Some Jim and Bones for the win

Photo by Sebastian Voortman on Pexels.com

Jim was maybe a little on cloud nine when he returned to his dorm room that night. A little tipsy too, maybe.

“You look nice,” Bones greeted him. He was seated at his task beating up on his computer terminal. “Surprised to see you though after your hot date.”

Jim smiled dreamily and pulled up a chair to sit by his friend. “Spock had a very early field trip planned with his geology class. Some rock museum or whatever.”

Bones scowled. “Glad I’m not in that class.”

“Mm. I suppose as a doctor you don’t need to learn about rocks.”

“I can tell you to kick a pile of them.”

Jim laughed. “Need help?”

“With this test?  Not unless you have some special knowledge of the guts of Orions or something.”

He half-closed his eyes. “I know something of the anatomy of Orions.”

“Screwing them doesn’t count,” Bones advised him. He paused. “Spock? You had to pick Spock?”

“Fate picked him.”

“Gimme a break.”

He laughed again. “No really. I really was just playing a chess match with him that first time. I didn’t even know who ChessMaster was. Or is. And lo and behold it was Spock.”

“Behold.” Bones snorted. “Why didn’t you just kick his ass at chess and be done with it.”

“Well, I did do that but we discovered our very mutual attraction. It wasn’t, you know, intentional. I mean it was. But not because you hate him or anything.”

“Hmm. Should I be looking for a new roommate? You going to start playing house with the Vulcan?”

“That seems a bit fast.”

“Agreed. But you’ve already been moving in that direction, so I wondered.”

“I haven’t even thought about that. I’m just having a really good time.”

“Does he know it’s just a good time?”

“Bones.” Jim shook his head. “You don’t need to worry about me or him. We’re fine. I can take care of myself. I met his parents tonight.”

His parents?” Bones stared at him. “Jim, that implies seriousness.”

“I’m not unserious.”

“Jim—”

“Look, we went to McKinley’s.”

“Wow, that’s a nice place. He’s really laying it on thick.”

Jim ignored that. “And his parents happened to be there too. They’re visiting Earth. Pop’s an Ambassador.”

“I doubt Spock called him Pop.”

Jim chuckled. “I’d pay a large amount of credits to see his father’s face when he did.”

Bones cracked a smile.

“Anyway, they seem nice. I probably am going to have dinner with them another night.”

“So you are serious about him.”

“I’m really not thinking that far ahead, Bones. I just want to see where this takes me.”

“You’ve never met parents before, have you?”

“Truth be told some of my past lovers didn’t think I was very presentable for that.”

“You do seem on your best behavior with Spock.”

Jim got up from his chair. “I’ll stop bugging you and let you study. I’m going to take a long hot shower and call it a night. If you hear me belting out ‘I Could Have Danced All Night’ from the shower, ignore me.”

“My pleasure.”

Jim laughed, bent down, and kissed the top of Bones’ head. “Night, grumpy.”

“Night.”

They had just been seated for dinner at a restaurant known for an extensive selection of meat, seafood, vegetarian and even Vulcan specific dishes that Spock had chosen for their first “real” date. Jim seemed pleased by his choice so Spock knew he had done well.

The waiter had just taken their drink order, when Spock heard a familiar voice.

“Spock! It is you.”

And suddenly his mother and father were next to their booth gazing down at Spock and his date.

“Mother, Father,” he greeted them.

Mother beamed. “I didn’t expect to run into you tonight. And who is this?”

Jim had that look Humans called ‘deer in the headlights’ on his face but he was also attempting to smile.

“This is Jim Kirk. My parents.”

“Nice to meet you.”

His mother opened her mouth to say something, but Sarek spoke up first.

“We planned to dine here tonight, perhaps we will join you.”

Now Spock suspected his own expression mirrored Jim’s. “I am here on my first—”

His mother turned to his father. “Not now, darling. I suspect Spock would rather wait to schedule a time to dine with us. Spock, dearest, I’ll contact you later to choose a time and day. It’s wonderful to meet you, Jim. Perhaps we will see you again?”

