“Hey, thanks for holding the door,” Jim said, as he dragged in the chair to the dorm room he’d be temporarily occupying. “This is kind of heavy.”

The very hot Vulcan stood aside wearing what Jim would consider his “puzzled by a Human” look. He was tall and thin with very dark hair and eyes to match. Jim didn’t know how he was going to feel living with a guy that sexy.

“You brought furniture?”

He had a sexy voice too.

“Yeah. Well, just the chair.” He set it down just inside the door and wiped his brow with his forearm. “Damn it’s warm in here.”

“I keep it set to a degree comfortable for Vulcans,” Spock said. “I will adjust it. Cadet, I do not understand why you would bring furniture with you to my residence when your stay is quite temporary.”

“Jim.”

“What?”

“My name. You can call me Jim. Anyway, I get it I do. But my mom insisted on sending it to me. I mean obviously she thought it would go into my dorm and didn’t know I wouldn’t have one. It’s a Kirk chair.”

“A what?”

“It’s my favorite chair back home. I mean we all have our favorite chairs, right?”

Spock’s brows furrowed.

“We do in my family anyway. My brother used to have one but he spilled all this stuff all over it and stained it and then he wouldn’t sit on it anymore.”

“Cadet—”

“I’m babbling, aren’t I?”

“Yes.”

Jim nodded. “I tend to talk a lot. Anyway, when my mom found out I was enlisting she wanted me to have my favorite chair so I’d get a bit of the home feel, you know?”

“Likely she should have waited until you were settled before sending it.”

“Yep. But you can’t really say no to Mom. I can’t anyway.” He smiled. “Which room am I in?”

Spock turned and indicated the one on the left.

“Cool. Hey, so why did you get a double if you weren’t going to have a roommate anyway? I mean before me.”

“I use the extra room for meditation.”

“Ah, gotcha. I’ll just, uh, move this into that room and then grab my bag of other stuff.”

“I will move the chair, you may collect the remainder of your belongings.”

Spock moved over to the large chair to pick it up.

“I don’t want you to have to go to any trouble,” Jim protested.

“It is no more trouble than anything else,” Spock said, vaguely. He picked up Jim’s Kirk chair like it weighed nothing at all and quickly headed for the room he had designated as Jim’s.

With a shrug, Jim went to grab his duffle bag he’d left just outside the door and then shut it behind him when he reentered the dorm.

He followed Spock into the room that was meant for him. He sniffed as he looked around. Spock had placed his chair on the far side of a single bed.

“What?” Spock asked.

“You used incense in here, huh?”

“Yes, I use it for my meditation. It is a Vulcan incense.” He paused. “Is that a problem?”

“Nah. I mean, I just have a few allergies. No big deal.” He smiled.

Spock stared at him. “Would you like to switch rooms?”

“Oh no. I mean your clothes are already there, right? And you’ve already stayed there. Isn’t this your last year?”

“Clothes can be moved.”

“I don’t want to be any trouble.” Jim coughed. His nose twitched.

Spock arched a brow. Jim was pretty sure Spock was about to announce how much trouble Jim already was, but to his surprise, Spock did not.

“We will switch rooms.”

Flash Fic, September 04, 2023

And….

For the remainder of September, like August, I am sticking with one continual story…. Starfleet Academy.

“Damn.”

“What’s wrong, Jim?”

Jim’s newly obtained friend, Leonard McCoy, asked as he walked over to the check-in table where Jim stood.

“They don’t have my single dorm room,” Jim explained. “The guy on the shuttle said I was all set, but they don’t have it. And most of the doubles are taken up too.”

“What are they going to do about it?”

Jim shrugged. “I guess they’re looking for someone who can take me temporarily in a double until they can get me a single.”

“Well.” McCoy frowned. “I have a single myself. We can maybe put a cot in it until they figure it out.”

“Thanks but—”

“Mr. Kirk, we’ve found someone willing to share their double with you temporarily,” the woman at the table announced.

Relieved, Jim turned around to face her. “Yeah? Great.”

“Understand you might have to room with this person for up to a month,” she explained. “There are separate sleeping rooms but the kitchenette and bathroom are shared.”

Jim nodded. “Okay by me. I can put up with anything if it’s temporary. Does the guy who is willing to share know it could be as long as a month?”

“Yes, he is aware. He’s in his last year of the Academy and spends much of his time as a part time instructor to earn extra credit.” She peered at him. “Are you Xenophobic?”

