As blue eyes opened and gazed at him with recognition, Spock found himself suddenly breathing much easier. Even more so when those eyes crinkled in the corners, indicating a smile.

“It is delightful to see you awake, Captain.”

“It is delightful to be seen.”

When he felt his hand squeezed, Spock quickly realized he still held Jim’s hand, and though he supposed he should release it, he had no desire to do so.

“Close one, huh?” Jim murmured.

“Indeed. Had Mister Sulu and his team not located you and Doctor McCoy when he did chances are significant you would not have survived.”

“Significant, huh.”

“Ninety point—”

“Yeah, I get it. Bones?”

Spock nodded. “He has recovered and has been closely involved in your care.”

Jim yawned. “Good.”

“You are still exhausted.”

Jim smiled faintly. “Yeah. Listen, Spock…”

“When you are well there is something I wish to discuss with you.”

“Okay. But listen, I sorta promised Bones if I got out of that mess I’d…” Jim paused. Licked his lips.

Spock reached for a most swab that the doctor had placed nearby by and dabbed at Jim’s dry mouth.

The eyes crinkled again. “Thanks.”

“You were saying?”

“It’s just that I…I’ve been struggling with some-some feelings for a long time and I didn’t say anything because, well, obviously you were with someone else, and even after—”

“Oh for pity’s sake” Mccoy exclaimed, suddenly appearing to interrupt them.

“Bones!”

“Hiya, kid. You feeling better?”

“Yeah, just tired. When can I—”

“Don’t even think about that right now.” Then he scanned him. “Things are looking up. I’ll have an orderly bring you something to eat in a bit.”

Jim nodded.

McCoy glanced between them. “All right, I’m going to do you both a huge favor. Spock, Jim is in love with you.”

“Bones!”

“Jim, Spock is in love with you.”

“Doctor—”

He smirked. “My work is done. I’ll be back later to check on you.”

With McCoy gone, Spock turned back to Jim, still holding his hand. He felt rather lightheaded.

“Is it true?”

Jim swallowed. “Uh-huh. You?”

“Very much so.”

“Maybe you should kiss me.”

Spock’s lips curved. “Maybe I will.”

“No funny stuff in the medbay!” McCoy shouted.

Jim laughed. It was a good sound and lightened Spock’s heart.

He kissed Jim anyway.

“Commander?”

“Yes, Mister Sulu?”

‘We’ve found them, sir. And we’re ready to transport them back to the ship.”

Spock breathed an inward sigh of relief. “Very good, Lieutenant.”

“But Commander, the captain…”

Spock’s heart froze in his side and he exchanged a quick panicked look with Nyota.

“The captain?” he made himself ask.

“He’s pretty bad, sir. We are going to have him transported directly to the medbay.”

Spock swallowed. “And the doctor?”

“His leg is broken but he’s doing all right. Barking orders.”

“Very well. Keep me posted. Spock out.”

After a few minutes, during which he gripped the arms of the captain chair almost hard enough to cause damage, Nyota walked over to him.

“Spock, go to the medbay.”

“I am on duty and—”

“We have this. I promise. I’ll contact you immediately if we need you. Go check on Jim.”

He blew out a long breath, nodded and stood.

He made it there in record time.

The captain was laid out on a biobed, pale and sweaty looking.

Spock was surprised to see that McCoy was upright rather than in a biobed himself.

“Should you not be a patient also, doctor?”

McCoy, who leaned against Jim’s bed, waved that away. “I’m fine. Nothing a regenerator can’t take care of in a few minutes.”

Since there was no one better to see to Jim’s medical care, Spock nodded, rather than arguing.

“Will he…”

“Of course he will. I’ll have him up and being a pain in the ass to both of us in no time.” He smiled a little. “But you can come closer if you want. Just don’t get in my way.”

“I will not,” Spock promised, as he did indeed come closer and took Jim’s hand.

McCoy glanced at him. ”You should tell him.”

“What?”

The doctor sighed and shook his head. “Idiots.”

“I’ve been thinking.”

A heavy sigh and then, “I’m sure I should be worried.”