Jim’s smile was more genuine now. “Perhaps.”

They moved away and he could see his mother whispering in his father’s ear.

“I apologize,” Spock said. “I assure you that was not some sort of setup.”

Jim laughed. “I never thought it was.”

“Good. They can be…overbearing sometimes.”

“I get it. My mother’s the same way? When we first met for our chess match she was all over me as to whether it was a date. She’s always trying to find me a significant other.”

Spock arched a brow. “Is she?”

“Mm. She already has my brother settled. Sam left home when we were kids. The reasons don’t really matter, but after he reentered our lives, he got married and had a kid. They’re settled on Deneva. Mom has been working on me ever since.”

“I see. Have you told her about me?”

“Not yet.” Jim laughed again. “She’d be picking out China patterns.”

Spock shook his head. “I understand. But…would you be averse to joining me for a meal with my parents? I would understand if you would rather not. I know the timing is quite soon in our relationship. It is merely that their visit to Earth is now. No pressure though. As I said, I understand.”

“To be honest, meeting the parents isn’t something I’ve ever done before. My relationships, if you can call them that, never reached that point. But I guess technically I’ve already met them tonight.” Jim shrugged. “So, sure. I’d come with you.”

Spock was relieved to hear it as he believed it meant that Jim was serious about their future. As a Vulcan, he did not wish to participate in a casual relationship.

“In the meantime, let’s enjoy this parent-free dinner.”

“Indeed,” Spock agreed.

“There you are.”

Jim smiled at Bones as he entered their dorm later that day. “Hey, Bones. Uh. Sorry I didn’t remember to let you know I wasn’t coming home last night until this morning.”

“Uh-huh. I kinda figured you wouldn’t. And I think I’ve figured this whole thing out.”

Jim scooted past him into the kitchenette. He reached into the fridge and took out a bottle of beer. He twisted off the lid and took a sip.

“Enlighten me.”

Bones joined him in the kitchenette and leaned against the counter opposite Jim. “I decided to take a look at who was signed up for chess matches yesterday for the club.”

Jim chuckled. “Did you? Thought you weren’t interested in chess.”

Bones snorted. “I’m not. But I am nosey.”

“That you are.”

“You weren’t on the list of players. And by the way, TooSexy?”

“Seemed appropriate.”

“Gimme a break. You definitely think too much of yourself, my friend.”

Jim chugged some more beer. “What’s your conclusion?”

His fried looked smug. “You haven’t been playing chess. You’re seeing some girl. For some reason you don’t think I’d approve of her which is why the subterfuge.”

“I have to hand it to you, Bones. You’ve really been thinking about this.”

“Of course I have. Is it someone I know? Someone I’m interested in?”

There was a knock on their door and Jim set his bottle down on the counter.

“Hold that thought.”

Jim went to the door and opened it, smiling brightly at Spock.

“Hey, sorry. I haven’t changed out of my uniform yet. I was distracted by Bones.”

Spock stepped inside the dorm and gazed blankly at Bones, who now stared at him with his mouth agape.

Jim turned. “Bones, this is ChessMaster. And you’re half right. I am seeing Spock. We’re about to go to dinner.”

“You are welcome to join us, Doctor,” Spock offered.

“I’d rather choke on a—”

“Bones!” Jim laughed.

“No, thanks.”

Spock nodded.

“Give me just a sec. I won’t be long. Don’t kill each other while I’m changing.”

“Why would I kill the doctor?”

Bones mumbled, “I have somewhere to be.”

And Jim watched as his friend made his way to the door. “We will talk later, Jim.”

Jim waved and then laughed when Bones glared before leaving.

“That went well.”

“The doctor was unaware you and I are seeing each other.”

“Mm. He thought you were a girl.”

Spock arched a brow.

“Never mind that. Now that he’s gone, you can help me remove my uniform.”

“You need assistance?”

Jim winked. “Especially with the zipper on these pants.”

“The zipper? Oh.” Spock blushed slightly. Cleared his throat. “I am sure I am up to the task of assisting you.”

“I’m sure too.” Jim drew Spock close and kissed him. “We don’t have a reservation for dinner, do we?”

