Jim pulled back from Spock, shining.

“Then I can assume I had not miscalculated.”

Jim shrugged. “Well my granny had a saying about assuming—”

Jim.”

He laughed breathlessly and found himself feeling a little manic with joy. He put his hands on Spock’s forearms.

“We’re in a way too public place. Why don’t we find a more clandestine place to be?”

“Clandestine,” Spock repeated.

“It’s a great word.” He felt almost drunk, though he’d had nothing at all to drink.

“I’d prefer privacy, yes,” Spock said, rather primly.

Jim grabbed Spock’s hand and led him away from the bridge and the water feature. He couldn’t help but think it was pretty lucky their apartment building wasn’t all that far away.

They reached the building in no time and only had to ride the glass lift that was situated on the outside of building to allow for spectacular views of the station with two or three others. Jim made sure to stand close to Spock so no one could stick themselves between them where they’d clearly not be wanted. Spock stared straight ahead.

Unfortunately, one of the riders recognized Jim and decided to strike up a conversation.

“Captain Kirk, it’s nice to see you, sir.” At Jim’s blank look the female officer straightened. “I work for Commodore Paris.”

“Oh.” Jim nodded and smiled politely. “Ensign Martin.”

Her countenance brightened. “Yes that’s right. Elaine Martin. Perhaps you’d like to join me for drinks in the lobby in about an hour?” There was hope in her voice.

Jim glanced briefly at Spock who was clearly pretending not to pay any attention.

“Unfortunately, I won’t be able to. Commander Spock and I have a very important meeting to attend that’s going to take up the rest of the evening.” The lift door opened. “And this is our floor. Have a nice night.”

And Jim dragged Spock out with them as the door closed in Ensign Martin’s disappointed face.

Spock arched a brow. “You are popular as ever.”

Jim merely snorted in response, stopped at his apartment door, scanned for entry, and barely kicked the door closed before he jumped on Spock and started kissing him.

“How did you find me?”

Spock was somewhat hesitant to answer Jim’s question.

He’d come across Jim that night standing alone by a water function near one of the bridge’s on Yorktown. He’d appeared pensive.

Spock didn’t want to lie. Or even attempt to avoid lying by deflecting the question.

“I have been monitoring your life signs.”

Jim turned away from leaning over the railing to eye Spock. “You have? Since when?”

“The night you were mugged. I put a tracking device on your communicator that allowed me to track your vitals.”

“Sounds almost like you are stalking me.”

“Captain—”

Jim waved that away. “I’m only half-kidding. I know you’re not really a stalker. But why such precautions? We’re on Yorktown. Don’t you think I’m pretty safe here.”

Spock arched a brow. “May I remind you that you were mugged.”

He laughed at that. “Well, yeah. Can’t argue with that.”

Spock moved to stand beside Jim and searched the area to see what prompted Jim to come there.

“Were you meeting someone here?”

Jim smiled and shook his head. “Did you need me for ship’s business?”

“No.”

“Then?”

This was where it could get uncomfortable.

“I wished to spend time with you,” Spock admitted, carefully.

“Me?” Jim’s look was quizzical. As though he couldn’t imagine in a million years what Spock was talking about.

“Yes…I…I’m really not sure how to explain.”

“Try me.”

“Part of the reason my relationship ended with Nyota is because I had an interest of a romantic nature in someone else.” Spock paused. “I believe I did mention it.”

The captain frowned and leaned back against the railing. “Did you? I must have missed that.”

“Apparently. And now perhaps it should occur to me you missed it deliberately.”

“Meaning?”

“I had hoped there was a shared interest between us but if I have miscalculated—”

Spock found himself shutting up due to Jim’s mouth suddenly on his.

He found he did not mind.

Flash Fic, August 16, 2023

Spock was a little surprised when Doctor McCoy had shown up at his apartment door along with the captain, though he supposed he shouldn’t be. In the years they’d all been acquainted, McCoy was usually around when Jim was.