“Huh?”

“The person with the dorm is Vulcan. His name is Spock.”

“All right, that’s fine. And no, I’m not.”

She handed him a folder. “These are your class assignments as well as the location of the double dorm assigned to you. The key is there too. We’ll be in touch, Cadet. Good luck.”

Jim turned away and joined Leonard McCoy where he stood.

“Guess he’s a Vulcan and an instructor. Part time anyway.”

“So I heard. That could cramp your style.”

“It’s only for a month at the most. What could happen?”

September 01, 2023

And so we begin our Starfleet Academy Month

This first one was suggested and it’s not completely Academy but Academy related, so I figured, it might as well be the first one. Once again I am not sure I did it justice. But I tried!

“Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine.”

“What?” Uhura gave Jim a funny look.

Granted after pretty much knowing her for the last five years, Jim had been on the receiving end of a lot of funny looks from her.

Beginning from that first meeting in this very bar in Riverside.

Five years flew by, honestly.

Jim thought since they were in Riverside anyway he might as well go to one of his old favorite hangouts.

They were on Earth, briefly, to pick up Jaylah after she had successfully completed Academic training. That was in San Francisco, of course. Her graduation ceremony was in two days. But since they were here, Jim had decided a quick trip to see his mother might be warranted.

So here they all were. Well some of them anyway.

He’d been surprised when Uhura wanted to come there to the bar with him. Not all of that had been good memories, after all.

He’d told Spock of his intention, of course, but as usual his Vulcan boyfriend had decided not to come along to the bar. He’d stayed behind at the Kirk farmhouse where they were staying before heading out on the shuttle in the morning to San Francisco.

Jim had bellied up to the bar next to Uhura to order a drink when he’d made the quote from Casablanca.

“Old Earth movie,” he told her.

She shrugged and got the bartender’s attention. “I’d like a Klavnian fire tea, three Budweiser classics, two Cardasians sunrises, and uh…”

The bartender said, “Try the Slusho, it’s good.”

Jim blinked. Déjà vu.

“The slusho mix, thank you.”

Jim tried to remember his words from five years ago. “Uh. That’s a lot of drinks for one woman.”

“And a shot of Jack, straight up.”

“Make that two. Shots are on me.”

“Her shot’s on her.” Uhura smirked. “Thanks, but no thanks.”

“Why are we…?”

“I’m fine without your name.”

“Lieutenant—”

“Don’t you remember what you said?”

Jim snorted. “I remember. And I get it. Five years and all that crap. But no offense but your dumbass friends tried to beat me to death that night so I’d really rather not have a repeat performance.”

She shook her head. “Captain, I assure you, no one is here to beat you up.”

Jim sighed and gulped down his shot. “Fine. What are you studying?”

“Xenolinguistics. You have no idea what that means.”

“The study of alien languages, morphology, phonology, syntax. It means you have a talented tongue.”

“I’m impressed. For a moment there I thought you were a dumb hick who only has sex with farm animals.”

“Well, not only.”

“This townie isn’t bothering you, right?”

“Hendorff? You do know I can throw you in the brig now right?” Jim asked, crossing his arms in front of his chest.

Hendorff reddened. “Sorry, sir, I was asked to—”

But he never got to finish because suddenly a hand fell on Hendorff’s shoulder, violently pulling him away.

“That townie is off limits to you.”

Jim’s eyes widened when he saw Spock standing there looking angry and not fake angry.

“Ow,” Hendorff cried, holding his arm. “I think you dislocated my shoulder, sir.”

“Spock!” Uhura admonished. “You weren’t supposed to really hurt him. This was a reenactment! For fun.”

“The captain does not appear to find it fun.” Spock glared. “Please leave.”

Uhura sighed. “Good luck,” she whispered to Jim as she moved away to check on “Cupcake”.

“Hey!” the bartender yelled. “Someone has to pay for these drinks.”

Spock moved in to take Uhura’s place.

He gave his boyfriend a quizzical look. “What was that all about?”

“A misguided effort to right a wrong,” Spock admitted. “You had told me about your experience here that night and how your ultimate meeting with Captain Pike after influenced your decision to enlist in Starfleet.”

“Yeah, it did. You asked them to reenact it?”

“I wanted to assure you had I been there, it would have gone differently.”

“Or you would have joined in with the beating,” Jim joked.