“We do not.”

“Then dinner can definitely wait.”

I think maybe three more parts after this and we will conclude this.

Jim woke slowly, cocooned in warmth, held close, bare skin to bare skin. It took only a moment for his brain to catch up. Yes, he was in Spock’s bed where he had spent a very good night.

Spock stirred too and suddenly dark eyes gazed upon him.

“Good morning,” Jim spoke first. For light streamed gently through the blind on the window.

“Good morning.” Spock’s voice was deep and rough and it sent another thrill through Jim that he was well aware they had no time to indulge.

But it brough back memories of the night before and the passion they’d shared over and over.

“You are smiling.”

“Remembering last night.”

“Then I share that smile, inwardly anyway. We will be late if we don’t rise soon.”

Jim yawned. “I suppose. I’m inclined to miss my first class and just lie in.”

Spock’s lips curved. “As an instructor at the Academy I must advise you against that.” He paused. “However, as…”

When he hesitated, Jim supplied, “Lover.”

A faint color appeared on Spock’s cheeks, but he said, “As your lover I can think of no objection to having you continue to lie here in my bed at your leisure.”

“That sounds like approval to me.” Jim grinned.

Spock shook his head and made to rise. “I, however, am conducting an exam in my first class.”

“Mm. My roommate is in that class.”

“What is your roommates name?”

“Bones. Leonard McCoy.”

“Yes, I know him.”

Jim chuckled. “I bet. He’s a complainer. I love him, of course. But he does love to bitch. And he hates that class.”

“You do not appear to be influenced by his opinion.”

As Spock stood,  Jim turned on to his back and linked his arms behind his head on the pillow.

“Nah, I know he’s a grump. Besides you have mad chess skills.”

“Ah, so you appreciate me for my skills at chess.”

“That and your fantastic body and delicious lips.”

Spock arched a brow. “I really must get ready.”

“Speaking of, we don’t have to set up a chess match just to see each other now, do we?”

“No.”

Jim smiled. “Great. But maybe you’d better kiss me before you go into the bathroom in case I get lonely.”

“You are illogical,” Spock pronounced, but he leaned down to do so anyway. It was quick though.

“That’s it?”

“Neither of has yet brushed our teeth. As desirable as you are…”

Jim laughed. “Yeah, yeah. I get it. Go get ready, Professor.”

And as Spock made his way into the bathroom, Jim dozed with a smile on his face.

Somehow Jim ended up being victorious two chess games in a row with Spock, and he’d have been a little surprised except Spock had seemed distracted since Jim had arrived at his apartment.

Rather than set up a third match, they’d moved over to the sofa in Spock’s apartment. He’d made them tea but neither of them had taken more than a sip.

“Are you okay?” Jim asked. “You don’t seem very much into chess tonight. I would have been all right if you’d wanted to cancel.”

Spock shook his head. “I did not want to cancel. But you are correct that I am perhaps distracted. I received communication from my mother that my parents will be coming to San Francisco next week.”

“That’s not a good thing?”

“Seeing my mother is, of course, pleasing, but my father and I have not spoken since we argued over my decision to enlist in Starfleet rather than accept enrollment at the Vulcan Science Academy. I made something of a scene in front of the acceptance board.”

“Your dad was embarrassed?”

“Vulcans do not feel embarrassment.” Spock’s lips twitched slightly at Jim’s raised brows. “Or at any rate, we do not acknowledge when we do. I believe a visit with my parents may become awkward.”

“Why will they be here?”

“My father is the Vulcan Ambassador to Earth and will be attending Federation meetings. Mother is availing herself of the opportunity to see me and other members of our family who reside on Earth.”

“I definitely understand awkward family moments.” Jim smiled. “Maybe I can distract you from thinking about all that?”

“I do not know if I am up for another chess match,” Spock replied.

Jim laughed and shook his head. “That’s good, because I wasn’t planning on distracting you with my brilliant chess moves,”

“Then—”

Jim moved on the couch until he was basically straddling Spock’s lap. With one hand under Spock’s chin to lift his face upward, Jim pressed his mouth to Spock’s.

