And in keeping with the monthly theme

“I think this is it this time.”

Jim eyed his best friend as they leaned against rocks. They were stranded, there was no doubt about that. The shuttle they had taken to get to this godforsaken location on this damn rock had exploded and was beyond repair.

“ I don’t know why you say that,” Jim said, grimacing in pain.

He was pretty sure a bone was sticking out of his leg. He didn’t want to look. Bones’ arm was in a sling they’d made.

“No transportation, communicators not working to contact the ship, we’re the only survivors of the mission party.” Bones snorted. “Such as we are. I don’t know how it could get any worse.”

“Sure, there’s all that. But…”

When he didn’t continue, Bones, surprisingly, didn’t push him to.

Jim wasn’t even sure what he intended to say.   Like Bones he was feeling a little hopeless and it was getting harder to maintain optimism.

He leaned his head against the rock and closed his eyes.

He wanted to be rescued more than anything. In exactly two weeks he was supposed to go to New Vulcan with Spock and be formally bonded. It looked like now that was never going to happen.

And wow that was depressing. He could feel tears begin to sting his eyes. Just what he needed.

He forced them away somewhat angrily and was about to try to start some kind of conversation with Bones when the growling started.

The hairs on the nape of his neck went up.

Was that his imagination?

More low growling.

“Bones,” he whispered. “Bones, do you hear that?”

“Hear what?” Bones demanded, not quietly.

“Shh. I think some creature’s stalking us!”

“Stalking us? Jim—”

Just then a huge white creature with a horn on his head came into their vision. It howled menacingly and started toward them.

“You just had to ask how it could get worse,” Jim complained as he attempted to scramble to his feet.

“Jim, you can’t travel on that leg!”

Jim looked at him, incredulous. “So I should stay here and let him eat me?”

“No, but—”

The creature sped up then, like at a run to reach them just as Jim heard the sound of a familiar low whine of transportation.

“Oh please.”

And then just like that, his view of the creature with the horn on his head was replaced with a view of Spock standing in front of the transporter, hands calmly clenched behind his back, Scotty there at the controls.

“Told you I’d get them.”

“Indeed you did.”

“Spock!” And Jim fell to the ground just as Spock went to help him.

Flash Fic, 02/05/2019

“You can’t save Spock by sheer will, Captain,” Sulu declared.

Jim pressed on Spock’s gaping, bleeding wound. “Watch me.”

“Captain, we’re sitting ducks here in this clearing.”

“Do what you need to do, Mr. Sulu. In fact, that’s an order. But I’m not leaving him.”

“Captain,” Spock said weakly. “Go with the others.”

“No.”

“If you stay then we will both die.”

“Okay then.”

“Jim…”

“I’m not leaving here without you, Spock. So can it.”

“Keptin,” Chekov spoke up. “I have the Enterprise. They can beam us up.”

“Do it.  Beam us up. All of us.”

It was much later that Spock looked at him with somewhat droopy eyes as he rested on a biobed, all patched up. Or mostly. Thanks to Bones.

“Captain, you should have left me behind.”

Jim smiled a little and squeezed Spock’s hand. “There’s an old saying from Earth, Mr. Spock. Used by comrades for hundreds of years. You go, we go.”

Spock just stared at him. Jim nodded and turned to see Uhura approaching.

“Stay with him,” he urged. “He’s in and out of it, but he’s doing much better.”

He went to move past her, but she put her hand on his arm.

“Captain, thank you. For what you did down there.”

“I would have done that for anyone. And you’re welcome.”

She looked thoughtful for a moment, looked at Spock and then back to Jim. “He’d want you to stay.”

“I’ve got work and anyway, I’m sure he’d rather have you.”

“No. You’re wrong. Maybe it’s not my place to tell you, but, Spock has…” She stopped, bit her lip, and sighed. “He has very deep feelings concerning you. He doesn’t know how to express them.”

“Lieutenant…”

“And I have a feeling you reciprocate those feelings. I’ve thought so for a long time. Whatever you think about Spock and me, right now, we’re just friends. It’s been that way for a while. He’d want to see you, Captain.”

Jim exhaled. “I do have reports and a few things to do. But…I’ll come back later.”

“So…what I’m telling you…it does have meaning?” She searched his eyes.

He chuckled low. “Yeah. It’s meaningful.” He patted her arm. “Thanks. I’ll be back later.”

“And you should clean up,” she said, arching a brow like her former, apparently, boyfriend. “You still have Spock’s blood all over you.” She frowned. “And your own?” Her gaze went to the red on his shirt. “Are you bleeding, Captain?”

“It’s nothing.”

“Has Leonard checked you out?”

Bones suddenly appeared. “Did I hear my name?”

“The captain is bleeding.”

“Uhura! Damn it. Bones, I’m fine.”

Bones grabbed him and hauled him away. “I’ll be the judge of that, you idiot.”

Sunday Flash Fic

“Captain, I have something to tell you.”

Jim fired his phaser at the approaching Klingons. “Now? Come on, Spock. I’m a little busy.”

Spock fired his phaser. “I am aware. But in case we are unable—”

“Mr. Spock, I don’t have time for this.” The truth was Jim was pretty sure he knew what Spock wanted to say. And he appreciated it, really. He’d been waiting for this for a long ass time. But now—

“A logical response, Captain, however—”

“No. Really. Not now, Commander. Cover me.”

He rolled away from his spot by the wall, firing his phaser frantically, even as he could hear Spock doing the same. He reached the unconscious Sulu and quickly assessed him.

“Captain?”

“Yeah he’s alive but in bad shape. We’ve gotta get out of here now.”

“Acknowledged. In the event that either or both of us do not make it…”

“Yeah, yeah. Got it. Get over here now.”

Spock broke out into a run and slid in to where Jim waited with Sulu. Jim eyed him.

“You’d be great at stealing home, by the way.”

Spock frowned. “Captain?”

Jim flipped open his communicator. “Kirk to Enterprise. Beam us up now.”

A Klingon disruptor shot barely missed his head. Jim winced.

“I must inform you, Captain, that I have developed…”

They suddenly dissolved and appeared on the transporter. The three of them fortunately. Bones rushed toward them.

“Romantic feelings for you. In fact, I love you.”

Bones froze just a few feet away from Sulu. He stared at them, then shrugged. “I guess I owe Scotty some scotch.”

Spock blushed furiously as he scrambled to stand.

Jim grinned and stood up, leaning toward Spock and planting a big fat kiss on his lips. “I love you too.”
