After the Mission

Jim stopped at the nurse’s desk in the Starfleet hospital outside the area where he’d been told Jaylah had been taken.

“Hi, James Kirk. Here to see Jaylah, Ensign.”

She nodded. “She’s resting comfortably in room 424, Captain.”

Jim went down the hall, shuffling the items in his hands as he did so, until he found the correct room. There was no door on the outside, as often was the case with hospital rooms. He craned his neck around the opening to see if she was awake or had other visitors. He saw no one and Jaylah sitting up.

“James T,” she greeted him instantly as he approached her bed. She smiled. “You came.”

“Of course I did.” He thrust the bouquet of flowers in her general direction, as well as the balloon declaring “Congratulations.”

She tilted her head. “Over there, on the table, please.”

Jim saw there was a vase already on the table filled with flowers as well as a big stuffed bear wearing a blue diaper. He shook his head and added his flowers over there and set his balloon next to her bed.

“Well? Where is the little one?”

“They take him for a walk. He’ll be back in a moment.”

“Who did?”

“Commander Spock and Uhura.”

“Ah.” He nodded. “They beat me here. Last minute meetings are a pain. Bear come from them?”

“Yes.”

He sat on the edge of her bed, but other than a slightly reproachful look, Jaylah let him. “So, what’s next for you? With a baby…”

They both looked toward the door at the commotion, in the form of his first and communication’s officers returning with the baby. Of course Uhura had the little blue wrapped bundle and was cooing nonsensically at him.

“Some linguistic you are,” Jim joked.

“Captain,” Spock exclaimed. “We did not expect you to be free for some hours.”

Jim’s lips twitched. “I charmed my way out early.”

Uhura rolled her eyes at him, but stopped to show him Jaylah’s little bundle of joy. “Beautiful, isn’t he?”

“I’ll say. Give me that baby.” Jim scooped him up into his arms as Spock joined them by the bed.

“Be careful, James T.”

“I know how to handle babies,” Jim insisted.

“When have you held one that young?” Uhura asked.

Jim didn’t answer at first. He let the little boy grab his index finger. Then he said softly, “On Tarsus, when a woman there lost her life shortly after giving birth. I cared for the infant for a time.”

There was a very subdued collective gasp, but Jim didn’t miss it.

“Well, you’re just about the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. Let me give you to your beautiful mama.”

He turned to Jaylah and laid the bundle in her arms.

“Gorgeous. You’re very lucky.”

“Yes.”

Uhura cleared her throat. “What about you, Captain? Think you’ll have one of your own one day?”

He shrugged. “Anything’s possible, Lieutenant. With surrogacy, it’s definitely possible someday.” He yawned. Then he covered his face in embarrassment. “I’m so sorry.”

“You are exhausted,” Spock said, quietly. He looked to Uhura. “Nyota, I am taking him home to rest. Would you like to stay a little longer?”

“Sure. I can get back to my place on my own.”

Spock grabbed his arm.

“I’ll be by tomorrow,” Jim called out as he was shuffled out of the room. “I could have stayed,” he grumbled, even as he sagged against Spock.

“As you say, we will come tomorrow.” Spock paused. “Well?”

Jim sighed. “Yeah, I got it. The promotion.”

“So you are…”

“Fucked.”

“Jim—”

“Admiral Kirk, yeah. Can we stop and get fries on the way home?”

“Yes.”

“And a burger.”

“Yes.”

“And cookies.”

Jim smiled, leaned over and kissed Spock on the cheek. “Thanks, honey.”

It felt good to be waiting to meet with Jim, Leonard thought, as he waited in his seat at the restaurant he’d arranged to meet Jim in while Leonard was briefly in San Francisco.

He hadn’t seen Jim since the last time he’d been there, a year ago, when Leonard had left Starfleet to return to Georgia to set up private practice and finally stay grounded on Earth, where he could attempt to have a relationship with his daughter.

But he’d come to San Francisco to pick up some medical equipment he needed in person, and honestly, it had made for the perfect excuse to catch up with Jim.

Just then the door to the restaurant flew open and Jim breezed in, literally, as it was quite windy outside, and his friend came in with a gust.

Jim was laughing, his face lit up by a smile, which was great to see, honestly.