Jim chuckled low, though their situation was hardly something to laugh about.

Both of them, he and Bones, were shackled to a stone wall. Bones had a broken leg, Jim had been kicked in the side. Both of their faces were battered and bruised.

They had the Klingons to thank.

“If we get out of this—”

“We will.”

Jim appreciated Bones’ attempt to be optimistic. He really did. He just didn’t think it was warranted this time.

“What were you thinking?” Bones finally asked when Jim fell silent.

“If we get out of here, I should finally tell Spock how I feel.”

“Now I know you really don’t think we’re going to be rescued.” Bones frowned. “Not in time.”

“Well. It’s pretty dire, Bones.”

Jim was fairly certain he had internal injuries from the kicks. He was having trouble breathing and was getting weaker as time passed.

Maybe Bones would be rescued in time. Jim certainly hoped so.

“Things have been dire before, Jim. It doesn’t get any worse than you being dead.”

“Yeah, I know. I’m sorry, Bones. I’m just tired.”

“You can close your eyes, Jim. I’ll keep watch over you.”

“Bones, if I don’t wake up—”

“Jim, you will. I promise.”

Jim nodded and closed his eyes.

I did sort of connect these three for Starfleet Academy Week, after all.

Next week is regular mission week.

“I’m a little nervous,” Jim admitted. He was hanging back, which was unlike him. “Do I look all right?”

Spock eyed him up and down. Jim was dressed casually in black slacks and a burgundy shirt.

“You look quite presentable.”

Jim snorted. “Presentable. Gee thanks. Not amazingly perfect?”

“You always look good,” Spock replied, confused by Jim’s slight irritation.

“Never mind. Maybe I should…”

“Jim, it will be fine. Mother is waiting at the restaurant. She is anxious to meet you.”

“Did Uhura meet her?”

Spock hesitated. But he had no reason to lie. “Yes.”

“Great. And did she like her?”

“She did. She appreciated Nyota’s intelligence and warmth.”

Jim actually laughed at that. “Warmth? Are we talking about the same girl?”

Spock gave him a look. “However, she was puzzled by my choice.”

“Puzzled?”

“Mother knew even then that I…preferred males. She had guessed.”

Jim nodded. “Gotcha. Well, just so you know, no mother has ever appreciated my intelligence and warmth.”

Spock arched a brow. “How many mothers have you met? Your own exempted, of course.”

“Well she’d be the one mother who would tout my warmth and intelligence, actually.” Jim grinned. “Yours is the first.”

Spock shook his head and took Jim’s hand in his. “You need not worry. My mother will love you. Just as I do.”

Jim’s breath caught. “You…do?”

“I know have yet to say those words to each other and if you are not ready—”

“Ready? I’m ready for anything, Professor. I love you, too. Let’s go have dinner with your mom.”

“Geez, will you cut that out!”

Spock increased his pace as he made it around the corner and to the hospital bedside of Cadet Kirk

Standing over him with a large needle in his hand was Leonard McCoy.

“Don’t be such a baby!”

Kirk was pale, his blue eyes wide with fright. Across his face were abrasions, as though his face had been scraped across asphalt.

“What are you doing to Cadet Kirk?” Spock demanded.

Kirk’s gaze few to his, startled. But he seemed to instantly calm. “Professor Spock.”

McCoy snorted. “You two aren’t actually fooling anyone least of all me.”

“What-what do you mean?”

“All this Professor that and Cadet that. Do you honestly think you’re keeping your relationship a secret? Gimme a break. And you don’t even have to anyway.”

Kirk—Jim—glanced at Spock, bit his lip.

“How are you?” Spock asked, deciding for the moment to ignore the doctor. “What happened? How serious are your injuries?”

“They’re mostly cuts and bruises,” McCoy answered him. “The idiot decided to  break up a fight and they both turned on him. I was about to give him a shot for the pain.”

Spock moved closer. “Perhaps it would have been wise not to interfere.”

Jim winced as the doctor injected the shot into his upper arm. “You think?”

“I assume he must stay overnight?”

“What? Wait, that’s not—”

McCoy glared at Jim. “Oh it’s necessary. And if you don’t keep quiet, I’ll recommend two nights.”

