Christmas in July #6

This one ended up being a whole thing and took some weird twists and became rather angsty. It may end up being a larger fic come December at Christmas proper. We will see. I am thinking there’s more to tell here that I can’t get into dealing with just yet. But then again, maybe I should just leave it alone!

“Boy, it’s really coming down out there.”

Jim nodded absently at his friend’s words. They were said with a false, forced cheer that he mostly appreciated.

He scooped another spoonful of eggnog ice cream, not bothering to glance toward the window of his hospital room where Bones stood. He could hear the pouring rain from his bed, anyway.

Next to his bed, on the end table was an arrangement of red, white, and green carnations with a glittery reindeer stick stuck in the vase with them. The card attached read ‘Get Well Soon and Merry Christmas, the Sulus.’

Bones turned back to him. “Let me see your chart again.”

Jim was in Starfleet Hospital in San Francisco. Bones wasn’t his treating physician, just his friend. But Bones was Bones and a nosey doctor he would remain.

Bones tsked. “Heart failure two days before Christmas.”

“Um hum. Drained a bunch of fluid off. It’s hereditary on Mom’s side.”

“Thought Khan’s blood would prevent that.”

Jim smiled faintly. “That was a long time ago, Bones. I’m aging at a normal Human pace. I don’t think he made me Superhuman or anything.”

“What use was he then?” Bones grumbled.

“There was no use for him. You know what. Anyway, I should get out of here before New Year’s. Gotta take pills, get regular checkups, blah blah blah.”

“Well, Admiral, you do have desk duty. So at least I don’t have to worry about you getting shot or something.”

“Small favors anyway. I feel fine, Bones. A little tired is all. And bummed I’m stuck in this hellhole over Christmas.”

“Your mom coming by later?”

“Yep. With a pre-approved mini tree for my room. She had to get my doctor’s approval, but he did.”

“What about David? Carol bringing him by?”

“Not until the day after Christmas,” Jim admitted. “I told her that they should spend Christmas in England with her husband and Carol’s mother.”

“Can’t believe he’s almost a teenager already. Hell, worse I can’t believe I’m a grampa.”

Jim smiled. “It suits you.”

Bones rolled his eyes and pulled up a chair. He brought the eggnog ice cream, also approved by Jim’s cariologist, and a white stuffed polar bear wearing a Santa hat.

He cleared his throat, so Jim knew what was to come, though he had hoped it wasn’t.

“Think he’ll show up?”

Spock, of course. Spock who had ended things with Jim six months earlier and left for New Vulcan to finally pursue Kolinahr.

They’d had a fight to end all fights. Jim wished he could say he didn’t remember what caused it, but he did. It didn’t really matter now. They were kaput. And Spock likely was knee deep in kneeling before some snooty priestess.

“No. What reason would he have?”

Bones stared at him wide-eyed. “You just had heart failure and almost died!”

Jim shook his head. “I wasn’t that in danger of dying. And I doubt anyone told him.”

“The mind thing?”

“Been dormant for months. It’s okay, Bones. We’re finished. Spock made that clear and I accepted it.” He shrugged. “I think when he’s finished with the Kolinahr, he’ll have the bond removed anyway.”

“That what he said?”

“He hasn’t said anything to me since he left, Bones. I’m just guessing is all. Fine by me. I don’t need it.”

“I should give him a piece of my mind.”

Jim chuckled and pushed away the ice cream bowl. “You need all your pieces. Let it go.”

Bones sighed. “Okay. Listen, I gotta leave for a bit, but I’ll be back later with a turkey dinner for us and probably your mom too. I’ll contact her first.”

“Bones, you don’t have to stay. It’s Christmas Eve. I know you have family.”

“You listen here, Jim, you are my family. I’ll be back.”

Jim teared up and smiled. “Okay, Bones. And you’re my family too.”

The nurse came in after Bones left to remove the ice cream bowl and offer him some tea and pills, but eventually, mercifully, Jim was left alone.

He must have dozed off some because when he woke up someone was sitting in the chair by his bed.

Jim stared. “Are you trying to give me a heart attack?”

Spock said sternly, “Not funny.”

“What are you doing here?”

“Where else would I be? My mate is in the hospital after suffering heart failure.”

“I’m not your mate anymore, Spock,” Jim reminded him.

“Our bond still exists.”

“I kind of think that’s your problem. And I’m sure you can end it.”

