Flash Fic, February 28, 2024

There are all kinds of love, so what I leave you with on what would normally be the last day of February is a Mother’s Love for her not so perfect sons.

Winona opened her eyes to see him standing there. Her youngest.

He was a beautiful sight, dressed casually in civilian clothes, eyes crinkling at the corners as he smiled down at her.

“Jim!”

“Hey.” His voice was cheerful enough, as was his smile, but he couldn’t hide the worry in his blue eyes. “I’d give you a great big hug but…” His gaze went to all the tubes and machines hooked up to her.

Because yes, she was in the hospital. On Earth. And that meant he wasn’t supposed to be there.

He reached for her hand. “I’ll hold your hand instead.”

“What are you doing here? You aren’t supposed to be here.”

“And yet I am.”

“Jim.” She was fretting now and she knew it. She wouldn’t cause harm or problems for her son any more than she had in the past. “Your ship.”

“Can do without me. It’s all right, Mom.”

“But surely—”

“They can for a short time. And don’t call me Shirley.”

The old corny joke they used to share made her smile at the memory, as she knew Jim intended.

“I don’t want to be any trouble.”

“Mom, you had a heart attack. Of course I’m going to be here.” Jim squeezed her hand. “I didn’t go AWOL. It’s all approved and all fine.”

She bit her lip. “It is good to see you. Seems like it’s been a very long time.”

“A few years. How do you feel?”

“Oh. A little weak. Feeling pretty old, I guess. But better with you here,” she admitted.

“See? What’s the prognosis?”

“Good. Change my diet, get more exercise, blah blah.”

“Mom.”

“I know, I know. I’ll do what they say.”

“Please.”

“Okay. Uh. There’s something else I have to tell you.”

“Uh oh. Should I be sitting down?” Jim joked.

“Maybe? Sam’s here.”

“Sam who?”

Jim.  Your brother, George Samuel.”

Jim narrowed his eyes. “What the hell is he doing here?”

She sighed. “Same as you. His mother had a heart attack.”

“Fucker,” Jim muttered. “Where is he then?”

“He went to get something to eat. But-but he’ll probably be back any minute.”

“Damn,” Jim swore.

“Jim—”

And before she could get in another word, the door of her room opened and her oldest stepped inside holding a cup of steaming liquid in his hands.

“Mom, I got you some tea…” He stopped. Stared. “Jim?”

“George Samuel.”

“Pardon me, but you are blocking the door.”

And suddenly Jim smiled, his face lighting up like the sun.

“Spock! Just shove him out of the way.”

But to her relief, her oldest son merely moved into the room and allowed Spock, dressed as casually as Jim to enter.

“Spock, how wonderful to see you,” Winona greeted him. “Jim didn’t mention you came with him.”

Spock glanced briefly at Sam before moving past him to stand beside Jim and look down upon Winona in her bed.

“Indeed. Given that you are family, I felt I had no choice but to accompany him. You are doing better?”

Winona had to admit she felt a little warm inside at Spock mentioning they were family. Yes, they were, technically, since Spock was Jim’s husband, but there had been times that Winona thought Spock didn’t really care for her.

“I am, thanks to having my three boys here.” She beamed. “But if you’re both here, who’s minding the ship?’

“Commander Scott is perfectly capable,” Spock replied.

“Spock, have you met my older son, George Samuel?”

Spock stared across the bed to where her son stood, looking uncomfortable. Judging by the cold look in his dark eyes he had definitely gotten an earful from Jim.

“I have not.”

“Hello,” Sam said. “I, uh, I wasn’t able to make it to your ceremony. Sorry.”

“Understandable given your whereabouts at the time.”

“Yeah.” Sam flushed red. “Nice to meet you…finally.”

Spock inclined his head but did not return the pleasantry, which clearly mused Jim.

Winona cleared her throat. “You brought me tea?”

“Yes.” Sam brought it over to the bed. Handed it to her. “It really is good to see you, Jim.”

“It’s definitely a surprise,” Jim allowed.

Winona huffed but she let it slide.

“This is great. I love having you all here.”

Jim leaned down and kissed her brow. “I’m glad you’re going to be okay.”

“Why don’t you tell him?”

Spock shook his head. “It isn’t as easy as that. Not with the captain.”

“Tell me what?”

“Were you eavesdropping, Captain?” Nyota asked, angrily. She crossed her arms in front of her, all aggression.

Spock and Nyota were near the waterway on Yorktown having what they both thought was a private conversation.