“Bones—”

“Wanna try for three?”

Jim closed his mouth.

“I’ll be back with something good for you to eat,” McCoy said, softening his tone.

When he’d left, Spock moved closer still and grasped Jim’s hand.

“The doctor is not wrong about our secret. I confirmed with the Board and there is nothing against our romantic relationship provided you are in none of my classes.”

Jim smiled. “That is good news.” Then he winced. “But man it hurts. I’m really sorry I won’t be able to make dinner with your mom.”

“She will understand it has to be rescheduled. What matters is your recovery.” He paused. “Who were the two who were fighting?”

“It was…” Jim narrowed his eyes. “Wait. Why do you want to know?”

“Mere curiosity.”

“Uh-huh. And you don’t intend to do something to them?”

Spock tried to look innocent. “Why would I?”

“Because they injured your beloved.” Jim waggled his eyebrows and grinned to indicate he was kidding.

“Yes, they did.” Spock was not.

“Spock—”

“I will stay with you tonight.”

“You don’t have to.”

“I do. But for the moment, I must do something. I will be back shortly.”

“Where are you going? Spock?

Spock would learn from McCoy who hurt Jim and then…speak to them. Logically of course.

Flash Fic, March 04, 2024

And so we begin Starfleet Academy week

Jim hadn’t meant to eavesdrop. Truly.

The thing was why would anyone, least of all those two have such a private conversation on an ordinary pathway on Starfleet Academy campus?

He’d halted at the sound of tears in Uhura’s voice and tried to turn around before her words reached his ears. He’d failed.

“It’s over, Spock.”

“Nyota—”

“And you could at least have the grace to be sorry about it!”

And then she made to run past Jim.

She stopped, stared, tears pooling in her eyes. Her lip curled in disdain.

“Kirk.”

That one word was filled with more venom than he’d heard in years. Oh, he’d heard worse. Just not in a long time.

She was gone before he thought what he could say or if she should say anything.

Spock stood staring after her, hands clenched behind his back, his face expressionless. He wasn’t wearing his professor uniform so clearly he was currently off-duty.

“I didn’t mean to overhear,” Jim said in a rush, less the Vulcan make his displeasure known. “I was on my way to the sociology building and this is the most direct path.”

“I am not looking to you for any blame.” His shoulders sagged slightly but otherwise he did not change his stance.

“Pretty intense?”

“You could say that.”

Jim nodded. “I’m sure, uh, when she calms down you’ll work things out.”

“We will not,” Spock said softly. “She was correct when she said it was over. Nyota wants things from our relationship I am unable to provide.”

“Oh. You didn’t tell her about—”

“Of course I did. I value honesty.”

That explained her rage and venom. And Jim really wasn’t proud of it.

They’d been arguing in a classroom, he and Spock, not at all an unusual thing, when suddenly instead of throwing insults they were kissing. A lot.

It hadn’t gone farther than that. Not because Jim hadn’t wanted it to, but because no matter what anyone said about him, he didn’t sleep with other people’s SOs.

Spock had still seen it as a betrayal of his relationship with Uhura and Jim guessed it was.

“I’m sorry then. Just like I was then. It…shouldn’t have happened, Spock. You can assure her it was all my fault.”

“Except that wouldn’t be honest. For us to engage in that sort of intimate behavior indicates a certain amount of trouble in my connection with Nyota. I recognized that and had to confess my doubts accordingly. I anticipated this outcome and you are not at fault, Cadet.”

“Jim. And I kind of am. I’m the one who you were kissing.”

Spock inclined his head.

“And the one who kissed you in the first place.”

“I remember it quite differently.”

Jim took a tentative step closer. “You do?”

Spock nodded. “I do. I initiated the kiss as I had wanted to do for some time. As I still do right now. Given that,  I could hardly–”

Jim kissed him. He grabbed the collar of Spock’s sweater and kissed him hard.

“Sorry, I just—”

Spock stepped back. “Yes, now might not be the time. I do wish to kiss you again, Jim. And frequently.”

