Christmas Eve

Christmas in July #4

Jim was stranded. In the snow.

Okay, maybe things weren’t that bad.  He wasn’t out freezing to death in a snow drift or anything.

He had shelter.

The Riverside farmhouse.

There was no power though. That had gone out when the blizzard started.

He had a fire in the fireplace, burning pretty good, actually, so he hadn’t lost his fire-starting skills.  Sitting close to said fire made hm feel toasty warm.

But it was Christmas Eve and he had been expected at a party across town. Of course Jim suspected that party was likely either scaled back or canceled altogether. His communicator had lost service right after he’d sent his regrets to the host.

Since he had only arrived in Riverside that morning and would be leaving again the day after Christmas, or that had been the plan, he hadn’t bothered to decorate the place for Christmas or buy any special food.

Coming here, actually, had been a spur of the moment thing. None of his family happened to be in residence. Bones had gone to Georgia to see his kid during the Academy’s winter break. He’d invited Jim but Jim hadn’t felt like intruding on a family thing. Then one of his ex-girlfriends had invited him for her Christmas Eve party and Jim thought, eh, why not.

Who knew a damn blizzard was coming?

“I did warn you the weather report was troublesome.”

Oh, Right. He wasn’t alone either.

Somehow, and Jim was now not sure exactly how it happened, he ended up inviting Spock, his Vulcan instructor at the academy for physics. He’d been pretty sure Spock would say no, after all he barely acknowledged Jim’s existence.

And yet, here Spock was, sitting beside him next to the fire.

“We don’t really get white Christmases. Snow this early is kinda rare and a blizzard even more so. Apologies to Irving Berlin but white Christmases are kind of a myth. Not impossible but not really likely.”

Spock just stared at him which made Jim realize he was babbling again. Something all his friends told him he tended to do when he was nervous. What did he have to be nervous about?

Right.

His crush was sitting very close beside him, snowed in with him, and there was no one else in the house but them.

“We could sing Christmas carols.”

“I would rather not.”

Yeah, Spock had about as much holiday spirit as Ebenezer Scrooge. Well, before he was reformed. Scrooge that is. Spock had yet to be.

“Why’d you come anyway?” Jim couldn’t help but ask.

“Because you asked me.”

“Yeah.”

Silence for a bit more then…

“Why did you ask me?”

The dreaded question.

“Well.” His face heated and not from the fire. “You know. I sorta…that is…I kind of like you.” He cleared his throat.

More silence. And for a moment Jim thought that would be the end of it. Spock wasn’t going to acknowledge what Jim just said.

Might be for the best.

“That is why I accepted.”

Jim glanced at Spock. “Because you knew I liked you?”

Spock nodded. “And I reciprocate.”

It took five whole minutes for the meaning of that to work its way through Jim’s brain. He blinked.

“Aren’t you with Uhura?”

“It seems I am with you.”

Only thirty seconds more because then he was moving closer to Spock, actually straddling the Vulcan’s lap, and grabbing his face to kiss him. And kiss him.

Many minutes later, they lay side by side in front of the still blazing fire, both of them without clothes, sated and happy. For Jim he was slightly sore, but almost pleasantly so.

“I’m glad we got snowed in,” he murmured. “Merry Christmas to me.”

Spock shook his head. “You must transfer out of my class.”

“Yeah okay. Done.” Jim looked over his Vulcan lover and kissed him again. “Come on. I’m getting cold again. Warm me up.”

“My pleasure.”

Flash Fic, December 24, 2023

There won’t be a flash tomorrow, so this counts as your Christmas Flash

“I wish Daddy was here.” Peter’s bottom lip trembled as Jim looked down at his three year old nephew. There were still tear tracks on his chubby cheeks.

“Me too, kiddo.”

In truth, Jim was on the brink of tears himself.

The last twenty-four hours had been a disaster.

Jim was currently in Riverside tasked with taking care of his three-year-old nephew while his brother Sam was on assignment for Section 31.