In the early days, Spock had a hypothesis that they were more than friends, or at least the doctor had wanted to be, but that was early on and Spock no longer believed there was anything between them but a brotherly bond.

Still Jim hadn’t mentioned inviting McCoy to breakfast the night before when Spock had been tending to Jim’s wounds.

Although that had been unexpected and rather mildly annoying, what was more alarming was the cool look Jim had given them as Spock stepped out of his apartment to join them for breakfast.

“Morning,” Jim said, without any trace of warmth.

In the beginning of their contentious relationship, Spock had been somewhat used to cool looks from his captain. He’d found Jim rather moody.

But as they became friends, he got many more smiles and laughter.

Until right before Krall, that was. Something had changed between them then and Spock never really knew what it was.

It was then he had made the decision to leave for New Vulcan.

All that had changed again though and he was staying. Things had begun to look up for them again, including as recently as last night, and yet this morning cold Jim was back.

“Where are we going for breakfast?” Spock made himself ask. He had very little appetite now.

“The Yorktown base cafeteria works for me, if does you two.” Jim eyed him. “It’s got plenty of vegetarian choices.”

Since they were hardly going to have a private table for two now with McCoy along where they ate really didn’t matter so Spock agreed.

Since it was cafeteria, it was serve yourself, and when Spock had selected oatmeal with raisins, he made his way to a table where Jim had already sat himself.

The captain had a cup of coffee and a cinnamon streusel muffin.

“Is that all your are going to eat?”

Jim nodded. “All I feel like this morning.”

“Are you suffering any ill effects from last night?”

“Nah, I’ve been beaten worse. By your girlfriend’s thug defenders for instance.” Jim smiled at him this time but there was hard steel behind it.

McCoy chose that moment to slam his tray of food down before plopping down in a chair. “I’m pretty sure these scrambled eggs have been under a heat lamp for three days.”

Jim snorted and took a sip of his coffee.

McCoy looked at Spock. “You and Uhura reconcile again?”

Spock frowned and shook his head. “Negative. My romantic relationship with Nyota will not continue. Why do you ask?”

“She was there this morning in your apartment.” McCoy shrugged.

“For ship business concerning the roster of the Enterprise when we depart Yorktown.” Spock glanced at the captain. “There have been some that have chosen not to continue.”

Jim nodded, but Spock could not help but notice Jim’s eyes appeared suddenly warmer. “I figured that. Altamid was pretty traumatic for a lot of the crew.”

“Yes,” Spock agreed, then turned back to McCoy. “Not only do Nyota and I still serve under the captain onboard the Enterprise, but we also remain on good terms.”

McCoy smirked. “Good to know. Isn’t it, Jim?”

Jim shook his head but he smiled. “Speaking of ship’s business, we really need to get together with Scotty and discuss—”

Flash Fic, August 08, 2023

And we still continue…

It was hard to be quiet and not make a spectacle of yourself when you can even stand upright, Jim reflected as he slumped against the wall directly next to his apartment door.

A temporary apartment Jim hoped he’d be able to abandon in the six months they’d claimed it would take for them to rebuild the Enterprise on Yorktown. It was an all right place, Yorktown, but he was glad now he wouldn’t be staying there.

The door to an apartment opened suddenly down the hallway and Jim knew who it would be even before he heard the exclamation, “Captain!”

A moment later, strong Vulcan arms were propping him upright.

Jim managed a grimacing smile through his cracked lip and bloody teeth. “Hiya, Spock.”

“You are injured! What has happened?” Spock’s nostrils flared. “Orion pheromones.”

“Yeah, sorta. Can you help me inside?”

Spock didn’t hesitate, of course, and a moment later the door was opened and Jim was deposited on the couch while Spock went to fetch a first aid kit.

And then Spock was knelt down in front of Jim, using a wet cloth to gently wipe the blood from around Jim’s mouth.

