July 03, 2023 Flash Fic

Here we go, folks, the first Christmas in July Flash. Enjoy!

Shore leave was not something Spock had ever cared about before he entered into a relationship with Jim.

Nyota had never pushed him into taking it with her and generally he hadn’t opted to take it, preferring to stay on the ship.

And even now he wouldn’t say Jim ‘pushed’ him into it.

He had just given Spock what Spock thought of as his “gentle” smile and said, “If you want to stay on the ship, it’s okay.”

Spock did not. He found that he wanted to experience everything Jim did and so he accompanied him.

They were currently on a rather tropical planet with an area designed to mimic Earth’s tropical islands like Hawaii and Tahiti.

By the beach was a bar and restaurant Jim wanted to try, so they were headed down there. But suddenly Jim stopped by the window of a souvenir shop.

He stared at something behind a glass enclosure. He’d gone just a bit paler than his normal shade and his lips pulled down in an almost frown. His breathing had become shallower too.

“Jim?”

Spock moved closer, both because he needed to be near Jim when Jim became anxious, whether for Jim or himself, he did not know, and because he wanted to see what had caught Jim’s gaze.

Spock found himself surprised by what Jim stared at. It was a statue of a pink flamingo wearing a Santa Claus hat. The body of the flamingo was covered in pink glitter and the hat was made of fabric. He had no idea what intrigued or bothered Jim about it.

Without looking at Spock, Jim exhaled. “I need to go inside there.”

He turned and opened the door to the shop and Spock quickly followed him inside.

Jim was already at the counter speaking to an older man. “I’d like to see the flamingo, please.”

Spock moved to stand beside Jim, as close as he possibly could without overcrowding him. Jim’s gaze moved up to Spock’s face, but he said nothing.

A minute later the man returned with the statue which he put in front of Jim.

Spock noticed Jim’s hand shaking as he reached out to touch the flamingo and look at the price tag. He drew his hand back and placed it on the counter and Spock put his hand over Jim’s. The tremor stopped and Jim’s lips curved upward slightly.

“I don’t have that many credit chips with me,” Jim said, regretfully.

Spock leaned in to check out the price for himself. “Box it up, please. I have the credits.”

The man moved away with the statue and Jim turned to him.

“You didn’t have to do that.”

“Yes, I did.”

Jim said nothing further as the man came back with the boxed flamingo in a shopping bag. Spock handed over the credits and they left the shop.

“Thank you,” Jim said so softly it was like a whisper on the wind.

They continued on to the restaurant without a word between them but when they were seated under an umbrella, tropical drinks ordered, and the shop’s bag on the table, Jim finally spoke.

“When I was just a kid, my grandmother, my mom’s mother, would visit us every summer. She’d get there in late June, stay with us through August, and then leave for her own home every year. She lived in Montana during the months not with us, with one of Mom’s brothers.”

“I did not know that,” Spock said carefully. He was uncertain where Jim was going with this, but he listened intently. Getting this much insight to Jim’s prior life was a rare gift he intended to treasure.

“This was all well before Mom brought Frank into our lives. She was seeing someone but he didn’t stay with us and it never seemed like it was going anywhere. Back then Mom seemed to stay home with us more. Anyway, every July, my grandmother would do this thing with the three of us, Mom, Sam, and me. Christmas in July.”

Jim smiled faintly as they were briefly interrupted by the arrival of their drinks. The waiter went away as they said they’d order food later.

“When I was four she bought me a stuffed flamingo with a Santa hat on it.” Jim laughed. “I loved it. I carried that thing everywhere with me for like two years. It ended up getting kind of dirty I carried it around so much. I stopped one day when Sam pointed out it was lame and I was too old for it. I didn’t get rid of it or anything. Just threw it in the closet.”

“Your brother—”

“I know.” Jim sighed and took a sip through the paper straw of his drink. “A few years later, when I was ten, my grandmother didn’t arrive when she was supposed to. Come to find out that she had stopped in downtown Riverside first before coming to our farmhouse where there was a bakery that sold cookies shaped like Santa wearing a bathing suit and carrying a surfboard. For Christmas in July. We all loved those cookies. As she was crossing the street, she was hit by a car.”

Spock blinked. He reached over and put his hand on Jim’s. He could feel Jim’s sorrow like a punch to the gut. Like it had happened only yesterday.