Leonard stood and motioned him over, pulling Jim into a tight hug. “God, it’s great to see you.”

“And you.”

“Sit.” Leonard gestured. “Wow, you look—”

“Fat? Ugly?” Jim joked.

“Gorgeous, actually.”

And it was true. Jim looked well rested, tanned, his blue eyes sparkling. He wore a burgundy long-sleeved T-shirt that seemed molded to him, and his slacks, black dress ones, looked pressed and expensive.

Jim laughed again, and Leonard was struck how he seemed…happy. “If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were flirting with me.”

“You do know better,” Leonard said, dryly. “I took the liberty of ordering us a bottle of wine. Should be here any time.”

“Fantastic. And speaking of, you look pretty good yourself. Leaving Starfleet agrees with you.”

“Are the rumors true?”

“True?”

At the moment the wine sommelier arrived with their bottle and for the next five minutes they were occupied with tasting and then pouring glasses for each of them.

“Back to rumors,” Leonard said. “I’ve heard through sources that they’re finally going to make you a full admiral, Commodore.”

“Oh that.”

He snorted. “You say that like it’s nothing. You’re a big deal, Jim.”

“If you say so. And yeah, I guess they are true. I’m torn. Part of me wishes I could go up again, command of a ship—”

“Ten years wasn’t enough?”

“Oh, hardly. Anyway, I guess they want old men like me to be in charge of the brash young ones.”

“Which you were at one time.”

Jim sipped his wine. “Mm. Great choice.”

“Glad you approve. Still in that apartment?”

“Sure am.”

“Big place for just you.” Leonard shook his head.

“It’s not that big and who says it’s just me?”

Leonard lowered his glass to the table. “Damn! You’re with someone?”

Jim blushed. “Well.”

“No wonder you look so damn happy!” Leonard grinned and slapped the table. “That is good news. Great news in fact. I never thought you’d settle down, Jimmy boy. When did this happen?”

“Well.”

“Is that all you can say? Within the last year, I’d guess.”

Jim shifted. “Little longer.”

Leonard frowned. “You were with her when I saw you last year?”

Jim grimaced.

Longer?”

Jim nodded.

“But…wait. You were together on the Enterprise?”

“Yeah.”

“How in the world were you with someone on the Enterprise and I didn’t know?”

Jim was bright red. “We kept it a secret, Bones. For, um, for a while, actually.”

“How long?” Leonard asked, dumbfounded.

“Last three years of the mission.”

“Plus this whole last year?”

Jim nodded.

Leonard felt hurt. He supposed he didn’t have a right, but…he did. “Why wouldn’t you tell me? Was she an ensign?”

“No. God. No. Nothing like that. For a long time, we just, it was so weird for us, everything, and I wasn’t even sure if I could get it right, Bones. And then we did and it was so private and intimate between us that for a long time neither of us wanted to spoil it.”

“Okay. Okay. Maybe. I get that. But what about the last year?”

Jim winced. “Well. Um. Actually, Bones, who I’m with, well, I included them for dinner. And uh—”

The door opened to the restaurant and Leonard turned around to look. Standing there, looking windswept, was Spock.

For a moment, Leonard’s brain didn’t catch up, and he wondered what Spock was doing there, and what a coincidence that he would be at the same restaurant he and Jim met at, but then Spock looked in their direction and walked toward them.

And it all made a strange sort of sense that he didn’t even think about before, but now, it was all he could think of. Yes. Of course. Spock. “Bones,” Jim said with a smile as he took Spock’s hand. “Spock is my husband.”

Conclusion, Bones Gets Married

And here’s the final part, thanks for indulging me. It may end up at AO3. And for photos, I just wanted to use these even though it doesn’t really go with the story HA HA. Maybe this is what they wear to the wedding when it happens. With pointy ears of course.

Jim felt full for the first time in a long time. Maybe Bones was right and he should eat more. The thing was he didn’t enjoy cooking for just himself so he spent most nights at his office at HQ late into the night until, really, he had to go home and face his empty apartment. He survived on coffee, mostly, at HQ, and when he got home he didn’t want a big meal right before bed, so he had the replicator make himself something small like toast.