“Never.”

“I don’t know, Spock. You were with Uhura then and even you yourself have told me how much she manipulated you back then. You might have thought I was being obnoxious to her like the rest of them did.” Jim smiled though, to soften his words.

“I cannot know, I suppose. But I would like to believe I would have stopped it.”

“Babe, I’d like to think we’ve all changed in these last five years. And if it all brought me to you and what we are now, how can I complain?

Spock moved his hand to Jim’s, putting their fingers together.

Jim smiled. “Want to get out of here and go somewhere a lot more private?”

“I thought you’d never ask.”

“Hey! The drinks!” the bartender shouted after them.

Flash Fic, August 30, 2023

And the conclusion (the full fic coming soon to AO3)

“I can hardly believe we’re actually married.”

Spock came to stand behind his new husband and he wrapped his arms around Jim’s middle, drawing him back against him.

Jim had been standing next to a floor to ceiling window in Jim’s temporary apartment.

“You are exhausted, T’hy’la.”

“Been a very long day.”

Spock tightened his hold. “Some would say we moved too fast.”

Jim shook his head and turned in Spock’s arms. He kissed Spock’s jaw which made him shiver. He wanted to take Jim to bed but the dark circles under Jim’s eyes gave him pause.

“We know what we know,” Jim answered him. “And we know we want to spend our lives together. If we waited six months or even a year, that wouldn’t change.”

“Agreed.”

Suddenly the terminal in Jim’s living room alerted them to an incoming message.

Jim slipped out of Spock’s arms to go to the desk.

“Crap, it’s Mom. She must have heard.”

He sighed as Spock came forward to join him. A moment later Winona Kirk’s stern looking face appeared.

“James Tiberius Kirk, did you just get married without your Mama?”

“Er.”

“I take it that’s a yes.”

“It was, uh, spur of the moment. This is Spock. He’s my husband.”

Winona Kirk scoffed. “I know who he is. Now my son-in-law. Spock.”

“Madam.”

“I can’t believe you got married on Yorktown. Hideous place.” She wrinkled her nose. “When does the Enterprise go out?”

“Uh.” Jim glanced at Spock.

“Three months, six days, twenty-two hours and—”

“Plenty of time to come here for a real wedding.”

There? Mom, that’s Riverside.”

“Don’t you think I know where I live? You can do it. You and Spock are coming here. We’ll have a ceremony and a reception.”

“We already had—”

She narrowed her eyes. “Was Spock’s father there?”

“No,” Jim admitted.

“Shameful. I’ll contact him and he can come to your Riverside wedding. And you know, I’ve been in contact with your brother so—”

Sam? Mom, come on.”

“I’ll contact you with the details. You contact Starfleet to arrange to be here. Kirk out.”

Jim stared at the now blank screen.

Spock stared with him.

“What just happened?” Jim whispered.

“I do not know.”

Another alert.

Incoming transmission from Ambassador Sarek.

“Well hell.”

Spock smirked in some amusement. “And so it begins.

The End

And that’s a wrap for August

“I can’t believe we’re doing this,” Jim declared.

Spock arched a brow. “It was your idea.”

“I know, but…you aren’t having second thoughts, are you?” And the idea that Spock might be made Jim suddenly queasy.

“Not even one. It is my desire, my dream, to spend the rest of our lives together.”

Jim, eyes shining, kissed him.

“All right, all right, save that for after the ceremony!”

Jim released Spock, laughed, and turned to Bones. “Glad you could make it.”

“Make it? Wouldn’t miss this for the world. You two are a couple of idiots, but it’s about time you realized you’re better as idiots together.”

Spock frowned. “That is nonsensical and illogical.”

At that moment, Commodore Paris arrived in the conference room to perform the ceremony. She smiled widely.

“Welcome all to the wedding ceremony of Captain James T. Kirk and Commander Spock. It’s an honor to officiate. Gentlemen, are you ready? Have you got everyone here that you want to witness?”

Jim glanced at the door of the conference room to see Sulu, Chekov, Jaylah, Scotty, and Uhura arriving.

He smiled. “Yeah I think that’s everyone.”

Uhura came over to Spock and hugged him. “I can’t believe you’re going to do it.”

“It is what I want,” Spock said simply.

“I know.” She smiled at Jim. ”Congratulations, Captain.”

“Thank you, Nyota.”