Jim blew out a very long breath, looked out to the planet’s ocean. “She didn’t make it. The guy was drunk and never saw her. He crashed the car after he hit her. I think that was one more death Mom couldn’t handle and that’s when she decided to marry Frank and change all our lives. I don’t know. It was awful. I put that stuffed flamingo with the Santa hat in her casket when she was buried.”

“I am sorry, ashaya.”

Jim looked at him. There was a bit of a sheen to his blue eyes but Spock didn’t think he was actually crying.

“So, when I saw that,” he stopped to gesture to the shop bag, “it brought it all back to me. And I wanted it, I guess, to remember her. Not that I could really forget.”

“I understand,” Spock told him. “When my mother was destroyed with Vulcan by Nero, there was nothing left of her except for the necklace I had already given to Nyota. And while she offered to return it to me on several occasions, I had always been taught one did not take back a gift freely given.” Spock paused, turned Jim’s hand so that their palms touched. He would never get tired of touching Jim, even in such small ways. “I have no other mementos of her, and logic dictates that as a Vulcan I should not want any, yet I wish sometimes I had even something as small as a teacup.”

Jim smiled that same gentle smile. “We’re a pair, aren’t we?”

“Indeed.”

“We have our memories in our hearts and those can’t be taken away. And I think the best way to honor both of them is to make many happy memories together for years to come.” Jim leaned forward and kissed Spock softly.

For a long time, they stayed that way, palm to palm, face to face. Building those memories.

July 01, 2023 Flash

I’d forgotten it was Yaoichan’s (probably spelled that wrong) birthday today (again sorry) so I did a mini birthday flash for her. And it’s Christmas in July themed too. Since she likes the boys to have kids, well…

 “What’s that, Daddy?”

Jim stopped when his four-year-old daughter tugged on his hand to make him stop next to a store window. He wrinkled his nose. “It’s a stuffy of a reindeer.”

“Can I have it for my birthday, Daddy?”

Jim laughed. “You want a stuffed reindeer? It’s July.”

“I know that. But he’s cute. And why do they have him now?”

“A gimmick for Christmas in July sales.”

She screwed up her little face. “What’s a gimlet?”

“Er. Gimmick. You know what? Let’s go see about that reindeer.”

“And that’s how she ended up getting that stuffed reindeer for her birthday,” Jim explained to Spock later that night.

She was even now running around their house clutching the thing and making noises for it.

“She is making horse noises.”

Jim grinned. “Yep. She doesn’t know what a reindeer sounds like. I’m not sure I do either.”

“Father! Look!” She stopped next to where they stood and thrust her reindeer at Spock.

He took it from her, managed not to wince at the slobber on it from her kissing it, patted its head and handed it back to her.

“Very nice, Amanda. It is almost dinner. Perhaps you should put the reindeer in your room until after.”

“Martin.”

Spock stared down at her. “I beg your pardon?”

“His name.”

“I see.” Spock nodded. “Please take Martin to your room and put him in your reindeer pen until after dinner.”

“Okay!” And with that she dashed off.

Jim laughed and kissed him. “You two are so adorable, I can barely stand it.”

“Hmm.” Spock accepted the kiss.

“Okay, gotta go check on her birthday cake. The bakery said it would be ready by now. I’ll be right back.”

And when Jim got to the bakery he was pleased to see that they added a little reindeer made out of frosting to the top as he had asked.

Amanda would have the best Christmas in July birthday her two dads could manage.

Flash Fic, June 27, 2023

A bit of silliness. Enjoy!

“You come here often?”

Spock frowned. Straightened and turned around to face the speaker. “Every day at this time as it is my shift.”

“Oh. I see. Well, that’s cool.”

“Cool?”

“Hmm. Bet your captain is happy to have you.”

Spock arched a brow. “He does not in fact have me. I am currently on duty and it would be highly inappropriate—”

Heavy sigh.

“You suck.”

“What?”

“You. Suck. And totally not in a good way. You are the world’s worst flirter. You are actually…fired.”

Spock watched him walk away and flounce down in his captain’s chair. He saw Nyota averting her gaze but covering her mouth with her hand.

Chekov and Sulu were having such a pointed conversation that it had to be deliberate.

Spock walked over to the captain’s chair and watched the screen for a moment.

“Would you like to get laid later?”

The captain choked. “What?”

“Is that better?”

“Uh.” He blinked. “You know what? Yes. Yes that’s better. I don’t dare let you say anything else. You’re rehired. Back to your post, Commander.”

“Thank you, Captain.”

Spock definitely heard laughter when his back was turned but when he looked everyone was looking straight ahead at their console.