Jim moistened his lips. “I want the same. But yeah, I get it. I have class and you just…”

“Ended my relationship.” Spock nodded. “I will contact you in a few days.”

Jim smiled and nodded and went to turn away.

Spock grabbed his wrist, turned his hand over and touched his fingers to Jim’s.

“I hope you have a good rest of your day, Jim.”

Jim squeezed Spock’s hand. “It’s going to be okay.”

“Yes, it is.”

Jim continued on to his class, feeling hope for the future.

Flash Fic, February 28, 2024

There are all kinds of love, so what I leave you with on what would normally be the last day of February is a Mother’s Love for her not so perfect sons.

Winona opened her eyes to see him standing there. Her youngest.

He was a beautiful sight, dressed casually in civilian clothes, eyes crinkling at the corners as he smiled down at her.

“Jim!”

“Hey.” His voice was cheerful enough, as was his smile, but he couldn’t hide the worry in his blue eyes. “I’d give you a great big hug but…” His gaze went to all the tubes and machines hooked up to her.

Because yes, she was in the hospital. On Earth. And that meant he wasn’t supposed to be there.

He reached for her hand. “I’ll hold your hand instead.”

“What are you doing here? You aren’t supposed to be here.”

“And yet I am.”

“Jim.” She was fretting now and she knew it. She wouldn’t cause harm or problems for her son any more than she had in the past. “Your ship.”

“Can do without me. It’s all right, Mom.”

“But surely—”

“They can for a short time. And don’t call me Shirley.”

The old corny joke they used to share made her smile at the memory, as she knew Jim intended.

“I don’t want to be any trouble.”

“Mom, you had a heart attack. Of course I’m going to be here.” Jim squeezed her hand. “I didn’t go AWOL. It’s all approved and all fine.”

She bit her lip. “It is good to see you. Seems like it’s been a very long time.”

“A few years. How do you feel?”

“Oh. A little weak. Feeling pretty old, I guess. But better with you here,” she admitted.

“See? What’s the prognosis?”

“Good. Change my diet, get more exercise, blah blah.”

“Mom.”

“I know, I know. I’ll do what they say.”

“Please.”

“Okay. Uh. There’s something else I have to tell you.”

“Uh oh. Should I be sitting down?” Jim joked.

“Maybe? Sam’s here.”

“Sam who?”

Jim.  Your brother, George Samuel.”

Jim narrowed his eyes. “What the hell is he doing here?”

She sighed. “Same as you. His mother had a heart attack.”

“Fucker,” Jim muttered. “Where is he then?”

“He went to get something to eat. But-but he’ll probably be back any minute.”

“Damn,” Jim swore.

“Jim—”

And before she could get in another word, the door of her room opened and her oldest stepped inside holding a cup of steaming liquid in his hands.

“Mom, I got you some tea…” He stopped. Stared. “Jim?”

“George Samuel.”

“Pardon me, but you are blocking the door.”

And suddenly Jim smiled, his face lighting up like the sun.

“Spock! Just shove him out of the way.”

But to her relief, her oldest son merely moved into the room and allowed Spock, dressed as casually as Jim to enter.

“Spock, how wonderful to see you,” Winona greeted him. “Jim didn’t mention you came with him.”

Spock glanced briefly at Sam before moving past him to stand beside Jim and look down upon Winona in her bed.

“Indeed. Given that you are family, I felt I had no choice but to accompany him. You are doing better?”

Winona had to admit she felt a little warm inside at Spock mentioning they were family. Yes, they were, technically, since Spock was Jim’s husband, but there had been times that Winona thought Spock didn’t really care for her.

“I am, thanks to having my three boys here.” She beamed. “But if you’re both here, who’s minding the ship?’

“Commander Scott is perfectly capable,” Spock replied.

“Spock, have you met my older son, George Samuel?”

Spock stared across the bed to where her son stood, looking uncomfortable. Judging by the cold look in his dark eyes he had definitely gotten an earful from Jim.

“I have not.”

“Hello,” Sam said. “I, uh, I wasn’t able to make it to your ceremony. Sorry.”

“Understandable given your whereabouts at the time.”

