This story is inspired by the not unexpected announcement that Paramount would not be making another movie in the Kelvin universe. After nearly 10 years since the last one and several false starts I don’t think anyone is that surprised given the new ownership there. I have mixed feelings. I would have loved to see one more movie with them all but on the other hand I can now happily break up Spock and Uhura without ever having to see them together as a couple in another movie. They didn’t work, they never will.

Anyway, just one more after this for “family” month and I might make it TOS. We shall see.

“So unfortunately they’re pulling the plug on any more adventures,” Jim confirmed to his crewmembers gathered before him. He sighed. “If the Enterprise goes out again, it’ll be with a new crew.”

“So the rumors are true,” Bones said softly.

Jim nodded. “Afraid so. Some of you may be offered assignments elsewhere in Starfleet.” He smiled faintly. “But for this exact crew, that’s the end.”

Scotty grunted. “Aye. Maybe it’s for the best anyway. With Pavel dying on that last mission, it doesn’t quite seem the same without him.”

“True. Anyway, check your own messages for assignment in the future, but for now you’re all officially on leave.”

Bones shook his head. “That’s it for me. I’ll be sending in my resignation. Been thinking about it anyway. Kind of tired of dealing with so many catastrophic injuries. I’ll probably head back to Georgia and set up practice to be an old country doctor.”

That didn’t really surprise Jim. He could sense Bones’ weariness for a while. And the death of Chekov and Bones’ inability to do a damn thing about it was sort of the last straw. He got it. More than most, really.

“How about you, Sulu? What do you think you’ll do?”

Jim knew Sulu was likely to be promoted to captain soon and the pilot would deserve it.

Sulu shrugged. “For now, I’ll be going to Yorktown to be with Ben and Demora. I’ve missed too much time with them.”

“Scotty?”

“Don’t know yet and that’s the truth. Not sure I’m ready to hang up my engineer’s hat, so we’ll see what they have in store for me. What about you, Jim?”

“They want to promote me to admiral,” Jim admitted. “Have me stationed at HQ. I haven’t decided whether to accept it. I’ve got more aches and pains in my limbs than I have limbs,” he joked. “I’m considering retirement.”

Uhura, who had stood there looking defiant, had her arms crossed in front of her chest. “And what go back to being a farm boy?”

“Maybe.” Jim turned to look at Spock, who had remained stiff and silent, as usual. “What about you, Spock?”

“I have already offered my resignation,” the Vulcan said. “I have no desire to command a ship, and I have already served with the two finest captains in Starfleet. My intention is to settle on New Vulcan.”

Which is entirely what Jim had expected to hear. No reason to expect anything else.

He simply nodded and went to turn away when Uhura made an irritated noise. He glanced her way.

“What is wrong with you?” Uhura demanded. “You both act like this is all settled and off you go.”

“Uhura—”

“No. The rest of you might keep your mouths shut but I definitely won’t. Just like that, you’re going to let him go to New Vulcan without ever telling him how you feel?”

Jim opened his mouth, closed it.

She then turned to Spock. “And you! I can’t believe you. You’re really going to leave him behind and never tell him he’s your T’hy’la and you’ve worshipped him from afar for years?”

“Nyota, this is not your concern.”

“You bet your Vulcan ass it is. We broke up because of the way you feel.” She pointed at Jim. “And you go around with a sad puppy dog face all the time while drowning your sorrows in booze and casual lovers because you think Spock will never love you or want you and I’m sick of both of you. So get your act together. I don’t care if you both resign from Starfleet but you sure as hell aren’t going to sit here and tell us you’re living separate lives.”

Jim stared at her, his heart pounding.

“I know I speak for all of us,” Uhura said. “We’re a family. All of us. And you don’t get to walk away from us without a payoff for all the time we’ve put up with you two.” She pointed at Spock. “You…talk to him. The rest of us will be over here, pretending not to listen.”

Jim watched as the group of them took several steps away from him and Spock. He was shaking as he glanced at Spock, who was clearly blushing.

“Um, listen, what she said, you don’t have to—”

“It is true,” Spock interrupted quietly. “Everything Nyota said.”

Jim swallowed. For a moment he couldn’t form words. But then he tried to lighten the mood a bit because everything seemed so intense all of a sudden.

“I’m sure worship is a little over the top.”

Spock shook his head.

“No?”

“I do worship you, Jim.”

“Well.” He didn’t know what to say. He felt overwhelmed.

Spock suddenly looked smaller. “You are under no obligation to—”

“Yeah, I am,” Jim said, quickly. “It’s not that…it’s really kind of a shock.”

“A shock?”

“To go for years wanting something you know you’ll never get, couldn’t get, to suddenly be looking at it staring you in the face, somehow actually getting it, I don’t know how to act, what to think. I’m at a loss.”

“What does that mean exactly?”

