New Year’s Eve Flash

Photo by Jill Wellington on Pexels.com

It was hard to believe they’d celebrated his last birthday on Altamid and now it was nearly a year later, and he was attending a New Year’s Eve gathering. A tradition that Federation had adapted all those years ago when it had been founded.

Jim had his own memories of New Year’s Eve over the years. Some pleasant and some not so pleasant.

This time it just reminded him he was still in limbo. The Enterprise wasn’t ready and his life was delayed.

He was outside on a patio that had been decorated for this kind of thing. Gold and silver, balloons, garlands, glittering lights, champagne pyramids. All very classy.

Across from where he had temporarily placed himself stood Uhura with her new very close friend. A few months back, Uhura and Spock had ended things seemingly for good, but if Jim had anticipated anything changing, he was disappointed.

Bones walked over to him and handed him a flute of champagne. “You look miserable. You used to love parties.”

“Hmm. I can’t wait for the ball to drop on this one. I’m tired and cranky and look forward to sleeping all day tomorrow.”

Bones smirked. “First you have to play Chekov’s game.”

Jim groaned and glanced over towards Chekov who wore a tuxedo of all things and had Yeoman Martha Landon on his arm. Yeoman Landon wore a tight sparkly silver ball gown. They made a very attractive couple.

“He’s doing that again?”

“Yep.” Bones patted Jim’s arm. “He’s about to start.”

“Attention, attention,” Chekov spoke into a mike. “This year’s game vill be different than last year’s. My beautiful Martha vill draw a name out of this top hat and then that person vill be asked a question based on this prompt in this other hat.” Chekov paused. “Does everyone got that? Does anyone have any questions?”

“Yes,” Jim spoke up. “Executive officers are exempt, right?”

“Jim,” Bones muttered.

“Captain!” Uhura admonished.

“Fine. But at least the captain should be exempt.”

“All in good fun, laddie.”

“This is stupid,” Jim groused.

“Play along,” Bones told him.

Jim clamped his mouth shut.

Yeoman Landon pulled a name and handed it to Chekov.

“Keptin Kirk,” he announced, rather gleefully. She handed him another slip. “Oh! This is good. If there was one thing you could ask Commander Spock vhat vould it be?”

Jim looked around for Spock and saw him standing somewhat close to Uhura and her new partner. Jim shrugged.

“Are you a cuddler, Spock?”

Spock looked blank. “What?”

Jim spoke louder. “Are you a cuddler?”

“I do not understand the question.”

Jim snorted. “You understand. In bed…do you like to cuddle?”

“Jim,” Bones said in a low warning voice.

“You know…whatever.” He downed his champagne and handed the empty glass to Bones. “I’m not in the mood.”

He turned and went back inside.

“Jim! Captain.”

He turned to face Spock who had followed him. “What?”

“Are you all right? You seem…unhappy.”

Jim shook his head and kept walking. “It’s nothing.”

Spock grabbed his arm and stopped his forward motion. “It is not nothing.”

“It’s just…nothing has changed. I’ve been here a year. Nothing has changed. And Carol…”

Spock frowned. “Carol Marcus? What about her?”

“She just got married.”

“I was unaware you were following her life.”

“I’m not. I wasn’t. I mean…once we were…there was a chance.” Jim stopped and shook his head. “Never mind.”

“You were in love with her?”

“No. Not really. I really liked her. Once. We were going to give it a try but…it’s hard to fall in love with someone when you already love someone else.”

Spock seemed to consider this and for a moment Jim though maybe he’d ask if Carol loved someone else then which would certainly be the safe thing to say. To ask.

“You loved someone else when you thought about a relationship with her?”

“Yes. And I don’t really resent the fact she’s found someone and is happy. I don’t. But it just reminds me that I still haven’t moved on from the unrequited love I’ve felt for…years. It’s just…it’s making it just a little hard to think another year is passing me by.” Jim blew out a breath. “It’s not your problem, Spock, and I apologize for what I said out there. I need time to myself.”