Spock stood and approached the bed. “I am not here to agitate you, Jim. I have come to apologize and express my deep regret for my part in our separation.”

“Aren’t regrets illogical?” Jim sighed wearily. “I don’t…you said it was over.”

“I was wrong.”

“You wanted to purge me.”

“Negative. Never you. I was…confused. I wished to purge my emotions but I was unable to do so. My love for you was too strong.”

“Spock—”

“I ask nothing from you except that I am allowed to remain by your side to watch over you.”

Jim snorted. “That seems like a lot to ask.”

Spock lowered his gaze. “I mean I know I am not worthy of a return to intimacies we once shared but—”

“I’m not really cleared for that kind of thing right now.”

Spock nodded. “But I would like to be your friend and companion for however long you will allow it.”

“This is a lot to deal with right now,” Jim admitted. “And it’s Christmas Eve. Mom is coming and Bones too. I just…you broke my heart, Spock.” He waved away Spock’s wide-eyed look. “No. You aren’t responsible for this heart condition, you know that’s not what I mean. It’s just going to be hard to get past that for a while. If I ever can.”

“Can I stay while you are in the hospital through the holidays?”

“You aren’t making it easy to send you away,” Jim said, softly. “You know I still love you. That’s never changed.”

“It has not changed for me either.”

Suddenly there was a commotion outside Jim’s room and in popped his mom wheeling in a decorated Christmas Tree on a cart and next to it was a Santa sized sack filled with brightly wrapped Christmas packages.

Her mouth formed into a “O” she stared at Spock.

“Uh. Hi Mom. Spock’s here.”

“I-I see.”

Jim glanced at Spock who stared back at him with pleading eyes. “And for now, he’s staying.”

Continuing

The thing was, from the first moment he’d spied Spock across the campus of Starfleet Academy, Jim wanted him. He’d done all he could to pursue the Vulcan, probably making an idiot of himself at least a dozen times.

Bones had assured him that he had.

But in the end it paid off and he had two dates with Spock. One was just for dinner and a movie. They’d had a great time. Or Jim thought so. Spock had agreed to see him again.

The second time, they’d had sex in Jim’s dorm. Luckly Bones was out. It had been great. Amazing. Jim was sure it was the start of something more serious. He wanted it to be.

After they were finished, Spock had hastily dressed, told Jim he really needed to go, something about someone waiting for him, he didn’t really know who or even exactly what Spock had said. But he scrambled out of Jim’s dorm like his ass was on fire, muttering that he’d contact Jim.

He hadn’t.

When Jim messaged him, he’d received no response.

Jim spotted him across the campus and knew Spock had seen him on approach. Spock had turned and gone in the other direction. It had seemed deliberate.

He told Bones all about it and Bones agreed. Spock wanted nothing more to do with Jim.

Jim had been sad and disappointed but he wasn’t about to wallow in self-pity. Spock wanted nothing more to do with him, so be it.

He’d been ghosted. Probably fair. He’d likely ghosted others.

But he simply had no idea why a Vulcan child would stare at him and even seem to be following him. Likely that was his imagination.

Right?

Another installment!

“That Vulcan kid is staring at me again.”

Bones frowned as he stabbed at his PADD like he wanted to kill it. “What Vulcan kid?”

“Well. How should I know? I told you about it.”

Bones eyed him. “You did? What? You have another Vulcan stalker?”

“Spock wasn’t stalker,” Jim protested. “Far from it.” Jim felt his face heat.

“Yeah, yeah. He ghosted you after you slept together.”

“Be quiet. It wasn’t like that.”

Bones snorted. “It was exactly like that. Who’s this kid?”

“How should I know? He seems familiar but I don’t know him. It’s not like I know a bunch of Vulcans. Only the one.”

“Who ran like hell as soon as he was done with you,” Bones said, undiplomatically. “Eh. I’d ignore the kid. Probably just nosey, like most children. He’ll get bored eventually and start staring at someone else.”

Jim sighed. ”Yeah you’re probably right. And now I really need to get to class. See you later, Bones.”

“Mm hmm.” Bones was already back to trying to kill his PADD.

New continuing story, updated at my whim

“What about that one, Father?”

Spock looked up from his study of their lunch bill when his son, Sanok, spoke.

Fortunately, Sanok wasn’t pointing at anyone inappropriately, but because he was not, he was not sure who or what his son was pointing at.

