Flash Fic Fridays

Flash Fic, June 13, 2025

Well, it’s a month with Friday the 13th! Should have known!

“You know this is ridiculous. I don’t need to be carried like a…”

“A child?” Spock suggested.

Jim scowled. “I was going to say a damsel in distress.”

And he was in distress. He’d fallen down a set of stone steps and really landed hard on his twisted leg. Everything hurt.

Spock carried him to the cabin they were sharing on their shore leave. He stopped at the entrance to gain access at the door and then carried Jim inside and toward the bedroom.

“I think we should contact Doctor McCoy.”

“Nothing is broken and I don’t want to bother Bones. It’s his shore leave too.”

Spock deposited him on the bed. “You do not know if anything is broken.”

“I’m pretty sure. It would hurt a hell of a lot worse than this. And trust me, it hurts bad enough.”

Spock leaned down and studied Jim’s leg and ankle. He was wearing shorts as they’d been out exploring the planet ruins. No doubt about it his skin was scraped and his ankle and foot were throbbing.

Spock made a face, turned and walked away.

Jim sighed and closed his eyes.

A few minutes later Spock returned with a first aid kit. Silently, he began to clean up the scrapes on Jim’s leg. Then he gently bandaged Jim’s foot and ankle and handed Jim an ice pack.

“Thanks,” Jim offered though Spock would not meet his gaze. “Hey. Talk to me.”

Spock sat on the edge of the bed. “You came very close to falling off that cliff at the bottom of those stairs.”

“I know. I didn’t fall on purpose, Spock. And I didn’t go over the cliff.”

“You would not have survived such a fall.”

Jim looked down at Spock’s hands which were clenched tight together and he saw the Vulcan was shaking.

“Hey.” Jim reached for him. “I’m here. I’m okay.” He pulled him into an embrace. “I love you.”

Spock pulled back a little, blinking in surprise. “That is the first time you have said that.”

Jim smiled. “Is it? Well you’ve known it for a long time.”

“Still…it is good to hear out loud. And I love you as well.”

“I know. And I’m sorry if I have ruined our shore leave.”

“You have not ruined it. Perhaps you have changed the nature of the leave but we will still spend time together. Would you like to sit on the couch while I make us dinner?”

“I’d tell you I would help but I don’t think I can stand for long periods yet. But yes, I’d love to.”

Spock stood, scooped Jim into his arms and carried him to the living room. Jim smiled and pulled him in for a kiss.

June 06, 2025 Flash Fic

We start June’s flashes with a little melancholy.

Though the mission had been very successful, Jim found himself incredibly tired and he just wanted to go straight to his quarters and to bed.

He stiffened automatically when Bones approached.

“You need to come in and let me check you out.”

“Nothing happened, Bones. I’m fine.”

Bones shook his head. “I’ll be the judge of that.”

“I just want to go to bed.”

“This won’t take long,” his friend insisted without sympathy. He steered Jim into sickbay. “Now sit there on that biobed while I scan you.”

Jim did, mostly because he was too weary to argue. He did mutter, “No one attacked me.”

Bones ignored him again and lifted up his scanner and moved all along Jim. Eventually lowered it and declared, “You seem to be okay.”

“Told you.” He slipped off the bed.

“Come on to the mess and have dinner with me.”

“I just want to go to bed.”

“You gotta eat. Come on.”

Jim let himself be dragged to the mess room even though he wasn’t hungry. Bones ordered him pasta with vodka sauce, normally something he really liked, but he just stabbed at it and barely took a bite. It seemed like too much effort to chew.

“You’re not eating much.”

“Not that hungry.”

“Are you sure everything went all right down there?”

“Couldn’t have gone better.” Jim smiled. “Just tired, Bones.”

Bones sighed. “All right. Go on. I won’t keep you.”

Relieved, Jim got up and started to leave the mess room, but his exit was blocked by Uhura.

“Captain, do you have a moment?”

“Well, not really. I was on my way to go to bed.”

“Don’t worry, this won’t take long.”

Jim pursed his lips. “Okay, shoot.”

“I wanted to go over my report about the recommendations I made regarding communications—”

Jim’s mind wandered and he struggled to pay attention.

“Captain?”

“Whatever you want, Lieutenant. You have my permission.”

“Really?” She seemed eager, yet skeptical.

“Yeah, you’re in charge of communications, you make the decisions. Provided it doesn’t violate any Starfleet policies or regulations.”

“It doesn’t.”

“Good. Now, excuse me.”

He reached the corridor.