Jim’s eyes narrowed. “Actually, no. I was looking for you, Lieutenant. Commodore Paris needs your communication expertise and I approved your assistance at the command center.”

Nyota instantly lowered her arms, glanced at Spock, and then said, “Yes, Captain. I’ll go right away.”

After she departed, Jim stepped up to where Spock stood by the waterway.

“Something you wanted to tell me?”

Spock was surprised that Jim wouldn’t look at him.

“Is something wrong, Captain?”

“Are you going to tell me you’re leaving after all?”

That did give Spock pause.

“You knew about that? Doctor McCoy?”

“Uh-huh.”

“I am not leaving.”

Jim nodded. “Then what? You and Uhura finally getting married or uh…bonded?”

“No.” Spock paused. “In fact, we are no longer romantically involved.”

Jim did look at him then and he was clearly quite surprised by this information, which made Spock hesitate even more.

“I thought after Altamid…” Jim shook his head.

“We briefly discussed the possibilities,” Spock admitted. “But the same issues we’d had that led to my choice to depart existed. Given that we remain close friends. It is…still a work in progress though.”

“I imagine.” Jim pursed his lips. “What is it then?”

“I do not wish to place undo burden—”

“Spock. What is it?”

He took a long breath and then let it out. “I have developed romantic feelings toward you.”

Jim turned away from the waterway to fully face Spock.

“Does that mean you have the hots for me?”

Spock blinked. “I…”

Jim grinned. “Don’t worry. I have the hots for you too.”

Just A Few Things

A few things like the title says

  1. I am hard at work updating the next chapter of The Wrong Captain. After much hemming and hawing in my own mind I am going to take it in a bit of a different direction than I originally implied. But it’s all good, I promise,
  2. I’m playing around in my head with my next work in progress, though it’s not close to being written and/or appearing. Someone had requested my fairytale Spirk version of Beauty and the Beast and that will be what is coming. Not too many spoilers but Jim is the beast, Spock is Beauty, and Amanda will be Beauty’s Parent character like in the Disney story. Didn’t read the fairytale or see the Linda Hamilton TV version.
  3. A Kitchen Update. I have the world’s, um, slowest drywall guy (read lazy). He’s returned to our place two days this week and has gotten more done as he seemed to work more full days then he had been, but today he didn’t come at all, instead going to someone else’s house who also wants their house fixed. I swear the company the insurance company made us choose only has one drywall guy. Anyway, hopefully next week the walls will be finished and painted. What’s after that? Um, either the cabinets or the floors. They aren’t at all communicative.
  4. Because I want to make everyone happy my three listed time periods for the guys will all appear. There are what… four weeks in March? The first week will be Academy, starting March 4, the next week will be regular service, starting March 11, and After Mission will be starting March 18th. The final week of March will be whatever!
  5. I will try to get two final love month flashes done for Monday and Wednesday of next week.

“What is that?”

Jim looked down at the cupcake with pink frosting he had been carrying to his quarters. “A little cake,”

Spock made an exasperated sound loud enough to have Jim glance at him in surprise.

“I know that it is cake. It looks homemade.”

“Yeoman Friar gave it to me. I guess she did make it.”

“Did she hand out others?”

Jim shrugged. “Not that I saw, but who knows.” He eyed Spock speculatively as they reached the door to his quarters. “You aren’t jealous, are you?”

“Am I not?”

He followed Jim inside.

“A crewmember has made you a special cupcake, which is an obvious attempt to woo you.”

Jim burst out laughing. “Come on, Spock. First you don’t even know if she baked it just for me. You are just speculating.”

“Isn’t there an old Earth saying about the way to a man is through his stomach?”

“Babe, even if she did bake it just for me  just to…” He chuckled. “Woo me. She doesn’t stand a chance.”

“Hmm.”

“Maybe she wants to woo you.”

Spock arched a brow. “She gave you the cupcake.”

“Maybe it is poisoned and I’ll keel over and then she can have you.” Jim grinned. “Man, you should see your face right now.”

“Someone trying to kill you is not amusing to me.”

“It’s not. Poisoned I mean.”

Spock pulled out his tricorder and scanned it.

“I can find no evidence of poisonous substances.”

“That’s a relief,” Jim teased. “Spock, you have nothing to worry about from anyone. Aren’t we getting married and bonded?”

“Yes.”

“A little cupcake is nothing compared to this.” He cupped Spock’s face and kissed him. Then he pulled back. “But as long as she went to the trouble of making it, I’m totally going to eat it.”

