Merry Christmas, Darling

Advent Day 16

It was stupid, Jim guessed, to be spending the evening of Christmas Eve wishing Spock was there with him.

Spock didn’t celebrate anything, never had, and Spock’s Human family had been Jewish.

Hell, even Jim and his family hadn’t been religious in any way. Back when Jim was a boy living at the farmhouse with his dad and Sam, they’d done Christmases. Well and before that, before Jim’s mom had left because she wanted more from life than being George Kirk’s wife and Sam and Jim’s Mom. Mom had been there for a few too. The live tree, the boughs of greenery and holly berries. He’d loved it, though Sam acted like it was lame. Once Jim went to stay with his mother on Tarsus IV, well there were no Christmases there and when he returned there was Starfleet and starships and Jim let his old Christmas memories go.

But then he’d retired from Starfleet, hell, for the fourth time, Jim figured, he’d go back to it. Living part of the time in San Francisco, Spock preferred it there, and part time in Riverside, where Jim preferred it, he’d had a number of Christmases with trees and wreaths and big meals of way too much food and little token gifts Spock always deemed illogical. Jim told him dozens of times that was the point.

Last Christmas had been in San Francisco and Spock had been with him. This year, though, Spock was away on Vulcan dealing with some crisis involving Sarek, nothing Jim had to be involved in, Spock assured him, and he was alone at the farmhouse instead.

He’d debated even bothering with the usual Christmas trappings. But in the end he’d gotten a tree, strung lights and put up the decorations.

Now it was Christmas Eve and he was standing before the tree by himself. He’d put on a fire and there was a casserole baking in the oven.

“Merry Christmas, Darling.”

Jim smiled faintly. There was an old song that came to mind from hundreds of years before.

“I wish I were with you.”

He should have gone to Vulcan with Spock. They didn’t do something as illogical as Christmas, of course, but he’d be with Spock.

With a sigh, Jim turned from the tree to go into the kitchen to check on his casserole. He opened the oven and bent down to take out the casserole and then remembered he had no potholders.

“Dummy,” he mumbled as he reached for the potholders. “Trying to burn yourself.”

“That would be unfortunate.”

Jim dropped the potholders and stumbled back from the oven.

“Spock?” He rubbed his eyes.

“Your eyes do not deceive you,” his husband said from the edge of the kitchen. He wore a robe similar to the one he’d worn on Earth when they went back for the whales.

Jim rushed at him and embraced him, crushing Spock to him. “It’s a Christmas miracle.”

“Hardly,” Spock said dryly. “There was nothing miraculous about it. I came on a passenger ship and then a shuttle here.”

Jim laughed and kissed him. “It’s my miracle anyway. I wished for you. How is it you’re here?”

Spock raised a brow. “As you said, you wished for me.”

“Right. But really…”

“I know how much you love this time of year and especially here. So I made the effort. I will be returning to my duties on Vulcan in a few days.”

“Perhaps I’ll come with you.”

“Perhaps you will.”

Jim took his hand. “Come, darling. Merry Christmas.”

Advent Day 9

“Did you see December?”

Spock’s ears perked up. Not literally, of course. But he guessed the two unimaginative ensigns he happened to be walking behind were discussing the Starfleet Calendar that had just come out to for next year’s use. It was a publicity recruiting tool of some sort that Spock didn’t quite understand.

They had asked various well-known Starfleet officers to participate for each month of the calendar. Spock had been asked to take part but he had, logically, declined. However, he had learned that his captain, James T. Kirk, had accepted the invitation. And he also knew that the captain had been given the month of December.

Since it was December at present, according to the old Earth calendar at any rate, which Starfleet was following for this project, he knew that it was a year before Jim’s month in the calendar. Unless, and Spock had not anticipated this, they decided to go with the 18th month calendar idea. There had been some talk that they might have so many participants that they’d have to go that route.

Spock had yet to see the calendar so he was not certain.

“Are you kidding? Not only have I seen it, but I’ve already drooled over it.”