“I do not think that wise, Jim. And besides…I have something to discuss with you that I think you may find of great interest.”

“You’re looking unexpectedly chipper this morning,” Bones grouched the next morning when he met Jim for brunch.

“Afternoon, actually.” Jim grinned. “I’m feeling pretty good, too. You look a bit worse for wear though.”

Bones grumbled. “What happened to you last night? You disappeared.”

“I found out the answer to my question.”

“Your question?”

Jim smiled. “Spock’s a cuddler.”

Santa Baby, Part 5

Thank you all for your kind words of support.

With a week or so left until Christmas, we’re up again. I know this one is a bit short and sweet but hey, I have lots of holiday stories on AO3 if you need something more substantive.

Spock showered quickly, though admittedly he was tempted to linger in the luxuriously warm water shower, and then brushed his teeth and used the mouth wash Jim had provided. Jim had left his sweatpants, a T-shirt and even a brand-new package of underwear. Apparently, the young cadet thought of everything. Indeed, there were also warm socks for Spock’s feet.

Spock was unused to someone thinking so much about his welfare. At least on Earth. His mother would have been thoughtful like this, but since his move to Earth and being involved with Starfleet, he had not experienced such care. He welcomed it, though perhaps a little embarrassed that he did. If Vulcans experienced embarrassment, which of course they did not.

Spock exited the bathroom and found Jim waiting for him in the apartment kitchen, with a warm smile, and a cup of steaming hot tea.

“This ought to make you feel better.”

Spock took the tea gratefully and sat at the table nearby that Jim gestured to. Jim brought what smelled like coffee with him.

“I apologize once more for what happened last night at the bar,” Spock said after a tentative sip of his tea. “I am not usually so reckless and irresponsible.”

“Nah, don’t beat yourself up like that. Everyone makes mistakes.”

“I do not,” Spock said after a moment’s contemplation.

“No?” Jim gave him a strange look.

“There was lot of pressure on Vulcan not to fail.”

Jim shook his head. “Making a mistake is not a failure, Spock. Anyway, I am glad you’re feeling a little better.”

“It is a good thing it is winter break I do not have to teach a course today as I am not sure my concentration would be ideal today.”

“Understandable. You want some breakfast? I can make us some toast. I have blackberry jam if you don’t eat butter.”

“I will eat butter, but the jam does sound appealing.” Spock watched as Jim rose and went back into the kitchen. “Do you have a shift tonight at the bar?”

“No. Actually.” Jim paused, shrugged. “To be honest I’m growing a bit bored there. I’m thinking of quitting.”

Spock perked up. “I think that would be wise.”

Jim laughed. “Why is that?”

“Well.” Spock felt himself blush. “Just…then you would not be required to wear the uniform.”

“I thought you liked it.” Jim winked.

“I…do. Though it is shameful to say so. You should not be objectified in such a manner. But I do not like others ogling you in it.” Spock paused. “If I am allowed to say so.”

“You are. And sure it’s not ideal. But I did get some decent tips.”

“Are your intentions to see your mother and family for the holidays after all?”

“I wouldn’t go that far. I mean I feel a little bad for saying no, but I really didn’t want to travel, and she has my brother and his brood there. Right now, what I want to do, is get to know you better, Spock. In fact, I think I want to get to know you really really well.”

Jim brought over toast, smeared with jam, and more tea for Spock.

Spock picked up a slice and took a bite. “The jam is very good.”

Jim smiled. “I made it myself.”

Spock exhaled. “I may never leave.” He was joking of course. Sort of.

“I’m not kicking you out anytime soon. But I do need to go to the store for some stuff if you want to stay and if you want to come with me.”

“I will come with you.” Spock paused and took a chance. “And stay.”

“God, I’m tired. That mission was a bitch.” Jim yawned as he stepped away from the biobed where Scotty was unconscious. Bones had said he would be okay.

Bones followed him to the doors exiting the medbay.