Spock sighed. “Time for me to meditate.”

“I think so.” Jim took a big bite. “Yum.”

We continue “Love Month”

Photo by James Lee on Pexels.com

Jim spotted Uhura going into her quarters holding a single red rose. She had a dreamy look on her face.

He knew Sulu had been experimenting with growing different varieties of Earth plants and flowers in his botany lab.

But Jim couldn’t help feeling…well not despondent. That was a little extreme. Disappointed? Definitely. Disheartened? Was that as bad as despondent? He didn’t think so.

Anyway, since rumor had been that Uhura had ended things with Spock for good this time, Jim felt the brief spark of hope he’d felt for his own chance with Spock fizzle out.

Strange, too, as he could have sworn during his recent flirting with Spock that Spock was reciprocating.

With a weary sigh, Jim decided he’d better mind his own business and enter his own quarters.

When he stepped inside his bed was covered in red rose petals. To the left of his bed, a table and chairs had been set up with two table settings, candlelight and glasses of champagne.

Jim blinked.

It was then Spock stepped into his view.

Jim grinned as Spock held out his hand for Jim to accept.

Of course Jim did.

Hi guys

I didn’t get a chance to get up a flash today as I went away for a quick weekend. I’m back now and hoping to have a flash up tomorrow. You might get them Tuesday and Thursday this week just because.

March is fast approaching so I’m going to ask anyone who wants to comment which of the following themes you’d like to see for that month:

Starfleet Academy

Older More Mature (as in after the missions are over)

During Regular Service on the Enterprise

More specific themes in any one of those choices will be Hurt/Comfort, Getting Together and Jealousy.

So I just want opinions on the time period for the guys you want to see for March

Appreciate it

I’m trying to get a one-shot started for posting on AO3 but without much success because of things. I’ll get to it.

It’s still Love month, so here’s a short flash

“How many lovers have you had?”

Jim couldn’t help but burst out laughing. It happened before he could stop it. Spock looked uncomfortable and contrite and vaguely offended. How he’d managed to look all three Jim didn’t know.

They’d been lying in bed peacefully absorbing the afterglow when Spock sprung the question.

“What?”

“I apologize if that is an inappropriate question.”

“It’s not. Well…it is. It kind of is. Just…why do you even want to know?”

“There is…ship wide speculation—”

“Oh there is huh? You’re listening to ship’s gossip or your former girlfriend?”

“Jim, I apologize.”

He nodded. “Well you should. I don’t even know why it matters. The past has nothing to do with us.”

Spock looked fully chastised now. “I realize.”

Jim sighed and then smiled. “But you still want to know, huh?”

“A matter of curiosity only.”

Jim snorted. “Yeah sure. Two things.”

“Yes?”

“Only one lover. You. The others were just sex. Two, being with you blows them all away.”

Spock stared, wide-eyed.

Jim laughed again. “Any more questions?”

“Just…may I kiss you?”

“Yeah, I think that would be alright.”

Happy Valentine’s Day

“This is nice.”

Jim looked around the outdoor restaurant Spock had brought him to for dinner. He’d thought it odd that they had outdoor restaurants on Vulcan but this was by far not the only one.

In deference to Jim, Spock had requested a table with shade, so it was fairly tolerable.

“Just nice?” Spock sounded dismayed by that assessment.

Jim picked up his giant glass of iced boba tea. “More than nice. When we say…nice…”

“It seems quite unenthusiastic.”

Jim laughed. “It can be. But it’s not what I meant in this case. I like it here. It’s serene. Quiet.”

“I had hoped you would find it romantic,” Spock admitted.

“I’m unused to a Vulcan considering romance. Isn’t that illogical?”

“Not entirely,” Spock said with a shrug. “My father spent some time wooing my Human mother.”

“Aren’t Vulcans bonded in childhood?”

“Preliminarily, yes. My father did have a prior wife before my mother. And they had a son together. The relationship ended went they both went against Vulcan modern teachings and the marriage ended between them. My father has been estranged from Sybok ever since.”

“And yet he romanced your mom?” He sipped his tea.

“Indeed. When in Rome I believe the Earth saying is. Anyway, he succeeded in obtaining her hand in marriage.”

“Aren’t you bonded? What about those others outside the café?”

“My bond was severed when my betrothed, T’Pring, requested it be so. She preferred another mate and I did not object given my own preferences.”

Jim nodded. “I see.”