Except the captain who now looked back at him, smiling, his eyes shining with mirth.

And Spock decided he was clearly not as bad at flirting as he had been led to believed.

Flash Fic Revisit June 2017

I didn’t have time to write anything new for today but thought it might be fun to take a complete blast from the past. This flash is from June 2017! Enjoy

Jim sighed as he stood in front of a mirror in Bones’ office in the medbay. He pulled at his collar.

“Stop that,” Bones snapped. He came over and fixed Jim’s tie that Jim had just made askew.

“Why do I have to wear this…tuxedo,” Jim said, recalling the name.

“Because it’s a costume party with the theme 21st Century clothes and you look positively gorgeous in it.”

Jim made a face and peered at himself. “Damn Uhura and her stupid ideas anyway.”

“I heard that.” The lieutenant herself appeared in Bones’ office dressed in a sparkly sequined red dress with a handkerchief hem. She wore red hoops in her ears.

“Where’s Spock?”

“He doesn’t want to come.” She rolled her eyes. “He’s being a pain in the ass.” She whistled. “You look fantastic.”

“It’s uncomfortable.”

“Stop whining.” She took out her communicator and punched in a message.

“What are you doing?” Jim asked.

“Nothing.” She smiled and returned the communicator to a pocket. She twirled around. “You are supposed to say I look gorgeous too.”

“Doesn’t that go without saying? And anyway, if Spock gets out of it, how come I have to go?”

“You’re the captain, that’s why,” Bones said. He pulled on a T-shirt.

“What are you supposed to be?”

Bones grinned. “A beach bum.”

“You know I—”

“Captain, Nyota said you needed me for—” Spock stopped. Stared at Jim. His eyes widened.

Uhura giggled and grabbed Bones’ arm. “Come on, I don’t think you’re going to want to see this.”

“See what?” Bones asked as she dragged him away.

“Spock?” Jim asked. “What’s wrong?”

“You-you are…” Spock grabbed Jim’s biceps and pulled him flush against him.

Jim’s tongue darted out to trace his lips. “I am?”

Spock’s eyes got impossibly darker. “Not going anywhere.” His lips claimed Jim’s as he pressed the button to close the door.

Flash Fic June 21, 2023 (Plus Two)

This is the epilogue to the 5 plus 1 earlier. Enjoy!

“Happy Anniversary!” Jim called out as he exited their bathroom, dressed only in a towel and rubbing another towel over his hair to dry it.

Spock who still lounged in bed, yes quite unusual but it had been a rather tiring night, arched a brow. “It is not our anniversary. We bonded on Stardate 07.2264. We went through an Earth marriage on Stardate 09.2264. By my calculations neither anniversary applies.”

Jim smiled and went to the wardrobe closet for his uniform. “Yep, all that’s true. We should plan a big celebration for those by the way. It’s been…four…no five years now.”

Spock rose from the bed and walked over to where Jim was fussing with his clothing. “Agreed, if you wish. But I am still puzzled by your comment a moment ago.”

“It’s the fifth anniversary of when you first told me you loved me.” Jim laughed then, turning just a slight shade of pink as he pulled his command tunic over his head.  “Lame, huh?”

Spock considered. Leaned against the wall beside Jim.  “No, it is not lame.”

Jim smiled. “What are you thinking?”

“I am thinking about when I first realized my deeper emotional regard for you.”

“Yeah? When was that?”

He shook his head. “When you died in the warp core.”

Jim froze, eyes wide. “But you never said anything. Not then. Not after when I was in the hospital.”

“There is an old Earth expression that applies. I did not want to rock the boat. Nyota and I had reconciled during the mission and you seemed enamored of Carol Marcus and she with you. I had no guarantee you returned my feelings and I chose not to take that chance given what the aftermath would be if you did not.” Spock exhaled. “I apologize.”

“You know, it’s okay. I took a long time to say it after I realized too, so I guess I can’t really blame you. And we’re here now, as we are.”

“When did you realize, Jim?”

Jim made a face. “Not sure I should tell you.”

“If you wish to keep the information to yourself, I accept that.”

His husband sighed. “I realized when it hurt so bad that you filed a report behind my back and I got demoted and we weren’t going to be on the same ship. And how much it hurt that you didn’t even really consider me a friend. That’s when.”

Spock moved forward and drew Jim into his arms. “I am sorry, adun.”

“That was a long time ago. We’re good now.”

Spock nodded and held him tighter.  “Yes. I love you, Jim.”