“Keptin—”

“Tomorrow, Pavel.”

Finally he got into the turbolift. Unfortunately it was occupied.

“I’m ready for that drink now,” Scotty told him, cheerfully.

“Drink?”

“Aye. You said you’d come have a drink with me. I’m on my way to engineering and I happen to have a bottle of scotch there. Don’t tell the captain of course,” Scotty joked.

“Scotty—”

“Just a wee one. Won’t take long.”

Jim nodded and tried not to sag against the wall of the turbolift.

He followed Scotty to Engineering.

He’d taken two sips of the scotch when his vision blurred and he would have gone down except he was suddenly held by two very strong Vulcan arms. Even though everything was blurry, he would have recognized those arms anywhere.

“Excuse us,” Spock spoke to Scotty. “The captain is going to bed.”

He could have kissed Spock and maybe he did, Jim didn’t know.

The next thing he was conscious of was being undressed and placed in bed in his quarters.

“Thanks,” he whispered.

Spock tucked him beneath the covers and then sat on the edge of the bed. “Do you need anything else, ashayam?”

“No. Just tired.”

“I know. It’s been a rough day.” Spock leaned over and brushed Jim’s hair off his forehead. “Your brother is at peace now.”

“How’d you know I was thinking of Sam?”

Spock tapped his head and Jim chuckled softly.

“Yeah. Thank you, love, for understanding.”

“I do. Go to sleep. It will be a new day tomorrow.”

Jim closed his eyes.

On a lark, I asked the AI here to create an image of Captain Kirk asleep, I am attaching it here (naturally they went with Bill although it’s almost a mix!)

Flash Fic, May 30, 2025

Jim didn’t even see her until she launched herself into his arms at high speed. For a moment she knocked him off his balance but fortunately a hand shot out behind him to rest on his back and steady him.

“Jimmy! I can’t believe it!” She shrieked in his ear. Then she put her hands on his face and kissed him hard on and long on the mouth.

He grabbed her wrists, moved her hands from his face and stepped back, breaking the kiss.

He did so with a gentle laugh as he recognized her.

“Kimberly, wow. It’s been years.”

Her long golden hair was a cascade of ringlets trailing down her back. She was beautiful. Probably more than he’d seen her last.

“First year of Academy,” she told him breezily. “I knew you’d get far.”

Jim smiled. “A little far.”

Kimberly laughed. “You’re a legend. I can’t believe I ran into you. We just have to get together for dinner.” She glanced briefly at the Vulcan by his side. “Oh. Who do we have here?”

Jim opened his mouth.

“Don’t tell me. You have to be his—”

“Husband,” Spock supplied with a raised eyebrow.

Her excited face fell. She stepped back and blinked. “His…what?”

Jim said gently, “Yes. This is Spock, my husband. And my first officer.”

“Well.” She cleared her throat. “Things have changed quite a bit, haven’t they?”

“It has been a long time. About that dinner…”

Kimberly held up her hands. “You know I’d love to, but I forgot all about…my appointment. You know how it is.”

“I certainly do.”

“Some other time. It was very nice to meet you, Spack.”

“Spock,” he corrected her, needlessly. Jim knew she couldn’t have cared less.

She took Jim’s hands in hers and squeezed. “You look great, and it was fantastic to see you. Your first officer is a very lucky man.”

“His husband,” Spock corrected her again, but she was already hurrying away. Spock stared after her, bemused.

“We, uh, dated a bit my first year at the Academy.”

Spock looked at him. “Yes.”

“She dropped out. Decided Starfleet wasn’t for her. Have no idea what she did after that.”

“And apparently you never will know as she could not get away from me fast enough,” Spock commented.

Jim chuckled. “It’s those ‘mine’ vibes you’re putting out, babe.”

“I am putting out no vibes,” Spock insisted. “As least not deliberately.”

“Mm.”

Jim began to walk toward HQ once more with Spock accompanying him.

“She clearly expected to copulate with you.”

Jim choked.

“Do you deny it?”

“I don’t know.”

“Jim.”

He shrugged. “Maybe. But she figured out that wasn’t going to happen.”

“Because I was with you.”

Jim shook his head. “Because I wouldn’t have been interested. You’ve spoiled me for anybody else and you know it.”

Spock seemed satisfied with that, so with a smile, Jim entered the doors of HQ with Spock by his side.

Flash Fic, May 23, 2025

When Jim stepped off the transporter pad and back on the Enterprise, Bones was waiting for him.

Bones, dressed just as casually as Jim was in their shore leave clothes, greeted him instantly.