“Yeah.” Sam flushed red. “Nice to meet you…finally.”

Spock inclined his head but did not return the pleasantry, which clearly mused Jim.

Winona cleared her throat. “You brought me tea?”

“Yes.” Sam brought it over to the bed. Handed it to her. “It really is good to see you, Jim.”

“It’s definitely a surprise,” Jim allowed.

Winona huffed but she let it slide.

“This is great. I love having you all here.”

Jim leaned down and kissed her brow. “I’m glad you’re going to be okay.”

Flash Fic, February 26, 2024

“Why don’t you tell him?”

Spock shook his head. “It isn’t as easy as that. Not with the captain.”

“Tell me what?”

“Were you eavesdropping, Captain?” Nyota asked, angrily. She crossed her arms in front of her, all aggression.

Spock and Nyota were near the waterway on Yorktown having what they both thought was a private conversation.

Jim’s eyes narrowed. “Actually, no. I was looking for you, Lieutenant. Commodore Paris needs your communication expertise and I approved your assistance at the command center.”

Nyota instantly lowered her arms, glanced at Spock, and then said, “Yes, Captain. I’ll go right away.”

After she departed, Jim stepped up to where Spock stood by the waterway.

“Something you wanted to tell me?”

Spock was surprised that Jim wouldn’t look at him.

“Is something wrong, Captain?”

“Are you going to tell me you’re leaving after all?”

That did give Spock pause.

“You knew about that? Doctor McCoy?”

“Uh-huh.”

“I am not leaving.”

Jim nodded. “Then what? You and Uhura finally getting married or uh…bonded?”

“No.” Spock paused. “In fact, we are no longer romantically involved.”

Jim did look at him then and he was clearly quite surprised by this information, which made Spock hesitate even more.

“I thought after Altamid…” Jim shook his head.

“We briefly discussed the possibilities,” Spock admitted. “But the same issues we’d had that led to my choice to depart existed. Given that we remain close friends. It is…still a work in progress though.”

“I imagine.” Jim pursed his lips. “What is it then?”

“I do not wish to place undo burden—”

“Spock. What is it?”

He took a long breath and then let it out. “I have developed romantic feelings toward you.”

Jim turned away from the waterway to fully face Spock.

“Does that mean you have the hots for me?”

Spock blinked. “I…”

Jim grinned. “Don’t worry. I have the hots for you too.”

“What is that?”

Jim looked down at the cupcake with pink frosting he had been carrying to his quarters. “A little cake,”

Spock made an exasperated sound loud enough to have Jim glance at him in surprise.

“I know that it is cake. It looks homemade.”

“Yeoman Friar gave it to me. I guess she did make it.”

“Did she hand out others?”

Jim shrugged. “Not that I saw, but who knows.” He eyed Spock speculatively as they reached the door to his quarters. “You aren’t jealous, are you?”

“Am I not?”

He followed Jim inside.

“A crewmember has made you a special cupcake, which is an obvious attempt to woo you.”

Jim burst out laughing. “Come on, Spock. First you don’t even know if she baked it just for me. You are just speculating.”

“Isn’t there an old Earth saying about the way to a man is through his stomach?”

“Babe, even if she did bake it just for me  just to…” He chuckled. “Woo me. She doesn’t stand a chance.”

“Hmm.”

“Maybe she wants to woo you.”

Spock arched a brow. “She gave you the cupcake.”

“Maybe it is poisoned and I’ll keel over and then she can have you.” Jim grinned. “Man, you should see your face right now.”

“Someone trying to kill you is not amusing to me.”

“It’s not. Poisoned I mean.”

Spock pulled out his tricorder and scanned it.

“I can find no evidence of poisonous substances.”

“That’s a relief,” Jim teased. “Spock, you have nothing to worry about from anyone. Aren’t we getting married and bonded?”

“Yes.”

“A little cupcake is nothing compared to this.” He cupped Spock’s face and kissed him. Then he pulled back. “But as long as she went to the trouble of making it, I’m totally going to eat it.”

Spock sighed. “Time for me to meditate.”

“I think so.” Jim took a big bite. “Yum.”