They were seated in the outdoor patio area of a café not far from Starfleet Academy where Spock taught after graduating with top honors. He was waiting for a ship assignment eventually, but for the moment he was satisfied with teaching as it allowed him time to spend with his son.

Sanok would not be allowed on the starship and would then be transferred to the care of Spock’s parents until his assignment had been concluded. Sanok’s mother had died in a lab explosion when the boy was only two. He was now six.

“That one?”

“At five o’clock on the right.”

Spock looked and nearly groaned out loud in a very unVulcan like way.

“Not this again.”

“You have expressed that your preference in a future mate should be male. Given that Grandfather chose a Human mate in Grandmother, it stands to reason that you may also have this peculiarity. It might explain the failure of your marriage to my late mother.”

Spock couldn’t exactly deny that the Human male Sanok had pointed out was indeed an extremely attractive man. One Spock was familiar with.

He could not tell Sanok how or why.

“He appears to be a cadet based on his uniform, so you would have a career interest in common.”

Since Sanok wouldn’t be able to be with Spock, he had decided it was his job to find his father a mate and companion.

“Yes, I know him.”

“You do?” Sanok asked, his tone becoming eager. “Then it will be unnecessary to arrange an accidental first meeting.”

“Completely unnecessary,” Spock agreed. “Now we should be on our way.”

“What is his name?” Sanok asked as he dutifully rose from his seat at the table.

“James Kirk.”

Flash Fic, April 16, 2024

My apologies for the delay in getting something up here. I’m feeling a little ennui these days and am fairly uninterested in writing anything, to be honest.

Anyway here it is.

When the light in his dorm room suddenly came on, Jim quickly shielded his eyes.

“Jim?”

“Yeah, can you dim that light or something?”

The light dimmed to acceptable brightness and Bones’ face suddenly appeared next to him. Fortunately his face wasn’t floating in the air and was attached to the rest of him.

“Thought you had a date with the Vulcan.”

Jim groaned. “Canceled. My head’s killing me.”

“Migraine?”

“A bitch of one.”

A moment later he felt a hypo inject into his arm.

“That should give you some relief.”

“Thanks.”

“Sorry about the date, Jim. I know you were looking forward to it.”

Jim sighed. “Yeah. I’m sure that’s over.”

Bones frowned. “Because you canceled?’

“I canceled with a headache. The lamest reason known to man.” He paused. “Or Vulcans. Everyone know when you cancel something with a vague ‘headache’ it’s just an excuse.”

Bones smirked. “Well, it wasn’t with you, though.”

He won’t know that. And his reaction wasn’t very positive.”

Bones patted his arm down lower where he didn’t just give him a shot. “Sorry, kid. Get some rest.”

And after a while of lying there, closing his eyes, Jim was able to fall asleep. He wasn’t sure for how long, but when he opened his eyes, his migraine was at least manageable. He no longer felt nauseous, and he could smell food.

Pizza.

Jim sat up.

“Bones?”

“I am not the doctor.”

His heart thudding, Jim called out, “Spock?”

And yes Spock appeared, with a plate containing two slices of cheese pizza. “I thought you might be hungry.”

“I-I am. How did you—”

“McCoy contacted me and asked me to come over.”

Jim smiled. “Wow. Thanks, Bones.”

Spock’s lips twitched. He handed the plate to Jim. “How is your head?”

“A bit better, thanks.”

“You suffer from these headaches frequently?”

“Every few months.”

Spock pulled up a chair. “Perhaps I can alleviate this one.”

“Yeah?”

“I have some Vulcan methods.”

“Wouldn’t want you to go to any trouble.”

“It’s no trouble. A simple matter of touch telepathy.”

“Will it hurt?”

“Not at all.”

Jim thought about it a moment, then nodded.

Spock’s hand came up to rest on his face and Jim wouldn’t exactly say it hurt, but he felt like a little sizzle in his skin.

Then Spock’s hand dropped away and he was staring at Jim in wonder.

Jim frowned. “That did help but I did feel something. Was that how it is supposed to feel?”

“No, it is not. You are…”

“Then what?”

“My T’hy’la.”

Flash Fic, April 11, 2024

“Hey Bones.”

McCoy looked up from a PADD he was scrutinizing.

“What are you doing?”

“Doctor stuff.”

Jim smiled faintly. “About time. Anything I need to know?”

“Nah. What’s up, Jim?” McCoy put his PADD in a nearby drawer. “You here for a reason or just showing up to annoy me?”