“Places everyone,” Commodore Paris said.

Jim and Spock moved to the front of the conference room and stood in front of the Commodore.

The words were a blur to Jim, as he couldn’t take his eyes off Spock, or stop thinking that when all of this was said and done, Spock would be his husband.

“Jim, do you take Spock to be your husband?”

“Oh yeah.”

Everyone laughed and even Spock’s lips twitched.

“And Spock, do you take Jim to be your husband?”

“I do.”

“By the power designated to me by the United Federation of Planets, I pronounce you husbands. You may kiss.”

“You bet I will.” Jim fisted Spock’s dress uniform tunic and pulled him close, sealing their union with a passionate kiss.

Two more parts after this and we will call this done (August 28 and 30)

Jim woke with a heavy Vulcan arm wrapped tightly around him as though keeping Jim save from would-be captain-nappers. It was cute if mildly causing him some claustrophobia issues.

Though Jim still lay in bed, he suspected once he rose, he’d have a spring in his step. Yeah, okay maybe it was not the time for cliches, but yes, he was happy.

Just then Spock’s lid lifted and he was suddenly staring right at Jim.

Jim smiled. “Morning.”

“Is it already?”

“Yep. We wore each other out. I don’t think anyone is coming in here.”

The brows furrowed between Spock’s eyes.

Jim’s smile widened. “No one is going to steal me.”

After a moment the confusion cleared and Spock relaxed his arm and then lifted it off Jim.

“Are you certain?” Spock asked with a raised row. “Ensign Martin wished to do so.”

“She never stood a chance.”

“No?” Spock looked uncertain and hopeful all at once.

“I don’t really know how you didn’t know.”

“Know what?”

Jim half-smiled. “That I’ve been in love with you for a long time.”

Spock leaned in to kiss him, eyes shining. “I know now. And you know it is the same for me.”

“Mmm hmm. Breakfast?”

“Later.”

And once more Jim found himself learning just how much Spock wanted and loved him.

Flash Fic, August 21, 2023

Jim pulled back from Spock, shining.

“Then I can assume I had not miscalculated.”

Jim shrugged. “Well my granny had a saying about assuming—”

Jim.”

He laughed breathlessly and found himself feeling a little manic with joy. He put his hands on Spock’s forearms.

“We’re in a way too public place. Why don’t we find a more clandestine place to be?”

“Clandestine,” Spock repeated.

“It’s a great word.” He felt almost drunk, though he’d had nothing at all to drink.

“I’d prefer privacy, yes,” Spock said, rather primly.

Jim grabbed Spock’s hand and led him away from the bridge and the water feature. He couldn’t help but think it was pretty lucky their apartment building wasn’t all that far away.

They reached the building in no time and only had to ride the glass lift that was situated on the outside of building to allow for spectacular views of the station with two or three others. Jim made sure to stand close to Spock so no one could stick themselves between them where they’d clearly not be wanted. Spock stared straight ahead.

Unfortunately, one of the riders recognized Jim and decided to strike up a conversation.

“Captain Kirk, it’s nice to see you, sir.” At Jim’s blank look the female officer straightened. “I work for Commodore Paris.”

“Oh.” Jim nodded and smiled politely. “Ensign Martin.”

Her countenance brightened. “Yes that’s right. Elaine Martin. Perhaps you’d like to join me for drinks in the lobby in about an hour?” There was hope in her voice.

Jim glanced briefly at Spock who was clearly pretending not to pay any attention.

“Unfortunately, I won’t be able to. Commander Spock and I have a very important meeting to attend that’s going to take up the rest of the evening.” The lift door opened. “And this is our floor. Have a nice night.”

And Jim dragged Spock out with them as the door closed in Ensign Martin’s disappointed face.

Spock arched a brow. “You are popular as ever.”

Jim merely snorted in response, stopped at his apartment door, scanned for entry, and barely kicked the door closed before he jumped on Spock and started kissing him.

Flash Fic, August 18, 2023

“How did you find me?”

Spock was somewhat hesitant to answer Jim’s question.

He’d come across Jim that night standing alone by a water function near one of the bridge’s on Yorktown. He’d appeared pensive.

Spock didn’t want to lie. Or even attempt to avoid lying by deflecting the question.

“I have been monitoring your life signs.”

Jim turned away from leaning over the railing to eye Spock. “You have? Since when?”