He was outside by himself, in Bones’ front yard, actually. It was a little chillier than he’d thought it would be considering how warm it had been during the day. Inside he could hear Bones, Shayla, and Joanna washing dishes in the kitchen. It was too fucking cute, is what it was. Jim was glad Bones was happy. Even if it meant Bones was no longer just down the hall from him.

When they’d first returned from that last mission Bones and Shayla had an apartment in the same building, literally down the hall from his. But Bones wanted to live closer to Jo, which Jim totally didn’t blame him,  and pretty soon they were moving to Georgia.

Jim hated all the changes. And he was way lonelier than he’d thought he would be. But well, that was life wasn’t it?

He was about to turn and go back into the house when the hover car appeared just a few houses down. Jim stopped to watch it. He was more than a little surprised when a small Vulcan boy appeared. He looked to be just over three years old. He had the typical bowl cut, though his hair was not as dark as most Vulcans, and the cutest little pointed ears. He was dressed in jeans and a buttoned down shirt, rather than the Vulcan robes one might expect. He carried what appeared to be a stuffed sehlat.

Jim could not help but smile at the boy as he approached Jim with a very serious expression.

The boy held up his hand in the ta’al. “Live long and prosper.”

Jim returned the gesture. “Peace and long life.”

He crouched down to the boys level then.

“Would it be considered illogical to embrace you?” the boy asked.

Jim’s smile widened. “Absolutely not. It’s entirely logical.”

The Vulcan boy nodded and then leaned forward to wrap his small arms around Jim. Jim returned the hug tightly.

Then he pulled back. “Where is your sa-mekh?”

“He is coming.”

Jim straightened as Spock was walking from the direction the little Vulcan had come from.

“Hey,” Jim said softly.

As Spock reached him, Jim heard the front door open behind him.

“I didn’t know you were coming.”

“It was difficult to finish in time, but I did not wish to miss Leonard’s wedding,” Spock told him. He was dressed in black jeans and a black sweater.

Jim grabbed the collar of Spock’s sweater and kissed him thoroughly.

“Get a room,” Bones called from the front porch.

Jim laughed and then kissed Spock again. “God, I’ve missed you.”

“And I you, Adun.”

“If you avert your eyes, it is easier,” Jim’s son said to Bones.

“Yes, but your Dad is a noisy kisser, I can still hear him.”

“Oh, be quiet,” Jim said, throwing his arms around Spock’s neck. “So, do you have to go back?”

“Negative. Not for several months. We will return to our home in San Francisco with you.”

“How come you didn’t tell me?”

“We didn’t want to get your hopes up, Jim, in case Spock couldn’t make it happen.”

“Well, it’s a great surprise.” Jim turned from Spock and reached down to scoop up the Vulcan boy. He kissed his son soundly on the boy’s cheek, laughing when he made a face. “Now, it’s a vacation!”

Bones Gets Married, Chap 2

Chapter 2

“Jim, it’s so good to see you,” Shayla greeted him with the briefest of hugs. She was part Orion, part Human, and exotically beautiful with light green skin and raven hair. They’d met on the Enterprise during their second mission and had been together ever since. They’d never talked of marriage, though it was plain they were committed. Jim was sure Bones was firmly in the never again category.

“You look radiant as usual.” He kissed her cheek.

She patted her stomach then with a smile. “We’re expecting.”

“Fantastic. I’m ready to be an uncle again.”

“Where’s my present?” Joanna asked.

“Jo, that’s not nice,” Bones told her.

“Well.” She pouted a little. “He said he had one.”

Jim laughed. “It’s okay. Come, help me open my bag. It’s inside.” Joanna ran to his bag and opened it up, taking out the box with the “Build Your Own Enterprise” in it. She squealed with delight and then ran off with the box to get online to show her mother.

Bones smiled. “Come on outside to the grill.”

Jim followed him outside. “How long is Jo staying with you guys?”

“For the summer. Basically until it’s time for her to go back to school. She’s been a big help to Shayla.”

“God, you’re so damn domesticated.”

Bones  nodded. “Kind of sickening, I know. How are you doing, Jim?”

Jim leaned against the patio wall. “Keeping busy.”

“Working too hard, you mean.”

Jim shrugged. “What else can I do right now?”

“Not work too hard?” Bones sighed. “When was the last time you had a physical?”

“Um, I don’t know?”

“You aren’t eating right. Hell, you look like you aren’t eating at all.”