“You should get some rest. You look like you’ve been kicked one too many times.”

“Nothing serious, though, right?”

Bones nodded. “Nothing broken. Just a few contusions. Surprised Spock didn’t protect you from damage.”

“Nah, Uhura was there, he was more concerned over her. I had security.”

They stepped out into the corridor.

“You and me? Drinks?” Jim suggested.

Bones glanced past him. “Nah, I have patients. And looks like maybe someone’s waiting for you.”

Jim turned around and sure enough standing a few feet away stood Spock, hands clenched behind his back.

“Oh. Hi. Something you wanted, Spock?”

“Indeed. Come with me, Captain.”

Jim went to say something to Bones but his friend had already disappeared back into the medbay.

Jim walked over to Spock. “What’s up?”

“I’m escorting you to your quarters.”

“I should be going to the bridge.”

“Lieutenant Sulu has it under control for now and you require rest.”

He sighed. “Can’t really argue with you. Too tired.”

When they reached his quarters, Jim expected Spock to say goodbye there but to his surprise, Spock entered with him.

“Still something on your mind?” Jim asked, confused. “How’s Uhura?”

“She is fine, she suffered no injuries.”

Jim nodded. “That’s good.” He waited expectantly.

“I am going to make sure you actually get into bed to rest,” Spock explained, patiently.

Jim laughed. “Oh, come on. Why?”

Spock sighed. It was unusual, so yeah, Jim gaped a bit.

“You really are clueless.”

What?”

“I am not romantically interested in Nyota.”

“Uh. No?”

“I am romantically interested in you.”

Jim stared at him. Spock stared back.

“I would appreciate a response,” Spock finally said.

Jim blinked. “I think I’d better go to bed.”

Spock arched a brow.

To Jim’s embarrassment, Spock helped him undress and put on his pajamas, and then helped him get into bed and pulled up the covers.

When Spock turned to leave, Jim reached for his hand, grabbed and held it.

“Can you stay? I mean, you said Sulu—”

Spock sat on the edge of Jim’s bed and squeezed Jim’s hand. “I will stay.”

I’m thinking only a few more parts of this after this one. Maybe 2-3 flashes to make up the final chapter.

“I have some questions for you if you don’t mind,” Jim told Amanda later that morning as he dug into a plate of surprisingly good replicated eggs and potatoes.

They were seated at the marble dining room table in her kitchen. Spock had been summoned to speak with his father so it was just the two of them.

She smiled encouragingly as she took a bite of her blueberry scone. “Go ahead.”

“What’s it like being bonded to a Vulcan?”

“Has Spock asked you to bond with him?’

Jim laughed. “Nope. But he did take me to the ceremonial area and assured me it wasn’t intended to mean anything.”

“Ah.” She nodded. “I see.”

Jim ate another bite of potatoes. “Did you do that whole thing when you bonded with Sarek?”

“Oh, no.” She shook her head and smiled. “They were adamantly against it involving an outsider, you see. Sarek was considered a rebel when he chose to marry me. He’d been previously bonded to a Vulcan, but she died in childbirth many years ago.”

“Spock has a half-sibling?’

“Yes, although we never talk about Sybok. Let’s just say he is not close to the family. Anyway when Sarek and I decided to marry he wished for it to include a bond. The elders refused to do an official bonding ceremony with a Human involved, so Sarek bonded us himself.”

“So I’d guess Spock would run into a similar situation should he ever decide to bond with me.”

She shrugged. “Perhaps. But attitudes change all the time and elders die off and are replaced with more modern thinking Vulcans. It is hard to know for sure.”

“What’s the bond itself like? Is it painful or uncomfortable?”

“Heavens, no. Never. It’s probably not what you’re imagining. At least based on what my own hesitations were about. I feared it would be intrusive.”

“It’s not?”

“No. Most of the time it merely feels like a warm mental hug, if that makes any sense. I can get a sense of Sarek’s emotional state—”

“Wait, emotions?”