And Jim was waiting to see if the Enterprise would go out on a second five-year mission. If they did, would he retain the same crew, most importantly Spock. He wasn’t sure, considering Jim had confessed his romantic feelings for Spock at the end of the first mission. For the last few months of that mission, he and Spock had been engaged in a “sex for pleasure only” affair, or so they had insisted on calling it. Wasn’t supposed to involve emotion. Only for Jim, it always had.

He’d gone and cocked it up but admitting this to Spock. And Spock had left to go to New Vulcan.

So, when Sam had asked Jim about watching Peter, he had agreed.

Peter’s mom had passed after an illness.

Whatever. All of this was the lead up to the disaster of the day. There’d been a fire in the living room at the farmhouse, thanks to the Christmas tree, and though the whole house hadn’t been destroyed, the recommendation  had been that they spend the next two weeks away from the farmhouse to avoid smoke inhalation and water damage. It would take that long to make everything livable.

So here it was Christmas Eve and he and Peter were about to check into a hotel in the city proper.

Jim guessed it wasn’t the worst Christmas ever. But maybe it was close. He had no gifts for the little tyke either. They’d gone up with the Christmas tree.

After getting them settled into a hotel room that included a kitchenette, Jim asked Peter, “What would you like to eat for supper?”

“Chicken nuggets! And ice cream.”

There was a twenty-four hour café attached to the hotel, so they went there. Fortunately he was able to get the chicken nuggets and ice cream for Peter.

“Will Santa find us?” Peter asked as he dipped a nugget into ketchup.

Yuck, Jim thought.

And his heart sank. What was he supposed to tell the little guy?

He had notified Bones what happened. And Bones had offered his sympathy, but he was in Georgia with his own kin so there wasn’t much he could do.

And most stores were already closed so how was he supposed to get anything for the child?

He needed a Christmas miracle.

“Well.” Jim smiled. “How’s the chicken?”

He himself had chosen meatloaf with mashed potatoes.

“Yummy.”

“Good. As far Santa…well. I think he’ll find us eventually, but it might be hard tonight or by Christmas. It might be when we go back home.”

“Okay.” But he looked so sad and forlorn that Jim’s heart just broke.

He was a terrible uncle.

After they finished eating, Jim took Peter around the area to look at Christmas lights, which did cheer both of them up considerably.

By the time he got back to the hotel, he had to carry Peter, as the boy had fallen asleep. He was surprised to see a wreath pinned to the outside of his hotel room.

Maybe something the hotel did?

He opened the door and stepped in carrying Peter. It was then he noticed the small artificial tree next to the kitchenette. It had been decorated with hundreds of white lights and little red bows. Beside it stood a very familiar Vulcan.

“Spock?”

“Merry Christmas, Jim.”

“How—”

“Leonard contacted me. It was not easy, but I made it in time.” Spock walked over to gaze upon Jim’s zonked out nephew. “Perhaps you should put him to bed before we place the presents under the tree.”

His breath caught in his throat. “You brought presents for Peter?”

“Indeed. Isn’t that expected by a child of his age for Christmas?”

Jim nodded, suddenly feeling tears sting his eyes. “Yeah. Let me put him down.”

Jim walked over to the bed and drew back the covers, setting Peter down on the bed, and covering him. He was very happy to see the boy remained sleeping. All the better to surprise him in the morning.

Jim then turned and went back to where Spock waited. The Vulcan was holding on to a Santa sack.

“I can’t believe you did all this.”

“Clearly you were in need of assistance, Captain.”

He swallowed heavily. “Yeah, I was, but…”

Spock glanced away. “In truth, I was coming to see you anyway, so it was fortunate Leonard contacted me in time to at least save some part of your holiday.”

“You were? Why?”

Spock looked at him again. “Because I find that I too had emotional involvement.”

It was Jim who arched both brows this time. “Yeah?”