“I love you too.”

“And…Happy Anniversary.”

Six (also known as the Plus One)

Five Times Spock told Jim he loved him and the one time Jim told Spock.

Spock woke to the sound of rain against a window.

No, that wasn’t right.

He woke to lying in a biobed in the medbay. And it wasn’t rain, but Jim’s tears.

Jim, sitting in a chair beside Spock’s bed, had his face hidden against his forearm, which he leaned against  the bed.

“Jim,” Spock rasped.

Jim’s gaze rose instantly, tears still spraying his lashes, as he jumped up from the chair.

“Spock!” Jim leaned over him and kissed him on the lips, the wetness of his tears falling on Spock as he did so. “Don’t ever do that again!”

Though he felt incredibly weak, Spock lifted his arms to wrap around Jim to hold him close against him.

“It is all right.”

Jim pulled away and wiped his eyes. “No it isn’t! You almost died.”

“I am…somewhat relieved to find that I did not.”

“Somewhat relieved?” Jim repeated, sounding scandalized. He closed his eyes. Shook his head. Opened them again. They were pooling with renewed tears which alarmed Spock.

“Jim, I—”

“I fucking love you so much,” Jim managed to get out in a choked voice. “And this isn’t funny.”

“T’hy’la, I assure you I did not mean to imply that it is.” Spock swallowed hard. His heat beat fast. “You have never said that before.”

Jim stared at him. “What?”

“That you love me.”

Jim laughed and shook his head again. “You have to be daft not to know I am crazy in love with you.”

“I am not daft. I always believed that you did, but it is very nice to hear it for certain.” Spock paused. “Even under these circumstances.”

Jim grabbed his hand. “I will say it every day, every hour if it will keep you from pulling such a dumbass move again.”

“I will always offer my life as an alternative to yours, T’hy’la.”

“What is that word anyway? You’ve said it a few times.”

“It is a Vulcan word. It is hard to explain entirely but most easily explained to you by using the term…soulmate.”

Jim smiled. “Soulmate? I like the sound of that. I gotta tell Bones you’re awake or he’ll kill me.”

“Wait.” Spock held onto Jim’s hand. “Bond with me.”

“Now?” Jim’s brows rose.

“Not this very minute but in the foreseeable future.”

“A proposal, Mister Spock?”

“Yes.”

“And that’s what I say too.” Jim pulled Spock’s hand to his and kissed the fingers. “Yes.”

Five

This one is a bit dramatic!

“Go ahead and say it. This is another fine mess you’ve gotten us into, Captain.”

Spock shot Jim a derisive look just before he crouched down and fired his phaser. “Since you said it for me, there is no need.”

Jim snorted and mumbled something that sounded very much like ‘asshole’ to Spock.

They were pinned in by a rogue group of Klingons who had been holding the natives of this planet hostage when the Enterprise had arrived. Things had taken a very nasty turn as the two security officers who had accompanied them had been slaughtered by the Klingons.

Unless they were able to reach the Enterprise soon to have himself and Jim beamed up, it didn’t look good. So far Jim had been trying for ten minutes straight with no response.

“In my defense, I had no idea it was going to be an ambush,” Jim protested. “Kirk to Enterprise. Lock on to our signals and beam us up now!”

But there was no beam up and no response.

Spock could hear the growing frustration in Jim’s voice and he knew he was going to have to act to save his captain and lover. What happened to Spock did not matter. Jim’s survival was his priority.

He assessed the situation and decided he could take out the Klingons closest to Jim readily enough but ones by him might be more challenging. Perhaps he could get the ones by Jim and Jim could get the ones by him and before more arrived, they could make it to a better location on the planet to call for help.

Spock conveyed the plan to Jim who agreed.

The first part worked out well and they managed to run from the area they were trapped in after disabling their Klingon aggressors.

Unfortunately, just as Jim pulled his communicator out to contact the Enterprise another Klingon appeared near Jim’s location ready to strike.

“No!”

Spock flung himself between Jim and the Klingon and he took a hit right above his heart just as Jim fired his phaser to drop the Klingon.

“Spock, hang on, hang on.”

Spock felt Jim’s arms cradling him. He was losing consciousness.

“Do not grieve, T’hy’la. I love you.”

J’s Birthday Flash (and Flag Day)

“I cannot see!”

The crowd was thick so Jim could understand why Vanik was too short to see the parade for J Ashton’s 150th birthday celebration.