“Hey Jim. I saw you were due to come back next so I waited for you. How was your shore leave?”

“Fantastic.”

“You’ll have to tell me about it. I have some gossip too.”

Jim laughed. “Gossip? I’d say I’m surprised you’d be spreading gossip but I’m not.”

“Join me for a quick coffee in the mess room?”

“Sure, I have time. Let’s do it.”

In days past, Jim might have spent shore leave with Bones, but that hadn’t happened this time.

They grabbed some coffee in the mess room and then grabbed a table. Jim had to wonder what his friend found worthy of gossiping about.

“So tell me what you did,” Bones said. “You rented a beach house, right?”

“I did.” Jim smiled. “I’m telling you, Bones. It was great. So relaxing. I swam in the ocean. Went for walks on the beach. Sat on the patio sipping tropical drinks. It had this amazing kitchen. I cooked all this food. It was so good. Then the living room had this couch that was more like a bunch of fluffy cushions and a big big screen. I watched all these old movies and stuff. Stayed up late, slept in. Never once had to hear ‘red alert, Captain’, ‘deck five’s under water, Captain’, ‘hailing frequencies open, Captain’, ‘you had a report due three days ago, Captain’. Best damn vacation ever.”

Bones chuckled. “If you say so. Sounds kind of boring if you ask me.”

“Not even a little. How about you? What did you do?”

“Well, now, one doesn’t like to kiss and tell usually.”

“But you don’t mind.”

“If you insist. I met this beautiful blonde in the tavern down by Calhoun Street.”

“What’s the difference between a bar, a pub, and a tavern?”

Bones eyed him. “Has this got a punchline?”

Jim laughed. “No, it’s a real question.”

“How the hell should I know? I’m a doctor not an expert on drinking establishments. Anyway, I spent a very nice few days in her company.”

Jim nodded and leaned back in his chair. “I did notice the hickey.”

Bones scowled and covered the spot on his neck. “Shut up.”

“What’s the gossip anyway?”

“It’s about Spock.”

Our Spock?”

“You know any other Spock? You know how he usually doesn’t go on shore leave.”

“Right. He didn’t go this time.”

“Like hell he didn’t. He not only did go but he hooked up! Sulu told me.”

“So Sulu’s in on this gossiping?”

‘Well, you know, Jim. People talk.”

“Unfortunately, yes I do. Well, anyway, if it is true, so what? Spock’s entitled to shore leave like anyone else.”

“Yeah, I guess.”

“He’s not with Uhura anymore.”

“I know. In fact, I guess Sulu said she was seen at an establishment getting very cozy with a guy and a girl!” Bones smirked.

“You’re becoming a regular busybody, Bones.”

“Pish, if you had this information…wait. Speak of the devil.”

Jim turned to see Spock approaching their table. He was already dressed once more in his uniform.

“Captain. Doctor.”

“Spock,” Bones said coolly.

Spock turned to Jim, handing him a folded tank top. “It seems that when we were packing to return to the Enterprise, I put this in my luggage.”

Jim smiled. “Totally understandable. All our stuff was mixed up.”

“”I can bring it to your quarters if you prefer.”

“Nah, I gotta go there and take a shower and get my uniform on. You’re headed for the bridge?”

“Yes.”

“I’ll see you there soon then.” Jim paused and let his smile widen. “And later of course.”

Spock nodded. “Of course. Doctor.”

When Spock had left, Jim dared a look at Bones, who looked apoplectic.

“So Spock was with you?”

“Yep.”

“And you let me go on about the gossip?”

Jim chuckled and rose from his seat. “It was very amusing, Bones. Thank you for that. See you later, I need to get ready for duty.”

He heard Bones muttering something but he was in far too good a mood to let the sourpuss spoil it.

Flash Fic, May 16, 2025

This one is short and sweet. I’m off for a long weekend this weekend (long one next weekend as well but I’ll be in town for Memorial Day). Enjoy !

As soon as Spock opened his eyes, Jim was at his side, reaching for the Vulcan’s hand.

Spock still looked half asleep, but he croaked out, “Ashayam?”

Jim smiled. “Hi, sweetheart. You’re okay.”

“You?”

“Yes. You’re the one who has still been recovering.”

Spock was silent, considering. “Then…I did not harm you during…”

“Nope. I was a little tired but otherwise fine. And now I’ve rested. It’s over.” Jim squeezed his hand. “You okay?”

“I think so. I am relieved you are unharmed.”

“You had concerns, I know.”

