wasn’t doing much around Riverside anyway. This might be just what I need to jumpstart my life.”

Her bottom lip quivered. “Not like I could stop you.”

His smile gentled. “You could, honestly, but I know you won’t.”

“Your first day of school,” she whispered, “I didn’t want you to go. For those first few years it was just you and me and Sam. After your daddy died, it was hard to get anyone to help me, you know? And I didn’t want to impose or ask for help most of the time. George’s parents had already passed on and my parents didn’t live anywhere near Riverside. They offered when you were first born but I wanted…I thought I had something to prove after everything. And I was so depressed.”

“I’m sorry.”

She nodded, swallowed. “I missed your daddy an awful lot. We were so excited during my second pregnancy. We decided to keep it a secret. The gender I mean. I sort of wanted a girl but George wanted another boy.” She laughed. “He got his wish. And anyway, you couldn’t have been more perfect. So in those first years, we got to be real close, the three of us. I managed to keep it together and not give into the depression because I had you boys to keep safe. Other than not having your daddy there, we had the best Christmases then. So much fun. But your first day of school? It was awful.”

“Didn’t you have to do that with Sammy?”

“I did but he was always…very much his own thing, you know? He didn’t want to be coddled or loved not the way you did. I think he struggled more with George’s death than I realized. He didn’t know him long but he managed to idolize George in the time he did know. Anyway, he wasn’t terribly affectionate or anything and I think he wouldn’t have appreciated me weeping like a fool over him.”

Jim was a little amused. “But I did?”

“You and I were very close. You were my sweet little mini me. I tried to go with the idea of home schooling you but by then everyone I knew, my parents too, said it would be a mistake. That you needed to get out and meet others and socialize with more than me and Sam. So I took you to school. You were fine. You said, ‘Bye Mommy’ and ran. You didn’t even look back, you just ran in there like you were about to conquer the world. And I cried and cried.”

“Ah, Mom.” Jim went and hugged her close. “You know I loved you. I love you always.”

“Yeah.” She clung to him. “I made a lot of mistakes, honey.”

“We all make mistakes.  It’s how we learn to grow as human beings afterward that defines us.”

She shook her head. “You’ve always been better than me.” She pulled out of his arms. “You’re going to be an amazing Starfleet officer, Jim. I don’t doubt that at all. But I’m going to miss you.”

“I’ll miss you too,” he assured her. “Walk me out to the bike?”

She wiped her eyes and said, “Sure.”

They walked outside arm in arm. It was early in the morning still. He hadn’t gotten a good night’s sleep, being sore all over from the fight.

He squeezed her hand and went over to his bike. He was about to get on when he turned around.

“See? I’m looking back this time.”

She laughed and cried at the same time, ran to him and hugged him tight. “Contact me when you get there.”

“I will. I promise.” He got on the bike, winked and then said, “Bye Mommy.”

Flash Fic, August 22, 2025

“Hi, Jim. You okay?”

Jim glanced at Bones who had come up beside him on the observation deck.

“Hey, what brings you here?”

“Been looking for a while. Finally gave up and asked the computer.” Bones sighed. “You left sickbay without authorization.”

“I’m fine.”

“Still.”

Jim grimaced. “It’s been a helluva day.”

“You mean three days.”

“It feels like one long ass day. I tried three times to tell Spock how I feel.”

“How’d that go?”

Jim laughed. “Not well. First one was when those Klingons attacked and we went to red alert.”

“Ah.”

“Then we got stuck in the turbolift so I decided to tell him then.”

“And?”

“Just as I was about to pour my heart out, the turbolift doors opened and there was Uhura and Sulu,”

“Uh-oh.”

“And then?”

“Nomad. Erasing Uhura’s memories and killing Scotty. Not really time to confess undying love, you know?”

“They’re both okay now,” Bones pointed out.

“Then I got thrown against the bulkhead and ended up in sickbay. I’m tired and sad and cranky,” Jim admitted. “I just feel like it’s not meant to be.”

Bones straightened. “I gotta go.”

“What?”

“I just remembered I have a patient waiting.”

“What the hell? Bones—”

And as he turned to watch Bones leave he spotted Spock standing nearby.

Oh shit.

Jim cleared his throat. “Hi.”

Spock didn’t say a word. He just opened his arms. Jim might be slow sometimes but this time…no.

He walked forward and stepped right into Spock’s arms. They wrapped tight around him and Jim sagged against the Vulcan.

“This feels good,” Jim murmured.

“It might feel even better in your quarters.”

Jim chuckled. “Yeah?”

“And when we are there you can tell me all about your undying love.”

“You heard that, huh?”

“Indeed.”

Jim didn’t pull away. He snuggled closer.

“What did you think about that?”

“I suspect you will soon find out.”

“Aren’t you coy?”

“Quarters?”

Jim sighed and buried himself in Spock’s arms even more. “In a bit, Spock. In a bit.”

Flash Fic August 15, 2025

This one almost applies to the November theme, but anyway….

“Are you sure I should be going with you, Spock?”

Jim had asked this of Spock twice before. Spock understood that Jim was likely nervous at the prospect of meeting Spock’s father so he allowed allowances for those nerves.