The now legendary Starfleet Captain birthday had been June 14th. For the last sixty years there had been a parade and festival to honor Captain Ashton’s heroics. She had died at the ripe old age of ninety.

Jim considered. Vanik was just a kid but he was a Vulcan kid so he was tall and fairly heavy for his age. Still…

“All right, let me see if I can get you to my shoulders.”

“I would not want you to hurt yourself. Perhaps it would be wise and logical to wait for Uncle Spock to join us.”

Jim rolled his eyes. “The parade will be over. The effigy of Captain Ashton is supposed to be on the next float.”

“Very well. But should you become injured in the melee, Uncle Spock must care for you.”

“There will be no melee.” He bent down, grabbed Vanik, and hoisted him up on his shoulders, wincing as he did so. Okay so yeah, the kid weighed more than a Human kid that was for sure. “Can you see?”

“Yes. You are quite correct. The likeness of Captain Ashton is extraordinary.”

“Good.” He grunted.

Vanik looked down. “You are in pain.”

“No,” Jim lied. “Watch the parade.”

Only a few minutes later, Spock appeared.

“Jim?”

“He couldn’t see. And you know, he’s studying J Ashton in school.”

Spock nodded and reached up, easily taking Vanik from Jim’s shoulders. Jim winced and moved his shoulders around.

“You should have waited,” Spock said quietly.

“He shouldn’t have to miss any of it. It’s okay.”

Much later they returned to the apartment building and took a pleasantly tired Vanik back to his parents.

“You missed the parade yourself,” Spock pointed out as he began to knead Jim’s sore shoulders as Jim rested on his stomach on their bed.

“It’ll stream after my massage.” He closed his eyes.

“You are remarkable.”

Jim laughed. “Nah, he loves the story of Captain Ashton. He’s been talking about the birthday parade for days. Sore shoulders are nothing. And that’s what I have you for.”

“Indeed.”

“And perhaps for a little bit more.”

“I thought you wanted to stream the birthday parade.”

Jim flopped over onto his back and held out his arms. Spock leaned down at kissed him. And yes, the streaming could definitely wait.

Four

“I can’t believe it.”

Spock blinked. A moment ago, Jim was smiling and laughing, seated at the dining table across from Spock, those blue eyes of his sparking with mirth and affection that made Spock’s heart beat faster. Anticipation had flowed through Spock that this would be a terrific night of intimacy and perhaps even declaration he had been hoping for.

But Jim’s tone had changed to be ice cold and every trace of enjoyment slipped off his face as if it had been an illusion.

“What is it? What is wrong?”

“Franks is here.”

“Your stepfather?”

“Yes.” Jim shoots daggers toward a tall, gray-haired man sitting at a table several feet away from theirs. “Ex.”

“I assure you he will get nowhere near you ever again.”

“I’m not afraid of him.” Jim thrust aside his napkin and rose. “I have to go.”

To Spock’s shock, Jim stormed out of the restaurant.

He took care of the bill and then hurried after him. He didn’t have far too go. Jim was by the Pier, gazing out at the ocean.

Jim shook his head when Spock approached. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to ruin things for tonight.”

They were on a very brief shore leave. It was back to the Enterprise tomorrow.

“You did not.”

“Yeah I did.” Jim sighed. “Of all the damn places for him to show up. I don’t know why I still let him get to me.”

Spock pulled him close, arms wrapped around him. He could feel a lot of turmoil coming from Jim.

“What are you thinking?”

“It’s nothing.”

“Let me see.”

Spock put his hand to Jim’s face.

“What you want doesn’t matter, you are no one.”

Spock narrowed his eyes and looked at Jim’s face. “That is so far from the truth as to be truly astonishing.”

Jim’s lips curved slightly. “Yeah?”

“You are everything and I love you.”

“Well, if you of all people, love me that has to count for something,” Jim said in an overly jovial manner.

“I will gladly see that he is wiped off the planet, if that is what you desire,” Spock said, quite seriously.

Jim sighed and shook his head. “His very existence doesn’t bother me, Spock. I promise. It just…I was having a really good night, and him being there just surprised me.” He grabbed Spock’s hand. “Let’s go back to the hotel.”

“Definitely. But give me a moment to settle with the restaurant. I will be right back.”

Spock left Jim there for a moment. And of course he already had settled, with the restaurant anyway, but there was something else he needed to do.

Jim was giving him  as strange look when he reappeared. He reached up and straightened Spock’s hair. “How’d you get your hair messy?”

Spock replied, “I am sure I do not know.”