“Bones.”

Bones poked his ribs. “What are you eating?”

“I eat.”

“That’s not an answer. Is it the admiralty?”

“I am the admiralty.”

“You know what I mean. They give you about six billion different things you’re responsible for.”

“Just tactical stuff.”

“Just.” Bones rolled his eyes. “Inspections, too. How many ship inspections have you done in the last few months?”

“A few.”

Bones quirked his brow.

“Okay, a lot. But let’s talk about you. Are you ready for this shindig?”

“It’s not actually a shindig. It’s pretty small. Most of our friends are in space and she hasn’t seen her dad in over a decade. Her mom will be here though.”

“It’s going to be great, no matter how big it is.”

Bones flipped several burgers. “Jim—”

“Bones. Don’t start, all right?”

“I worry about you. In San Francisco all alone.”

“I’m fine. Really.” Jim smiled. “And that reminds me. I gotta check in. I’ll be right back.” He went inside for his PADD.

Bones Gets Married

Chapter 1

Four years had passed after the end of their last mission.

Jim had said goodbye to all of them. Most of them stayed with the Fleet. Sulu had been promoted to captain. Uhura and Scotty stayed with the Enterprise. Jaylah was working on Yorktown now. And Bones had left Starfleet. He was retiring.

He missed them.

Jim picked up the photo he had of them just before the end of that last mission. He traced his finger over each and every one of them. They’d all been smiling. Except Spock. Jim shook his head. He lingered over Bones. And then finally his first officer.

“Spock,” Jim whispered. Spock who was on New Vulcan.

With a final roll of his eyes at himself he put the picture back down on his desk in his office.

There was a tap at his office door.

“Come.”

A yeoman stepped inside. “It’s time for you to leave, Admiral.”

He nodded. “All right. Just ten minutes—”

“No, sir. You don’t have ten minutes. You have to leave now or you’ll be late for the shuttle.”

“My bag—”

“Already on the shuttle.”

Jim smiled. “Congratulations, Yeoman. You’ve thought of everything.”

She crossed her arms in front of her chest. “Apparently not since you haven’t gotten up, sir.”

“Okay, okay. Sheesh.” Jim got up and walked around the desk. He grabbed his jacket. “What’s the weather supposed to be like in Georgia?”

“Rainy, Admiral. For the next two days. But the sun is supposed to shine on Dr. McCoy’s wedding day.”

“He’ll appreciate that. Listen, I’ll contact you from the shuttle and—”

“Nope. You’re on vacation, sir.”

Jim grimaced. “When I get there then.”

“Admiral—”

“As you were, Yeoman.”

She sighed. “Yes, sir. And do try to have a good time.”

A good time. Oh, sure.

How the hell was Jim supposed to have a good time with all the work he had to do. Or really. Georgia? In the damn summer. Bones owed him for this.

He pinched the bridge of his nose. Found the message from Bones on his PADD and read it again.

I know you won’t believe me, but I’m getting married. I know. I said never. But well…It’s just a few days off. I think she didn’t want to give me a chance to change my mind! Can you come? I know most of our friends are off planet now, but, well, I’ll really like you to be there.

How could he deny that? He couldn’t.

So he was traveling to Georgia.

At least he’d get to see Bones.

****

“There he is! Uncle Jim!”

Joanna McCoy ran at Jim the moment he stepped off the shuttle ramp. She threw her little ten year old arms around him with such enthusiasm she knocked Jim back.

“Whoa, whoa.” Jim laughed. “Don’t run me over, Jo.”

“Yeah he’s got old bones, honey. Don’t want to break the admiral.”

Jim smirked at Bones. “Funny.” He ruffled Jo’s long brown hair. “Guess who brought a really smart little girl a present?”

“Yay!” She smiled brightly and linked her arm with his. “What is it?”

“You’ll see when we get to your house.” Jim glanced at Bones. “Where’s the missus?”

“Missus to be, thanks. Shayla’s back at the house. Fretting over the wedding.”

“Problems?”

“Oh, no. Everything’s fine.” Bones squeezed his arm. “Jim, about Spock, look—”

“It’s fine, Bones. Kaiidth as he would say.”

Bones nodded. “Let’s go. I’m grilling hamburgers.”

Jim grinned. “Things are looking up.”