“You were assaulted?”

Jim nodded.

“Did you summon the authorities?”

“No. She was long gone.”

“She,” Spock repeated with inflection.

“An Orion female I spotted at the bar. She reminded me of Gaila. You remember her?”

“Yes.”

Jim shook his head. “I guess I’m out of practice.”

“I do not understand.”

“For one-night stands. That was my intention, but hers was to rob me.”

“She inflicted this damage?”

“Nah, her co-conspirator.” Jim winced as Spock made him open his mouth for him to swab some of the blood. “Gross. Give me a moment to rinse, will you?”

Spock produced a bowl and an antiseptic mouth wash. “Already thought of that.”

Jim almost protested and said he’d go into the bathroom, but it wasn’t like he had a ton of dignity here at this point. He took the mouthwash, took a big gulp, swished it around and then spit it into the bowl. The blue mouthwash was tinged with pink from the blood.

“Did you lose a tooth?” Spock asked, setting the bowl aside.

“No, thankfully. He punched me a few times, they grabbed my credits and ran off. I stumbled here and you know the rest.”

“You should have reported the crime.”

“Maybe, but I’m pretty embarrassed. I’m off my game, that’s for sure.” He sighed. “And a little woozy from the pheromones.”

“You are fortunate she did not take you to some location where after she had her way with you she and her cohort murdered you.”

“It was just a petty crime, Spock.”

Spock nodded. “As I said, you are fortunate. I suggest you now get out of those clothes and into a shower. Then bed to sleep it off.”

Jim smiled faintly. “That’s exactly my intention.” He rose from the couch and swayed a bit.

“Do you need assistance?” Spock asked after steadying him.

“Nah, I got this. The worst of it’s over.” Jim searched his eyes. “I saw Uhura at the bar with a friend.”

“I see.”

“Does that bother you? I mean, I don’t know if it was a date or anything, but…it might bother you.”

“I have made peace with the end of the relationship, Jim. As I indicated before I am not suffering from heartache.”

“Okay. Good. Thanks for the help, Spock. See you tomorrow? Maybe we can have breakfast.”

“I am amenable. Goodnight, Captain.”

“Night.”

We continue

“Captain! I didn’t expect to see you here,” Uhura exclaimed when Jim stopped at a booth at Lorenzo’s Bar on Yorktown. With her was another female lieutenant, Lindy Warren, Jim recalled.

“I didn’t mean to interrupt anything.”

“You aren’t,” Uhura assured him. “Join us.”

“Actually, if you’ll excuse me,” Warren said, sliding out of the booth. “I’m going to get us some more drinks.”

“Don’t leave on my account,” Jim said.

“I’m not. Getting drinks. What would you like, Captain?”

“Just a pilsner beer for me, thanks.” He sat next to Uhura as Warren slipped away. “How are you?”

Uhura snorted. “You must have talked to Spock.”

“A little.”

“Well, I’m fine. Nobody likes to end a long-term relationship, but I’ll survive.” She reached over and patted Jim’s hand. “Spock and I will remain friends.”

Jim nodded. “He said pretty much the same thing. Close friends?”

She shrugged. “It might take a while, but we’ll get there. We started out as friends originally.”

“I thought…well, never mind.”

“What?”

“You looked like you wanted to reconcile with him. But it’s none of my business.”

“You’re right, it’s not,” she said, coolly. Then she gave another little shrug. “But I did. I thought we would. With Spock deciding not to go to New Vulcan and coming to find me, I thought that’s where Spock and I were headed. But Spock had other plans.”

Jim knew not to ask more questions. Spock had said it was a mutual decision but it sure didn’t sound like it from Uhura’s point of view.

“Okay, well. I hope I’m not going to find your transfer request.”

“Not a chance. No ex-romantic relationship is going to interfere with my career.”

Jim smiled. “Good. I’m surprised Spock is staying.”