The other ensign chuckled. “Right? I’m just gonna skip over the other eleven months and go straight to the captain.”

That confirmed for Spock that it was indeed only a twelve month calendar.

“I dunno. Commander Marcel’s pretty hot in March. I think they made her uniform even skimpier.”

“All those pictures are kinda risqué. More than I guessed they’d be. Thought they were gonna be tasteful.”

“I’ll take this one! Tasteful schmasteful.”

Spock had reached his destination, the medbay, so he went through the doors rather than pursue the ridiculous conversation between the two ensigns.

McCoy looked up from his tricorder, which he held over Nyota, who did not look at all well.

“She’ll be fine. Just a bit of sickness left over from that landing party a couple of days ago.”

Nyota smiled wanly. “Leonard says I need bedrest. Guess you’ll have to go to the holiday party without me.”

“I do not need to go.”

“But you should,” she insisted. “You can go with Jim.”

McCoy’s glance went between them, looking suspicious.

“We shall see.”

“All right, Lieutenant. Off duty for forty-eight hours. That ought to do it.”

She jumped down from the biobed.

“Nyota, if you do not need assistance getting to your quarters, I would like a moment with the doctor.”

“No, I can manage. Talk to you later? And go with the captain!”

McCoy was eyeing Spock in an assessing way. “Well?”

“Have you seen the Starfleet calendar?”

The doctor blinked in surprise, clearly not anticipating what Spock wished to discuss. “Yeah, I have. Why?”

“Do you have it?”

“The paper copy or the digital?”

Spock thought about it. “Paper.”

McCoy nodded, and walked over to another area of the medbay. He picked up the calendar and went right to December, clearly guessing now what Spock wished to know. He handed it to Spock.

There was Jim in a Santa hat and little else. He was mostly naked except for the hat and a candy-cane striped satin jock strap, leaving nothing to the the imagination, as far as Spock was concerned. He had one leg lifted higher than the other, resting on a glittery gold box tied with a ribbon to look like a Christmas package. And speaking of packages…the posture was provocative.

“This is the picture the captain submitted?”

McCoy shrugged. “I don’t think so. He submitted one where he’s wearing a suit and Santa hat with a wreath around the picture.”

“Then how did this happen?”

“Something about a prank. Some old friend of his sent that one in and the ‘Fleet liked it. Look, Spock, if you really want to know, why not go talk to Jim?”

“I intend to do just that.”

“About time,” McCoy muttered under his breath.

Spock arched a brow, but said nothing. He ripped out December’s picture from the calendar.

“Hey!”

“You still have the digital calendar,” Spock replied, as he turned and left the medbay.

****

“Uh, hi, Spock.”

Spock held up the December calendar picture.

Jim turned red and laughed. “Uh, yeah. That’s…I tried to talk them out of using that one. But Admiral Komack—”

“Doctor McCoy said it was sent in by an old friend of yours.”

Jim licked his lips and nodded. “Look, that was, that was a long time ago. You can kind of tell, you know? Look how young I was. It was just…it was a silly time, right?  I was goofing off. And anyway, I’m pretty sure some of that picture was touched up or manipulated.”

“Oh?”

“I don’t remember it looking quite like that, honestly. But Komack liked it.”

Spock exhaled. “Komack is a pervert.”

Jim laughed. “Yeah. Okay, fair point.” His smile slipped. “You aren’t mad, are you?”

“No,” Spock replied. “But I wish to check.”

Jim frowned now. “Check?”

“To see if that picture has indeed been touched up or manipulated. I wish to see for myself. CAPTAIN.”

“Spock, are you…” Out came the tongue again. “Are you really saying…”

Spock grabbed him and pulled him close. “You talk too much.”

“Spock—”

He shut Jim up. Yes, he was going to enjoy seeing if that picture was real. Either way, Spock knew, he would be…satisfied.

The Holly and the Ivy

Advent Day 2

“The holly and the ivy, when they are both full grown, of all the trees that are in the wood, the holly bears the crown,” Jim sang enthusiastically as he pinned a branch of ivy with holly berries on his apartment door.