“Yes,” Spock said, softly. “I apologize for it taking me this long to realize it. And I am sorry that you had a fire at your farmhouse.”

“Yeah, it sucked.” Jim stepped closer. “But this doesn’t.”

And he kissed Spock.

****

“Santa came!” Peter squealed, running toward the tree.

Jim exchanged a look with Spock. “Yes, he did.”

Let Nothing You Dismay Chapter 24

Chapter Twenty-Four: Christmas Eve

Gad-Shen closed at noon on Christmas Eve as Spock wanted to give the staff a chance to be able to do what they wished for the holiday. It was to be closed all day for Christmas.

Spock planned to adopt the kitten for Lily and hide it until Christmas morning. This was a bit of a challenge because you couldn’t exactly wrap a kitten or expect it to be quiet while you held it in another room.

Since Spock wanted to have Christmas Eve dinner with Jim and Lily, he kept the kitten and all the stuff that went with her at his apartment over the restaurant. It would mean having to return there to fetch everything after Lily went to bed, but Jim and Spock didn’t see any other way.

So after they closed Gad-Shen, Jim went to get Lily.

Jim and Lily had decided on fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and corn bread for their dinner. He’d make a vegetarian past with Kreyla for Spock.

He gave Maggie a box of both her favorite cookies and candies and then brought Lily home.

She was bouncing with frenetic excitement. Jim wondered if he would ever get her to sleep. He dreaded the idea of her deciding she would stay up to catch a glimpse of Santa.

Still, Jim was going to treasure this.

With being accepted to the Academy for next fall, they’d be leaving Riverside. He’d probably have to sell this place. Either way, they wouldn’t have Christmas here again. Not for a long time. If ever. And not when Lily still believed in Santa Clause.

They had dinner when Spock arrived and then the three of them sat in the living room by the tree and the fire. Jim had some spiked eggnog, Lily hot chocolate with whipped cream and sprinkles, and Spock Christmas spiced tea.

Jim had Lily and him singing traditional Christmas tunes, but Spock abstained from that, though Jim thought it would have been amusing to hear Spock singing Deck the Halls.

When Lily finally began to yawn and then doze off, Jim scooped her up to take her to bed. He heard Spock make his temporary exit while he did so.

After dressing his angel in her favorite Christmas pajamas, Jim kissed her forehead, and turned off her light to go downstairs and do his Santa duties.

He filled her stocking, stopping to be amused how Lily had filled his and Spock’s. His had a candy cane sticking up from it too.

Then he put out her Santa wrapped presents, including the bike and kitchen.

Lily had made cookies for Santa so Jim ate those and drank the milk too. He saved a couple for Spock too.

When Spock returned, Jim saw that he had wrapped all the kitten’s accessories from Santa too.

It was too cute and earned him a big kiss from Jim.

“God, you’re just perfect.”

Spock quirked a brow.

“Perfect for me anyway.”

“I will definitely accept that,” Spock replied. “I am certain at some point you and I will have a disagreement and you will decide I am not perfect at all.”

Jim laughed.

“Right now we are…as they say…in the honeymoon phase.”

“Yep, you’re right. I’m just as sure you’ll figure out I’m an incredibly illogical being.”

Spock’s eyes were warm. “I have already discovered that.”

Jim laughed again and kissed him. “Okay, well, I’m almost as anxious for morning as Lily no doubt is. This has turned out to be such a great time.”

“And you didn’t think it would be.”

“This has been a bad year,” Jim admitted. “Mom losing her battle with cancer. Me losing my job. I’ve always tried to keep a positive attitude. I don’t believe in no win scenarios, you know? But lately? That’s been challenged. Seeing your help wanted sign? That’s when everything changed. For the better.”

“For me as well. I believe we were drawn to each other, like I said. As we are T’hy’la. And some day, when we are both ready, I would like us to formally bond.”

Jim smiled and kissed him. “You’re definitely the best Christmas gift I’ve ever gotten.”