“The night you were mugged. I put a tracking device on your communicator that allowed me to track your vitals.”

“Sounds almost like you are stalking me.”

“Captain—”

Jim waved that away. “I’m only half-kidding. I know you’re not really a stalker. But why such precautions? We’re on Yorktown. Don’t you think I’m pretty safe here.”

Spock arched a brow. “May I remind you that you were mugged.”

He laughed at that. “Well, yeah. Can’t argue with that.”

Spock moved to stand beside Jim and searched the area to see what prompted Jim to come there.

“Were you meeting someone here?”

Jim smiled and shook his head. “Did you need me for ship’s business?”

“No.”

“Then?”

This was where it could get uncomfortable.

“I wished to spend time with you,” Spock admitted, carefully.

“Me?” Jim’s look was quizzical. As though he couldn’t imagine in a million years what Spock was talking about.

“Yes…I…I’m really not sure how to explain.”

“Try me.”

“Part of the reason my relationship ended with Nyota is because I had an interest of a romantic nature in someone else.” Spock paused. “I believe I did mention it.”

The captain frowned and leaned back against the railing. “Did you? I must have missed that.”

“Apparently. And now perhaps it should occur to me you missed it deliberately.”

“Meaning?”

“I had hoped there was a shared interest between us but if I have miscalculated—”

Spock found himself shutting up due to Jim’s mouth suddenly on his.

He found he did not mind.

Flash Fic, August 16, 2023

Spock was a little surprised when Doctor McCoy had shown up at his apartment door along with the captain, though he supposed he shouldn’t be. In the years they’d all been acquainted, McCoy was usually around when Jim was.

In the early days, Spock had a hypothesis that they were more than friends, or at least the doctor had wanted to be, but that was early on and Spock no longer believed there was anything between them but a brotherly bond.

Still Jim hadn’t mentioned inviting McCoy to breakfast the night before when Spock had been tending to Jim’s wounds.

Although that had been unexpected and rather mildly annoying, what was more alarming was the cool look Jim had given them as Spock stepped out of his apartment to join them for breakfast.

“Morning,” Jim said, without any trace of warmth.

In the beginning of their contentious relationship, Spock had been somewhat used to cool looks from his captain. He’d found Jim rather moody.

But as they became friends, he got many more smiles and laughter.

Until right before Krall, that was. Something had changed between them then and Spock never really knew what it was.

It was then he had made the decision to leave for New Vulcan.

All that had changed again though and he was staying. Things had begun to look up for them again, including as recently as last night, and yet this morning cold Jim was back.

“Where are we going for breakfast?” Spock made himself ask. He had very little appetite now.

“The Yorktown base cafeteria works for me, if does you two.” Jim eyed him. “It’s got plenty of vegetarian choices.”

Since they were hardly going to have a private table for two now with McCoy along where they ate really didn’t matter so Spock agreed.

Since it was cafeteria, it was serve yourself, and when Spock had selected oatmeal with raisins, he made his way to a table where Jim had already sat himself.

The captain had a cup of coffee and a cinnamon streusel muffin.

“Is that all your are going to eat?”

Jim nodded. “All I feel like this morning.”

“Are you suffering any ill effects from last night?”

“Nah, I’ve been beaten worse. By your girlfriend’s thug defenders for instance.” Jim smiled at him this time but there was hard steel behind it.

McCoy chose that moment to slam his tray of food down before plopping down in a chair. “I’m pretty sure these scrambled eggs have been under a heat lamp for three days.”

Jim snorted and took a sip of his coffee.

McCoy looked at Spock. “You and Uhura reconcile again?”

Spock frowned and shook his head. “Negative. My romantic relationship with Nyota will not continue. Why do you ask?”

“She was there this morning in your apartment.” McCoy shrugged.

“For ship business concerning the roster of the Enterprise when we depart Yorktown.” Spock glanced at the captain. “There have been some that have chosen not to continue.”

Jim nodded, but Spock could not help but notice Jim’s eyes appeared suddenly warmer. “I figured that. Altamid was pretty traumatic for a lot of the crew.”

“Yes,” Spock agreed, then turned back to McCoy. “Not only do Nyota and I still serve under the captain onboard the Enterprise, but we also remain on good terms.”

McCoy smirked. “Good to know. Isn’t it, Jim?”

Jim shook his head but he smiled. “Speaking of ship’s business, we really need to get together with Scotty and discuss—”