They were already preparing to step onto the transporter pad when Jim asked this latest time.

“I wish for him to know my mate, Jim,” Spock said, simply, also for the third time.

“Yeah. Well. About that.”

Spock arched a brow.

“Are you absolutely sure—”

“Yes,” Spock interrupted, not allowing him to finish.

Jim blew out a breath, then reached for Spock to give him a quick kiss.

“On Vulcan, that will not…”

“Yeah. I know. No open affection. I know, I know.”

Spock knew Jim was irritated by the reminder, but there wasn’t time to apologize or explain his own apprehension before they were told the transport was ready.

Unbeknownst to Jim, Spock had yet to tell Sarek that Jim was his mate. This brief trip to New Vulcan was to accomplish that.

“Energize,” Jim called to the transporter technician.

On New Vulcan, they were greeted by Vulcan attendants, before making their way to a tram that would take them to the neighborhood where his father’s house was located in mere seconds.

Jim had fallen silent. His color was already high from the heat, though New Vulcan did not have quite the same temperatures as Vulcan Prime had.

His uneasiness was affecting Spock as they approached the door to Sarek’s home. He’d been advised by his father that he could simply use his own code to enter the house in case Sarek was otherwise occupied when Spock arrived. Spock did so.

The inside of the house was mildly cooler and he could see the quick relief in Jim’s gaze.

Sarek came from within the deeper part of the house at that moment.

“Ah, Spock, you have…” His gaze flicked to Jim. “Captain Kirk.”

“Ambassador.”

Sarek looked to Spock, his expression carefully blank. “I was unaware you were bringing your superior officer, Spock. I thought this was a personal family visit.”

Spock could feel Jim’s shock through their link and he struggled not to shrink in on what was clearly a rebuke from his father.

He doesn’t even know?

“Father—”

“Excuse me,” Jim spoke up. “I’ll be outside.”

“Jim…”

But Jim practically ran from Sarek’s house.

“Explain,” Sarek demanded. “Why have you brought your superior here?”

Spock clenched his jaw. “Because I came here to introduce you to my mate.”

“Your…”

“Yes. Jim is my bondmate.”

“Why was I not made aware of this? To choose a bondmate who is both Human and male while our species is in danger of extinction is illogical and clearly made with emotional considerations that should not—”

“Kroykah!”

Sarek blinked.

“We are T’hy’la. It is not a simple choice.”

“I…see. No Vulcan has had such a bond for many hundreds of years.”

“Since I am only half Vulcan, that record still applies,” Spock said, stiffly. “I must seek out Jim.”

Spock turned away from his father but paused at the door. “If we were not T’hy’la, I would still choose Jim.”

Once outside, Spock did not see Jim. He feared Jim had gone back to the Enterprise.

“Jim? Jim? T’hy’la?”

“Here, Spock.” Jim appeared from around the back of the house. He looked red and overheated.

“We must get you to some place cooler,” Spock said quickly. “I apologize for my father’s unkindness.”

“I can apologize for my own failings, Spock,” Sarek said from the porch of the house. “Captain Kirk. Jim. Please accept my apology for my rudeness. It was illogical to act that way and I can only admit to being a somewhat foolish old man. Will you come into my home where I assure you, you are most welcome.”

Jim looked to Spock.

I am sorry, Jim. I should have told my father we were bonded before we arrived.

You were nervous too.

Yes.

It’s all right, Spock. I get it. This is all…strange to you, too.

Jim looked back to Sarek. “I accept your welcome, Ambassador.”

Sarek stood aside while Spock and Jim reentered the house.

“Call me Sarek, Jim. And let me prepare a meal of welcome to honor my son and his bondmate.”

Jim smiled. “Great. Thank you. Sarek.”

Sarek nodded. “Even old dogs can be taught new tricks.” He paused. “I got that from my wife.”

And Jim burst out laughing.

Sarek turned to Spock. “Sometimes I foolishly forget her, only for a moment, of course, as I have done just now. She would feel shame for me. I believe she would say if she were here, Spock, ‘you will always have a proud mother’. And you will always have a proud father, also. Come, let us settle and become acquainted as a family.”

Time to Help Me Plan

It’s time to vote or express your opinions anyway

Yes it’s only August, sort of mid-August at that but there’s only 3 more August flashes, so I am thinking ahead.

For September I think I’ll do Starfleet Academy flashes (and is anyone besides me excited for the Starfleet Academy show that’s supposed to be coming in 2026?).

But before you know it October, November and December will be here.

For October, I like to do spookyish flashes (or Halloween themedish) flashes, nothing horribly scary, I promise. Is there anything in particular you’d like to see for this month?

For November, I want to do family gathering stuff, Kirks, Spock’s family, whatever, something along those lines, so again if there is anything you want to see let me know

For December, do you want each Friday to be a standalone holiday flash or do you want each Friday to be a part of a continuing story for the month.

For all three months do you want angst, light angst, no angst

Please don’t say “I’m good with anything” LOL. While I appreciate that, it’s not that helpful in planning.

Thank you for anyone who gives me their opinion!