“O, the rising of the sun, and the running of the deer, the playing of the merry organ, sweet singing in the choir, the holly bears a blossom as white as lily flower, and Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ, to be our dear savior.”

The door to the apartment next to his abruptly opened causing Jim to jump. He adjusted the giant Christmas wreath he currently wore around his neck. He’d been about to add it to his door as well.

“Do you know what time it is?” the Vulcan who lived next door to him demanded.

“Uh. No?”

“It is midnight. Five minutes past.”

“Oh.” Jim nodded, giving him a sheepish grin. “Sorry. Did I wake you?”

“I was meditating. That is until you started singing loudly from the hall.”

Jim’s smile broadened. “I’m sorry, I just got carried away. I picked up all this greenery while I was out and didn’t want to wait to put them up.”

“There may be others trying to sleep on this floor of the building,” the Vulcan pointed out.

“Yeah.” Jim licked his lips and turned back to the door to hang the wreath. He removed it from around his neck and fastened it to the tiny nail he’d placed there. He turned back toward the Vulcan, wiped his hands on the front of his jeans and held out his hand. “Jim Kirk.”

For a moment, the Vulcan stared at Jim’s hand, giving him a chance to realize Vulcans probably didn’t shake hands or anything and he started to draw his hand back when the Vulcan took his hand at last.

“Spock.”

“Spock,” Jim said, softly. Spock hadn’t yet released his hand and Jim wasn’t sure how he felt about that. There was something that felt right about their hands clasped like this and Jim couldn’t have said what. “Well, uh, I should probably go inside and stop bothering you.”

Spock said nothing, but he did look down at their still held hands.

Jim took a chance. “Unless you’d like to come in for, uh, some peppermint mochas?”

“Does that include chocolate?”

“Uh, yeah. Is that a problem?”

Spock glanced toward his own apartment door and then back at Jim. “It…does not. Let me just get my sweater and I will be over.”

Jim smiled. “Great. I’ll start the mochas.”

And Spock released Jim’s hand. Jim almost grabbed it back, but managed to control himself. As he went into his apartment he continued humming his Christmas song.

Christmas in July, Post 6.5

This is an AU where Spock joins Jim in his San Francisco high school (in this little flash, Jim lives with his mom there, rather than in Riverside, though I don’t explicitly state any of this). Just a little extra something.

“You go ask him.”

“Are you crazy? I’m not doing it.”

Heavy sigh.

“Come on, Jimmy. You’re the only one he kind of likes.”

Jim eyed the kid who’d said that. Sandy was his name. Short for Alexander.

“Oh, that guarantees my success,” Jim replied, sarcastically. “I’ll start with that. ‘oh, hey, new guy, since you almost like me, at least more than any of the rest, could you…”

“Just do it, Kirk.” It was always the girls who thought they were tough. And it was one of them that had just shoved him toward the new guy.

Jim stuck his hands in his pockets, gave one last derisive look to his so-called friends, and sauntered up to the picnic table where the new guy sat, nose in a book. A paper one.

He cleared his throat but that got him nothing.

Jim scowled in his friends direction when he heard the snicker. He sat down then across from the guy.

“So…Vulcan, huh?”

Great opening line there, Jimmy. No wonder he’s still ignoring you.

“You’re the new guy.”

Very slowly dark eyes rose up to stare at him. They made Jim shiver.

“I know who I am,” he said. “Who are you?”

So much for the theory he kind of liked Jim if he didn’t even know his name.

“Jim. Uh. Kirk.”

“Is it Jim or is it Kirk?”

“Both. Jim Kirk. Like you know, a last name. What’s yours?”

“Spock.”

“Spock what? Or, um, what Spock?”

“Just Spock.”

Jim nodded. “Like um, Cher or Charo. Like that.”

“I have no idea who they are.”

Jim laughed a little. “I don’t know them either.”

“Then why mention them?”

“They’re from, you know, like the past. Long past I just thought…well that compared to Spock. Just Spock.”

Spock stared at him.

Jim shifted. “Um, so, want to join the Glee Club?”