She laughed. “Of course, dear. If he’s upset, I can generally feel it. Anger. Even gladness. Those emotions, I sense those. But I don’t get random things like, ‘I’ll be home by four’.”

It was Jim’s turn to laugh. “That would be helpful.”

“Yes, it would. But it doesn’t really work that way. We can get each other’s direct thoughts only during melds, otherwise it’s just the emotional sense as I said. Or the warm hug. And none of it is painful. A meld is very personal and likely varies from bonded pair to bonded pair. It is nothing to fear.”

“Thanks, Amanda. I appreciate you answering my probably invasive questions.”

“Not at all. I suspect you will need this information yourself soon.”

“I don’t know. Like I said he hasn’t asked.”

“I know my son and he feels deeply for you, Jim. You’ll see.”

We return to the ChessMaster and Too Sexy today.

“Well, looks like I’m basically settled into your apartment now, Spock. I didn’t have a lot. Just some clothes and a few personal things. All the furniture in the dorm was Starfleet’s.”

“It certainly makes the transition easier,” Spock replied. “Doctor McCoy has supplied me with enough EpiPens to place in strategic locations throughout the apartment to ensure you safety should you experience another allergic reaction to something.”

Jim snorted. “He overreacts. I doubt I’ll run across, uh, Frieresty Weed anytime soon.”

Spock shrugged slightly. “Since you are likely to accompany me to Vulcan later in this month, it is actually possible you will encounter it again. I am considering having Mother prearrange replicators there to make sure you are only given food that is known to already be acceptable to you.”

“A onetime allergy, Spock, hardly seems to warrant all this.”

“There may be other unknown allergens, Jim. You were unaware of Fieresty Weed before it affected you.”

“Yeah, okay. I can’t argue with that.”

Spock’s lips twitched. “It is good to know there is something you cannot.”

Jim tossed a throw pillow at him and then yawned. “God, I didn’t realize how tired I am. It’s been a lot these last few days.”

“Indeed,” Spock agreed. “Your hospitalization, going to Riverside, and now the move. I suggest you take a long hot shower and then dress in your pajamas. There is no need to go anywhere. I will order you some food when you are ready.”

Jim smiled. “That sounds great. Pizza maybe?”

Spock nodded. “Whatever you wish. I would like to spend the evening pampering you.”

“I would certainly like to spend the evening being pampered.” He laughed. “Happy Holidays to me.”

“And speaking of which, though we do not generally celebrate Earth holidays in my family, I am not opposed to you adorning the apartment with illogical and frivolous decorations.”

Jim hugged Spock, chuckling as he did so. “That’s me all over. Illogical and frivolous.”

“Jim—”

“I’m teasing, Spock. Let me go get that shower and then I’m all yours.”

“Mine,” Spock repeated softly. “I like the sound of that.”

Jim kissed him. “Me, too.”

Flash Fic, November 27, 2024

Jim woke up early, like he always did, and made his way downstairs. He was not at all surprised to find his mother was up and already getting ready to begin the food for Thanksgiving.

She turned to him with a smile and a mug of coffee, which he took gratefully.

“You heard me getting up?” he asked, taking a grateful sip.

“Yes, plus I know you. You never sleep long. When you were little, I can count on one hand the times you slept in and it was usually when you were sick.”

“Mm. Thanks for doing all this, Mom. I know it’s a lot of work.” He glanced at the kitchen window. “There’s that snow you were talking about.”

“Just a few flakes right now. Who wants snow before Christmas anyway?”

“What do you want me to do?”

“Would you peel potatoes?”

“Of course.” Jim reached for an apron and then a peeler and got to work.

“So.” His mom paused to flash him a smile. “Is it serious between you two?”

“Yeah, I think so. Bones keeps asking me that and for a while I said I wasn’t really ready to think along those lines, you know to label it or whatever.”

“And now?”

Jim grinned. “Now I can admit I’m in love.”

She laughed. “Have you told him?”

