Starfleet Academy Month

Flash Fic, September 26, 2025

And here is the last September flash. A bit of a twist on the Academy. Next Friday will be October 03, 2025 so we will be in Halloween/Fall mode.

“Are there any questions?” Spock asked as he shut down the overhead screen in his classroom and turned to face the cadets in his class.

A hand went up in the middle of the second row.

“Cadet Lewis, you have a question?”

She brightened. “Is it true you used to date Captain Kirk?”

There were several audible snickers.

Spock barely held back his sigh.

“Any questions pertaining to the actual content of today’s lesson?”

No hands went up.

“Dismissed.”

As the cadets began to file out of the classroom, he noticed a few spotted the man sitting in the shadows at the top of the stadium style seating, but they didn’t seem to recognize him, though he did earn a few curious glances.

When the cadets were gone, the man stood up and walked toward Spock.

“Used to, huh?” Jim chuckled.

“I suppose it is sort of true,” Spock replied. “We no longer ‘date’ since we are mates.”

“We went to a nice dinner last night, doesn’t that count as a date?” Jim leaned over and gave Spock a quick kiss.

The door of the classroom opened and Cadet Lewis came hurrying back in.

“Sorry, Professor, I think I dropped my lipstick…” She stopped in her tracks, eyes wide as she stared at them. “S-sir.”

Jim smiled. “Cadet Lewis.”

She scrambled over to where she’d been sitting, bent down and retrieved her lipstick. She straightened.

“So it is true!” she exclaimed. “But you still are dating, aren’t you?”

“Cadet—” Spock began.

“Commander Spock is my husband,” Jim explained.

“Oh wow! Wait until I tell Margery!”

Jim laughed.

Lewis blushed. “Congratulations, Captain, Commander.”

“Thanks. You’d better be on your way, Cadet. I have Starfleet business to discuss with your professor.”

“Yes, of course.” She hurried from the classroom.

“What Starfleet business?” Spock asked.

“Ship repairs will be completed by the end of the week, so your temporary teaching assignment concludes then too.”

Spock nodded. “I cannot say I am sorry to hear it. Though if you take an eventual promotion to admiral, I might consider returning to teach at the Academy.”

“You don’t want to command a starship?”

“I have no desire to serve on a ship you are not on,” Spock stated simply.

Jim reached over and squeezed his hand. Then he glanced around. “Boy, this all brings back memories.”

“Fond ones?”

Jim grinned. “Well, my fondest are in what used to be your office when you slammed me down on your desk and—”

Spock shut him up with a kiss.

Flash Fic, September 19, 2025

Hard to believe only one week left after this for Academy month! Then we move on to October’s theme. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Here’s this week!

There really wasn’t any reason to stay any longer, and yet Jim knew he was lingering.

Professor Spock was resting in the hospital bed, though he was awake and had been conversing with Jim and members of the staff. He’d messaged someone Spock had asked him to so could come be with him.

He’d been assured Spock would be fine would likely be released in the morning.

And yet, he was reluctant to leave.

“Well, I guess, I should be—” He started to say for like the fourth time. But something always interrupted him. The last time, a nurse had brought Sprock a vegetarian soup for him to sip.

This time he was interrupted when the person Jim had messaged about Spock arrived.

Nyota Uhura.

Jim was well familiar with her. She’d been snooty from the moment he’d spoken to her at the bar in Riverside. He didn’t really feel like dealing with her fawning over Spock now.

And of course she ran right over to Spock and started fussing with him and the position he was in and his pillows.

Of course she had to be the one.

Jim grimaced. “Anyway, since your girlfriend’s here, I’m going to get going,” he said loudly.

They both stopped and then stared at Jim. He couldn’t tell if it was because they forgot he was even there or what.

Spock’s mouth hung open slightly. “Nyota is not my girlfriend.”

Jim was nonplused by this.

Spock seemed a bit dazed himself. “I thought…” He trailed off and oddly enough blushed.

Uhura cleared her throat. “I think I’m going to run to the cafeteria for some tea.” She leaned down to kiss Spock’s forehead. “I’ll be back.”

Jim watched her leave, admittedly confused. He wasn’t sure what just happened.

“Uh.” He knew he sounded lame.

Spock was still looking embarrassed. “I apologize, Jim. I assumed…”

Jim got closer. “Assumed what?”

Spock did not meet his gaze. “That you shared my interest. If I have misinterpreted—”

Jim’s eyes widened and he leaned over Spock to kiss him on the lips.

When he pulled back, Spock’s dark eyes were filled with warmth.

“I don’t know, maybe it’s me who hit my head,” Jim joked.

“Perhaps I was too subtle.”

Jim shook his head and then nodded. “Yeah, maybe you were. But I get it now.”