“As for those other Vulcans they don’t seek any sort of permanent connection to you.”

He laughed again. “They just want to sleep with me?”

“Correct.”

“And you don’t?’

“It would be disingenuous of me to claim otherwise, but that is not all I am interested in. In fact, I would like you to meet my parents.”

Jim choked on the sip of tea he’d just taken. “Uh. Yeah, no. No offense or anything, Spock, but I don’t meet the parents on first dates. Or right after.”

Spock nodded. “I understand your hesitation. When would be an acceptable time?”

“I don’t know, but I’ll let you know.”

Spock leaned down and retrieved something out of a bag, which turned out to be a heart-shaped candy box. He handed it to Jim.

“A Valentine’s Day gift?”

“Rumor has it you have a great fondness for chocolate covered almonds.” He paused. “These are vegan, of course.”

Jim’s lips twitched. “Of course. Thank you, Spock. I don’t have anything to give to you.”

“I am pleased you accepted my invitation to dinner. That is all the gift I require.”

Jim shook his head and smiled. “Well, okay then. Let’s see where this goes, shall we?”

“I would like that.”

“Me too.”

Flash Fic, February 12, 2024

Now thanks to Gaila, Jim found himself looking at Spock differently as the Vulcan came through the tea shop towards where Jim sat waiting for him.

Spock had a thing for him? That seemed…impossible to believe.

“Good afternoon, Jim.”

“Hey. Are those three Vulcans still out there?”

“Three Vulcans?”

Jim nodded. “Gaila said they were out there wanting to give me gifts.”

Spock arched a brow as he took his seat. “There are no Vulcans out there currently.”

“Oh. Well then maybe she was wrong.”

“Perhaps.”

Jim shrugged. “Let’s get started then. You want some tea first?”

“Negative.” Spock hesitated. “Perhaps I should move closer.”

Jim eyed Spock. Okay that was strange. Was Gaila right? She’d gotten the three Vulcans waiting to give him Valentines wrong, but…

“Sure.”

Spock scooted his chair over until he was right beside Jim. He glanced at some of the things Jim had on the desk.

“You are intending to submit for the Vulcan Science Academy?’

“Hm? Oh. Yeah.”

“I assumed you were interested in Starfleet.”

Jim smiled. “Yes, I am. I don’t intend to actually attend the VSA.”

“I do not understand.”

“Just…I mean I’ve already been approved for Starfleet so I can’t even say I was hedging my bets. I want to prove to those old guys that a Human can be worthy of their prestigious school.” Jim laughed and felt himself blush. “You probably can’t understand.”

“You would be surprised.”

“Well, let’s just get to this.”

But shortly after they began, Jim felt Spock’s gaze on him instead of the material.

Jim looked up and sure enough the Vulcan was staring at him.

“Spock, can I ask you something?”

“Of course.”

“Why are you coming to me for tutoring?”

“You are an expert in miliary tactics.”

“Okayyyy.” Jim leaned back. “But it’s occurred to me that you know all the answers before I cover the material. Spock, are you playing me?”

“Playing you?”

“Yeah. I mean, I don’t know, making fun of me or something. I can’t figure out any other reason.”

“You cannot?”

“Well. Gaila suggested you were interested in me romantically but—”

“She is right,” Spock said quietly.

Jim’s eyes widened and he noticed his glasses were fogging up. “What?”

“It is true. I apologize for the subterfuge but I attempted to obtain your attention when you first arrived and you did not appear to notice me.”

“Not notice you?” Jim laughed. “Are you crazy?”

Spock frowned. “I have no diagnosed mental illness.”

Jim sighed and grinned. “I’ve noticed you. Why not get straight to the pint and ask me to go out?”

“You do not seem interested in anyone. Those Vulcans outside—”

“Wait. They were out there? I thought Vulcans didn’t lie.”

“I sent them away so technically it was not a lie.”

“Technically?”

“Vulcans embrace technicalities.”

Jim leaned in and kissed Spock on the lips. “Maybe embrace me instead.”

Spock blinked. “When do you get off work?”

“Now?”

A few minutes later, Jim joined Spock on the sidewalk outside the tea shop. Three Vulcan males and two females stood nearby.

“James!”

And several held out heart-shaped cards and even boxes of chocolates.

“Uh.” Jim looked to Spock. “Am I really irresistible to Vulcans?”

“Apparently.”

Jim laughed, linked arms with Spock, and started walking away.

“Wait! Choose us, he’s only half Vulcan.”