“Nah, not yet. But I will. I’m pretty sure he feels the same way. He’s asked me to live with him. Vulcans don’t do casual.” He frowned. “Or I don’t think they do. I don’t really know.”

“The way he looks at you? It’s not casual, Jimmy.”

He nodded. “I hear movement upstairs so I think Spock and Bones are about to join us.”

“Great, because I have warm buns in the oven for breakfast.”

“Wow, you really did get up early.”

“I wanted everything to be perfect,” she admitted.

“It will be, Mom. Just because we’re here together.”

She hugged him. “Happy Thanksgiving, honey.”

“Happy Thanksgiving, Mom.”

Jim had just selected a plate of Salisbury steak and mashed potatoes at the Academy cafeteria and was headed to a table when Bones scooted up to him to join him.

“Did you see that?”

“See what?”

Bone smirked. “Seems like Spock is back from his field trip. And he’s cozying up with Cadet Uhura.”

Jim followed his gaze to see Spock indeed at a table in the cafeteria with Uhura seated beside them.

He laughed. “So?”

Jim found them a seat at a small table fairly close to the cafeteria line. After all he might be still hungry and want something more.

As Bones sat across from him, took that opportunity to eyeball his friend’s plate to see what he’d selected for lunch. Generally Bones was one of those eat your veggies kind of guy, being a doctor after all, so Jim found he rarely picked food off the other man’s plate. Still he was curious.

“At least you covered those vegetables in cheese sauce,” Jim commented. “It saved them.”

“You should eat more veggies, young man,” Bones said, waving his fork at Jim.  “You’re not worried?”

Jim cut off a piece of Salisbury steak. “About?”

“Spock and Uhura. They look a bit cozy.”

Jim laughed and shook his head. “Some people say that about us.”

“What?”

“You and me, Bonesy. That we look a little…close.”

Bones pulled back and grimaced. “That’s gross.”

“Hey!”

“I don’t mean it like that. I mean you’re like my brother from another mother. I don’t think of you like that.”

“Same. And that’s my point. What makes you think those two are any different?”

“Well. I guess you have a point. And being a Vulcan I suppose he wouldn’t be wining and dining you and her at the same time. Or I don’t think so anyway.”

“Not likely, yeah. I think they met at the chess club, too.”

She plays chess?”

“Why wouldn’t she?”

His friend shrugged. “Just thought that chess club was for dweebs like you and Spock.”

Jim rolled his eyes.

Bones chuckled. “What do you suppose her chess name is?”

“TooStuckUp?” Jim joked. “I’m totally kidding. I only met her once, I don’t really know her.”

“If she really is a close friend of Spock’s you’ll probably have to get to know her.”

“True. And same with you and Spock.”

“Grr.” Bones looked up. “Speak of the devil.”

“Jim. Doctor.”

Jim grinned. “Hiya! You’re back.”

“Indeed. I arrived back from the excursion an hour ago. I was having lunch when I noticed you over here with Doctor McCoy. Do you have other courses for the day?”

“Yep. One more after I finish here. You?”

“I am done for the day but will be taking advisory appointments at my office for an hour. If you are available after your class, perhaps you might meet me at my apartment.”

“Of course, I will. See you in a bit.”

Spock nodded at Bones. “Doctor.”

Bones scowled. “Professor.”

Jim shook his head and smiled as Spock walked away, leaving the cafeteria with Uhura who had waited for him by the exit door.

“Play nice.”

“I’m always nice. Weird she didn’t come with him to say hi.”

“Nah, I’m not bothered by it.”

“Since when did you get so mellow?” Bones demanded.

“I’m maturing.”

“In a pig’s eye.”

Our chess boys are back

Photo by Sebastian Voortman on Pexels.com

Though Spock hadn’t stated anything out loud, Jim could tell he was getting frustrated by Jim’s chess playing methods.

It was the tiny frown line between his brows and the almost subtle huff of breath each time he watched Jim lift a piece and hover it over the board.