“The what?”

“Glee Club. We sing. We’re about to do a holiday concert.”

“Holiday.”

“Uh-huh. We’re planning on singing Hark the Herald for one.”

“I am not familiar with that.”

“Oh come on. You’ve got to know that. It’s famous. Also gonna sing Santa Claus is Coming to Town.”

Going to.”

Jim nodded.

Spock put his book down. “What I mean is, you are not speaking properly. It’s ‘going to sing Santa Claus is Coming to Town. Not gonna.”

Jim scowled. “I know proper grammar, dude.”

“It is most curious then as to why you do not use it.”

“Are you going to join the Club or not?”

Spock leaned back. “What else are you going to sing?”

“Couple other Christmas songs. And some for Hanukkah. The usual stuff you sing at these kinds of concerts. You get extra credit if you join. Don’t worry if you sing like a frog. So does Ralph and he’s still a member.”

“I do not sing like a frog.”

Jim shrugs. “I didn’t mean anything by it. Well? What do you say?”

Spock didn’t respond at first. He finally said, “And you are in this Glee Club?”

He smiled. “Yep. Glee Club President.”

“What does a Glee Club president do?”

“Ask others to join,” Jim joked.  “Well, whaddya say?”

“Since you clearly need help with your education, Jim Kirk, I will assist you with your club.”

Jim held up his hand for a high five. Spock stared at his hand.

“You’re supposed to hit me.”

“Why would I strike you?”

“Not me, dummy. My hand.”

“Isn’t it part of you?”

“Now see. I think, maybe, we can help each other out, Spock. You can teach me to speak proper grammar and I can teach you how to be a real person on Earth.”

“A real person.”

“Yep. You’re here going to school right now cause your pop’s the ambassador dude, right?”

Spock gave him a look. “I suppose the answer is affirmative.”

Jim grinned. “All right then, Spock. Stick we with me. It’s gonna be great.”

Jim turned around and gave the thumbs up to his friends.

“What is the meaning of that gesture? Is it obscene?”

He laughed. “Nah. That’s this one.” Jim showed him. “But never mind. Come on. It’s time for Jim Kirk Course One.”

“When do we rehearse the songs?”

Jim liked that Spock got up from the picnic table and followed him.

“Tomorrow afternoon. But today, you’re just going to hang out with me and benefit from the experience.”

That earned him an eyebrow raise, but Jim slung an arm around Spock’s shoulders and led him away from his group of friends.  Jim wanted Spock to himself.

“Now, the song goes, Hark the Herald Angels Sing…”

Even before he spoke, Jim knew who had found him outside on a raised deck that overlooked the sea and the Golden Gate Bridge. Jim supposed it could have been Bones, but no. Bones seemed to know instinctively when it was best to leave his friend alone.

Whereas…

“Hi, Spock.”

“You have left your own celebration.”

It sounded vaguely accusatory though Jim doubted Spock meant it that way.

“Needed some air.” Jim smiled faintly. “It’s a beautiful night and you can see a lot of stars.”

Spock watched Jim instead of the stars. Or at least Jim felt Spock’s gaze on his face.

“You are unhappy with the outcome.”

“Well.” Jim shrugged.

“Most Starfleet officers would be eager for promotion.”

“I’m not most. You know that by now.”

Spock didn’t say anything to that, but he did move his gaze to the stars. “It coincides with your birthday.”

“Yep and that’s another punch in the gut,” Jim said with a laugh.

“I recall another birthday I was there for the celebration.”

Jim nodded. “Back on Yorktown. Yeah. A lot has changed since then.”

Spock and Uhura were no longer together. Chekov had died. Jaylah was the Enterprise’s navigator now, and her captain…well, it wasn’t Jim anymore. Not now.

Everything had changed and nothing had changed.

“See that star? The really bright one?”

“Indeed.”

“I was thinking of making a wish.”

“A wish, Admiral?”

Jim winced at that. “Don’t call me that, Spock. It’s Jim.”

“Very well, Jim.”