“I have a reason. Getting to annoy you is just an extra benefit.”

“Mmm. Coffee?”

He made his way to the replicator so Jim followed him.

“Yeah. Extra cream.”

“I know,” Bones grumbled.

“Do you know why Spock and Uhura broke up?”

“Probably seemed logical.” He handed the coffee to Jim and then made himself one. “Not really sure how she put up with him that long. I know before it was when he was going to go to the colony.”

“Right. This time, I guess, he confessed or whatever that he had feelings for someone else.”

McCoy took a swallow of coffee. “Is that right? He has feelings?”

“Bones.”

Bones shrugged. “Can’t help but wonder. They were together, what, a hundred years, and he never did fully commit.”

Jim frowned. “Maybe she didn’t either. It doesn’t have to be all Spock’s fault.”

“I suppose. Do you have a point, Jim, or did you just come here to gossip?”

Jim’s gaze narrowed. “About as much point as you do when you show up uninvited to the bridge.”

His friend smirked. “Touche. All right. Continue.”

“He said it was a he.”

“What was a he?”

“The one he has feelings for.”

Bones got a strange look then. Well, stranger then Bones usually looked, which was strange.

“Did he now? How interesting.”

Jim nodded. “I thought so.” He sipped his own coffee.  “Any ideas who? HE wouldn’t tell me. Said I could figure it out.”

“And you haven’t?”

“No. It’s driving me a bit crazy,” Jim admitted. “So? No ideas?”

“Well, I do have an idea, but I’m afraid I have to get back to work.”

“Huh? What?”

“I’m running a sickbay here, Jim.”

“I have to agree with Spock. Figure it out.”

Jim huffed. “Fine. You’re as annoying as he is.”

“I’m sure.” Bones grinned and padded Jim’s arm. “Good luck.”

Flash Fic, April 09, 2024

“Well, what do you think?”

Spock looked at Jim as though he hadn’t been paying attention to what Jim had been saying for the last ten minutes.

And honestly, Jim was sort of used to that. If Jim wasn’t talking about Starfleet related business, Spock pretty much shut him out. So much for the friendship to end all friendships.

“About what?” Spock asked, cluelessly.

Jim sighed. He probably shouldn’t even bother. Mostly he had tried to engage Spock more because his relationship with Uhura was on the outs again. Some said it was permanent this time but Jim doubted it. Uhura got made at Spock’s lack of emotional connection all the time, only to decide he was worth it for the orgasms.

Jim snorted out loud.

Okay, he didn’t know that for a fact but Jim couldn’t really guess why they were on again off again all the time. When he had briefly tried a real relationship with Carol, once it was caput, he had zero interest in going again with her. And he was pretty she concurred.

“Whether I should accept the invitation to stay at the royal palace on Cridal.”

Spock stared.

“Princess Alia extended an invitation to stay in the suite next to hers during the negotiations.”

“Why would you not accept, Captain?”

He shrugged. “Mostly because we have a sort of history and I’m thinking she wants me to stay there to—”

“You have previously engaged in coitus with her royal highness?” And here he sounded both shocked and appalled.

“Not the way I’d phrase it, but basically yes. A long time ago and it didn’t end well and I—”

“Certainly not.”

“What?”

“You should stay at the official quarters arranged for you by Starfleet for the negotiations.”

“But you just asked why I wouldn’t accept?”

Spock arched a brow. “That was before I realized that she might perceive this as an opportunity.”

“Okay, sure.” Jim nodded. “But why would that matter? I mean to you. It wouldn’t interfere with my duties if I were to—”

“I believe that it would. It is best to be neutral in this instance.”

“But Cridal isn’t part of the negotiations. They are just hosting them.”

“Nevertheless it is inappropriate to give the appearance of any impropriety.”

“Yeah, yeah.”

“You did seek my counsel,” Spock pointed out.

“I did. And I really don’t want to restart something with Alia.”

Spock frowned slightly. “Then why are you arguing with me?”

Jim opened his mouth to reply then closed it. “I don’t know. Habit, I guess. We’re like a bad rom-com. The only time it seems like we communicate is when we’re fighting.”

“I was unaware you felt that way.”

Jim shrugged. “Well. I mean, I know you don’t like me much. You never have. I’m pretty much used to it.”

“I was under the impression that we were friends.”

“Sure, we’ve talked the talk, but we’ve never really walked the walk.”

“What?”