For a moment Spock did not react and he felt as stiff as a block wall. Jim feared he might have miscalculated and was preparing to stop his actions and form an apology.

But then Spock’s mouth softened under his, he groaned softly, and his hands came up to hold Jim to him. The kiss deepened and soon Jim found himself under Spock on the couch, their mouths slanting against each other hungrily.

When they paused to breath, Jim whispered, “Should we take this to the bedroom?”

Jim went home to shower since what he needed for his classes was there anyway and as he was came out of the bathroom with only a tower around his waist, Bones waited for him and thrust a steaming hot cup of coffee into his hand.

“Thank God. Just the way I like it.”

“Mm. Hot enough to burn your insides. Which is terrible for you, of course.”

Jim smiled. “Of course.”

“Where have you been? Not that it’s any of my business, yada yada.”

“Where I said I was. It was kind of late when we finished playing chess and I didn’t feel like walking by myself back to campus in the cold windy dark. Getting close to October you know. Who knows what ghoulies might be out there.”

“Uh-huh.”

“And I slept on the couch.”

“So what are your plans today?”

“Classes all day,” Jim told him, taking a sip of coffee.

“Dinner?”

“Er. I have another chess match when classes are over.”

Bones nodded, seeming unfazed. “Signed up for a lot of those, did you?”

“Well, you know. The more you win, the more others want to compete against you.”

“I wouldn’t know. Chess bores the crap outta me. Who are you playing today?”

Now here’s where Jim had to be careful. He didn’t think admitting he was going to be playing with ChessMaster again was a wise thing to do. Bones would definitely be wondering what was up. And sticking his big nose into things. But he didn’t want to exactly lie to Bones either.

“I’ll have to look on the board later,” Jim hedged.

“Going to spend the night with this one too?”

He laughed. “Well, I mean you never know. I’ll let you know if I’ll be out all night. Have a good day, Bones.”

“I’ve got ten tests. How can I have a good day?” Bones grumbled as he left.

Jim checked his communicator.

You made it back to your dorm?

Jim smiled.

Yes, see you later!

Just Rambling Stuff

So I started posting the chess guys on AO3. Mostly because I might want a sexy moment in there. Still I figured the story can’t go on forever so I marked it as having at the most 3 chapters.

The Advent Calendar prompts are up for this year and I “claimed” 3 of them but honestly I’m not sure I won’t drop most of them. There’s someone on there I don’t read who has gone around and claimed like every prompt that was interesting and while two people can do the same prompt or even three (there’s no real limit) I just found it a bit off-putting. Plus I have my own plans for a Christmas story but if I can make the three I “claimed” short enough I might actually write them.

I’ve been updating all the rest of the stories and have updated all of them during the month of August (and one in September I think) so I’ll keep plugging away on that when I get inspiration. But this comes my busy time for stories due to a number of factors so we will see how that goes.

Not sure if I will get to any Fall themed stories this year. We will see.

Today is the last day of our excessive heat wave, so I will have some relief on that.

I still want to write a story where Prince Jim of Earth finds a frozen Spock statue during space exploration and brings it with him (which would be the second part of my “Cursed” series). But I have to manage to finish a few other things first.

I’m back to also contemplating quitting writing Spirk, perhaps in 2025, so it seems counterproductive to start another story given that. But we will see. I have been writing and posting Spirk stories for 12 years (in 2025) and that seems long enough by anyone’s standards. But again…we will see. If I want to continue, why not?

I’ll be decorating for Autumn this coming weekend.

It was nearly midnight when Jim sighed, leaned back in his chair, and looked regretful.

“So we’re still tied at this point. Two games for you and two for me. And it’s really late. I have to go. I have an early class.”

Spock found himself wanting to ask the cadet to stay, but he was well aware he should not. Though Jim was not his student and there were no regulations establishing more than friendship between them, it was still early in their interactions. He’d only met Jim earlier that day, which seemed odd now, as Spock felt as though they’d known each other for years.

Most illogical.