“There’s an ancient Earth song.” Jim sang, “When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are, anything your heart desires, will come to you.”

“You have an unexpectedly pleasant voice.”

Jim laughed. “Okay, I’ll take that as a compliment.”

“Do you wish often on stars, Jim?”

“I haven’t in years. But I once did.”

“What did you wish for?”

Jim sighed and stayed quiet for a moment. He didn’t really know how it had happened but somehow the two of them had positioned themselves as they spoke so that they stood almost impossibly close. He ought to move, he guessed, but he didn’t.

“When I was a small boy, I wished that my dad would be alive. After that, when I was a bit older, I wished my mom would come home. Then I wished Frank would disappear. I wished I wasn’t hun…a bunch of things. But I stopped when I was a teenager because nothing I ever wished for came true. It’s been years since I even bothered.”

He felt Spock’s gaze again, unwavering.

“Why now then?”

“Desperation?” He laughed, but it was self-mocking. “Wanting something so much and knowing you’ll never ever have it no matter what the song says.”

“And what are you wishing for tonight, Jim?”

Jim met Spock’s unreadable gaze. “I don’t think I’m supposed to tell you.”

“Why not?”

The corner of Jim’s mouth tugged upward against his will. “Wishing etiquette?”

Spock arched a brow. “If your wishes do not come true what harm is there in telling me?”

“What harm indeed.”

“Jim?”

He sighed then, put his hand on Spock’s jaw and saw the widening of Spock’s dark eyes. The recognition there.

“Anyone ever tell you that you ask too many questions, Spock?”

Jim kissed him. There was a moment where he felt Spock’s surprise through the touch of their lips. And just when Jim wondered if Spock would pull away, Spock put a hand on Jim’s waist.

Eveningstar’s Birthday Flash (for May 10)

A little early, because her birthday is May 10th but I wanted to get it up now so she could enjoy it before her little wine tasting trip!

Photo by Karley Saagi on Pexels.com

“Stood up again,” Leonard muttered as he lifted his glass of bourbon to his lips and took a large swallow.

Last time they were supposed to meet him at a restaurant, a few months back, some crisis prevented them from showing up. And Leonard was pretty sure getting stood up by Jim for plans dated back to their Academy days. If he thought Spock would be a mature, steadying influence…

He’d at least thought on his birthday, Jim would make the effort. But nope. They were supposed to be there a half hour ago.

He finished his drink and was about to slide right off the stool he sat on so he could be on his way when suddenly the bar’s door burst open and none other than Jim came rushing in, running, literally running, to Leonard.

His face was flushed red, his blue eyes shining, his lips looking a bit puffy. He wore his dress uniform. An admiral’s one, now, though just barely. There was a bit more gray in his hair than before, but still he was in pretty good shape. More than Leonard could probably say for himself. He guessed Khan’s blood was working its magic on Jim.

“Bones! Thank God, I didn’t miss you.”

“Jim—”

Jim one armed hugged him and then kissed the top of Leonard’s head. “Happy Birthday!”

“You been drinking already?”

“What?” Jim laughed. “No, no. I’ve had nothing.”

“You seem intoxicated.” Leonard narrowed his eyes.

Jim sat down hard on the stool next to him. “Drunk on love maybe.”

“Please, it’s my birthday.  Where is Spock anyway? Thought he was coming.”

“He’s coming at a much more sedate pace, of course. I said I’d run along ahead to make sure you hadn’t left.”

“Well.” Leonard glared at him. “I’ve been waiting thirty minutes.”

“Exactly. Sorry. So Sorry.” He leaned forward, almost tumbling off the stool, as he kissed the top of Leonard’s head again. “Spock’s got your presents.”

Leonard perked up at this. “Presents?”

“Yep. It’s just some booze and stuff. You can wait to open them later.”

“You wrapped them? Why wrap booze if you were going to tell me? That’s no surprise, you know.”

“You hate surprises anyway. I told you ‘and stuff” so it’s not just booze.”