“What I mean, Spock, is we always say we’re friends, even when I was dying, you admitted we were friends, but to be honest I’m not sure we’ve ever acted like friends. Saying the words really isn’t the same thing. I mean, I rely on you, definitely, but I never quite get beyond the fact you seem just to tolerate me. You never even told me you broke up with Uhura or why. I had to hear about it from other sources.”

Spock started to reply but Jim cut him off with a wave of his hand.

“And the very fact that you’re about to tell me that’s private and personal is exactly why I am saying we aren’t really friends. Not by my definition.”

For a moment, Spock remained silent, and Jim thought he was going to walk away in a huff or something.

But then he said, “We ended our relationship for good due to my emotional attachment to another.”

Jim frowned. “You like someone else?”

“Negative. I love someone else. Given that, Nyota was not interested in continuing our romantic connection.”

Jim sputtered, “Well, yeah I imagine not.” He thought about it. “Who is she?”

“My emotional attachment is not to a female, Jim.”

“Oh. Well.” Jim nodded. He wondered why that made the pit of his stomach ache. Well, and his heart too. A strange reaction to a friend being in love with someone else. He licked his lips. “Who then?”

Spock gave a slight huff of air that could have been a sigh. “I am quite certain if you consider the matter long enough, you will figure it out. If you will excuse me, Captain, I am due on the bridge.”

And this time Spock did walk away, leaving Jim staring at him in confusion.

April 01, 2024 Flash Fic

“Spock and I slept together last night.”

You what?”

“Shhh. Bones, stop yelling.” Jim laughed, and looked around the mess room self-consciously. No one seemed to be looking at them at the moment and he spotted Spock sitting at a table for two with Uhura across the way.

“Are you out of your mind? How?”

“How do you think? The usual way.”

Bones gave him an exasperated look. “How did it happen? Uhura’s gonna go berserk.”

Jim paused to feel a bit guilty. He cleared his throat. “We were, uh, arguing. Like always. And then suddenly he was pushing me against the wall in my quarters and—”

His friend held up a hand to stop him. “That’s definitely enough. What are you going to do now?”

Jim stared at him. “Do?”

“You slept with Spock. In case you didn’t think of it, he’s with—

“Yeah, I know. Nothing though. I’m pretty sure it was a onetime thing.”

“You’re pretty sure?”

Jim nodded. “Well, I mean, is anybody totally and completely sure of anything, Bones?” He smiled. “I really have to go. The bridge is waiting.”

And he scooted out of the mess room and to the bridge right after.

It was an hour or two later that he realized he was getting strange looks from the bridge crew. He kept feeling Uhura’s stare but every time he glanced in her direction, she was looking at her station.

And he sure didn’t miss the strange looks he was getting from Spock.

Strange.

It began to make him uncomfortable.

“Uh, I’ve got, uh, I need to take a quick break. You have the conn,” he called over his shoulder as he ran to the turbolift.

But Spock followed him right inside as the doors closed.

“Didn’t I just give you the command?”

“Mr. Scott is on the bridge, he can handle it.” Spock pulled the handle to stop the turbolift.

Jim’s eyes widened. “What—”

“Apparently we slept together,” Spock said, getting straight to the point. “Something I was, somehow, unaware of.”

Jim felt his face redden. “That was…do you know what today is, Mr. Spock?”

Spock simply stared at him, eyebrow raised.

“April Fool’s Day,” Jim supplied. “I was just playing a joke on Bones. I figured he’d get what day it was, but, um, and anyway, how did—”

“Mr. Chekov overheard.”

“Damn, nosey kid. I should have known.”

“I should warn you Nyota has filed a formal report.”

“A what?”

“A complaint with Starfleet.”

“Now wait just a minute.” Then he narrowed his eyes. “April Fools.”

“Indeed.”

“Funny. Can you restart the lift?”

“As a matter of fact, Nyota does not care at all,” Spock said then. “And for a moment thought it was true.”

“Why wouldn’t she care?”

“We are not together. We broke up some time ago but remain friends.”

Jim rolled his eyes. “Ha ha. April Fools. You’re taking the jokes a little far now, Spock. I get it and learned my lesson.”

Spock suddenly crowded him against the wall of the turbolift. “I am not speaking in jest, Captain. Perhaps later in your quarters I can convince you of my sincerity.”

Jim’s jaw dropped open but then closed when Spock leaned in, kissed him, moved back, and restarted the lift. A moment later, Spock got off, leaving Jim staring after him.