Jim was used to surprising opponents. Back in the day, Sam ‘Sore Loser’ Kirk was legendary with the fits he threw when Jim declared “checkmate.”

Not long after he’d arrived in San Francico, Jim had left Pike himself perplexed and off-kilter as he had been forced to concede defeat.

But he could tell Spock was struggling with it more than most.

“Not used to losing huh?” Jim asked, casually lifting his iced coffee to his lips to take a drink.

Spock did not look at him. “That is hardly a conclusive outcome.”

Jim nodded even though Spock stared down at the board and wouldn’t see the movement. He couldn’t remember when he’d enjoyed a match this much. And despite what he’d told his mom it almost felt like a date.

Jim knew it wasn’t though. Spock was clearly attracted to him, but Jim had heard Vulcans stuck only with other Vulcans. Something about bonding as children or whatever. Jim didn’t know much about Spock, so for all he knew Spock could be full on Vulcan married. Too bad, because Jim would love to pursue something with Mister Tall Dark and Handsome.

Spock moved his piece. Looked up, arching a brow.

“That’s a brilliant move,” Jim said with an admiring smile.

“Indeed.”

Spock even looked a bit smug. It was quite cute really.

Jim leaned forward, moved his piece, and declared, “Checkmate.”

Spock’s gaze darted downward, then back up to Jim’s face.

“I think it’s conclusive now.”

“Not only are you too sexy, you are too smart,” Spock retorted.

Jim laughed. “Uh-huh.”

Spock pursed his lip. “I do not have time for a rematch at present. But perhaps, after dinner, we could play another match.”

“Okay. Here?”

“I was thinking my apartment after we finish eating.”

Jim blinked rapidly. “Oh.”

“Unless you have other plans?”

“I’ll break them.”

“Six-thirty then. I will send the address.”

“I’m sorry, Mom.  She went quick? That’s good.”

Jim was wandering around a quad area just off the biology building at Starfleet Academy. His mother had informed him that his great-aunt had passed away the day before. In all honesty Jim hadn’t seen her since he was a small boy and he hadn’t known her well, but his mother had. They had been close at one time.

“You need anything? Want me to come home? I could probably get a few days. Okay, just let me know.” Jim looked around the empty quad as he spoke into his communication device. “I was supposed to meet someone but looks like they aren’t coming.” He laughed. “No, not a date. This was a chess hookup with a club here at school. Okay, I’ll call you tomorrow. Bye.”

He rechecked the instructions about meeting at the quad by the biology building and the time it was supposed to be. Yep, stood up. Over a chess game.

Jim turned around and came face to face with a tall Vulcan male dressed all in black. His heart skipped a beat.

“Uh.”

An eyebrow shot up.

“Are you too sexy?”

Jim’s mouth dropped open. “What?”

The Vulcan huffed a slight breath. “Your information. Are you Toosexy?”

“Oh.” Jim licked his bottom lip and laughed. For a second he’d forgotten he’d used that silly nickname. “You must be ChessMaster.”

“Indeed. I apologize for being tardy. I was forced to deal with a classroom situation.”

Right. Now Jim knew who this was. Commander Spock. Jim had no classes with him but Bones did and complained non-stop about what an asshole the instructor was.

“Are you ready to play a match, Toosexy?”

Jim cleared his throat. “You probably should call me Jim. Jim Kirk.”

“Very well, Jim. Jim Kirk.”

Jim laughed. “You’re pretty funny.”

Spock’s lips twitched slightly. “I am quite sure no one has ever mentioned that before. My name is Spock.”

“Cool. I’m ready to trounce you.”:

“I am also quite sure that you will not.”

“Oh you are so on.” Jim started walking toward the hall that the chess club held matches in, but he stopped mid-stride when he noticed Spock…”Hey. Are you checking out my ass?”

Spock shrugged, unconcerned. “I believe that I am.”

Jim chuckled. This day was definitely starting to look up.