So as Jim rose, Spock did not make either an objection or a suggestion otherwise. He didn’t want to see Jim leave but he was forced to accept it.

Jim smiled at him as they approached the door to leave Spock’s apartment. The Human had an engaging smile that Spock, unfortunately, did find rather distracting.

“I had a really great time, Spock. Thank you for the matches and the dinner.”

“I enjoyed your company as well.”

But then Jim opened the door, called goodbye, and walked away.

Spock never even allowed himself to get to the point where he requested to see Jim again and he found that irritating about himself.

He closed the door and leaned against it, feeling as though he’d failed some test.

But just as he started to step away there was a soft knock on the door.

Spock’s heart picked up speed and he opened the door. Jim stood there with a half-smile on his face.

“Listen, it’s dark and windy out there and I really don’t want to walk all the way back to my dorm right now. Can I just sleep on your couch?”

Spock just stood back so Jim could reenter his apartment, and he closed and locked the door.

“Let me get you a sheet, blanket, and pillow.”

Jim’s smile became a full one. “Thanks. I appreciate it.”

Jim reminded himself that this wasn’t really a date. He’d assured Bones of that and his mother too but he couldn’t deny Spock’s invitation to his apartment that included dinner had his heart racing a bit.

Spock was attractive as hell and Jim loved a guy (or girl) with a great mind. Spock was the whole package…tall, dark and handsome and brilliant.

But just because he invited Jim to eat dinner while they had a chess rematch didn’t mean the Vulcan professor thought of it their meeting again as anything other than a means to defeat Jim.

Of course, he had acknowledged Jim was sexy.  But merely an offhand remark, right?

Still as he knocked on Spock’s apartment door he struggled to tamp down his anticipation.

The door opened and Spock stood there, dressed in his black professor’s uniform, looking cool as a cucumber yet hot as well.

“Come in.” Spock stepped aside to allow Jim to enter.

It was a simple apartment, just a couch and a chair, with a desk and a terminal in the living room. No sign of any entertainment devices.

The kitchen was tiny with just a table that only allowed for two chairs. Spock had set up the chess set there. There was a bar type counter on the edge of the kitchen with two stools and that is where Spock had laid plates of food.

Jim could see a short hallway across from the kitchen that presumably led to the bathroom and bedroom. No luxury whatsoever, just efficiency.

When Jim joined Spock at the stools he smiled down at the plates. “What are we having?”

“It’s a Vulcan dish made with root vegetables and a bland sauce.”

Jim laughed. “What? Did you say bland?”

“Most Humans do not find Vulcan food exciting. Humans are used to more flavor in their food and typically find our dishes boring and simple,” Spock advised.

“Did your mom?”

“Indeed. She has adjusted recipes to be more to her liking and neither my father nor myself object. I have used one of her recipes but it may still be bland to you so I wanted to offer the warning.”

“Got you.” Jim tasted it. He was not a fan of vegetables in all honesty, but he was raised to eat what he was given when you were hosted by someone at their home, and so he ate every bite without a protest.

Spock watched him, though, assessing him, though he waited until they’d finished before asking, “Your thoughts?”

Jim tried to think of the nicest way to put it but he ended up with, “Vegetables are not my first choice in meals but I found the dish pretty good.”

Spock inclined his head. “I applaud you on diplomacy.”

Jim laughed.

“Shall we adjourn to the chess game?” Spock asked. “I would appreciate getting to where I defeat you.”

“Mm. Confidence, Chess Master. I kind of like it.”

They sat down to play and Jim spend much of the time chattering about nonsensical, unimportant things, until Spock looked up with something of a glare.

“You are intending to distract me with your endless chitchat.”

“I’d think a master like you could handle a little distraction.”

“Perhaps I can. I must say I find your appearance more distracting than your rather inadequate attempts to distract me with conversation.”

“My appearance?”

“Because you are, as your chess name indicated, too sexy.”

Jim grinned and shook his head. “Now you’re trying to distract me by flirting with me.”

Spock arched a brow. “And it has succeeded. Checkmate.”

“Ah, damn.”

“Shall we play again?”

“You’re on.”