“It means I think I’m having a heart attack.”

“Jim—”

He shook his head. “No. That’s wrong. I love you, Spock. I think I always have. From day one. From the minute you tugged your uniform down to accuse me of cheating. I don’t know. I just know it’s always been you. Always will be you.”

“Why don’t you kiss him then?”

Jim glanced over at the group and saw Bones smirking.

“Do you mind? You’re supposed to be pretending not to listen. And—”

Spock kissed him silent, speechless. Jim grabbed hold of him and clung to him as the kiss deepened between them.

“I don’t think Spock will be going to New Vulcan after all,” Uhura said, smugness in her tone.

No. At least…not alone.

Not alone.

Jim stood on an outdoor patio overlooking a water feature Yorktown had adorned with glittery garlands, shiny bells and holly. All around him it was decorated for the Terran winter holiday season.

Yorktown, being an enclosed space station, a snow globe as Bones had alluded to, was able to control their weather. With few exceptions if there happened to be instability in space. There was not now, though, and someone in charge had decided to make it festive they would ensure a light snow fell on Yorktown’s outdoors.

They had dropped the temperature too and though some, like Spock, had complained, Jim found himself reminiscing about such weather growing up in Iowa.

He wore a coat. He’d pulled it on before leaving the holiday party inside the facility that owned the patio he now stood on.

In a few short weeks he’d spend yet another birthday on Yorktown. He had hoped they’d finish the rebuilding of the Enterprise in time to be on their way, but alas no. The estimation was the beginning of February.

“Captain?”

Jim turned to see Spock approach, fully enveloped in a heavy coat with a scarf and woolen hat completing the look. For some reason he reminded Jim of a garden gnome.

“Hi Spock.”

“You left the party.”

Jim smiled faintly. “I needed some air. It was getting a bit overwhelming in there. Lots of noise.”

“It is a happy occasion, is it not?”

“Oh it is. Just…feeling a bit lonely and sorry for myself.”

“Lonely? I do not understand. There were over three hundred people in there, Captain.”

Jim laughed. “Oh I know. But I don’t have a personal relationship with any of them. So yeah. Just a bit. It’s no big deal.”

Spock looked pensive. “You have friends among them, so I believe you mean something specific when you refer to personal.”

“Mm.”

“You mean…an intimate personal relationship,” Spock surmised. “Someone you are sleeping with.”

Jim sighed.

“I have irritated you? I did not mean to overstep.”

“No, you haven’t. But yeah. I mean, that is what I am talking about. But maybe more intimacy than just sex. Which obviously is part of it but I want more. Which is weird.”

“Why is it weird?” Spock wondered.

Jim shrugged. “I’ve grown up I guess. I want more from life than a series of throw away lovers.”

“And that fills you with sorrow?”

He snorted. “No, the fact that there is no one out there for me does.”

Spock glanced away. “I believe they are shortly going to do a sing-along of Christmas Carols.”

“Mm. I said I’d do it with them.”

“You do have an admirable voice. But perhaps before we go inside there is something I would like to do.”

Jim turned to face him. “Yeah? What’s that?”

Spock’s gaze rose to above their heads. Jim followed his gaze and saw Spock holding mistletoe.

“What–?”

Spock covered Jim’s mouth with his in what was anything but a brief mistletoe kiss. When they finally parted, Jim was left breathless and a little dazzled.

“Merry Christmas, Jim.”

“It is now.” Jim grabbed the collar of Spock’s coat and pulled him into a kiss.

This one was suggested by my plant loving friend, Kris. Hope the plant shows up!

Spock knew his captain had not been particularly interested in this particular planet, but he had come along with the landing party anyway because more than anything Kirk hated being left behind.

Consequently on a planet of only plant life, Kirk was bored. And to make that plain, he was flirting currently with Lieutenant Ryan, who to Spock’s annoyance…flirted back.

Spock stopped before a giant plant that was more than twice the size of the humanoid currently examining it. Perhaps three times. He had never seen anything like it.

Kirk sauntered up next to him. “What have you got there, Commander?”

Spock glanced at him briefly. “You are aware that Ilea Ryan is married, are you not?”

“Hmm. What? Yeah, of course.”

“You were flirting.”

“Was not. And I am too, so what’s your point? What is this thing?”

“A rather fascinating plant that—”

“A plant, huh?” Kirk stepped closer. “It sure is ugly.”

“Captain, I don’t think…Jim!”

At that moment the plant suddenly opened wide, like a gigantic mouth, and swallowed Kirk up into it.

“Spock!!!”

All Spock could see was Kirk’s feet, but in just a few seconds, those too hand disappeared. The captain gave one final cry and then went silent as the plant bounced up and down.

Spock lifted his phaser and shot at the giant plant’s stem. It wriggled but did not release its prey.

“Commander,” Sulu rushed over. “Did this thing eat the captain?”