“All right love birds, I want Spock to rest for another night and then he can be released back to his quarters.” Bones pushed up between them. “And you skedaddle, Jim. You’re not due to be on duty until tomorrow and you can see Spock is fine.”

“At least let me kiss my husband before I go.” Jim pushed Bones out of the way, leaned down and kissed Spock’s forehead. “I’ll be back for you in the morning.”

“Go,” Bones insisted.

“Love you.”

“Go,” Bones said louder.

“Love you too, Bones.”

And when Bones started to chase after him, Jim ran away laughing.

The sequel/conclusion

“May I come in?” Spock asked.

Jim blinked, blearily, still a little groggy from having dozed off. He didn’t move.

“Jim?”

He shook his head.

“You will not allow me entry?”

“What? No. Come in. Sorry.” He stood back to allow Spock to enter.

“You were sleeping?”

“Uh.” Jim wiped his hand over his face. “Yeah.”

“Your message to me appeared to be urgent and I noted you made several attempts. I assumed whatever the situation was, it could not wait.”

Jim sighed and led Spock to sit down. “Sorry. I guess…I sorta of overreacted to being unable to reach you. I’m leaving for Riverside in the morning.”

It was Spock’s turn to look mildly confused. “Riverside?”

“It’s where I’m from.”

“Yes. But…you are quitting the Academy?”

“No.” He laughed. “Though some people might want me to. I’m going for a long weekend to see my mom. And I guess I just had something to tell you and I went a little nuts when I couldn’t reach you. I’m sorry, Spock.” Jim now felt foolish about the whole thing. Even wanting to tell his friend his true feelings. “It’s not the big deal I implied it was.”

“I see. What was it you wanted to tell me?”

“I don’t even remember now,” Jim lied, avoiding Spock’s gaze. “Sorry to make you come here in the middle of the night.”

“Very well, then I will allow you to finish your night’s rest.”

Spock rose and Jim followed him to the door.

“You…you wouldn’t want to come with me, would you?”

“With you to Riverside?” At Jim’s nod, Spock asked, “Why?”

Yeah, why?

Jim pushed Spock against the door and kissed him…hard. And then when he pulled back for a moment’s breath, he moved back in and kissed him again.

They both pulled away, breathless.

“Well?”

“Yes, I will come with you.”

“Stay?”

“Only the dorm being on fire would cause me to depart.”

Jim grinned and pulled him closer once more. “Well…then.” He kissed Spock for a long time.

Flash Fic, May 02, 2025

This is inspired by Heart’s song, Alone

Jim had left a message for Spock to get back to him, but so far, Spock had not returned to his apartment, Jim supposed, to get that message.

He didn’t really want to think Spock had received it and had chosen to ignore it.

So Jim lay in the dark on his dorm room bed unable to sleep. Thar afternoon he’d attempted to contact Spock on his communicator and it had gone unanswered.

He’d considered that unusual but then later he had spotted Spock at a café not far from the Academy campus with a group of other instructors and even a few students who acted as assistants to various instructors.   He’d been frustrated to see it but it explained why Spock had not picked up his communicator.

Jim had tried a few more times later but stopped when he thought he might appear stalkerish.

All this because he had decided to tell Spock he wanted more than friendship from him. He was in love with Spock and had been for a while. The thing was Jim hated being in love because it scared him. In the past he’d always held back some of himself so he couldn’t become emotionally involved. He’d learned his lessons at a younger age.

But then Spock came along and everything changed.

Did it matter that the very day Jim had decided to tell Spock he wasn’t available?

He finally left a note on Spock’s apartment door to contact him, but that still hadn’t happened.

And Jim was fast losing his nerve. He couldn’t shake the feeling that this was a mistake. Bones had been right, Spock was out of his league.

Well, Bones had said it the other way around, but his friend was biased and Jim knew the truth of it.

Honestly, considering their rocky start with Jim beating Spock’s test, he’d been surprised they ended up friends.

There had been rumors that Uhura wanted Spock to be in a relationship with her, but Jim hadn’t seen any indication that Spock had been amenable to that, although he did see her in the group at the café.

In the morning, Jim was taking a shuttle to Riverside for a long weekend to visit his mother. He’d hoped to tell Spock everything before that, maybe even convince Spock to come with him to meet his mom, but that wasn’t going to happen now. And that was life, he guessed. A missed opportunity. Perhaps forever.

Jim sighed and turned over, deciding he might as well get some sleep.

He’d been dozing maybe ten minutes when there was a knock at the door. Now a little groggy, he wiped his hand over his face and stumbled to the door. He opened it.