He kissed Spock again.

A throat cleared and Jim looked over to see Uhura smirking, holding a cup in her hand.

“Everything worked out now?” she asked.

Jim sat on the edge of Spock’s bed and grasped Spock’s hand in his. “Yep.”

She chuckled and came further into the room. “Now how exactly did you hit your head, Professor?”

Spock replied, “As it happens…”

This one is most definitely an AU, read on!

“Is this seat taken?”

It took a moment for Jim to realize that whoever asked that question must be speaking to him, because he felt someone hovering nearby. He looked up from concentrating on his PADD. And looked up again. The speaker was tall, thin, and Vulcan.

“What?”

“Is the seat next to you currently occupied?” the Vulcan spoke slowly, as though Jim were an idiot. Perhaps he was as he still just stared.

When the Vulcan continued to stare back, Jim finally replied, “No.”

With a slight nod, the Vulcan sat in the seat next to Jim at the table in the cafeteria. He’d brought with him what smelled like spiced tea and a plate that looked like it contained a raisin scone.

Jim allowed his gaze to wander around the cafeteria and noted that were several available tables that were entirely unoccupied. That the Vulcan chose to sit at his table was a puzzle. With a shrug, Jim went back to his PADD and absently took a sip of his coffee.

“Are you a first-year cadet?”

Jim found it to be an interesting question considering he was not wearing any kind of cadet’s uniform, but rather a t-shirt and jeans. Still he supposed considering he was in Starfleet Academy’s cafeteria the question made some sort of sense.

Jim did not recognize the Vulcan, which meant he did not attend the VSA on Vulcan. At least not currently anyway. He might be a past student. Judging by the Vulcan’s current attire, he was likely teaching courses at Starfleet Academy.

He thought about his knowledge related to a Vulcan who had enlisted in Starfleet.

Jim asked carefully, “Spock?”

“That is correct,” the Vulcan replied, unable to completely cover his surprise. Yes, this was the half-Human Vulcan. “You did not answer my question.”

Jim smiled. “I am not a first-year cadet, no.”

“How is it you are aware of my identity, mister…?”

“Kirk. James Kirk. I have heard of you,” he admitted. “Based on what I have heard, I figured you were Spock.”

“I see. You definitely have an advantage over me. What year of the Academy are you in, if I may ask.”

“You can ask.” Jim chuckled at the blank look on Spock’s face. Yep, he was well familiar with that look. “I am not a cadet at all, Spock.”

“Surely not a parent of a student.”

He outright laughed. “Nah. A little young for that. I’m teaching here this semester. Battle Tactics.”

Spok minutely frowned. Jim could tell he was trying to determine how best to politely ask Jim for his qualifications.

“Normally I teach on Vulcan,” he added, watching for Spock’s reaction.

“The planet Vulcan?’

“Do you know another?” Jim smiled.

“Where—”

“The Vulcan Science Academy.”

You teach at the Vulcan Science Academy?”

“Yep. Have for the past, er, two years. I was asked to teach Battle Tactics here, so I’ve taken a temporary leave from VSA. Feel free to check me out.”

Spock blinked, fired up his own PADD and a moment later said, “You are a quarter Vulcan.”

“I am, yes. Mom’s side. She was half Vulcan. Her mother. I suspect my students find me a bit too Human, but they seem to like me anyway.”

“Your grandmother.”

Jim nodded. “Yep. You probably have heard of her. She’s fairly famous. She assures me that her relationship with my Human grandfather was brief and a mistake, but she tolerates Mom and me anyway. And my brother.”

“Who is your grandmother?”

Jim watched Spock again for his reaction. “T’Pau.”

T’Pau?” Spock sounded outraged.

“Sort of blows your mind, huh?”

“I…there is no proof that any of that is true.”

Jim glanced down at his PADD, pressed a few buttons, and then handed that PADD to Spock, who studied it with a noticeable muscle twitch next to his eyebrows.

Jim leaned back. “But now that you mention it, I have been thinking of switching sides.”

Spock looked up, handed the PADD back to Jim. “Switching sides?”

“Joining Starfleet. They have a really cute Vulcan officer.”

Spock actually blushed.

Jim grinned. “Anyway, I’ve been wondering, Spock, why you wanted to sit here when there are plenty of tables available.”

Spock’s blush deepened. “I thought it was obvious. Given my interest, I can only assume that I somehow recognized your Vulcan heritage, which prompted me, logically, to attempt contact.”

Jim laughed. “Logically. Yes. I guess so.”

“What else would it be?”

“My cute ass.”

Spock cleared his throat. “Perhaps that too.”

PS. I kinda love the idea of this universe and think Jim/T’Pau interaction with her as his granny would be epic, but that’s me, LOL