She had just taken a sip of her very green cocktail. She puckered her lips and then shook her head. “Why are you surprised?”

“Well. I don’t know. If he wasn’t staying to continue your relationship, I guess I just wonder what’s keeping him here. I’m glad of course.”

Uhura surprised him by laughing. “Guess he hasn’t told you everything.”

“Hmm?”

“Nope, not going there. You want to know more, you’ll have to ask Spock. I shouldn’t be surprised.”

“Surprised by what?” Jim asked, confused.

She shook her head. “As I said, ask Spock. It’s not my place to say and I don’t want to anyway.”

Lieutenant Warren arrived with their drinks then, putting another green cocktail in front of Uhura and handing the beer to Jim.

“I’ll be back with mine,” she said.

Jim smiled and got up. “I’m actually going to take this and get out of here. No one wants their captain cramping their style. See you later and enjoy your night.”

Jim took his beer and was about to exit Lorenzo’s when an Orion female sitting at the bar caught his eye. She gave him a saucy look. She reminded him of Gaila, who of course was long dead now having been murdered by Nero.

He decided not to leave the bar after all, thinking at least for the night, he wouldn’t be alone.

If I were writing the next part after Beyond’s conclusion…

Very much pre/slash

“Oops! Sorry, Spock. Didn’t realize anyone was out here.” Jim paused with his hand on the door handle of an outside patio area of the conference room where his birthday party was even now taking place.

Spock turned away from observing a rather bizarre looking flowering shrub to face Jim. “There is no need for you to depart, Captain.”

Jim let go of the door and allowed it to close once more. He approached Spock. “Jim. We’re not on duty and it’s my birthday, so I insist.” He smiled.

“Jim. You have left your own party?”

“I needed some air,” he admitted. “The whole thing was getting…overwhelming.”

Spock inclined his head. “It’s not like you to be overwhelmed by a party.”

“Well…it’s been a long few days.” He searched Spock’s face. “And you? How’s the recovery going?”

“It is progressing at its expected pace.”

Jim laughed. “I see. What are you doing out here?”

“I, too, needed some air.”

“Hmm. Alone? I saw you and Uhura inside together. Looked like you guys were reconciling.”

Spock looked away and back to the shrubs. “Nyota and I will always remain close but our romantic relationship will not resume.”

“Oh.” Jim nodded. “That’s surprising. Why?” He held up his hands and shook his head. “You know what? That’s so not my business. Sorry.”

“You are my friend, are you not?”

“I’d like to think so.”

“Then it is permissible under this context.” Spock gave a little sigh. “Our romantic relationship was an old and comfortable one, but it has run its course. The passion we once experienced is no longer there and our interests have strayed to others.”

Jim shrugged. “It’s common in long term relationships to lose a little bit of the initial fiery passion, Spock. I just…she seemed to really appreciate that you wanted to rescue her.”

“I am aware. But there is more to it.”

“Okay. Well, I’m sorry. I know you two cared a great deal about each other.”

“And still do.”

“Then it was her decision?”

Spock shook his head. “Mutual. You misunderstand, Jim, I am not suffering from what Humans would call a broken heart over the end of my relationship with Nyota.”

“I’m glad of that. I wouldn’t want you requesting a transfer.” He smiled to indicate he was mostly teasing.

Spock suddenly looked even more uncomfortable than he already did. “I…there was a time when I considered resigning from Starfleet.”

Jim half-smiled. “I know.”

“I am not referring to the time directly after Nero when Vulcans were looking for a new planet.”

“I know that, too. You wanted to leave recently.”

Spock gaped at him in surprise. “I was not aware you knew.”

“Some members of my crew think as captain I should know that sort of information.”

“McCoy,” Spock guessed.

“Yeah,” Jim admitted. “You could have talked to me. But in all honesty I had plans of my own. They seem stupid now.”

“Plans?”