His mouth dropped open.

“Spock?”

Flash Fic, April 25, 2025

Last Friday flash for April as we will be in May next Friday. Sorry for the simplicity. I’ve been fairly lazy and distracted this week. I hope you enjoy anyway!

Spock rushed into the medbay, heart pounding in his side. He stopped abruptly when he spotted Jim sitting up on the edge of the biobed. Spock hurried forward.

“Jim—”

“Whabba dooba hweh.”

McCoy appeared by the bed. “Oh Spock. Hello. As you can see Jim’s face has blown up to twice normal size. His tongue too.”

“I was notified you were injured,” Spock told the captain.

“Nob awn injweee.”

Spock shook his head and looked to McCoy. “Explain.”

“Ensign Hightower offered him some dish he made from one of those plants on the planet we visited two days ago. Dummy here just took a big ol bite without thinking.”

“Ib swek mah tom ott bwt hwets.”

McCoy smirks. “It’s childish to stick your tongue out anyway.”

“You understand him?” Spock asked.

“Surprisingly. Anyway, I’m giving him injections to bring the swelling down and remove the toxins but I’ll be admitting him and keeping him overnight for observation.”

Jim’s lumpy swollen face managed to look sad and dejected. “Sowwy.”

“I am sorry you obviously are in pain and discomfort.”

“That will mostly past in an hour or so,” the doctor advised. “The worst is over. But I do want to admit him and get him to rest. You can come take him out of here in the morning.”

Spock nodded. “Very well. I will leave him in your capable hands.” He leaned over to see where he could place a quick kiss to his bondmate, saw none he really wanted to, honestly, so he reached over and stroked a finger on Jim’s normal looing hand.

“Rest well, T’hy’la.”

Jim sighed and nodded.

Spock left the medbay, thinking at least he’d be able to get caught up on some paperwork.

Flash Fic, April 18, 2025

I ran out of time or enthusiasm not sure which to get the flash I was working on done for this week, so you get a bit of Kirk family togetherness for Easter.

Happy Easter if you celebrate

Photo by George Dolgikh on Pexels.com

“All right, but there’s just no way I’m doing an Easter egg hunt at my age,” Jim told his mom as he squirted egg mixture from a tube into a cooked white for deviled eggs.

She chuckled. “Spoil sport. You know we did have one the year you turned five.”

“I don’t remember that.”

“Most of us don’t remember much at that age. Maybe something fleeting.” She paused to take a sip of her carrot cake flavored coffee.

She’d gone all out on doing Easter when she’d found out they were coming for a visit that coincided with that day. And though they’d never been particularly religious in any way, Jim wanted her to have whatever she wanted to have.

“I didn’t use real eggs. You and Sam did dye some real ones, of course, but I kept those in the fridge.  I put out the fake ones filled with goodies. Of course your brother was a little older and thought the whole thing was lame.”

“He’s the one who’s lame.”

She laughed again. “Anyway, it was fun. With me being on assignment most of the time when you kids were young, we didn’t get a lot of chances to have those moments.” Then her smile fell. “And then of course when Frank was around. That asshole didn’t want to do anything but drink.”

“And belch and swear,” Jim added. He didn’t add throw punches. He didn’t need to.

Jim had come back from Frank sending him to Tarsus IV and it was shortly after that that his mom got rid of Frank for good.

His mom held up a deviled egg. “Try it. How is it?”

Jim took a bite, chewed and swallowed. “Good. Really good. I could eat the whole batch.”

“You have to share with me. Spock won’t eat them, right?”

“Nah. More for me.”

“Well, I have other things he can eat. And I made you both Easter baskets.” She blushed a little. “For the morning.”

Jim laughed. “An Easter basket for a Vulcan? That’s hilarious. What’s it got in it?”

“Never mind. You’ll see tomorrow.”

He shook his head. “I might have to sneak a chocolate egg into his.”

“Who says there isn’t already one in there?” she asked with a mischievous twinkle in her eyes.

“Mom! I’m shocked.”

“You are not.”

“Well, not really,” he agreed. “But I could be.”

She finished filling the last egg white. “There, those are ready now to be put away until tomorrow.”

Spock appeared at the edge of the kitchen and Jim went to him.

“There you are, babe. Finished with your meditation?”

“Indeed.”

“So, let’s go watch a movie.”

His mom put away the deviled eggs. “What are we watching?”

“What do you want to watch? Not some silly fairytale.”

“No, no,” she said. “How about Predator?”

Jim laughed and hugged her. “Deal.”