“It did not eat him, Mister Sulu,” Spock insisted. “But it has abducted him. I am going to pry its mouth open, you stand by to fire should the need arise.”

Spock braced himself and then moved his hands to where he had seen the plant swallow Kirk. Spock managed to successfully separate the two parts of the plant, and he reached his arm in, searching for the captain.

His hand finally felt shirt material, Spock gabbed on to it and pulled hard.

Suddenly he landed on the ground, Kirk falling on top of him. Overhead, Sulu shot at the plant until it stopped moving toward them.

But Kirk didn’t seem to be breathing.

“Spock to Enterprise. Immediate beam up directly to the medbay.”

A moment later the transporter engaged.

Both Spock and McCoy stood next to the biobed as Kirk’s eyes fluttered opened.

“What the—” He sat up abruptly.

“Easy, Jim.” McCoy settled him back down. “Don’t get all worked up.”

“What happened?”

“You do not recall?”

Kirk scrunched his face. “Not really.”

McCoy smiled. “You almost became plant food.”

“What? Oh my God. That plant ate me?”

Spock arched a brow. “Since you are in fact here, Captain, it did not eat you.”

“Came close, though,” the doctor declared with a cheerful chuckle. “Luckily for you, your husband saved you. Again.”

Kirk’s gaze followed McCoy as he moved away, then landed on Spock.

“Uh, thanks, babe.”

“If you had not been on that planet where—”

“Yeah, yeah.”

Spock softened. “You should rest, Jim. I will be here when you wake.”

“Like always.”

“Like aways.”

This is deliberately vaguish

“Truth or dare.”

Jim smiled at Sulu who had been chosen by the group of bridge officers to ask the questions.

It had been a boring few weeks and to unwind and have something to do, they’d chosen to play games in the rec room off shift. Yesterday they had played scrabble and of course Spock had won.

“Truth.”

“What’s the most unusual place you’ve had sex?”

“First question and we’re down and dirty,” Uhura commented with a snort.

Jim glanced at Spock, who arched a brow at him.

“Like Cincinnati or a closet?”

Chekov laughed.

“You pick since you’re answering the question,” Sulu said.

“A Jeffries Tube.”

“On the Enterprise?” Scotty exclaimed.

“Er,” Jim said evasively and shrugged his shoulders.

Sulu merely shook his head and set the card aside. He picked out another and turned to Spock.

“Truth or dare, Commander.”

“I always choose truth,” Spock replied with enough frost in his tone to chill the room.

Admittedly he had thrown something akin to a Vulcan fit when they’d chosen this particular game. He was not a fan and did not approve.

“Have you ever called out someone else’s name during sex?”

“Geez,” Bones drawled. “Let me guess. Jim picked out these questions.”

“Did not.”

Sulu ignored them. “Commander?”

“I will not answer that.”

“But you chose Truth.”

“I do not care.”

“Spock,” Jim said in a low voice.

“Do you choose Dare then?” Sulu asked.

“Lieutenant,” Chekov addressed Uhura. “You answer for him, since you vould know.”

She shook her head and crossed her arms in front of her chest. “Nope. Not going there.”

“That tells me that he did,” Bones chortled.

“Bones.”

His friend stuck his tongue out at Jim, who barely refrained from laughing. But he was captain, he should be above all this.

“I do not choose Truth or Dare as I am not participating,” Spock said even more coldly than before.

“Now, Spock, you agreed to play,” Jim reminded him.

That earned him a death glare. Jim cleared his throat.

“Consequence then,” he told them. “The rules say if they won’t do either, then it’s consequence.”

‘Okay,” Sulu agreed. “Let me think what the consequence is.”

Spock aimed his death glare at the pilot.

“Well, as captain, I think his consequence is that Spock has to bring Sulu his morning coffee for the next three days.”

“That’s it?” Sulu protested.

Jim gave him a quelling captain’s look and Sulu shrunk down in his chair.

“Fine, yeah. That’s your consequence, Commander.” Sulu turned to Uhura. “Truth or Dare?’

“Truth.”

Sulu smirked. “When you were together did Spock ever say someone else’s name during sex?”

“Okay, that’s it,” Jim declared. “Game over.”

“Captain—”

Jim arched both brows at Sulu.

Sulu deflated. “Yes, Captain.”

“Time to break this up and everyone get a goodnight’s sleep. That’s an order.”

Jim decided it was best to put some space between him and his grumpy first officer so he exited the rec room with Bones.

“Well, that sucked,” Bones told him. “That was just getting interesting.”

“What it was was awkward. I don’t want Spock to be uncomfortable and report me for a harassing environment, Bones.”

“Like he would.”

Jim shrugged. “It was not fun for him and so it had to end.”

“Yeah, yeah, you always play favorites.” Bones squeezed Jim’s shoulder. “Goodnight. And good luck.”

