“I now declare my independence,” Jim said as he walked beside Bones.
Bones smirked. “From Gary?”
“Gary and from all others. No more relationships, Bones. I am footloose and fancy free.” Jim turned around and started walking backwards, doing a little foot work as he did so, laughing at the look Bones was giving him.
He turned around then and walked straight into…
“Oomph.” Jim staggered back and a hand shot out to steady him. He felt himself blushing hot. And staring into the most beautiful pair of dark eyes he’d ever seen. “Uh. Hi. And, um, sorry.”
The guy, a Vulcan, arched a brow. “That was quite a dance.”
“Uh.” Jim laughed uncomfortably. “Yeah. I was…sort of celebrating. Jim Kirk.”
“Spock. What were you celebrating?”
“A, uh.” He moistened his lips. “A break up.”
“How fortunate.”
“It is?”
“For me,” Spock said, matter-of-fact. “Dinner?”
Jim heard Bones coughing nearby.
He ignored him.
Smiled.
“Yeah. Dinner sounds great.”
Happy Independence Day!

And the fireworks began early that year for these two.
Thank goodness Jim celebrated his freedom there, because he shall never be free again. Nor ever again want to be. Except, well, there IS a different and wonderful kind of freedom in being loved and loving for real. Which, this time next year, these two will be joined at the.h….eart.
Perfect ID4 fic! Thank you!

Speaking of which, do you have ID4 plans for tomorrow? I’m going to the ranch for the weekend and GS and I are learning to play ST whatever on FB. He texted me last night asking.

Oh that sounds lovely! I hope you and GS have a great time 🙂
Going to my sister’s. We sit on the patio outside and talk and plan on having margaritas. My mom stays inside away from us. It’s a very small gathering. We are having the traditional hot dogs and hamburgers. No fireworks of course this year. In the past we’d watch our city’s show but that’s all been canceled of course. My poor mom is losing her mind more and more. But she will be 94 this month so…

Wow. Happy birthday to her. Glad you guys are keeping safe. Sorry the city isn’t at least shooting off fireworks so everyone can watch from afar. There’s still a large fireworks show here but nothing else, so if you live close enough, those people can watch. There were already fireworks shows in the smaller country towns and over my lake last weekend so people could park and watch. But when did so many smaller towns move to have fireworks shows just….whenever, with no regard for when ID actually is? Seems there’s no excuse when it’s actually on a Saturday.
I remember one ID4 we went waterskiing, and when darkness hit, we played in the water, and we could see NINE different towns’ fireworks shows from there over the horizon every direction. It was awesome – something to never forget.
They’re televising a huge fireworks show in NYC they’re televising live, so maybe you can catch a great one that way?

Yeah we might catch something on TV. I bet that was amazing on the water like that! WOW
We went to San Francisco many many years ago on the 4th and it was so foggy we couldn’t see a thing! ha ha Such a disappointment.
Here in my city they wanted to do a smaller show with people staying in their cars but the city didn’t want to pay for it and have to worry about enforcing all these idiots to stay where they are supposed to. I wouldn’t either if I was the city. In 2013 we missed the fireworks here too. We were all waiting for them on the street (cause that’s where we went, to a street near the park with chairs) and the time came for the works and they went off once and then made this horrible explosion noise and that was it. NOTHING. We were all not sure what the hell was going on. Then sirens started and the news copters came and everyone started coming from the park telling all us street people that the fireworks exploded and injured people and that the show was, of course, canceled. So we walked home. It was pretty scary and all over the news. So we’ve missed it before. And really with the fires we have it’s good not to have them. Of course that never stops the illegal ones!

OMG that’s horrendous and so scary. I often forget that fireworks aren’t just cute toy little things that go boom/make pretty. They’re explosives just like war, projectiles and all.
I’m glad you weren’t hurt!
Still they only happen once a year officially and there are only so many ID4’s in our lives. And who knows what the future holds regarding the holiday and fireworks and everything, the way it’s all going now.
That would be awful to be in SF and too foggy to see them. On the other hand, home of Starfleet Academy, so there’s always that – in your imagination. They need to get started building it right now so it’s read and start teaching mostly sciences.
