In case you wonder, we have filed a claim with the insurance. We have to send in forms, etc. But we might get a little bit of money from them. We shall see. I’ll keep you posted if anyone is interested.
In the meantime, we are moving forward with getting estimates for the garage door to be replaced with a new one. Have an estimate coming tomorrow and Wednesday after work. We’d like to get this done sooner rather than later, so that’s the plan.
Thanks everyone!

Good! That’s all good news. Meanwhile, crossing my fingers and toes that nobody else sees your damage as an opportunity to do more breaking in and stealing!

I hoping you get some money toward it. That’s why you have home owners insurance in the first place. For things like this.
Hoping for the best possible outcome my friend!

Yeah at least some money toward the stolen contents I guess.

Well, remember the reason we have to take out homeowners insurance is to protect the mortgage company on the building itself. Homeowners insurance is probably more about protecting the structure, thus the garage door itself. And then if you have insurance on your own contents, that will go toward whatever is stolen, minus the deductible of course. Deductibles are of the devil. This I DO believe!

Right but at the most they would cover the opener itself not the door. As Judge Milian on the People’s Court says it is to make you whole not in better shape than you were. And paying for a new door would be in better shape. So either way if they at least pay for the opener, it’s something. The structure of the garage was not damaged.

Got ya. I thought the door would be considered part of the structure, and it was damaged further – or was it not? Just the opener itself broken?

Well they pried the door open so it sticks out more than it did before but you can still close the door, just not lock it

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Jerks. Whoever broke in can’t even do a garage invasion correctly so you get the cost of the door. That’s the least they could have done!

ha yes, but at least the door can close and all our stuff isn’t exposed to everyone while we wait to get it replaced. Not only do we have to deal with insurance, but we have to get the forms and approval from the HOA (I hate HOAs, do not recommend them), so once we get the estimates and choose the one we want, that’s the next step. I want it done sooner rather than later but I am guessing it’s more likely within the next two weeks. We shall see

Well I’m a lawyer so if you need any help with the insurance company I’m a dab hand at arguing their terms and conditions 😉