“The best laid as they say. Anyway, they didn’t work out and I’m staying in command of the Enterprise when she’s ready. I’d like to think you’ll be by my side as my first, Spock.”

“I intend to be,” Spock said, seriously. “I no longer think of leaving.”

“Great.” Jim sighed and glanced back toward the building. “I guess I need to get back to the party. You coming?”

Spock nodded and fell into step beside him as they reentered the building together.

Flash Fic, July 31, 2023

And so we come to another conclusion of Christmas in July. It definitely had its up and downs (and a promise of a full-blown fic related to amnesiac Jim who Spock finds friendless and alone in the hospital) but all things must pass. Here you go.

Jim wiped his mouth as he threw up for the fourth time. He looked pale and miserable.

“Daddy’s sick,” Amanda whispered to Spock. In each hand she clutched her stuffed reindeers she’d received earlier in the year, Martin and Cornelius.

“Yes,” Spock replied. He had his suspicions.

Spock had just hung the family stockings over the hearth. Christmas Eve was tomorrow and naturally, according to Amanda, their stockings needed to be ready for Santa when he came.

Jim came fully out of the bathroom where Spock and Amanda hovered anxiously. He smiled weakly.

“I sure hope that’s it.”

“Why don’t you sit on the couch, Jim, while Amanda and I continue getting the house ready for Santa tomorrow.”

Jim nodded. “Good idea.” He walked stiffly into the living room and lowered himself down to the couch. “That is better. Sorry about that. I don’t know what’s wrong. Must have been something I ate.”

Amanda went over to sit next to him. “Not the cookies I helped Father make.”

“No, of course not those. They were delicious.”

“Amanda, will you put your reindeers in their pen for now as we will be doing more baking soon,” Spock told her. “Wash your hands too.”

“Okay!” She scrambled up and ran toward her room.

Spock took the seat directly next to Jim and reached for his hand.

“I’m fine, Spock. Like I said, probably just—”

“Jim, I suspect you might be expecting another child,” Spock said quickly.

Jim closed his mouth. “What? No.”

Spock arched a brow.

“No,” Jim insisted.”

“It is quite possible. Still. As you are aware.”

“I know but…” Jim huffed.

“I suggest it is time to book an appointment with the doctor.”

Jim made a face. “It’s Christmas.”

Spock’s lips curved. “I mean after of course. Would having a brother or sister for Amanda be so bad?”

“You’re not the guy who’s pregnant,” Jim said, as he had the first time. “If I am.”

“If. You may sit there and rest while we bake the Christmas cake.”

Jim leaned back and closed his eyes. “I might take a nap.” “Probably for the best.” He leaned over, kissed Jim’s cheek, and rose to get the kitchen ready for his daughter.

Flash Fic, July 28, 2023

Jim held up the sonogram for Spock to see. “There you are. Proof positive.”

Spock let out a long breath. “What do you intend to do?”

He shook his head. “I’ll have to talk to Komack.”

“Komack?” The doctor standing near them repeated. “Is that the father?

Jim and Spock turned as one to stare at the doctor.

“What? Komack? Admiral Komack?”

The doctor shrugged.

Jim snorted. “Definitely not Komack. I mean there was that one time, but that was a long time ago—”

“Jim.”

He cleared his throat. “Sorry.” He glared at the doctor. “Spock’s the father. Or actually I am. I’m nobody’s mother.”

This time the doctor smirked. “If you say so. By my calculations she’s going to be born right around the end of July. Christmas in July. Quite the present.” The doctor chortled and seemed to ignore the side-eye look Jim aimed his way.

“She?” Spock repeated. “Then the infant will be a girl?”

“She’s already a girl, yes. You’re four months along, Captain. You can finish up here and meet my nurse outside for instructions and to make your next appointment.” He eyed them both. “Congratulations.”

After the doctor left, Jim grimaced. “There goes my Starfleet career.”

“You may be able to work at HQ. But likely your starship career will be impacted.” Spock paused. “As will mine. You won’t be doing this alone, Jim.”