Jim laughed. “See you, Bones.”

Just then he spotted Spock coming down the corridor towards his quarters, so Jim quickly turned and accessed his own, entering and closing the door just in time. He leaned against the door and sighed at his escape.

His door chimed.

“Damn. Computer, identify visitor.”

“Commander Spock.”

Jim sighed and pressed the button to let him in.

Flash Fic, December 30, 2024

Here’s my New Year’s Eve Flash (a few hours early)

“Here you are. I wondered where you’d gotten off to after the ball dropped.”

Jim smiled faintly. Another year past. This one spent temporarily based on Yorktown while the Enterprise was rebuilt after being pretty much destroyed on Altamid.

Delay after delay in the Enterprise being finished had Jim feeling pretty down as the Yorktown grand parties went on all around him. Like Bones said, he had snuck off to get away after the ball drop at midnight. Yorktown time. He didn’t want to think too hard on what time it was in Riverside where his mom had been spending the holiday season with Sam, his wife, and their son.

Jim wanted to be there, but Starfleet said no. And here he was.

He turned to Bones with false cheer. “Just needed to clear my head after all that champagne and celebratory kisses.”

“Mm. Your birthday’s in a few days again.”

“Let’s not go there. Not this year.”

“You sure you don’t want another party?” Bones moved to stand next to him at the railing that overlooked one of Yorktown’s many gardens.

“Positive. Last year we at least could be happy we defeated Krall and saved Yorktown from his nefarious plans. This year? We’re stuck here waiting forever for the Enterprise to be finished.”

“Scotty says he thinks it will be done and ready for the shakedown by the end of January. For real this time.”

Jim nodded. “He told me. And I hope it’s true. I’m sick to death of being here. It’s funny, I was feeling…I don’t know…almost claustrophobic on the Enterprise before all that. Now this place is driving me nuts.”

“And yet you thought you would be happy here.”

He shook his head. “Not happy, exactly. Content? Having something different? I don’t know. But I’m ready to leave.”

“Me too, honestly,” Bones admitted. “I’m sorry Komack said no to your family time.”

“He’s never liked me. I shouldn’t have been surprised, but yeah, I was disappointed. I haven’t seen Sam in years. And it would have been nice to…” He shrugged. “Whatever.”

Bones glanced toward the doors leading out to where they stood. “Spock’s coming. I’ll see you inside.”

“Thanks, Bones.”

A moment later, Spock took over the spot beside him that Bones had vacated.

“I didn’t mean for you to leave the party,” Jim said, softly.

“It is no great hardship.”

“I saw you talking with your dad.”

“Yes, but when I left he was talking with several other ambassadors. He did not require my presence.” Spock paused. “But you did.”

“I’m sure Uhura would like to spend some time with you.”

Spock sighed, softly and almost like a slight breeze. “Why do you deny yourself comfort when it is offered?”

“I don’t want to be a burden, Spock.”

“You are not a burden. You are my…boyfriend… to use an Earth term.”

“Not for long.”

Spock frowned. “Are you intending to end our relationship?”

Jim huffed a laugh and turned to him. He pulled him in for a quick but passionate kiss. “That’s not what I meant. I meant we haven’t been boyfriends for long.”

“Ah. The amount of time does not correspond to any lack of depth of feeling nor my desire to assist you out of this funk.”

“I know. I’m sorry. I’m just feeling sorry for myself.”

“You are sad because your holiday leave was denied. I do not think that is unusual or unwarranted.”

“I really wanted us to go to Riverside so I could introduce you to all of them.”

“There will be other opportunities, ashayam.”

“With all of us at once? I hope so, but every year something changes. Mom’s disappointment when I had to tell her was…it was hard.”

“I understand,” Spock said quietly. “Your disappointment was equally distressing for me.”

Jim walked into Spock’s arms, and Spock closed them in a tight embrace.

“I’m sorry. I should be happy to have you here with me. And that your dad is here for you.”

“Ashayam, there is nothing wrong with missing your family and being sad that your plans did not work out. You can also be glad I am with you. And we can find pleasure in spending time with my father.” Spock squeezed him. “And be anxious to resume command of the Enterprise.”

Jim chuckled against him. “I’m definitely tired of Yorktown.” He pulled back slightly to look at Spock. “But it’s here that we became what we are now.”

Spock’s lips curved. “That would have happened elsewhere, too. It was time for us both to stop denying what we felt.”

“Mm. That’s very logical of you, Mister Spock.”

“I tend to be that way.”

Jim laughed, kissed him, and squeezed him tight. “Let’s go back inside and find your dad. Maybe Bones, me, you and your dad can do a resounding version of Auld Lang Syne.”

“Let us hope not.”

Jim grinned. “I love you.”

And after Spock responded in Vulcan, “Taluhk Nash-veh K’dular”, they went inside.
