“How long is this going to go on?”

Jim tilted his glass back and took a large swallow of the burning whiskey. “Hmm?”

Uhura sighed and took a drink from her own glass. She flicked her head in the direction of the group across the room. “How many days?”

“How many days what?”

“Captain, you’re so tedious like this. You and Spock not speaking. How many days so far?”

“You’ve got your nose all up in everyone’s business. You probably know.”

She snorted. “Four days.”

He smirked. “See?”

“You know he only spoke up because he is your friend and is concerned for your safety as both your friend and your first officer.”

He finished his drink. “Are you through?”

She sighed again. “Yes.”

“Excellent.” Jim rose from his seat and without looking back at Uhura he went up to the table where Spock sat with a group made up of his science department. “Commander.”

“Captain.”

“Can we talk?”

Spock excused himself and they moved to the side of the room. Jim shifted awkwardly, not looking at him.

“So, uh, listen. I guess maybe I overreacted, so for that, I’m sorry.”

“I accept,” Spock said quickly, “and offer my own apology for stating my point in an abrupt and insensitive way.”

Jim nodded. “Okay. So, if you, I don’t know. Want to play chess—”

“Yes.”

Jim glanced at him. Nodded again. “We could do it in my quarters or—”

“Yes.”

Jim blew out a breath. “Uh. All right. See you there in a few minutes then.”

He left the rec room and headed for his quarters. It felt better to be talking to Spock again, but he couldn’t deny he still felt…stiff and awkward. Kind of like they had just before it all went to shit on Altamid.

He dreaded returning to that non-friendship.

Only a moment later, Spock appeared, requesting entry, so Jim let him in.

“Spock, I think we need to talk more,” Jim said as soon as Spock entered. “Look, I feel that…things are kind of off with us. Maybe that’s why it was so easy for us to get into that big fight, I don’t know. But I really don’t want to return to the way things were with us when you wanted to leave.”

“I did not want to leave. I felt it was my duty to—”

“Yeah, I know. That’s semantics, Spock.”

Spock’s dark eyes darkened, if that were possible. “You wished to leave also.”

He nodded. “I did. And…I just don’t want us to reach that point again. Where we’re barely friends.”

“I do not wish that either.”

“I know I have an issue, Spock, and I am working on it.”

“An issue, Captain?”

Jim exhaled. “I have these feelings surrounding you and I’m…I know they need to go away or at least be controlled.”

“What feelings?”

“Lord, you don’t intend to make this easy, do you? Soft ones. Feelings that go beyond friendship, I guess, and I’ve had them a long time, so I know a whole bunch of this is my fault because of my inability to deal with it, but I don’t want it to be awkward between us because of unwelcome feelings on my part.”

Spock sucked in a breath. “And if they are not?”

“Huh?”

“If your softer feelings are not unwelcome, what then?”

Jim’s jaw dropped open. “Spock, what are you saying?”

Spock stepped close, but his hand on Jim’s face. “I share your softer feelings.”

Jim stopped at the nurse’s desk in the Starfleet hospital outside the area where he’d been told Jaylah had been taken.

“Hi, James Kirk. Here to see Jaylah, Ensign.”

She nodded. “She’s resting comfortably in room 424, Captain.”

Jim went down the hall, shuffling the items in his hands as he did so, until he found the correct room. There was no door on the outside, as often was the case with hospital rooms. He craned his neck around the opening to see if she was awake or had other visitors. He saw no one and Jaylah sitting up.

“James T,” she greeted him instantly as he approached her bed. She smiled. “You came.”

“Of course I did.” He thrust the bouquet of flowers in her general direction, as well as the balloon declaring “Congratulations.”

She tilted her head. “Over there, on the table, please.”

Jim saw there was a vase already on the table filled with flowers as well as a big stuffed bear wearing a blue diaper. He shook his head and added his flowers over there and set his balloon next to her bed.

“Well? Where is the little one?”

“They take him for a walk. He’ll be back in a moment.”

“Who did?”

“Commander Spock and Uhura.”

“Ah.” He nodded. “They beat me here. Last minute meetings are a pain. Bear come from them?”

“Yes.”

He sat on the edge of her bed, but other than a slightly reproachful look, Jaylah let him. “So, what’s next for you? With a baby…”

They both looked toward the door at the commotion, in the form of his first and communication’s officers returning with the baby. Of course Uhura had the little blue wrapped bundle and was cooing nonsensically at him.

“Some linguistic you are,” Jim joked.

“Captain,” Spock exclaimed. “We did not expect you to be free for some hours.”

Jim’s lips twitched. “I charmed my way out early.”

Uhura rolled her eyes at him, but stopped to show him Jaylah’s little bundle of joy. “Beautiful, isn’t he?”

“I’ll say. Give me that baby.” Jim scooped him up into his arms as Spock joined them by the bed.

“Be careful, James T.”

“I know how to handle babies,” Jim insisted.

“When have you held one that young?” Uhura asked.

Jim didn’t answer at first. He let the little boy grab his index finger. Then he said softly, “On Tarsus, when a woman there lost her life shortly after giving birth. I cared for the infant for a time.”

There was a very subdued collective gasp, but Jim didn’t miss it.

“Well, you’re just about the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. Let me give you to your beautiful mama.”

He turned to Jaylah and laid the bundle in her arms.

“Gorgeous. You’re very lucky.”

“Yes.”

Uhura cleared her throat. “What about you, Captain? Think you’ll have one of your own one day?”

He shrugged. “Anything’s possible, Lieutenant. With surrogacy, it’s definitely possible someday.” He yawned. Then he covered his face in embarrassment. “I’m so sorry.”

“You are exhausted,” Spock said, quietly. He looked to Uhura. “Nyota, I am taking him home to rest. Would you like to stay a little longer?”

“Sure. I can get back to my place on my own.”

Spock grabbed his arm.

“I’ll be by tomorrow,” Jim called out as he was shuffled out of the room. “I could have stayed,” he grumbled, even as he sagged against Spock.

“As you say, we will come tomorrow.” Spock paused. “Well?”

Jim sighed. “Yeah, I got it. The promotion.”

“So you are…”

“Fucked.”

“Jim—”

“Admiral Kirk, yeah. Can we stop and get fries on the way home?”

“Yes.”

“And a burger.”

“Yes.”

“And cookies.”

Jim smiled, leaned over and kissed Spock on the cheek. “Thanks, honey.”