Leonard snorted. “If you haven’t already been drinking then—”

The door to the bar opened again and this time it was Spock. And he too had dressed in his dress uniform. His arms were full of brightly wrapped birthday presents.

Leonard grinned. “Ah, Jimmy, you shouldn’t have!”

“I know it. But I did.” Jim got up from the stool and rushed toward Spock, grabbing onto his arm, and dragging him the rest of the way. “Need help, honey?”

“I have it, Admiral.”

Leonard rolled his eyes. They’d been shagging for years and Spock still called him his title. Wondered if he did that while they were…nah, Leonard didn’t want to know.

Spock gazed blankly at Leonard, dumped the wrapped presents on the bar beside Leonard, and said, “Happy Birthday.”

“Thanks, Spock.”

Jim looked at Spock as though he’d hung the moon or something. He put his arm around Spock’s waist, and then looked back at Leonard.

“So, we were a little late, because…”

“You were canoodling.”

Jim laughed. “I know that’s your word for—”

“We were not,” Spock said quickly.

“Right. But we were getting married. Barnett married us in his office. His wife and daughter were our witnesses.”

“Wait. What? You got married on my birthday?”

“I had to act fast before Spock changed his mind. We’ll have like a big reception with everyone later.”

“A small one,” Spock said.

“Right,” Jim said again. “With like, I don’t know, five hundred—”

“Fifty.”

Jim shrugged. “Five hundred fifty then.”

“Jim—”

Leonard chuckled. “I can’t believe you saddled yourself to this idiot for the rest of your life.”

“Hey.” The idiot kissed his head again. Jim was very affectionate when he was happy.

Leonard got off his stool. “This calls for a dinner. For my birthday and your marriage. I’ll buy.”

“You can’t buy your own birthday dinner.”

“Watch me.”

Jim hugged him again, a full on one this time. “Thanks, Bones. I’m really happy.”

“I can tell.”

“Happy Birthday, Bones.”

Leonard gathered up his presents with Spock’s help and left the bar to go to a restaurant nearby. Happy Birthday, Eveningstar!~ I hope you enjoy your birthday trip

“So, I’ve decided to resign my commission and retire to Risa,” Jim announced to his senior officers during a briefing on the recently completed mission. He’d risen to give his speech.

“Sir?” Sulu asked, frowning.

“I know it’s a big shock, but I’ve actually been thinking about it for a while.” Jim glanced at Spock, who sat nearby, blank-faced. “Probably a good time to tell you Spock and I got married two months ago too. So he’s coming with me. As to who will be captain–”

Everyone began to talk at once, so many in fact Jim couldn’t make out who was saying what.

“I knew it! You owe me fifty credits.”

“It’s about time.”

“I thought they were never going to get around to it.”

“I thought the idiots weren’t even at the point where they realized it themselves.”

Okay, that was Bones.

Jim sat back down and glanced at Spock. His first officer was looking very concerned. Jim figured he looked the same.

“At what point do I say April Fools?”

Jim mother’s face appeared on the terminal screen in front of him.

“Uh-oh. What’s wrong?”

Jim laughed. “Nothing.”

“My baby calls me out of the blue and nothing is wrong? Sure. Where have you been hurt?”

“Nowhere. Listen, I…I started a relationship. A serious one. And I wanted you to—”

“Oh.” Her eyes widened. “Where is she? Let me meet her.”

Jim turned and reached out his hand toward Spock. “He is right here.”

Spock allowed himself to be tugged into view. “It is a pleasure to meet you.”

She grinned and leaned forward. “The pleasure is all mine.”

“This is the most beautiful baby I’ve ever seen.”

Spock tried to quell his excitement at Jim’s words. It was difficult though. Only years of training to keep emotions under wraps worked on Spock’s behalf.

“He is…adoptable.”

Wide blue eyes flew to him. Jim’s tongue poked out from between his lips.

“Do you think…?”

Spock moved closer to Jim who cradled the Vulcan baby in his arms. “I would like nothing more.

Jim nodded. “Let’s do it.”

“You are certain?”

Jim laughed. “Not remotely. Let’s do it anyway.”