“I knew when that alien fucked with me all those years ago something like this would be the result.”

“All will be well,” Spock promised.

“You aren’t the guy who’s pregnant.” Jim sighed and pulled his shirt on and rose from the examination bed. “A Christmas in July baby? What’s that about?’

“I have no idea.”

“Does that mean we gotta name her Holly?”

Spock’s lips twitched. “I would not object if we named her Amanda.”

Jim’s frown slipped away and he smiled. “After your mama.”

“Indeed.”

“Then that’s definitely her name.” Jim kissed Spock. “Amanda, our little girl. Come on. Let’s get out of here.”

Flash Fic, July 26, 2023

A conclusion

Jim woke to the smell of coffee and pancakes. Pumpkin pancakes, it seemed. His favorite.

He turned to face Spock, but the bed was empty.

So he wasn’t dreaming of someone making him breakfast.

For a moment, his gaze stayed on the new titanium ring on his left hand. The Vulcan inscription read One and Together.

Both his and Spock’s hand the same inscription, of course. And that had been Spock’s doing way back when.

The wedding had been spur of the moment, really, on a very brief mandated appearance at HQ. And yet even with just a few hours notice, Spock had managed to get a couple of inexpensive rings engraved.

The best laid plans, Jim mused as his gaze went to the ornament box he’d bought to present their new rings to Spock.

He rose from their bed, washed up in the bathroom, and went downstairs to the lower half of their townhome.

Sure enough, Spock had turned on the lights on the Christmas tree and placed a cup of coffee and pumpkin pancakes in Jim’s place at the dining room table.

“Good morning,” Jim said, as he took his seat. “Looks good.”

“Made from scratch,” Spock replied. “Merry Christmas.”

“Sit down with me.”

Spock carried a plate of pancakes to the table and sat in his usual seat.

Jim reached for his hand and Spock placed his hand in Jim’s.

“It’s okay,” he said softly.

“It is not okay that I hurt and disappointed you.”

“We’ve always known about our duty interfering with our personal lives.”

Spock frowned. “Maybe it’s time we reevaluate.”

Jim laughed softly. “Like what? Retire?”

“Would that be so bad?” Spock asked. “I should have let you know the meeting was off the rails.”

He laughed again. “Man, are you being influenced by me.”

“It was. I could get no one to shut up. And I admit I did not notice how late it really was.” Spock shook his head. “And those sound like many excuses and in reality I have none.”

“I wouldn’t say that. It’s not like you could stand up and say, hey, my husband is waiting for me.”

“I could have. I should have. You were upset.”

“I was, yeah. But I’ve had time to think about it. I’m not saying I don’t wish things worked out the way I planned last night. But there’ve been plenty of times I was late because of some stupid Starfleet or Federation thing. And in the end, there’s no one else I’d rather be stood up by then you.”

Spock looked confused and then shook his head. “That is illogical.”

Jim smiled. “So’s that slightly longer canine tooth on your left side of your mouth.”

Spock arched a brow.

“It’s cute. It’s always been cute. My point is, I don’t want to be with anyone but you, even if sometimes I still want to tear the bangs right off your forehead. I love you, warts and all.”

“There are some that say I am unworthy of you,” Spock whispered.

“Right back at ya.” Jim squeezed his hand. “We decided long ago we didn’t care what anyone said about us.”

“I know. But I still apologize. I am sorry I ruined Christmas Eve and I will endeavor to do better. And the new rings are appreciated.”

“Inscription and all.”

“Indeed. And when you are finished with breakfast, I would like to go for a walk.”

“Okay, sure.”

“What’s this?” Jim asked when Spock brought Jim back to the park and a live tree decorated with Christmas lights.

Spock took both of Jim’s hands in his.

“Will you marry me…again?”

Jim laughed, moved close to kiss him. “You bet I will. And I promise not to be late.”
